Pretty much like every other computing device that people take to uni. Note taking and browsing the web.

        Best joke ever

          Lmao, good joke

I think it's a great productivity device. For some light users, it is a capable replacement.

      • +12

Notability is a pretty nice app. Records audio as you type or write notes. You can then replay the audio and watch the notes draw. The feature is pretty handy for reviewing key parts of lecture audio without having to scrub through hours of audio to get to some specific topic. Additionally, you can just mark some times by drawing a * as a kind of bookmark, then wait for it to appear while moving the playback scrubber.

        • +5

          +1 Notability is freaking awesome.
It’s what I used for 4 years of uni.
I would download the lecture slides, write notes as I recorded the lecture as as mentioned above you could click on the handwritten notes to go to the part of the recording that you wrote it.
Would be so much nicer with an Apple Pencil instead of a cheap stylus but hey uni students aren’t made of money.

        • And does that involve reproducing the notes to demonstrate that you actually learned them?

        • +2

@Diji1: What do you mean exactly? You don't have to reproduce the notes from the slides. Often the notes serve as talking points for lecturers and by summarising what they say, you're gaining a lot more than what is listed in bullet point form on slides.

        • +1

          @theguyrules:

The full version of OneNote does this, but much better… especially with a really good resistive stylus. Not sure if Notability does this, but onenote also indexes your handwriting in the background. So it leaves your handwriting alone (un-OCR'd) but allows you to do keyword searches on your handwriting and the audio!

Converted several of my colleagues from ipads to windows/Onenote devices when they saw what it could do :)

Even a very cheap first gen surface does an amazing job.

        • @Rebenga: Notability does similar.
I don't think the surfaces actually existed when I was in Uni, but if they did, they were no where near the price of a used iPad.
I got my iPad 2 for $250 and it covered me for uni no worries.
That said, the iPad Pros on offer here are way too expensive.

        productivity device

That's the thing. It doesn't do anything to increase productivity.

Amongst students from a middle to high income background it will do nothing to grades and it will slightly decrease the grades of students from a low income background.

The iPad Pro and the beat are for listening to Apple Music.

    • +1

Still better than beats product tho

    • +4

I have an iPad Pro with Pencil for work. I use it to take meeting notes, where it is a hell of a lot less intrusive than a laptop, contain all my notes, PDfs and journals, integrate photos, videos and data points, edit briefs and correspondence, approve leave and expenditure, complete GPS located forms in the field for remote upload, all in a very portable and compact device, I think it would be highly suited for university.

A surprising amount of number crunching or video editing can be done on it, but a laptop desktop computer of course would be much better for those purposes. I have a HP 13 inch laptop hooked up to a display etc on my desk, but since I got the iPad Pro the HP stays on the desk. Mostly. There are times when I still take it as well, say a trip lasting several days but often at the end I realise the HP has stayed in the bag.

But yes, I am extremely pleased with the iPad Pro, and think it would be the perfect lecture /note taking / collaboration device.

And of course, if you wanted a more traditional device as well, say an iMac, Apple would very happily sell you one of those too. Look on the bright side, you would get two beats earcovers for double the bargain and double status points!

written on an iPad Pro 10.5 using an Apple Pencil.

      • -2

Or you could combine the 2 devices and get a Surface Pro. Why is the iPad so good??

        • +2

I have had a surface pro 3. A good hybrid device, but is not as good as the HP (which replaced it) at being a laptop, and is a poor tablet compared to an iPad Pro, particularly for field work.

Obviously I am not really recommending both are bought together. That was a bit of a joke. But if my son was starting uni this year, he already has his gaming desktop, so I would think an iPad Pro would be a good complement.

    What's everyone lol ing about

    • +2

I'm guessing because of the Beats. Link

      • I bought some beatsX, mainly due to the W2 chip and reassured by consistently good reviews (even Choice rate them very highly). Man they were terrible. They have artificially boosted specific frequencies to make them seem [OMG so crisp and clear], and perhaps most surprisingly they are lacking bass. So harsh, bright, fatiguing.

    • +1

      Lol. Just kidding.
Facebook and watching Tumbler, I guess.

  • Valid for students AND parents buying for their kids.
    AND teachers / uni lecturers

But from my experience, Beats suck and feel like a vice around my normal sized head.

    • +1

Powerbeats3 are good.. Very suitable for gym.

      • Second this. Best gym headphones on the market today. Battery lasts forever, comfortable, block out good amount of noise, insane range with the Apple BT chip, and don’t fall out despite doing anything from cardio to bench.

  • +7

    lol

  • +3

The price markup on this iPad Pro would likely more than cover the price of the Beats Solo 3 that Apple is giving away. So figures how Apple can give these away and still make a profit.

    • Probably because the price markup on Beats far exceeds price markup margins on iPads, Macs, etc. Apple own Beats. Best thing to do really is just sell them. Beats wireless are allegedly quite good in terms of range, battery and quality thanks to the W1 chip, so selling them shouldn’t be a difficult task.

    • So that Apple can sell both, instead of each, at a time, quicker.

    • +1

Actually I've checked, you only get BeatsX Earphones for free. Beats Solo 3 gets $200 knocked off the price. Therefore you still need to pay $200 (original price is $399.95) on top of the device you are purchasing.

      • with iPad Pros, yes, BeatsX Earphones comes free, the others you gotta pay an additional amount (which is discounted)
with the Mac range, they are all free (correct me if I'm wrong)

        • Yes you are correct, it's only the iPad Pros that had to pay extra for Beats Solo 3.

  • Targetted to uni students?

  • +5

Buy an overpriced computer and get some overpriced headphones free!

  • -2

beats are great headphones. if you're true audiophile - you know the coverage the solo 2 and 3 have been getting. looks good, sounds good, folds down nicely, doesn't have gaamerrrrxDDD look to them

    • +12

No. Beats are expensive because of their advertising costs. Not because of the components going inside them

      • listen to the solo 2 and enjoy them.

        • Sure, just buy me a pair.

        • +1

@BrodenIt: you can try them at the Apple store

        • @beastwd:
          Alright, take me there.

        • +6

@BrodenIt: you can do that yourself.

        • @beastwd:
          No thanks

      • +2

        don't feed the troll

      • +3

To be fair, since Apple bought them, they've been getting pretty good reviews. Granted they're not cheap. But they're better than when Monster was making them. Just like AirPods, which don't have amazing audio quality, they offer a pretty good wireless experience, in terms of battery life and range. I personally use Xiaomi Hybrid Pro HDs, my only complaint about them is the remote buttons on them are bad. Just like my Piston 3s, the play/pause/answer call button sometimes gets stuck down or doesn't register double clicks.

        • After sales service from Apple has been great. I got water damage and wanted to get the board fixed and they replaced free of charge.

        • +2

@beastwd: Apple have really good customer service in general. I plugged my MacBook Pro into a mains power socket and a surge burnt out the logic board. Apple replaced it free, 2.4 years after I bought it. Additionally, since they actually have a store presence, you don't get stuck with sending it off to some random place at your expense like Samsung did when I had issues with an SSD.

        • @no not me: If I had products where the BOM was only 1/3rd of the retail cost, I too would have really, really good customer service.

        • +1

@luciferaust: Like Samsung, right? Come on, Samsung's other businesses supply almost everything you see in Samsung phones. Don't tell me they're not getting better prices than Apple on screens, batteries, RAM, CPU/CPU (SOC) fabrication, screen, etc., etc. Additionally, throw in costs of maintaining a team of engineers to write and keep an OS updated (iOS) where Samsung use Android, provided by Google.

Also, BOM doesn't account for R&D, nor does it account for 5 years worth of software updates completed in house and not largely done by another party, as is the case with Android devices, excluding Google's own.

  • +2

    Discrimination

  • Had a quick look and was a little confused by the offer - is it any of the headphones free, or up to a particular value? The Solo3 is twice the RRP as the BeatsX, so why wouldn't you aim for the Solo3?

Why would uni student need Macbook or Ipad Pro? What's wrong with using paper and pen? I don't get it.

    • +7

      A. You don't need to vie for a computer in the library to do assignments or study

      B. You can download lectures and their respective recordings to view offline

      C. You can type your notes alongside the lecture slides

      D. PDF (totally legitimate) copies of textbooks allows you to search them quickly, or access them without weighing your bag down

      E. Lecturers will laugh at you, then fail you if you submit handwritten content in 2018
