    I don't need this I don't need this I don't need this I don't need this I don't need this I don't need this I don't need this I don't need this I don't need this I don't need this, then again (profanity) it.

Does anyone know if these suckers work with the old JAR file games of the day? I used to have my Nokia loooooaded with them back in high school. Had all the Guitar Heros and Spider-Man games and literally just so many games, it was awesome. If I can dig up a shitload of things like that, I'll grab one of these in a heartbeat.

    • Nah this phone predates them

      • +2

Shit. I was kinda hoping, given the newer style OS that they'd have just reskinned the last version they had on these style phones, not made a dumbed down thing just for it.

Honestly actually pretty tempted still though, if mostly because the local stock and warranty. I'd probably buy it in a heartbeat if I didn't have a 20 month old, having a kid is the only thing that got me to actually use the camera on my phone, and going to a shitty one just wouldn't make sense if I wanna actually keep the photos.

Suppose I could just make the missus take all the photos on her phone from hereon.

        • Drugs dealers might like it.

        • @Bangersnmash: That jokes outdated nowadays anyway. This is 50 at it's cheapest, you can buy a usable touch screen Android for 20 odd new no problem nowadays, like, why would a drug dealer wanna pay more for this shit? Especially when a lot of those cheapies are dual SIM too and can let you run two numbers at the same time.

          4/20 bad dealer logic

        • @TheDukeOfNukem: lol kiddin around

        • @Bangersnmash: I know, but like, I was in Cole's yesterday and there's a Boost Lumia or something sounding like that, 19 bucks outright.

Any dealer that still uses button phones is either proper OG or a money waster.

        • +1

          @TheDukeOfNukem:

$19 lumia? wow what model that's cheap.

        • +1

@Bangersnmash: Googled, found out I meant Luna, wasn't really sure of the name, didn't look. Already been posted on here too https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/341507

    Great review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsBeBnaGKnY

Conclusion: It's over priced for what you get, they murdered 'Snake', it's not made by Nokia, it's not a smart phone (the review says 2.5g? Is that different to the Aus version?), Chinese-android phones are both cheaper and more useful

    • +3

When it originally launched a couple months back it was 2G only, they have done a 3G version for Australia now, and that's what this one is.

    • +3

Pretty sure this review is a better indication, looks more genuine and does an actual review showing the speed of the phone etc.

Btw the one at BigW is the 3G version.

    • +1

…and yet for those who "just want a phone" with physical keys, like those with bad eyes or arthritis, then this is a perfect replacement for the original 2G version.

My question is, what do you do with the second SIM, when it is locked to Vodafone?

Can I put in a Vodafone SIM, as well as one of my choice and configure it never to use the Vodafone SIM?

/ninjaedit: "without" eyes, wth did I autocorrect there?

      • +2

As mentioned below I think big w have made a misprint.
The Vodafone Nokia 3310 is single sim and does not come with a micro SD Card as pictured.
        https://imageshack.com/i/pmecibmrj
I also think the $90 outright one sold at JB is also single sim.

        • It is dual sim https://imgur.com/a/sv8uk (photo taken Friday).

        • @justdigi: NICE! now to see whether the true value is that SIM1 is only locked to Vodafone, and the second SIM is free.

        • @justdigi:
If its a dual sim model.. its NOT the voda prepaid model (as stated in the BIG W Ad)
Vodafone do not stock or sell the dual sim variant.

        • +2

          @justdigi: Nice coke nail.

        • +1

          @jimbobaus:
Even if it is dual SIM, it is likely 2G only on the second SIM. Unless it has one of the chipsets listed here (which is doubtful).
That would make the dual sim functionality useless in Australia anyway.

        • +1

@tomsco: Not my hand, but ok.

      • +1

now if only they can take the 5 day battery life technology of this phone and incorporate it into a smart phone…

yea, duel sim is pretty much waisted if it's locked to voda

  • +6

    Any info on unlocking?

    • Oh shit, yeah, I forgot about unlocking a phone it's been that long, maybe I might have to give this a miss.

  • +2
    • +22

"I missed getting instant access to new pictures of my kid as they were taken back at home."…..give me strength.

      • sounds like the type who updates facebook every time their kid poops or vomits

  • No gold? No deal.

  • +55

My 16 year old daughter is going to love this for Christmas …..

    • +53

i have a spare iphone x box if you need.

      • -4

I’d say there would be more technology put in to building the iPhone X box than this brick.
And the box would be worth twice as much.

      • +16

I wanted to upvote you for the idea, it then I wanted to neg you for buying an iPhone X, so it netted itself off…

      • People will buy the box off you.
        Chuck it on eBay lol.

        • +4

          Sad but true.

    • +2

If you want your daughter to be humiliated at school, then yes get her one :p

      • +2

Well then that would show her who her true friends are then, won't it?

        • +2

And your daughter can bash people who humiliated her with this brick…I mean phone.

    • +2
      • Thank you so much for reminding me of this. This may be the greatest anti-scammer prank ever pulled.

  • +1

It really looks nothing like the old version

  • Can it run apps?

    • This is a Nostalgia Phone, not a Smart Phone.

So no apps, 240x320 pixel screen, text entry via numeric keyboard - I just couldn't!

No wonder the battery lasts - there is little to use it on except calls, SMS & playing Snake😭

      • Exactly what mobile phones used to do.

      • +1

"Can it run Java apps" is a fair question.

        • Just Google that - yes, but…
Not what most people would think of as phone apps in 2017. However so many years ago… we would download ringtones, games, and simple apps to phones like the original 3310.

The Slogan for this phone is The Icon is Back😱

"It is also possible to sideload Java-based applications using the .jad and .jar format. Available apps are browsers, games, internet radios, etc." Wikipedia
          eg games
          Can load WhatsApp.

  • +5

    Perfect work phone.

    • +2

It's why I bought mine - needed a second phone for On Call and at work. It's a no brainer.

Getting one for the kid too (they ride the bus to school now), heaps easier to deal with than a smart phone. If it breaks, I can replace it 5-10 times for one smart phone.

  • +1

Memories! When will be 3G be switched off in Australia? I've read 2020 a couple of times, not sure if this has been 100% confirmed?

    • +2

I'm still using a 3G Android phone, running LineageOS 14, so I see no need to upgrade just yet.

Perhaps I can hold out for a Moto G8S Plus when Telstra and Optus will have their 5G networks available by then!

    • There aren't that many phones that do voice over LTE yet. Your 3G phone should be safe for some time to come.

  • -4

    I don't need this…I don't need this……I don't need this……I don't need this………I don't need this……I don't need this……Hang on.. I need this……I need this……I need this……I need this……I need this……I need this……

  • Good for grannies and pops…

    • +1

The Y550 is my grandmamas fave.
My gpapa is on my old white 8310.

      • 8310 - those were the days. Gramps has got good taste

      • My gpapa is on my old white 8310.

Must be with Voda…. has only a few months to live!

        • I hope your talking about the phone network, not gramps…

        • +1

          @sharkfan12: yes the phone network!

  • +7

People have to realise the original Nokia 3310 gained legendary status due to its tank-like built, you just can't kill it. This new phone isn't that kind of toughness anymore.

    • +5

      Just like the newer Hiluxes.

      • +3

To be fair, most Hiluxes these days are driven by preppy tradies who jack them with and wack on some 44" muddies but spend more time in the car wash than they do off-road.

        • Lol… to be honest I seriously looked at a dual cab hilux for a car only because they became what they were. Thought the missus would go for it.

          The old hiluxes don't die…

    • +1

The new phone easily passed the 9m drop test, after using mine, I can tell you - it's no where near as fragile as a smart phone. It may not feel like a brick, but it's still built like one :)

  • +1

    Great for making mashed potato

    • More like the potato will make a mash of this phone.

  • +1

This will be good for my grandmother. She's still running a 2G phone which is about to get turned off.

    • +5

Say hi to your grandma for me.

  • +2

too expensive for what it is.

  • Tried pulling the trigger when it was $69 @ Coles recently, but every store I went too was firing blanks. I just hope my local Big W has one…

    • +1

If you wait another few weeks it will probably be $39.00.

  • i bet you guys wish you still had youre old one so u could play snake hey, hey?

    • Phone optional.

    • Have an old working 3310 & have only spent a few minutes playing Snake since I got it new. This phone has new & harder Snake.

  • +1

A crap phone with nostalgia, is still a crap phone

    • -1

nostalgia will sell anything. The problem with this is it's not very good. I can easily play an old game system lke a super Nintendo because there's substance and quality there, it's timeless. This phone isn't timeless, it's outdated and redundant.

  • Perfect! Time to deal again…

  • How this "brick" phone is better that bricks in my wall?

    • +2

      Speak English you must not?

      • Perhaps you know the answer, sadly nobody gets my joke…

  • +1

    May be a misprint.
    Bought one from Coles recently
The Vodafone model is not dual sim… in fact I don’t even think the Nokia 3310 is dual sim anywhere sold in oz (jbhifi etc)
It also does NOT come with a 16gb micro SD card. It has like 32.6mb on board storage available.
    Pics:
    https://imageshack.com/i/pnfn1EvUj
    https://imageshack.com/i/pmecibmrj

    • +3

32.6mb is a lot space for hundreds of MIDI music.

    • +1

Wikipedia shows dual SIM models are available.

      • I am not saying there isn’t dual sim models.
I am saying the models sold by Vodafone (the one being promoted here) is not dual sim. This is most likely a misprint by big w.
The memory card inclusion is also incorrect.

        • Not disagreeing with you. I was more surprised a dual SIM model was produced. Cheap price for one if correct, depending on cost to unlock.

Mind you the basic Nokia 101 was dual SIM & sold very cheap ($37 at OfficeWorks 4 years ago) - had an unlocked one.

        • +1

It is dual sim https://imgur.com/a/sv8uk (photo taken Friday).

        • @justdigi:
          Thanks for confirming.
Need to unlock to make that useful, otherwise takes 2 Vodafone only SIM.

        • @Infidel: So both sims are locked to Voda?

        • @CLoSeR:
I'd say so. Phone would be locked, so both SIM would be locked.

        • +1

          @justdigi:

          See below:
          Confirmed with Vodafone
They do not stock or sell the dual sim version
You might have a dual sim one, but it is probably the outright version sold at HN or JB
          Its not the Vodafone model

    • +2

        Hi, how can I help?
        You:
        8:40
Hello, i have a quck question about the Nokia 3310 sold by Vodafone on prepaid. Is the device single or Dual sim? A retailer here has it advertised for sale as dual sim (voda version)
        Jonathan:
        8:40
        It is single SIM phone.
        You:
        8:41
Vodafone do not sell the dual sim version at all?
        Jonathan:
        8:41
        Yes, that's right.

        • +5

And how many times do customer service staff not know their own products, especially pre-release??

Was once told by Telstra that the phone I had bought from a Telstra store did not exist - I was ringing them on it. They kept arguing it didn't exist, despite being listed on their site😠

          We will see.

        • +1

          @Infidel:

Have sent the pic to big w for confirmation.
They checking with warehouse and letting me know.
If it’s dual sim I will be buying a couple that’s for certain.

        • @jimbobaus: Have you heard back from Big W?

        • +1

          @JLHC: just went to Ringwood.
They had a sign up saying it was single sim. (Correction notice)

  • -1

The old 3310 had an LCD screen like on an old Gameboy. This isn't faithful to the original.

  • +1

Any idea how much to unlock?

  • Locking the phone to a provider is so 1990.

    • I think in 1990 you would have had a sole choice of Telecom/Telstra for your car phone
