TPG 50Mbps Unlimited NBN Plan $69.99 pm or $79.99pm inc. Local and Mobile calls

821

Looks like TPG are now offering a 50Mbps plan at the same price of their 25mbps plan.

Add $10 To include all local, national and Mobile calls. Even includes caller id .

Maybe due to the new NBN products launching-

https://www.computerworld.com.au/article/631206/new-nbn-pric…

Great news as even though I can max out 100mbps on my TPG FTTN plan at any time day or night (peak) a 50mbps will suit me fine and allow me to save $20 a month.

congestion topia. unless you are the few that dont suffer

    • NBN are saying there will be enough CVC included in the new products.

      • +3

NBN is only including 2mbps CVC with this 50/20 product and 2.5mbps with the 100/40 product. It's also not dedicated CVC and will be in the CVC pool as everyone else. So NBN are hoping that their efforts will help with congestion. The fact remains its still up to the providers whether they provision enough CVC per poi and its yet to be seen whether this will have any effect at all on performance.

        • Current CVC is around 1 - 1.1mbps per connection. Assuming they're going for these bundles 2mbps is insanely good.

Note the 2mbps in the bundle is about the same as 1mbps + 50mbps costs ISPs currently - it's basically an extra 1mbps for free. Assuming they don't then cut their CVC purchased by 1mbps, you should be pretty well off.

Overall, this price point is about the cheapest where you can expect a solid connection. It's around $15 in their pocket after GST, payment gateway fees, NBN fee ($45), etc. That's quite a small margin, but should be just enough considering they own their own backhaul network (AAPT). Any cheaper and I would start questioning it.

        • @dyl:

"Assuming they don't then cut their CVC purchased by 1mbps"

That's why this new pricing model from NBN is flawed. It doesn't affect the bulk of customers who are on 25/5 and below so there's no guarantee that average CVC per customer will increase at all. An RSP could keep it the same and just lower their costs.

        • @dazweeja:

It's more that it moves the sweet spot of good performance with minimal cost down. Currently that point is $90-110, it should now move down to ~$70-85 depending on data allowance.

The low tier el cheapo providers will put their prices down a few bucks and cheap out further, but there's now the choice of "do I pay ~$60 for crap or $70-85 for a solid connection?".

I recently got TPG NBN (HFC) set up at my place in Camberwell (VIC) on November 2017 and I get on average 85Mbps for my 100 plan (using Speednet).

Basically I can see up to about 11 megabytes a second when downloading my Steam or uPlay game update.

Right now very happy with what I have. Previously it was TPG ADSL with a max of about 8Mbps.

My place is also 60 meters from the tap (front of house) and so I'm specially impressed with speed.

      • +7

A lot of ISPs (eg MyRepublic) prioritise SpeedTest.net, you are better off using a more obscure speed test like speed.me for real life speeds.

        • +9

"Basically I can see up to about 11 megabytes a second when downloading my Steam or uPlay game update."

        • They usually peer directly with speed test servers, rather than it being a case of white listing.

In my case speed test is still lower when there's CVC congestion (quite rare for me), but fast.com and some other speed test sites/files are almost always lower at peak times (be it only 5-10%), while speedtest mostly stays solid.

        • +5

This is exactly why Netflix created fast.com - ISPs can't prioritise fast.com traffic without also prioritising netflix traffic.

        • +2

          @WazzaP: holy shit thats genius

          netflix buy speedtest.net plox

        • @Viper8: Riiight…Steam or uPlay game update…winkthumbs up*

        • @WazzaP:

Netflix content is often cached locally with the major ISPs, so it can at times be even less accurate than a unrealistically closely peered speed test server.

Steam content is also often really well peered as it's a mutual benefit for both steam and the ISP to not need to path traffic via external, costly paths.

Overall best bet these days is actually to look at how your ISP peers. I know my provider has a dedicated link to my hosting provider, so I know almost 24/7 (unless CVC is congested) I can get full sync speed to at least that server.

      • What modem do TPG supply for NBN?

I got an ADSL connection with them, and had to chuck their modem and buy a new one myself coz the supplied one was crap.
I have resisted "upgrading" to NBN in fear of having to revert to a new crap modem and again having to go buy a new one.

        • +1

Back in Feb 2017 I got a Huawei HG659 model. Works well for me. I get two networks with it. A 5g one that gives me the 85Mbps when connected to it wirelessly and a slower one (but with longer range) that gives me about 39Mbps. Very easy to set up.

Mate got TPG NBN yesterday and the modem they provided was TP Link Archer VR1600v so I guess my model was superseded.

          Hope this helps.

        • @danielh: The huawei modems were crap in my experience… low ram and slow processor. couldn't handle the load in the household (14 devices - 4 lan and 10 wifi - 5 mobile phones, 3 laptops, wifi printer, xbox one) and kept crashing. will have to read about the tplink device to see if it can handle what I push through.

    • seems like most people are happy, what speeds did you get?

    • I think the overwhelming TPG customers are satisfied and only a few are not, if I am wrong I am at loss to explain the low churn rate of TPG customers given the vast number of competitors.

      • +2

Because TPG are the MSY of Telcos.
Bad service but super value (read - cheap).

    • +1

Yeah you'll get congestion unless you don't get congestion

  • +4

Most people are wasting their money on high speed plans that aren’t achievable.

    • +1

That varies largely by the provider (available bandwidth from what they have bought from nbn) and the access technology used. My mate has nbn copper last leg to house and its quite fickle and doesnt get nesr his 50mbps. My bro on nbn fibre gets his near 100mbps. Im still on Telstra HFC and its always been up around 100mpbs+ too save for a few issues…. quietly dredding the switch!!

      • What happens when you’re on HFC?
The govt just buys it & does nothing?

        • +1

Nah, it gets hooked up into the NBN network, IP links, backhaul, support etc. A lot changes it seems. There are major problems with the frequency band NBN are using on the HFC causing issues coexisting with foxtel and its finally halted the rollout of it until they sort it out. Not really a problem Telstra has so must be specific to whatever the changes NBN have in their solution. Typical government, throw lots of money at something, attract a lot of gravy train employees more than anything, dictate policy driven by political priorities… all at our expense both in $ and frustration.

        • +1

@Xizor: Would never have been an issue if they 'built it once, built it right'
          "Better economic managers" my arse

          (I'm on Optus 1000Mbps HFC)

    • +1

Been with them for over a year, I haven't seen the desktop go below 90Mbps yet.

      • +1

mate anyone can max speed a local speedtest server. post a international speedtest to san jose around 2h before prime and at prime time

    • +2

I'm on 1gbit down and during peak times I get perhaps 850mbps down and 350mbps up. $129 a month yo, I can live with that tiny little bit of congestion

compared to Optus who throttle every ones connections and shape them until 2am daily when they finally unshape everyone, everyones in bed… "read the tiny fine print" they will tell you

TPG on 100/40 was not a problem on FTTP for years for me either. If you get on an unlucky exchange, just roll the dice with Aussie who offer a free month and no setup fees you can have multiple FTTP connections at the same time without having to disconnect the others so unlike DSL you can just try them all at once to find the best one for you

      • +1

        1gb? Whos this with?

        • MR, only available for a one year trial in a certain area

        • @donkey:
Wollongong. And I haven't seen anywhere that its only 1 year trial…

    • +1

true but I settled for the 25mbps plan because my max was 36mbps and I couldnt justify paying for 100mbps, very happy to change to the 50mbps and hopefully max out my 36mbps connection…i am yet to really experience any congestion issues but I am sure that will change as more people in the area get onboard

  • +1

dammit still only 25Mbps for FW

  • +6

Internode and iinet changed their plans also. I changed my iinet $99pm to the $79.99 as my line get 50/30

    • Thanks you for the info. I wonder if they would have let me know. Changed my plan and now it is $10 cheaper from next month. Same price as aussie broadband now for 50/20.

    • Thanks for the info.
Just changed from the $100 100/40 plan to the $80 50/20 plan. $20 cheaper and I also get free local and national calls, which I didn't get with the $100 plan.

      :)

    • +1

Thanks, just changed my iiNet Plan to the new 50/20. Was on the Max plan but only ever got 60/30 max with Fttn so this new plan works out better for me. $20 monthly saving plus now get free calls.

In reality though id prefer a 100 download+ solution but with the tech we are stuck with this new plan works out to be my best option atm.

Also I did not have to pay the downgrade fee…so kick up a stink if they try to get you to pay that as long as you're not getting the full 100/40 you shouldn't have to pay it.

      • Same I was really hoping Id get 100/40 as two mates are on iiNet in SA on HFC as well while they could get it, and get a bit over 90/38. Still beats my 11/1 ADSL at least =-)

  • +1

With TPG ADSL2+ now, but still no sight of NBN service available to my home for god-knows how long :(

    • Was told I could get it (TPG NBN) in Feb 2017. After a lot of hassles and needing NBN guys to come in and redo my LIC cable (as the pip broke) as well as a few cancellations by the contractor (that pissed me off no end), I got NBN installed and running (85Mbps avg) in November 2017.

Be patient and just hope that your speeds will be fast as well.

      • You were told that it'd be available in Feb2017 but was it actually available in your neighbourhood? Did you ask the NBN guys to come specifically install NBN just for you?

Or was it already available and they hadn't hooked you up and you had to call them to do it?

        • +2

Long story and the issues my mother-in-law experienced was worse (they ended up reporting TPG and NBN to VCAT):
          1. Told my place was NBN ready to set up in Jan 2017 by TPG
          2. I signed up in Feb (with TPG)
          3. First appointment was for Monday April 24 (day before Anzac Day)
          4. NBN contractors never turned up. I found out later after calling TPG that it was because of the weather (slightly sprinkly day but otherwise nice and sunny). Was very pissed off as took day off work
          5. Next available appointment 25 May 2017
          6. 25 May 2017: Contractors turn up and say that they were the wrong ones, they cannot plug me in as I need the 'box' installed. Once again had taken a day off work for no reason
          7. TPG said they would call me and let me know when the next appointment was available (many months go pass with TPG saying NBN is booked. I enjoy a nice one month holiday in Europe knowing that there is no way TPG and NBN will turn up in August)
Many many months of no contact from TPG passes. 25 May 2017 to 6 Sep 2017
          8. 6 Sep 2017: NBN people turn up without notice. My wife was leaving for work (I was already gone). She told them to come back another time
          9. 19 Sep 2017: Got a call from NBN and they said they will come on the 22 Sep 2017
          10. 22 Sep 2017: NBN dude turned up and did some drilling under my house and was setting up the LIC between me and my next door unit. This was apparently a two step job. The next job was for the following Thursday to thread the RJ11 from the PIT through the 20mm LIC (Lead In Conduit) between my place and the next door units PIT.
          11. 28 Sep 2017: That following Thursday I'm helping the NBN Contractor X thread the RJ11 (They wanted to put in the crapper RJ09 but the previous guy said don't accept anything less as I was 60m from the TAP in the front of the house and my line speed was really really bad. In fact they didnt think I would get ANY net with that sort of speed). Discovered that my LIC might be broken as we had problems threading it through the pipe. The contractor calls it in as an issue and NBN needs to come back again to bore a new LIC pipe to connect the two units together. Contractor X says he will be back once they are done
          12. 6 Oct 2017: Contractor X comes back and realises that NO ONE had come in to fix the broken LIC pipe. He makes a few half hearted attempts to thread the RJ11 through again but we kept on getting stuck. Contractor X calls it in again
          13. 23 Oct 2017: NBN came in without calling me and actually drilled in a new hole, connected the wires through between the units and set up that NBN box. I'm very happy at this point (although puzzled that I was not told they were coming)
14 10 Nov 2017: Had NBN guy come in (he called in a few days before) and he finished off the final connection from underneath my house through to the Coax cable connector in my stusy for the NBN modem
          15. SUCCESS. Got 85Mbps speeds.

    • +1

TPG adsl sucks arse. 1.5MBPS download in off peak and no service on peak. Changing to optus 4G now

      • Hmm not sure where you are. I am with their ADSL2+, my modem is connected to 14Mbps (1.7MBps) download speed and 1.0Mbps upload speed, that's quite typical for ADSL2+ speed. Of course cannot compete with full 100Mbps NBN download speed.

      • ADSL sucks in general depending on distance to exchange. I get 3-4 mbps, but it doesn’t matter who I go with, as long as ur line is cystral clear it’s probably a distance issue.

  • +4

With TPG FTTB now and speeds are so good. Paying the same as I would have with TPG ADSL2+.

    • does TPG FTTB requires technician appointment attendance INTO your unit for jumpering ? Or just repatch at basement MDF room.

i know NBN FTTB don't require anything. Want to find out about TPG FTTB as i can't take time off work.

      • They do need to come into your place, to check and confirm the pair change was done properly and to do a speed test.

However you can arrange with the technician to come on weekends if they are in the area. I did that with mine and no fee. Didn't even tell tpg. Techy smsed me and I smsed back.

        • Thanks! good to know.

          Will try request for weekend.

        • @phunkydude: Dont ask TPG. but ask the techhy when they sms/call you to book an appointment. They might even do evenings too.

    • +1 for TPG FTTB. Close to 70/80 mbps in peak hours and 100 off-peak. $59.99 per month. Meanwhile NBN is languishing with late 2018 as the projected date to be available in my area.

      • Just pray it never arrives then lolll

  • I’m on Optus HFC (yet to be NBN, but I’m guessing nothing changes) at $89.99 getting 100mbps (& tested just now)

    • What's your upload speed? IIRC the old (Optus/Telstra) HFC offerings maxed out around 3Mbps. NBN on the 100Mbps tier is 40Mbps up.

      • 2mbps at best

        • Yea, so most likely your changes would be increased upload and maybe decreased download (more congestion/lower service bandwidth) on NBN.

        • @elusive: and maybe more competitive pricing?

  • Currently with internode but wondering if they will 'price match' a plan ?

    • +1

Perhaps if they're willing to "service match" too …

    • +1

why would they price match themselves?

  • I get my FTTN next week, ive got everything crossed that i get the 50mbps im paying for. Im about 300 meters from the node. Anyone know at this distance whether that will be feasible?

    • Im about 250m from the node and i can achieve over 50 with aussie broadband so hopefully you will too !

      • Thanks mate. Ive also signed up with AussieBB. I did notice that 100mbps is only $5 more pm, then i started wodnering how close to 100mbps i would get at that distance

        • Aussie used to give the first month free. If they still are go for the highest speed. If you can't achieve it, bump it down. I'm 200m from the node and with aussie. Achieving around 70Mbps

        • @mvanree: Ah, so realistically me being 300 meters away, 50mbps seems to be about the correct speed

  • +4

I was with TPG for 15 years and they messed up my NBN so bad. I cancelled and went to Aussie Broadband, paying $5 more a month but the service is on point and speeds are great and no lock in contracts. I am so disappointed at what TPG have become..

  • +3

Thanks heaps for this OP. Just upgraded my existing plan from 25/5 to 50/20 for no extra charge.

    • I'm on 25/5 too, did you just chat them online and they happy to upgrade you?

      • +1

just do a plan change online. same value no uograde costs.

        • +1

          Does the contract period change?

        • nope

      • I just called them up and they did it for me on the spot

    • Yay thanks was wondering if I needed to call to upgrade 😶 is it a same day upgrade or next bill month?

      • Not sure when it upgrades, but TPG said the billing period may change, so probably today or tomorrow.

  • what is that TPG FTTN people talking about?

    • +2

fibre to the node. The usual copper wires run to your house but this is the point at which it all potentially slows down

    • +4

      Liberals.

    • TPG has been laying down it's own infrastructure but mainly in apartment buildings I think.

  • +2

thank you sir! i've been waiting for this to happen.. plan already upgraded!

  • +2

This is great. I could never get above 40mbps on my FTTN connection, but needed to max out so I had to pay for the 100mbps, now I'm saving over $30 per month for this plan!

  • -7

I'm with MyRepublic since it launched. Only had one down time in that period. $69/Month for 100/30 but in reality I'm getting 75-85/25. If you can get NBN, I would recommend MyRepublic. I've had no congestion issues.

    • Same here. Would recommend MyRepublic as I get consistent 95mbps although I am the lucky few who have a FTTP connection. I was with TPG and got the same speed and better ping but MyRepublic is cheaper.

    • +2

im fine with TPG and have no desire to try a new ISP .. my current max speed is 50/30 (FTTN) so there is no need for me to go through changing isp's etc and pay the same price for a higher plan that i wont be able to use anyway.

As a new customer yes there are cheaper out there but as an existing customer i think its a good option/deal. Not sure it calls for a neg of the deal .. :)

    • +3

Wonder why this person got downvoted to oblivion?

      • +1

guessing because he negg'd the deal .. i replied but wasnt going to down vote him for valid alternative for new users :) not so much for me ..hehe

      • +2

Ive heard mixed reviews about Myrepublic from whirlpool

        • +2

i cant find a single ISP there isn't mixed reviews about.. they are all "crap" just a degree of crap your personally ok with .. hehe im fine with tpg's crap as i've been with them for nearly 2 decades (yes yes starting from dialup days (when they merged with TIG hehehe) … better the devil you know!

        • +1

I think MyRepublic use the Optus CVC which seems to have a poor reputation, especially for FW.

        • +1

@Savas: they have their own. Just like belong/telstra

        • @bobzor bargain: Oh just goes to show even Whirlpool can be wrong!

    • +1

I am with MyRepublic, my contract is ending next month and I am so waiting to jump ships. While the speeds with MyRepublic have been great, the biggest concern that I have is their ping, my connection ping has never been below 80ms. Some of the live streaming apps that I use don't like high pings.

      http://www.ihiji.com/how-lan-latency-impacts-streaming-video…

So for some people like me this might be a better deal.

      • Wow, I get dial speeds at the end of month but my ping is always 20 or less, and can game no problem on adsl. That is pretty terrible ping.

        • Yeah probably because of your location. MyRepublic use Carrier Grade NAT with servers all located in Melbourne because the location of my internet IP shows Melbourne.

  • I am on the 25mbps plan with TPG; can i switch?

    • +2

i just did :) .. i checked my max speed (on my modem) and its 50/30 so this for the same price is great for me :) you can go through change of plan and it'll be an option.

      • very cool! thanks. does it affect the contract period?

        • +1

im in no lock in so when i got the email it was still in a no lock in … i dont know if your in a contract maybe call them and make sure they dont reset the contract :)

        • +1

I'm in the same boat as you. Already enquired about plan changes with TPG earlier… no it doesn't reset your contract.

        • +2

I just called and upgraded. No change to plan period or repayments.
