They had similar deals last year which I sign up for and it worked perfect for me."

Althought for the country that I normally call it only cost me 8c/per call anyway, but because I make calls every day so it did save me a bit of money.

  • Pennytel are crap… They deleted my account after i didn't use it for a year and when they reinstated it, they would not renew my account balance and they lost all my history… They stole about $30 off me !!!

I'd never ever use them again…

They deleted my account after i didn’t use it for a year

Well you did not really need the account then.

There must be something in their terms and conditions which say you need to use the account once per year to keep it.

If you do not use the account then you are costing them money by having a phone number which is not being used.
Issuing a phone number costs them money.

It is bad that you lost the money but if thats what the conditions said then you should have made a call to prevent your account being deleted.

Well you did not really need the account then.

yes i did… I had to switch across to another provider because i was have technical problems with Pennytel… When i replaced my ATA, i found out i could no longer access my account…

There must be something in their terms and conditions which say you need to use the account once per year to keep it.

no, there wasn't… it was a 'free' account without credit expiry… (but they expired it anyway)

but if thats what the conditions said

        the conditions didn't state that…

        • That is bad.

Well if you sign up for the free calls you can spend some of the $30 they took from you.

I dont know why people have given your comment negative votes for explaining what happened to you

ohh hmm I started using them last year and I only recharged my account once with $20 and it lasted me forever because I also used their money transfer which gives me call credits! I called China like twice a day and it only cost me like 16c… Never really had problem.. although I have only used the smart dial but not the sim.

  • Site is not working for members. Click the existing members to get you to http://promotions.pennytel.com/xpromo/website_landing.html. When you put in your acct number, it tells you to "Please enter a valid email address."

    • just put in the email address that you used to register with Pennytel.

It worked for me, and I will test out the free calls tonight.

      • Yep just entered my email. Working now. 10M comes up on my account now.

    • Yeah it worked for me too. I just entered the e-mail that I normally used to log in to PennyTel portal and saw this thank you page, http://promotions.pennytel.com/xpromo/index.html

Pennytel? Been with them for years. Highly recommended!

    • I agree…I must have saved 100s of $ in calling card costs using Pennytel. Not to mention the convenience. I agree that there are bugs sometimes - some of the numbers called do not work. But their support team generally resolve the problem in a couple of days.

    • I have two pennysims and voip with them, have been a customer for three years. I have experienced the odd problem here and there over that time, and their customer service leaves a lot to be desired. However 99% of the time it just works, and for the price I pay, Pennytel is fantastic!

    Hi Guys,
I had a very bad experience with pennyel so would recommend everyone not to get attracted toward any deals.
When I got the connection they were debiting charges from my account every 3-4 days(ranging from $10-$30).
After I was fed up with this, I got my number disconnected and even though they were debiting charges from my account each month.
This went up to 1 year and I need to follow up a lot to stop this.

    • Wow cb, you must really hate them it even promted you to registed at Ozbargain today just to tell ppl about your experience…

      • everyone needs to register at some point if they want to post comments…

      • Well, I had really bad exp with them as well. I spent nearly half year to get my money back.

        • i gave up after a month… found them really unhelpful… They would never answer my questions directly… only give you half answers…

there are many other cheap providers out there with much better customer service…

      • Yup, i really hate them a lot which prompted me to post comments over here.

Have been with pennytel for one year now. Use them to make voip calls. Never have experienced problems like above. Happy with them.

  • How the hack do you make free calls from iPhone. I registered with pennytel and got username/password. Install iphone and then put in username/password and then how to make free calls????

    Man its sooo confusing…

    • You can only make free calls to Australia*, Canada, China, India, Hong Kong, New Zealand*, Singapore, the UK* tho.

So if you are calling one of these countries, you just need to click on the link above and enter the e-mail address that you used to register with pennytel. Once you done that, log into PennyTel Portal to check that you have the writing in red "(with 10M Minutes Free)" on the top right hand corner. If you see the message that means you have registered yourself to this promote and you could just make calls from your iphone using the pennytel app to all the above countries for free I assume =)

Correct me if i am wrong cause I never tried the sim or the app.

Free for landline and mobile numbers as well?

    • Not free to mobiles in Australia, New Zealand and the UK

  • I tried through iphone app and it says u dont have enough credit to make calls. I can see the writing in red though in my account saying "with 10M Minutes Free". I am trying to india which is part of these deal. Not sure what i am doing wrong.i tried with wifi, 3g as well and it doesnt work.

    • Did you put some credit in the account? It is a requirement, even if these calls are free.

    I hate Pennytel.

    • +1

I LOVE THEM. Been a user for almost four years now!!!!!!!

  • ok so I'm new to all of this and am not sure what I'm doing at all.

I've signed up. I ahve a username and password which they generated for me. I logged in and i have an email saying to click on "My Portal" which I can't find anywhere and a different email which say to click onto "free softphone" which I can't find either.

Its does say that I am on the free access plan (with 10M Minutes Free) but I have no idea what that means. does it mean I have 10,000 free minutes, or 10 million minutes or just 10M minutes

Now how to make those phone calls is equally unknown to me so here is my details:

    1) I don't have a landline, I only use a mobile
    2) I only intend on calling mobile phone numbers, however, if there are 10 million free minutes then I may as well call landlines too.
    3) I'm mostly interested in this service for when I go to Thailand so i can call back home

So what do I need to know?

    thanks

  • Damn, this thing is good~ I just singed up and made calls to overseas and the call quality is just good, and it's totally free! Thanks OP for this stuff~

jug_head, once you signed up, you'll receive like 3 emails from them. Then you go to their webpage and login, go to "my portal" then click "pennytel softphone" (on the left panel of the webpage) and it will promt you to install something like a Java script. After installation you'll see a dial pad on your screen, dial your number and off you go.

    • so i need a voip phone?

i couldn't see "my portal" will look again.
      Thanks fox

Hi, here are the ways you could use PennyTel to make a call (copied from the portal)

"We offer multiple ways to make phone calls, so there are no restrictions on where you can use our services.

        (1) iPhone App - Download the PennyTel Mobile App from the iTunes App store

        (2) Softphone - Login to your customer portal and launch the softphone to call straight from your computer

        (3) Landline - Connect your phone to an ATA (Analogue Telephone Adapter) - you can purchase an ATA from us. Login to our website and click on the shopping link

        (4) SmartDial - Call direct from your mobile by using our innovative SmartDial service"

Personally I normally use the softphone (you can find this on the right hand side of the portal above FAQ) when I travel overseas and wanna call back to Australia, cause no matter where I am calling from, my call will be treated as a Aus to Aus domestic call.

But I use smart dial when I am in australia because its easier since I don't need a PC. In case you are not familiar with what smart dial is.. hmm its hard to explain .. basically its like I go on the portal and enter the China number I wanna dial, PennyTel syn it for me and give me a landline local number such as 8989 88xx that equals the oversea number. So i will call this local number everytime I call china and I only pay 8c (PennyTel call rate) + 18c (optus landline fee) = 26c PER CALL

        Hope you understand my rambling

      • I use a program called zoiper.

It is free and works well

  • just registered… I am using Pennytel for several years. save loads of money to make oversea calls.

  • Used Pennytel for about 8 months using voip phone. Never experienced any probs and resolved a couple of minor things with no fuss. Use it for all calls and only keep landline as it's a bundled plan.

  • Anicallback only working manually today…

    Congestion.

  • Haha yay awesome time to wardial whole prefixes again searching for auto-answering emergency phones…

    • auto-answering emergency phones…

Why ring an emergency phone if it is not an emergency?

      • Yeah, I'm a little unclear on the motivations myself?

Besides, war dialing might require the use of a DeLorean, psychadelic pimpmobile, hippie VW Beetle or some other time travelling vehicle to get back to the 80's & 90's when it was relevant! :p
