Thanks op! Can anyone make a recommendation between the 49in Sony and the 55i Hisense?

    • +23

      The Sony is smaller.

      • However… bigger isnt always better!!

        • thats not what she said…

  • +1

What is the difference between samsung ua and qa? Is the qa better? It's out of stock though

  • +1

Good price on the UA55MU8000WXXY but its lacking Dolby Vision :/

    • +2

Not really futureproof by not having it but most movie studios are still on HDR10, so would be ok for now. Think i read somewhere that one in three Aussies buy a new TV every year so that's for next year's model 🤣

  • +3

these are great price. same as our staff sale price.
only thing, we are getting a free xbox with the tv puechase.

    • Wow the staff price seems to be better on GG vs JB's where there make a profit on us buying through them vs Direct to manufacturer

    • +2

hand on, no. i checked again. these prices are better than our staff price(esp for ua55).
i dont work for gg. i work for samsung.

      • What do you do for Samsung? if you don't mind me asking :)

        • back office

  • Damn, wish they'd list the 70" TCL. Anyone have any other recommendations for a bang for buck 70-75"?

recommendations for a bang for buck 70-75"

Not sure about that big but you can get bang for bucks on Craigslist or GrindR.

  • what's the Ozb opinion about QLED vs OLED?

    • +31

From a distance both words look the same

    • +5

QLED is marketing (with very slight tech changes), OLED is technology.

That being said QLED's actually look pretty nice in person because they are super bright. But OLED panels are more expensive and produce the best blacks on the market.

    • -1

its been played to death on Ozbargain sigh.

    • +1

      LED,QLED,ULED = LCD
      OLED = New tech

    • +1

Pretty close in my opinion from what I saw, yes the OLED has better blacks but that's about it and of course the big price difference

My advice to anyone looking at the smart TV to stay clear of Samsung if they're using its built-in apps. Samsung tizen OS is buggy as, have to unplug it every time to reset the apps and next time it happens again.

    • I don't have too many issues. I have to reset netflix maybe a couple times a year when it crashes, but nothing too dramatic. (65JS9000)

      • Do you use YouTube or plex apps? These are are the the most buggy one.

        • No issues with YouTube that I can remember, I don't use Plex anymore. I have a Nas drive that automatically shows up in "sources". So I just open my movies in that now. I agree, it could be better. But none of them are foolproof and Sony has taken androidTV off their lower end models.

        • I use Youtube and Plex regularly (especially Plex), haven't really had a problem.

    • I think the only app I've had issues on is the iView app when it can't get a connection. When I first got it in 2014 it had a few issues but I think that was attributed to it being a new release at the time and most of the noticable bugs were sorted within 6 months through patches.

    • Agreed it can be very annoying (65KS8000) but soft resetting it fixes it.

    • I agree. I prefer my sony android over samsung tizen. I pretty much just cast everything now on android TV - which is much better than using built-in apps

      • Whats the motion like when casting vs the actual apps ?

        • Wifi was bad in plex but when I wired everything with EOP it was perfect

        • No difference on my Sony.

        • @MountFranklin: I got the TV few metres from the router so managed to plug directly to it. But recently found out through the Asus ac68u that it only went to 100mbs so back to wireless now and enjoy 3x speed. Bloody Samsung, Who'd have make 100mbs lan nowadays?

  • Does anyone have any ideas on why the curved screens are cheaper than their equivalent flat screen? Just a reflection of market demand?

    • I don't think curved screens are particularly useful for a TV where viewing angle should be wider

    • +5

      Nobody is buying them??

      • Nobody is buying them correct. Samsung hasn't come out with a curved model this year in Europe compared to a few the year before, simply because of this. Just a fad and will die like 3d did on TVs.

    • +1

my guess would be that not many people have a dedicated "cinema" room (where lounges are all central in the room) that can benefit from a curved screen.
Generally people buy TV's to watch at wide viewing angles so curved is useless

      • Generally people buy TV's to watch at wide viewing angles so curved is useless

If you are viewing the TV at an angle you should not be buying a Samsung LCD, regardless of curve. Samsung use VA panels that start to lose picture quality if viewed at an angle even 20 degrees off-center. Whereas the curve makes little difference until extreme angles around 70 degrees or so, where the lip begins to obscure your view.

Basically if you want to view TV at a wide angle, you should be looking at an LG LCD (IPS panel, 30-50 degree viewing angle) or an OLED (80+ degree viewing angle) before worrying about curve.

        • -1

Well the biggest thing for consumers is the feeling of needing to watch the curved screen from the middle. Whereas you don't get that perceived feeling when watching a flat screen.
You don't need to know anything about screens to get that perceived "need" to sit bang on centre due to the curved screen

        • Well the biggest thing for consumers is the feeling of needing to watch the curved screen from the middle.

Never heard of this. Had a curved OLED for 3 years and no one has ever has ever mentioned this "feeling".

Rtings says curved screen actually slightly improves viewing angle: https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/picture-quality/viewing-angl…

Personally I think the curve barely makes a difference. Just a gimmick really.

You don't need to know anything about screens

It's not rocket science. Just view any VA LCD from an angle and the picture will wash out. VA = Deeper blacks but bad viewing angle.

"VA loses contrast at an angle, resulting in a dull/whitish picture when you watch the TV from the side.
The upside of a VA panel is the deeper blacks you'll enjoy when sitting directly opposite the screen." - rtings.com

  • Is the Hisense 55N6 better than the TCL 55C2US?

    • +1

Been looking at Hisense and TCL 55" for a while…
GG and HN recommend Hisense over TCL every time….
I would go Hisense based on the picture comparison in shops.

      • Thanks meniac. But I've read that TCL 55 was rewarded with the "Best buy 2017-2018" by EISA….but I'll try to see them at the store before deciding!

  • Can anyone comment on the likelihood of boxing day sales for Uhd tvs? Missed out on the $598 jb mu6100 deal. Looking at replacing my parents nine year old samsung plasma with something under $800.

  • Looking for a TV for my Outdoor area, it will be in a dry area and won't get wet or have direct sunlight on it. What's the Hisense N6 like? Is it worth paying extra for the N7, don't want to spend too much on a TV that will be outside. I can't find the refresh rate for the N6 is it 100Hz?

    • If you want to be able to view the TV at an angle, as is often the case outdoors, buy LG or Panasonic LCD with IPS panel.
