Lenovo P8 Tablet (White Only) USD $121.11 / AUD $158 Delivered from GearBest. SD625, 8" 1920x1200, 3GB/16GB/MicroSD

780
11.11AUP8

Lenovo P8 Tablet, same as Tab3 8 Plus in some market I think, is currently on sale at GearBest for USD $129.99 delivered (around AUD $169). Only the white version has the discount. I am still holding onto my old Nexus 7 2013 and it looks like a good upgrade.

  • Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 / Adreno 506
  • 3GB RAM / 16GB ROM / MicroSD up to 64GB
  • 8inch IPS 1920x1200 display
  • Android 6.0

There appears to be a way to root the device & install TWRP and but can't find any alternate ROM, which is a bummer as it has SD625.

Update: coupon code found by dragonindespair brings the price down to USD $124.11.

Update 2: Price dropped further to USD $121.11. Coupon code above no longer works.

Update 3 coupon usable again

This is part of Singles' Day Sales for 2017.

Thanks very much for the code.

What really shits me about Gearbest one off coupon codes is as soon as you validate the code in checkout even though you don't proceed with the sale, you can't use the code when you are ready to purchase, i.e. you cancel the checkout to add an extra item or change the currency you pay it. Bang, code has been 'used'.

I had to create a new account with a different email address to be able use the code.

    • I tried the coupon code, but it actually jumped from 169.59 to 240.10! lol…
First time I ever seen a coupon code that will make the price go higher, weird :D

edit - The Code you entered has expired.

      • Try a different browser

        • Just tried it with Firefox (Chrome prev.), still says expired, then used Edge, same result too.

        • @luminair:

Yep, me too on Chrome. Must be expired now maybe.

Hi scotty, did you ask the Rep for a coupon code to make it even cheaper for us professionals?

    • +2

they had this special limited unit sale for AUD 97 days ago. of course very limited unit, apparently all snapped up by russian customers but i would like to get one at that price :D

      • +1

Oh, those Russians, it was a shame how he carried on!

    • +1

Nope. I just saw this offer in my email. If there's a code to get it cheaper I can update it.

Bought one from an earlier deal for ~$180.. the side mounted Stereo Speakers and the high res screen are great.
Performance is good as you'd expect of a 3Gb RAM SD625 system.
The ROM is pretty clean and stock Android.. Of the minimal bloatware installed, only the Lenovo P8 Specifications "app" is uninstallable.
    Haven't used GPS, or camera.

I also bought the Flip case off Gearbest, it's very decent quality.

    • I also got the tablet during a sale. Pretty impressed with it given the price. Paid roughly $180 as well for the tablet, case and glass screen protector.

    • I already have one…. Solid device for the money.

  • 16GB ROM? that's ridiculous in 2017

    • +2

Yep, kinda… Adoptable Storage solves that largely though

  • is this upgradable to the current Android OS?

    • No, Android 6 only..
I think the Tab 4 Plus is supposed to get Oreo at some stage, but ships with Nougat.

      • tab 4 plus only seems to have a 720p display though…

        • Tab 4 maybe?

          The Plus range are different

        • @scubacoles:

yeah sorry i had a second look. You're right.

So yeah, it's either tab 3 plus or tab 4 plus for my child.

I'm leaning more towards the tab 3 plus as I can't find a good deal for a tab 4 plus anywhere and don't think he'll notice the extra performance gains.

          @witsa:

Yeah for the price, I don't think anything else comes close..

The dimensions are very close, likely holes for camera and charge are in the wrong spots, but nothing a Craft Knife can't resolve.

This will be my tablet until their Nexus 2012 finally gives up the ghost.. It's on its last legs.. frame is all cracked, screen has already been replaced (and I'm never doing another one again!).

        • @scubacoles:

Ok well looks it's not a bad deal and you seem pretty happy with it.

So I'll just go and buy it.

          Thanks!

        • @scubacoles:

Have you received the case and fit it in? Does the holes match or easy to cut out a new one like you said? About to buy the same case like you suggested.

          Cheers

        • +1

          @catear:
Yeah, the Kids foam case fits beautifully.
I haven't tried cutting out a USB charge port hole yet, but I don't anticipate too many issues with a sharp knife.
I'm not going to bother cutting anything else, don't need the rear camera and Audio is still decent.

    • I've got a yoga 2 tablet still running ICS iirc. Don't hold your breath.

  • does this tablet come with google play and the suite of google products (gmail, maps etc)?

    • Yep

  • I am still holding onto my old Nexus 7 2013 and it looks like a good upgrade.

I was thinking the same until i saw 16GB.

  • I don't really follow Tablets, but am I right in saying that compared to smart phones the specs are pretty light and the costs are still pretty high?

This one does seem pretty good though

    • +2

      In tablet world, you're wrong…
There is nothing that comes close to this in price:performance
Next closest would be the Huawei Mediapad M3 at around twice the price on sale.

Even in phone world a SD625 with 3Gb RAM is going to set you back $140ish.
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/340208

      • Thanks for that.

Well I might be partially right. It was my understanding that a quality brand name manufacturer were still around the $3-400 price range.

Can I ask if there are many well priced Windows 10 tablets with good specs, or mostly Android?

        • Heaps of dual boot devices… but the cheap ones only come with 2Gb RAM which leads to sluggish response.
In my opinion Windows needs a minimum 4Gb RAM.

        • @scubacoles:

          Cool man, I appreciate that.

A few years back I had a laptop with 4gb RAM and it was perfectly fine (Win XP). It was mid range at the time. I don't need a tablet so i'm not actively seeking but it would be tempting to buy a workable for Windows tablet for $200 or less that will be fully functional in terms of MS Office and Chrome browser usage.

I did have an Acer tablet but I managed to bugger up the OS and couldn't be bothered with it afterwards.

      • A number of reviews seem to mark the Lenovo down on performance. It's all relative, but how has your experience been?

        • +1

I'm not really doing anything that would test performance greatly.
Facebook, Youtube and a bit of Browsing.

      • This? $158 during 11.11 sale

        dunno how this compares MTK MT8783V-CT 4G 64-bit 1.5GHz to the SD625

  • My Nexus 7 2012 died of an un-glorified death, never to be resurrected during a ROM refresh.

The file transfer stopped during bootloader load from PC, after I unplugged it, it's not responding ever since, not matter what key combination I tried.
No screen light up even plug in charger!

Does any ozbargainer have similar experience?

    • +5

No, but why were you Fastbooting a ROM on Nexus?

Just fastboot a recovery and then flash from there!

    • +4

My Nexus 7 2013 is still running Stock but 2012 is flushed with TWRP & Nougat. Sometimes it just won't boot and you need to hold Power + Vol Up + Vol Down (yes 3 buttons at the same time) and then plug in the power. Sacrifice a rubber chicken and when the stars align it might get into the bootloader mode. Maybe the chicken & star-alignment are not necessary…

      • I found you sometimes need whole comso align to your favor to get Nexus 7 working :-)

In that regard, iPad is more user friendly. Probably worth the extra money for some.

        • only if you don't have to do photo and movie edit for your assignment…..

      • +1

Fun fact for the Nexus 2013. If the touchscreen ever becomes unresponsive, a light/medium tap on the back fixes it! Seems to be a problem amongst them so keep it up your sleeve!

    • The USB port on mine died suddenly, thought it was completely dead because it wouldn't charge but it worked with a wireless charger. Unfortunately the USB board isn't cheap, around $60. If you're lucky it might be just the $2 port but that requires some soldering skills to replace. Or, of course, it could be something else, but it should still charge for you…

      • I replaced my USB board.. it certainly wasn't $60.. but it also was unlikely to be a genuine part.. still works though.

        • Just realized OP had a 2012 - those are cheap, it's the 2013's board that wasn't. If you know of a cheaper board for the 2013 I'm all ears as I'm still searching for one. Only one I found cheaper turned out to be a repair job on eBay that still doesn't work for data transfer.

      • USB port is dead because it's loose, a problem with the Nexus 7 2013. Just open it up and squeeze the port with a plier. Or go wireless. IE wireless charging and wireless networks with your router.

I managed to partially squeeze it a little without opening the case but had problems charging again within 2 weeks. Been using a wireless charger for 1.5 years. Edit I recently ordered a T8 plus as a gift slower but has dual 4g.

This is considerable cheaper than the mi max 2, with same processor but with 4G.

  • I've been looking at getting one of these since my Nexus 7 bit the dust recently. Thanks heaps.

  • +1

just bought 2 of these.. will do the kids for xmas.. missus was wanting to get them a portable dvd player each o.O so i convinced her this was much better purchase

    • +1

      lucky them
      :)

how is the headphone experience with this one? i just need it to not have annoying static sound like most dual boot tablet. nothing too fancy

  • Just got one! Thank you OP for posting this, I think it's time for my Nexus 10 to retire Even though it's still working but it feels slow in 2017 standard.

  • Anyone with one of these care to give a mini review? How responsive is the screen, how zippy is it for general use?
    Thanks

    • +2

I got this tablet about a month ago. wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised.
General browsing with chrome is fine, even with multiple tabs open. Screen I think is fantastic for the price!
Included video player plays MKV H.264 files fine and the stereo speakers pack a really good punch. Very loud.
Video looks great and watching a 1080 of Blue Planet 2 looked nice and sharp and crisp.Headphone jack gives no static that I could hear over plane noise when i used them for the first time the other day. All in all very impressed with the performance of this tablet for the $170 I paid for it, much better than the nexus 7 that the wife has.

      • How about h.265 files?

        • +3

SD 625 shouldn't have any trouble playing h.265

        • I haven't tried any yet.

      • Great! Thanks.
Care to share how the battery life is?

        • +1

Battery life is ok, not going to win any world records. But in saying that, I haven't really taken a lot of notice
as I usually charge when i'm finished using it

  • +1

I've been looking at the Mi Pad 3 - thoughts vs this?

    • I've been considering the Mi Pad 3 too. Was hoping for a good deal on 11/11 sale, but sadly nothing.
Considering price of Mi Pad 3 Vs this, I'm quite tempted to grab one of these. I'd love to see benchmark scores compared between the two.

      • Likewise, but haven't been able to find a decent comparison.

    • +1

Another consideration is the aspect ratio. Mi Pad is a 7.9" device with 4:3 aspect ratio which to be hones I would prefer to have rather than 16:10.

      • But for primarily watching movies, 16 10 is the best, right? And this p8 is 16 10?cant find info on the description page

      • actually i was wrong 16:9 best for movies, but this tablet yes has 16:10

        • Yes 4:3 is worse for movies I think … but I use tablet mainly for reading … that's why I prefer 4:3 aspect ratio if I got to choose. But purchasing decision is usually driven by the price/value ratio, not aspect :-D

  • I have a Lenovo Tab3 A7 but couldn't tell from some quick Googling if this was just a larger version of that tablet, or a different tablet entirely.

Planning to aim for an Android 7 tablet or even a Windows 10 tablet if a good enough coupon comes my way.

    • +3

Tab3 A7 is the Mediatek 1Gb RAM budget version.. this is the from the Plus range with better screen, stereo speakers, better SoC and More RAM.
The Plus version is superior in every way.

  • Anyone care to comment on how this would compare to the "Nexus 7 2013" model. I admit, I am being a tad lazy to do the numbers and asking in case anyone happens to have both?

  • Cheers OP got one! :)

  • Thanks, got one.

Now any deals for 128gb or 256gb SD Cards?

  • Been looking at an iPad Mini Cellular for my Mavic Pro, wondering how well this Lenovo tab would work in Follow Me mode?

  • +2

got one for my daughter .. now need a recommendation for a decent case pls ?

    • yeah ive been looking trying to find some decent cases for it for my kids as well… ill post back later if I find something that looks decent

    • Haven't got it yet, but as above, I have ordered a soft foam kids case designed for a Samsung Tab S 8.4. Dimensions are the same, so should be a snug fit, but I'm guessing I'll need to cut out a hole for the charging port.
Otherwise if your daughter is older and doesn't require the kids case, the Case that Gearbest sell is very good.

      • I was looking at these

        https://www.gearbest.com/tablet-accessories/pp_662676.html?w…

        https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/for-Lenovo-Tab3-8-P…

        They look exactly the same.

Also, if someone has done their research, can they recommend a glass screen protector that fits perfectly.

        • Yeah, that'd be the case I have from Gearbest…
          It's very good.

What do you need a screen protector for?
Screen protectors for phones vaguely make sense, but for tablets I really don't get the point, especially if you are buying a case that will protect the screen in transit!

        • @scubacoles:

It's for my toddlers, they are pretty good at breaking things.

FYI, I don't use a screen protector for my phone.

        • @JB1:

We have a similar soft foam case to the ebay link I posted way up the top.. it's been great for our other tablet.

  • actually i prefer the shop name to be gearbeast.
got more kick compare with gearbest

  • This one seems worth waiting for

Downside is the price and Gold colour scheme.

      • +2

im no expert but i read LOTS of reviews of Chinese tablet (when i said Chinese i dont mean huawei xiaomi or lenovo or asus, but very small brands icnluding telcast and yours post).

while they can paint a rainbow in the descriptions, usually they are duds.
they can put 50MPX camera by sony but quality will be on par with 12MPX from samsung (this is just example).

        other common issues:
        overheat
        unreadable screen under the sun
        wifi problems
        short battery life

those kind of issues you can only find from reviews.
i will stay away. no point to waste money even cheap money its still money

        • Thanks

        • @blehgg: yeah those chinese are smart in making things looks pretty and beautiful, from outside. you know that beauty face mode/scene on the phone? make your skins smooth as baby butt…yeah… ok i think you get the point haha

    • I think that is possibly the Tab 4 Plus 8"?
The specs between Tab 4 Plus and Tab 3 Plus are very similar. notable exceptions being the Android OS version and price. I believe Lenovo have promised an Oreo update to the Tab 4 Plus.

      • Looks like you're right. A beast that'll likely never fully make it to our shores.

  • Just wondering if buyers have been paying extra and adding the shipping protection??

    Worth the extra $$$?

    • +1

For anything over A$10 I add tracking number and insurance - prefer this to the nightmare of a more pricey package that never turns up (happened to me once already)….

Although the tracking does not work properly with all delivery companies and some couriers will leave the package at your house and do not require a signature (i.e. package is untracked as far as I can tell).

But at least with insurance you know that if it looks like your item is a no-show (i.e. you've waited at least 6 weeks since it was mailed out) you can ask them to re-send.

  • Price is now $158.00 without the coupon code (code posted seems to have expired)

    • good find AUD158 not USD… owwwwwwww must resist…. i said will buy when under AUD150 and now they do this to me…..

      • +1

        Pull the trigger @dragonindespair :-p

  • Price changed to $168.44 AUD now
