32GB Unlocked iPhone SE for $399 at Optus (in-Store)

880

Bought the 32 GB iPhone SE at the Bourke St Mall Optus Store in Melbourne. Sales staff said phone should be unlocked, and after upgrading to iOS 11, the phone was indeed unlocked (checked with a different SIM). According to this optus page, all new prepaid iPhones from Optus are unlocked.

Likely to be limited stock but at least one other Optus store had iPhone SE's for sale. About the going price on staticice but the all the major stores I checked did not have any SE's in stock.

First deal post for me - hope this helps someone else.

Has the IOS 11 slowed down the phone at all?

    • +3

Works fine so far. Fingers crossed

      • Did they have the Silver colour on sale too? :)

        • They only had the black one in stock. Since I get a case anyway, I wasn't too fussed about the colour. Good luck :)

    • +7

IOS11 has been fantastic on my iPhone SE.

I really do recommend this phone. I bought it since I use the camera quite a lot and its been a good experience.

Only pain is the challenge of finding cases, need to try your luck at like Kmart or Reject Shop or buy on eBay.

      • +2

my wife using SE ios 11. works perfectly.

      • +5

I thought an iPhone 5 or 5s case will fit an SE?

        • They will, but given how old these phones are many bricks and mortar stores won't stock them.

      • +2

Have trouble finding cases? There's plenty of cases if you shop online. I've had this particular Spigen case on my SE & it's fantastic. https://www.spigen.com/collections/iphone-se-5s-5/products/i… My phone has survived so many drops.

        • That's the case I used for my 5s. Now transferred to the SE

    • No issue on my SE either as the DR has iPhone 6S internals.

    • +1

I’ve had the phone for about a year.
Still runs pretty quick but there are more noticeable lags now. Such as when trying to send a pic from the photos app to an
      iMessage.
Battery life has dropped a fair bit too.

    • Curious to hear others feedback on this. Have stayed on 10.3.3 so far to avoid 11 crippling the phone.

      • May as well wait for the next update. Loopy Lou said it wasn't far away.

I tried it at an Apple store. iOS 11 does slow down the phone a bit in terms of opening system apps (e.g. Settings, Phone). To test it, you need to make sure the apps have not yet been loaded (double tap and swipe out / remove them if they are there). Then, open Settings app. You will feel a 1 second pause before Settings is completely ready. iPhone 6S/6S+ have the same issue too.

It may not be an issue for most people, but I have observed this for majority of Apple iPhones/iPads after the second major iOS update. It is quite obvious if you compared iPhone 8 and iPhone SE side by side on iOS 11 (which was what I did at the Apple store). Most of the articles will indicate there is no "slow down" because they tested it with benchmark software. After an app is completely loaded, the performance is fine. However, initial loading of the apps and general OS does get impacted. There is no reason for this as Apple A9 CPU is quite decent.

When I compared it with a Google Android device with inferior CPU and has received 2 Android OS updates vs iPhone SE on iOS 11, opening Settings (Settings not in memory before the test), the Android device wins easily. Compared to my iPhone SE (on iOS 10), it is neck and neck, I think iPhone SE might be a tiny bit faster than the Android device on iOS 10 when opening Settings.

Again, might not be an issue for most people. However, I do have high expectation from Apple devices so I won't be upgrading my SE to iOS 11 for now. It is a big issue for me for one of my Apple devices which I received a replacement unit from Apple. While the warranty service was good from Apple, the replacement came with latest iOS, and it was very laggy. Compared to the OS it was running (the original one), the device was very smooth. It did result in me buying another Apple device (a newer model) because I just cannot stand the lag.

      • It did result in me buying another Apple device (a newer model) because I just cannot stand the lag <—— trap set by Apple
Edit: my experience is if update more than 2 iOS from the date the iDevice is released you are risking it from mid to severe lag.

  • How much is it in the Apple store ?

  • +1
  • My iphone SE has been freezing and the speaker-hands free doesnt work sometimes

    • +2

Take it to an apple store for replacement - but backup first!

    • +1

Had a similar issue with my wife's phone. They test the speakers and it ended up failing the test on all but 1 of the speakers. Phone replaced on the spot but saves time to backup before you go if you suspect they'll be replacing your phone, as I did.

Also still $399 @ Harvey Norman.
Telstra Prepaid, but unlocking seems to be free according to comments.

    • +3

None of the Harvey Norman stores in Melbourne seemed to have stock :(. And at $14.95, the shipping was slightly outrageous.

      • Target has, same price.

      • You could try price matching at Officeworks.

        • +3

officework $379 and free unlock, just got mine friday in store

      • +1

Harvey Norman also have the Optus iPhone SE for the same price.

        • Since the Optus iPhone will be unlocked, getting that from HN (rather than the Telstra version) is probably a good option. Same holds for any store (JB Hifi, Target) that has the Optus phone in stock.

        • +1

@smokeymr: as many have said Telstra unlock is just a phone call or mouse click away, certainly worth the price difference. And Australia post is selling it at the same price as well. Just spot it at Watergardens.

        • +3

@smokeymr: simplely go to unlock.telstra.com, enter your IMEI, and then unlocked, no phone call Customer Care at all

        • @John Kelvin: Didn't know that. Thanks!

  • Bought one from HN last week.

For the price of an iPhone X you can get 4 of these. SE has everything you need bar larger screen.

    • +1

You can say the same to a Toyota vs Lexus.

      • +1

        Or a merc

      • Toyota vs Lexus.

Perhaps twice the price. Not four times the price.

        • You could compare a corolla to a Lexus LC500 at about 200k

    • +5

SE has everything you need bar larger screen.

Also faster CPU, GPU, more RAM, more storage, more features overall. Might as well say get a 3210, it has everything you need bar everything.

    • +1

What are you meant to do with 4 of them? Duct tape them together and get a 4X bigger screen?

  • +1

price is not very special. not long time ago, hn, ow, target, were all at this price for telstra stock (can be unlocked for free.) but now seems like trlstra verison are out of stock everywhere. if you want se, this is still a decent deal.

    • So not a bargain? Just an in stock alert?

    • most of place out of stock. Officeworks sells them @ $379

  • +2

IMO, 32GB is far too small for most people these days. Fills up extremely fast.

    • +4

      I had a iphone 7 plus 128 plus for a year,since I found I only use 20GB, I turned back to iPhone SE 32G.

    • I'm coping with a 16gb 6S.

Makes you delete all the apps you never use anyway

      • I have found 16GB frustrating. Constantly running out of room. Some apps I use once every month but I still want them around. Stuff for travel is also a good example, maybe used less than once a month but I don’t want to go and find all the apps that I want before every trip; I would rather use the aps that I know and like and don’t have to keep a list of them elsewhere.

16GB is useable as a straight forward phone but as soon as there are convenience desires then 16GB is annoying.

        • Actually, when you have to live with it, 16GB is usable with iOS 11 IF you don't regularly use massive apps (e.g. 3D games).

          • You need a generous data plan so you can sync photos to cloud and delete, and stream music etc.
          • The feature in iOS 11 that 'offloads' less used apps is brilliant. No more uninstalling apps that you know you will need some day, and losing all local data.
        • +1

          @scynaz:
I have iOS 11 and a 16gb phone. It is annoying :) 32gb is a lot more useable.

        • @g1:

It is annoying, just not as bad as some assume :-) I can't think of a single thing I am not able to do because of 16gb. Several things are more annoying yes.

    • +3

      I like smaller storage phones.

Means I don’t end up having 2 years worth of photos stored up on my phone when I upgrade.
Forces me to collate and mange my photos a bit better

  • My SE has been going slow and sometimes I can’t hear on calls ever since the update, not trying to discourage anyone, I’m sure it an isolated incident?

    • Sometimes I can’t even answer a call on my se. The touch screen doesn’t respond to touches.

      • -1

Sorry I don't understand why there are so many of these comments.
The iPhone SE came out less than two years ago. If you bought your phone in Australia, it is under warranty.
Back up with iTunes and take it to an Apple store and get it fixed / replaced.
It's a major reason I get all family to buy Apple stuff.
At least for the first two years you don't have to do any tech support for people you can't refuse.
If you bought from overseas, don't! Phones have non trivial failure rates in the 1-2 year period. Even Apple.

If you are considering buying the iPhone SE, just make sure you have local warranty, don't go by random comments.
Among 20+ smartphones my family or I have had over the last 10 years, over 50% had hardware problems fixed/replaced under warranty.
Across all major brands - LG, Apple, Samsung.

    • +1

Take it to the Apple Store. Even if you aren't the original owner, even if it is outside of their warranty that doesn't sound like the sort of expected wear and tear general use would cause and more like a hardware fault perhaps. You have nothing to lose other than maybe 30-60 minutes of your time in setting up the appointment, getting there, waiting etc

Just spoke to my local Optus store. It’s the locked model for $399 apparently. She scanned the unlocked model and it was $650 or something sill
EDIT: Just re read the optus unlocking terms. Not sure what the store rep was on about

    • Did you do this face to face… or over the phone?

      • Over the phone then went down to the shop and got the same treatment. Based off the info in the OP just decided to get one and see how it goes

        • +1

All set up with Telstra. Definately unlocked

  • This a decent upgrade from an iPhone5?

    • +2

Yes. I upgraded from Apple 5 to SE and it's night and day difference in terms of speed.

    • Yes. The doubled RAM alone is worth it. iOS 11 is painful with 1GB RAM.

  • Bought this very phone from Optus approximately 2 months ago. Assistant said it was locked but sure enough worked with Telstra, UK EE and a Digi SIM in Malaysia.

  • thanks op, just bought mum 1 from hv, fingers crossed i can unlock for free.

  • when I click on the 'deal' why it shows $469?
Is there any version with 128G?
    Thanks

    • Telstra store selling SE 128gb for $624 if that helps.

      • Could you send me the link? I cannot find it from telstra site, only $129 plan.
        Thanks

        • I saw it in store.

  • Anyone think/know if the 6S will replace it as a prepaid option?

Everywhere lists the 5SE's & 6's as clearance.

    • 6s or 6 ?

if you mean iPhone 6, not really worth to buy.

      • 6s!

Seems ridiculous they're currently priced at $700+ for a 2 or 3 year old phone.

        • +1

That pricing strategy is to make those who wants an iphone to think "oh iphone 7 or 8 is only a few hundred dollars more, let's get that instead of 6S".

  • Bought one for $399 today from Optus in Murray St mall, Perth.

Shop has (had?) one more left.

Saleswoman said it came with a $50 credit.

  • Thanks OP. I got the last one in Garden City Perth. Salesman said it should be unlocked.

  • +1

BigW has Optus iPhone SE for $399 from today. Got it for my son, it’s unlocked out of the box. Used the 5% off egiftcards.

  • Does the $50 come in the included sim, or it came as a separate recharge?

  • Looks like these are getting hard to find. Went to Optus on Collins st and was told it's $672. Officeworks all the stock had been pulled from their store and it's only available online for $600. Harvey Norman is sold out. Vodafone was $550 outright.

  • Went to BigW yesterday at Southland. They have it in stock for $399.00, but the guy says that it's tied to Optus. Went to Optus to check on unlocking and they say it will cost $80.00 to have it unlocked. Haven't purchased it as yet.
I read from some posts above that it is unlocked when purchased from BigW. I've seen the packaging and it does have an Optus kit with the box. Very confusing!

  • Got one from MQ centre, now bigw remove the iphone se in their website, I believed it is nearly sold out.

    • Which store did you buy it from? I might go find one tomorrow.

      • Macquarie Centre,NSW. Call them confirm before you go. They would reserve the phone for you.Do not forget use the 5% off wish gift card.

  • +1

Bought it from BigW in Southland. The sales guys at the store tell you that it is locked to Optus (they are instructed to do so). But in fact, Optus is no longer selling locked iPhones since many years now.
    https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/phone_unlocking

Optus staff also tell you that they will charge $80.00 for unlocking the phone. A total rip-off if you don't do your proper research.

The iPhone SE came with iOS 11 (so it's one of the newly manufactured device for this model) and I can use it on the Telstra network without any problem. It comes with an Optus pre-paid plan for a month after activation. Really cool!

    • cool thanks for the confirmation that its works with any provider, i was scared to buy the optus iphone see, thinking i would have to pay for it to be unlocked.

    • Yeah I bought one at HN (in-store) too! Effectively got the phone for $299 after the Amex $100 off :)
