DiscoJango is right - it loads the S8 page when you click to buy the Pixel 2

  • Wtf. I got the S8 yesterday after debating for ages. I haven't even opened it yet, still sealed. I hope they'll let me swap.

    • Cooling off period?

      • Not sure if they have one seeing as I approached them. I did the whole thing in store, so could probably go back with the sealed S8 and swap. That's if I want to, the Pixel 2 has its drawbacks

  • +9

After wasting years of my life with floptus, whoregin and vodafail; including their el-cheapo re-sellers and Suffering from below par coverage and almost non existent mobile internet at times even in CBD. Finally moved to Telstra, difference is night and day. Not sure how those guys are even allowed to do business with such atrocious services.

    • I agree with this, on the Gold Coast. I've been with Vodafone and Optus (Virgin) but only on Telstra 3G (the old Kogan Mobile / Aldi prior to 4G being wholesaled). At my apartment, Optus ~8mbit has become 190mbit down on Telstra. In Southport South, ~5mbit on Optus has become 40mbit+ on Telstra.

    • +8

Give the other 2 telcos all the government subsidies telstra received over the decades and they would have similar networks.

    • I prefer keeping my money rather than given so much extra to Telstra. Optus is as fast in my area (sydney cbd) so I would just be spending more money for a service that has failed more than Optus.

  • This is so tempting, I was going to get the S8 on the weekend but got too busy. I love Google phones and had the Nexus 6P which was amazing before it's battery issues.

The question is do I get this or the S8, I know the Pixel 2 is the slightly newer and more expensive phone BUT the S8 looks so much sexier, has a larger screen with better resolution, a headphone jack and a Micro SD card slot. Having said that the Pixel is Vanilla Android (which I love), will get updates for at least 3 years and has front facing speakers.

Someone care to tip me either way?

    • +1

Get the Pixel 2 man, you won't be disappointed.

    • +8

As a day 1 S8 owner, I would suggest you get the Pixel. My 2 phones before were Oneplus 3 and Nexus 6, can't tell you how much I've missed the smooth vanilla experience.

After 8 months my S8 is so sluggish and battery health has deteriorated by 10%… overall not a good experience

      • So much for their claim of 95% battery health after 2 years… :(. Mine still runs like new though, 8 months later and as a heavy user.

How did you get the battery health stats? Root?

      • Sold my S8+ after 5 months of use and bought an iphone. Couldn’t deal with the lag anymore and deteriorated battery in such a short timeframe.

    • Pixel has front facing stereo speakers.

    • Had a nexus 6P and swapped to an S8 when this deal started. Very happy with the S8 and wouldn't have picked the pixel 2 even if it was available back then.

      • I'm in the same boat as 8azinga.
I'm definitely enjoying the S8, especially it's form factor! Comparing it to the Pixel 2 looks wise is insane, so much better.

My main gripe is I keep covering the down firing speaker…

    • +1

I would get the Pixel XL 2 over S8, but the S8 over the Pixel 2. Although I chose the Note 8 over the Pixel XL 2 after owning a series of nexus devices including the OG Pixel XL, and I couldn't be happier, it is the best looking phone out right now by far and the screen makes it amazing to use every time I look at my phone.

Just remember that the Pixel 2 screen is absolutely tiny.

      • it is the best looking phone out right now by far and the screen makes it amazing to use every time I look at my phone.

I just hope that it is still nice to look at when it becomes sluggish.

Just remember that the Pixel 2 screen is absolutely tiny.

This is subjective, much like how I feel that the P2 XL & Note 8 screens are way too big.

        • The note 8is as fast as pixel 2 as many speed tests have shown. Also nexus and pixel slowed down after updates just like every other Android. Factory reset cures all, just like majority had to do on nexus and pixel due to slowdowns. Agree completely about the size, but they said they have a 6P so it's a huge change.

        • +1

          @OnlinePred:

The note 8is as fast as pixel 2 as many speed tests have shown.

Rubbish, the Exynos has nothing on the SD, plus the Pixel's UI won't slow down over time as quickly as the Note's.

        • @Lorindor: pixel ui? You mean Android? Have you even owned a Note 8? It sounds like you are basing this on no actual proof but instead on something emotional and irrational

        • @OnlinePred:

          pixel ui? You mean Android?

You know exactly what I'm referring to when I say UI, so don't play dumb.

Have you even owned a Note 8? It sounds like you are basing this on no actual proof but instead on something emotional and irrational

No, and I didn't need to. There's nothing irrational going on here, I know what I want and need in a smartphone, as do you.

        • @Lorindor: my note 4 would get slow, then I factory reset it. My 5x would get slow, I would factory reset it. My 6p would get slow, I would factory reset it. My Pixel xl would get slow, I would factory reset it. My note 8 hasn't gotten slow yet as it's only been 3 months, I'm sure it will slow down as Android updates in general suck and Google apps suck also. Welcome to Android.

        • @OnlinePred:

All phones get slow over time, but there's no disagreeing that you'll experience it a lot sooner on a Samsung smartphone.

        • @Lorindor: There it goes again. So far so good, had to RMA 3 pixel xls in this time so doing better than pixel!

        • @OnlinePred:

Samsung's drop frames like crazy. The Note 8 might be a little better but have a look at the atrocious performance of the S8 vs Pixel 1

        • @Dano33: Yep, this is known. If you read into it it's due to the S8 missing out on 7.1.1 update which greatly increases performance. Luckily Note 8 is on 7.1.1 and S8 has beta for 8.0 of which performance is better than original Pixel (mostly thanks to new CPU) and Note 8 has better performance than P2 as can be seen on various youtube videos, perhaps this is due to more memory as most of the performance metrics are based on opening apps and recalling them later of which the pixels aren't very good as they drop apps quite quickly compared to the S8 and Note 8 - every other metric is things users can't perceive like 0.004 seconds longer to load here and there, compared to having to completely reload an application.

        • @OnlinePred:

It's not so much the speed as the smoothness for me. Frame drops do my head in and Samsung's have been notorious for it for years. I have no doubt the Note 8 is fast but I'd bet my last dollar it's not as smooth

        • @Dano33: As I have mentioned a number of times, I upgraded from a Pixel XL, and the Note 8 is noticeably faster and I have no idea about smoothness as I haven't noticed anything except that the note 8 is faster to do everything. The Note 8 is significantly faster and smoother than the S8 also if that helps you.

Anyway like I said, 7.1.1 was the introduction of the smooth factor as there were SIGNIFICANT performance improvements and animation improvements in Android, and again, S8 was on 7.1. I agree with Samsung slight lag and not as smooth, the Pixel was the smoothest phone I owned up until the Note 8.

        • @OnlinePred:

Fair enough. The Note 8 doesn't suit me anyway. It's too big

        • +1

@Dano33: Yea which is fine! It is only ever so slightly taller than the Pixel XL 2 while being narrower, but obviously a lot taller than the Pixel 2 haha

      • Just remember that the Pixel 2 screen is absolutely tiny.

I went from an S8 to the Pixel 2. The screen size was concerning at first, but I got used to it really, really quickly. I don't notice the smaller screen size now.

        • Yes I was just bringing it to attention. Going from 6p to pixel xl made me realise I didn't like smaller screens. Since I use it for media etc it made sense.

        • What else? Still debating whether or not to keep my S8 or swap it for the Pixel 2. Very interested in comments from people who have had both :)

        • @chromium: first gen pixel user, I'm running 8.1, stock update…goodluck if you're a Samsung user getting updates this quickly. 99% of your user experience is the software (hardware is almost the same once you get past the aesthetics). Easy choice for me.

        • @911r: Samsung has better hardware, and has better software. It might not be on the buggy 8.1 release, but who wants to be? Anything above 7.1.1 is fantastic, and Pixel still has no real benefit over an AOSP rom, has no real customizations or stand out features.

        • @OnlinePred: see Dano33's reply below. Also factor in camera performance and the lag you will see every few months. Personally I think the s8 is definitely a sleeker package and I can see the appeal, but buying a flagship that can't even keep up with updates is not my cup of tea.

        • @911r: As long as they get security updates, I am not concerned. Having been on the buggy builds that Pixel get I am happy for a stable phone. Given that camera performance is a subjective thing anyway (if you prefer natural photos you would pick S8?note 8 while if you prefer huge dynamic range and HDR with saturated colours then you go Pixel camera - but then screen is different as the Pixel screen is more subdued while the S8/Note 8 has more customisations).

Lag is something inherent in android, as my Pixel would lag after updates and require factory resets anyway, so it's not really an argument there.

Happy to answer more questions as I have actually owned Pixel XL, S8+ and Note 8 as well as previous phones being Note4/S7/5X/6P/HTC10

        • @OnlinePred: never experienced any bugs or lag on the pixel xl, also happy to answer any questions regarding pixel.

        • @911r: Wife has my old Pixel XL running 8.0 so I know all about it. Most people who talk about S8/Note 8 don't own one so that's what I'm getting at. Having owned both I can give my experience and findings.

        • @chromium:

What else? Still debating whether or not to keep my S8 or swap it for the Pixel 2. Very interested in comments from people who have had both :)

They're both good phones. I just wanted to try out the Pixel 2 for something different, having had just about all the S series phones, the HTC M7, M8, Essential PH-1, etc.

The S8 was really quick and zippy at the start, but six months later I started seeing very annoying lag when loading the camera app. There's also the strange problem where sometimes, a single tap of the shutter button gets registered as a burst of photos. That problem has been around since the S6 or S7.

The S8's screen is very nice. That said, it didn't take long for me to get used to the Pixel 2's smaller screen. The S8's awesome screen is nice to have, but not a big deal for me as the Pixel 2's screen isn't bad at all.

If I turn the Pixel 2 off by accident, it can immediately wake up by pressing the power button again. With the S8, sometimes there's a delay before it wakes up again.

Honestly if you already have the S8, unless there's a certain feature on the Pixel 2 that you really want, are experiencing lag, or you just want to try out Google's vision of Android, there probably isn't too much reason to switch.

    • +1

I considered the s8 as it packs in a lot, looks good and has a great camera but I'm not a huge fan of the UI (it has gotten better mind you). I like the original pixel and the pixel 2's camera is what got me over the line and I prefer this size over the XL. Bezels aren't an issue especially with front facing speakers.

Downside is the lack of headphone jack but I do have a dedicated music player for that and no sd card integration but the 'unlimited' google photos storage should be ok.

        Ahead of what exactly?

The screen on the S8 may be nice, but it lacks in mostly every other department: terrible UI, bad fingerprint sensor placement, half-baked personal assistant, should I go on?

      • -2

It's not ahead on software. Hell, it can't even match the Pixel 1

    • I love google phones too but the S8 does edges (no pun intended) out in terms of it's display and expandable memory. I have no regrets opting for the S8. But if it were the XL, i'd definitely go for it.

    • Thanks for all the comments, didn't make it much easier to decide valid points for both phones. =)

I ended up getting the Pixel 2 through the JB HiFi deal, figured I could use the $100 voucher toward a pair of Bluetooth headphones.

In the end I think the S8 would be a better short term phone (mostly for the better screen and nicer look), but I want to get 2+ years out of this phone so I figured Pixel 2 will most likely make the 2nd year onward a better experience with frequent OS upgrades.

Also bumped into a fellow Oz-Bargainer at JB getting the same deal.

Will go into a Telstra shop tomorrow and try to upgrade my $49 BYO to it.
Anyone know if they would verify you being a Family/Friend of a Telstra staff?

Will report back tomorrow once i got my hands on it.

    Cheers

    • Also interested to know if they will check this… Surely I have a Facebook friend that works with Telstra.

      • +1

They did not check for me at the Telstra store at Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast, on Sunday.

        • +1

Just say you saw it on their FB page. As long as you ask for it you'll get it, they can't just offer it to you. You'll have no probs getting it.

    • Anyone know if they would verify you being a Family/Friend of a Telstra staff?

      They won't.

If you go to https://www.telstra.com.au, click on Mobile Phones, Personal, the banner image at the top ("Two turtle doves and a Samsung S8")is for this deal. It shows the S8 but if you click on Find out more, you'll get straight to the friends and family page.

They're advertising it to everyone on their main webpage so it's family/friends in name only.

  • Do you get a bonus Home Mini? "Bonus Google Home Mini With every Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL"

    • Looks like it if you go 'buy now', comes up with the google home…

  • telstra chat guy recomended not buying the pixel 2 just yet (online) as it might cause an order stuff up. wait for them to fix their website (even though we know its just a wrong url)

Oh wow, I still have a month left on my Vodafone contract though

    • its worth doubling up on 1 months payment as this (awesome) deal only lasts until 25 december 2017

      • Does anyone know how i could do that and keep my number? Would my number port over and then I just have to pay exit fee for contract which should just be the one month fee?

        • +2

most likely that. i know back in the day if you were within 3 months of your contract ending, vodafone would let you upgrade for free. im not sure if that applies to cancelling your contract, eg: cancell with 1 month left and not pay and fines.

        • @DiscoJango:
Thanks, need to think about this as was actually just look to switch to a cheaper plan with Aldi or boost at end of contract. Question is if I want a new phone, I don't need one but I do want one :P

        • @2loud2old: many people are selling the phone they get from telstra as they are happy with whatever they have right now (which is what im doing)

        • @DiscoJango:
I also don't need that much data, would be happier if they had a cheaper option with less data tbh

  • fork me, just got my S8 yesterday

    • +1

Same with me on Sunday. Ah well, S8 is a better phone in my opinion with the exception of the camera and updates. I used to be a stock Android fan too but even coming from an HTC 10, I find Samsung UX to be pretty decent.

I see that the chat pop up isn't offering a bonus 5gb any more and the CIS lists a $79 plan with 20gb. I need the extra data for work and ain't paying $79pm

    • I just told the online chat that I saw the 5gb extra pop-up and she honoured it. But she did say I needed to have multiple services (which I did).

      • Thnaks, will give it a go

  • -3

    iPhone X is next

  • OK - I'm confused - normal price for a Pixel 2 + 15gig personal 24 month contract is between $79 and $99 pm - whats the catch? in fact the cheapest post paid plan is $69 - for 2Gb data.

(small print doesn't mention pixel 2 yet)

    • There's no catch. That's why it's a good deal.

      • but it's telstra!!!!

        • looks like competition in action…. for once

    • Probably just an oversupply of Pixel 2s

    • I've noticed Telstra seem to do amazing offers every 12-18mths which, in my opinion, they sucker everyone in, get them on 2yrs contracts then up the price for the rest of the time.

That's pretty much how I've been rolling. This is the first plan that gets close to replacing my grandfathered plan (2 Sims + unlimited call/SMS + 7Gb for $70/mth), esp now I don't need two Sims.

      • What phone did you get on that plan?

  • What's the Pixel 2 or iPhone 8 worth if you were to sell it straight away? plan would then be around $500 over 24 months?
    $21 per month. Not bad.

    • -2

This does not include the iphone 8

      • +1

They are referring to Optus $59 deal.

    • Pixel 2 would be worth more in my opinion. iPhone 8 may have a higher RRP, but the people getting the latest ang greatest (read: nothing's changed) iPhone don't generally care for price. Obviously they will be exceptions, but if you want a bargain you wouldn't buy an iPhone.

  • Own the phone or not?

    • Own.

  • If you like Android (and losing your headphone jack…), get this phone. Highly recommended.

  • Awesome deal. Personally don't think I could go with less than a 128gb phone with no mSD but for most people I imagine it will suffice.

    • +1

The days of expandable storage are slowly dying, especially with Google's offering of free unlimited original photo/video uploads.

      • Really? Because that 128gb card in my S7 seems very lively to me…!

        • You're only using it because it's an option and it's there.

        • @Lorindor: Nope, had a 64gb One+ before and it was bad. I do however agree I am the exception and most people would be fine with that much storage, especially coupled with unlimited Google backup space.

  • Is JB still doing a $200 voucher for sign ups?

      • Ah yes, that's it but can't stack with this… shame

        • +1

Ofcourse it can. Sign up to jb offer get $200, then Signup on the $59 offer as an upgrade. Done!!

        • @TomGum:

          Have done, or should work?

At the risk of being lazy, whats the process if I wanted to move the wife from Vodafone to a Pixel 2 (plus google home mini) via the JBHIFI promo - doesn't picking the JJBHIFI deal tie you in for 24 months?

        • @walaj:

The Jb offer is a byo offer which has no device. You sign up then upgarde to this offer. I dont think you will get the google home mini. Its not part of this offer.

        • @walaj:

To get the $59 plan with unlimited calls in Aus and 15gb with pixel 2 and google home mini all you need todo is provide her account number if on a plan with Voda or just her date of birth if she is pre paid at the time of placing the order and that will request to port the number from the other provider this is a 24 month contract

  • +1

Anyone had both the S8 and Pixel 2 and have an opinion on which one to get? I need to decide if I'm going to keep my unopened S8 or try and swap it for the Pixel 2

    • I have the s8 plus. The camera is okay and it looks pretty but thats about it. Samsung ruins their phones with touchwiz bloat and, oh, the bixby button? Don't get me started.
