  • How different are these mechanically to the $20 kmart ones? Probably a stupid question but I've read there's good and bad ways to grind coffee. Thanks

    • +13

Most grinders below $100 are really choppers, and produce too much variance in grind size to be good enough for espresso.

      • -5

        You really know your grinders.

        • +8

You really know your useless comments.

You know not how to behave in public. Get back into your crazy-cave you GC meter maid

        • +3

          @hell0: hello Scab alt-account

        • +5

          Well that escalated quickly…

        • +1

          @minijumbuk:

People act really weird when they see the word grinder.

        • -1

          @Scab: I'm gonna get popcorn

      • Thanks, i'll definitely save up for a good grinder as i'm steering away from ground store bought coffee.

    • This is a conical burr grinder vs. a whirley/spinning blade found in the cheapies. Those cheap ones are basically just spice grinders, not ideal for coffee.

      • +2

        spice

I think the cheapies are mostly used for chopping up herb you smoke

  • Got this along with the EM7000. $487 for the machine isn't the best price, but I'll take it.

  • Is anyone else having trouble checking out and paying for this item?

    • -6

      i havent tried it yet

    • +1

Yes I did. Ended up choosing a different store for pick up and went through straight away.

  • Damn it, just bought the Sunbeam one yesterday!

    • +3

      can you return it?

      this is definitely better.

      • I know, I've got one and use it every day :) The Sunbeam was for a Christmas present. About half the price though (both with 20% discount), and both are conical burr. Will see how the Sunbeam goes I think!

        • +1

I bought this to upgrade from the sunbeam one. The sunbeam is good, if you dont get fine enough grind, you might need to contact support for the spacer part which raises the gears.
Anyway, i upgraded because i'm a bit over the inconsistent dosing i'd get and would prefer to just find the perfect amount and get the same dose every time.

        • @Grandpipe: also much less messy

      • +2

Return it if you can. I have the Sunbeam which was great value at the time, but currently this is superior.

        • As grinders, they are about the same. The only advantage of the Breville is the measured dosing.

        • +4

@gwindsor: I have owned both, and the Sunbeam is an extremely messy machine, with grinds flying everywhere, and also the grinds seem to want to cover the surface of the machine due to some weird buildup of static. I don't get any of this with the Breville. Plus I think it looks better!

        • @nortyjak: Yes, agreed, it is messier as well, but both grinders give a good consistent brew (I have owned both too).

  • Another purchase I didn't know I needed

  • If I bought this and bought the dual boiler which was on here for $650ish isn’t that a better deal than buying the duo pack that has both these machines for $1499? Or does the duo pack include extras you couldn’t get if you buy the grinder and espresso machine separately?

    • Definitely get them seperate. Each is better at doing it's own duty.

      • +2

The duo pack is actually the grinder and machine packed in one box rather than an all in one unit. Checked the model number contents and it matches the individual units too. Check it out here https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/breville-the-dual-boiler-with…

        • My mistake, I thought you were talking about the machine that incorporates a grinder.

There's nothing extra included in that duo pack that you wouldn't get from buying these items separately (which I've done, they're both great).

Save $500+ and get them separately.

        • @corbz:

Sweet. Thanks for that confirmation. I will be having a good Xmas and new year with this. Hope you have a good Xmas and new year too

  • Bugger I purchased this from the Good Guys yesterday for $200!

    • What came first? 20% or $199? Unlucky either way!

    • You should have bought another one for $159 and return it with the $200 receipt.

  • Thanks OP!

Just bought one for pick up from Bayswater, someone bought the last one from Nunawading. Now I gotta drive out 15mins!

    • Probably me. Sorry!

  • Got this as a gift couple of weeks ago. Performance and specs are easily good enough to match/better any $300-400 grinder I have come across. Great value at this price.

  • just bought one. Thanks OP. CBF driving so paid the $12 delivery… Not very oz-b of me.

  • I can't recommend this grinder enough. I make pour over every morning at home, so am a bit picky when it comes to grind. I've had mine over 3 years and it hasn't missed a beat. It really is a bargain, as you'd be spending a lot more to get something this good and durable!

  • A really solid grinder. Sold an Italian grinder for this and don't regret it at all.

You can't do anywhere near as good for this price.

  • Could I use this in a commercial environment? Want a machine that my staff will find easy to use and don't want to fork out for a commercial unit as coffees are not our main business. I will be buying a 2 group espresso machine.

    • +1

Doubt it, would be too slow and wouldn't last long.

Check out Seattle Coffee Gear on YouTube - they have some good videos on choosing grinders (and other equipment) for varying workloads and budgets.

    • +1

If you are buying a two group, this is prob too slow and not as reliable as you would want.

For instance a 20g grind will take around 17seconds or so.

  • +2

FINALLY - I've bought one, after deliberating about it every time one of these has come up on Ozbargain over the last 18 months or so!

I don't know why the decision has been so hard - I love my stovetop espresso, but I've always used pre-ground Merlos coffee (ground when I pick it up).

I never seem to deliberate so long about anything else on Ozbargain - like most of us it seems to be a never-ending series of impulse buys!

I suppose I'll be ditching my Bialetti for a machine next :)

Any suggestions as to the best one in the Sunbeam EM7000 price range?

Does Breville have an equivalent? I've always had good experiences with Breville quality generally.

    • THe BES920 @640 is the cheapest its been ever. It's an xlnt machine, don't bother messing with anything else.

      • Thanks, Zero.

The 920 seems like the way to go, especially at that price.

However, I've committed myself to overspending on other stuff over Christmas, so I'll have to hope that the price will come back down to that level again early in the new year!

Incidentally, I see from the the specs that the EM700 has a 58mm commercial size brass group head.

However, I can't see any info on the BES920 group head. Do you happen to know if it's similar to the Sunbeam?

        • I doubt you'll see it cheaper, unless a new model comes.

The 920 has a 58mm, proper handle. But it won't fit any machine as the lugs are designed to make it easier to locate.

  • +1

I bought the dual boiler as a gift for a friend. I'm not sure if they have a grinder though…
Do I need to get this?..or they can get it themselves? Haha

    • I did the same for father in law. He used to buy ground beans from comes half price specials. But when I gave him the dual boiler he decided it was time to get the grinds perfect and he bought one of these himself. He's very happy now. Easily cafe quality coffees with this combo

    • They can always use preground coffee (not as fresh) or buy their own grinder if you don't want to spend anymore

  • Good price
