Or they'll have used their entire yearly budget in the first week of Jan and won't actually have any money to help people that actually need it. But as long as people's bosses and mothers in law get a kick out it

        • I'd imagine 11 mil of Gov funds would be quite a few condoms worth.

  • +18

It's disappointing to see this site being used to take resources away from charities. Surely there should be some guidelines to prevent this from happening. As many have said already "this isn't a deal - it's stealing from an initiative". From the comments it seems that many are using it as a method to joke about their homophobic views. A deal shouldn't be a platform for preaching hate or stealing resources away from a charity that you may not agree with.

  • +7

charity give away - no brodening

  • +5

Over 5000 clicks, I really hope only a minority of the OzB community who are not legible for the pack are exploiting this deal. The charity will be placed under additional pressure and this deal might jeopardise this initiative and future ones. It is not fair on them.

This initiative is targeted at individuals who are in a high risk category and for that reason I don't believe it should be presented to the wider public particularly when there is a risk for exploitation. I also don't believe a caveat is sufficient to prevent exploitation and this deal causes damages to vulnerable individuals at the expense of what is probably greed or a joke. The damage might have already been done.

Maybe someone from the OzB upper echelons can contact the organisation and proactively ask if they wish for the deal to be taken down.

  • +8

Agreed that this shouldn't be a deal on this website due to the high risk of wasting a charity's time and money (as shown by earlier comments suggesting exploitation).

Perhaps in this case of an influx of interest, ACON may want to seek confirmation via email before sending samples and have the chance to explain that they are indeed a charity…

Also we could add ACON to the next charity donation thread that regularly happens on ozbargain.

  • may i suggest adding dams for your next pack.

  • +13

Disappointing to see this is still active. Should we anticipate food bank 'deals' next - sure, they're targeted towards a disadvantaged section of the community, but free food is free food, right!?. Same scenario applies here

  • +9

Take this down - same as others.

  • Our community is made up of people of all races, rich, poor and those of varying sexual orientation. We have made clear in the title and description of the deal that this is meant for those members. Similar to this deal where we made the same point. We will continue to follow the discussions on this deal and seek feedback from the community.

    Reminders:

    • +2

Does this mean that posting ‘freebies’ from charities are legitimate deals, even though there’s the real risk that they will get completely OzBargained by people they’re not intended for (as is the case here)?

      • +1

I think judging by Neil's comment above the answer is clearly YES

Perhaps if the charity involved wants to stop being ozbargained they can contact OzBargain and request removal.

The reality is the NSW taxpayer is bankrolling this - the charity will simply receive more funding, the taxpayer will foot the bill, and the charity CEO will give themselves a fat pay rise and tell themselves what a good job they are doing.

      • We don't have any guidelines for freebies. A freebie is a freebie. However its an interesting discussion and one that I think you should perhaps would like to start a discussion in the site feedback forum. Most guidelines were created and change based on feedback from the community.

        • +5

I used the TWAM forum before because I thought that would be more appropriate. I just think you (the OzBargain moderators) need to consider the impact the deal being posted on the site will have on the charity. You need to take more responsibility for the negative impact this will have, not just on ACON for this deal, but others when (inevitably) another charity’s ‘freebie’ is posted again.

        • @ihavecentsnotsense:

As you feel strongly about this, I suggest you start a thread in the site discussion forum so perhaps we can gain community feedback and create guidelines that can be applied uniformly (we can't just pick and choose what deals we want removed).

        • +4

@neil: sure, I will. Although I think there’s already been robust discussion in the comments in this deal that you shouldn’t ignore. Not sure why it’s necessary to rehash in the site discussion forum, as it’s pretty clear what people’s views are from these comments.

        • @ihavecentsnotsense:

Thank you for creating a thread.

I have some things to do today but I'll see if I can find some previous charity freebies to add to that discussion.

    • Deal description contains orgies and gloves. But that's ok?

  • Well done TA. A very intriguing deal. Certainly drew the commenters out! And I don’t see any suggestion in the deal that people fudge their eligibility.

  • why are these people more prone to hiv than other people?

    • +4
      • Anal sex causes micro-tears on the tissues of the rectal wall, resulting in easier infection for viral particles. Men who have sex with men have anal sex at higher rates than other demographics, as I'm sure you're aware.

      • As MSM don't have to worry about pregnancy, condom use is lower.

      • The MSM population is smaller than the heterosexual population. Think of it like rumours in a smaller town - because there's fewer people, information spreads easier, and each person "in the know" is a greater percentage of the population with the rumour than in a larger city. Same concept.

      • the grim reaper was first aired in 1987. what has changed since then that makes people not think that not using a condom is smart?

        • +4
          • HIV isn't as much of a death sentence anymore, therefore people are more casual about the possibility of contracting it.

          • Younger people weren't exposed to the original epidemic (or that ad), and may not know about it as much, or be as concerned. It's all theoretical to them, and, as people do, they adopt the "it won't happen to me" mindset.

          • People often become reckless in the heat of the moment.

          • People are stupid and selfish, and don't care at all.

Mostly points 3 and 4. People don't like condoms. They don't feel as good, they're not sexy for either partner. So people go without.

      • -3

"Anal sex causes micro-tears on the tissues of the rectal wall"

Stop shoving things up there would help.

        • +5

No one asked for, wants, or needs your opinion. If you don't want to engage in anal sex, you're perfectly entitled not to. Would be pretty hard to anyway, what with your head already being in the way.

        • @ProspectiveDarkness:

"No one asked for, wants, or needs your opinion"

Ah, the joys of a public forum.

"If you don't want to engage in anal sex, you're perfectly entitled not to. Would be pretty hard to anyway, what with your head already being in the way."

Seems like I hit a nerve. Anyway it's like someone telling you not to play with fire or else you may get burned. You have to choice to do it, or not to do it. But if you continue to do it and get burned, you're not going to get much sympathy.

  • Hopefully, if some later need help from any charity that offer "freebies", those charities are able to help. Or will they be turned away because their freebie was ozbargained at an earlier date?

  • What if you are a hetero who cannot afford condoms? I know GPs are bulkbilled but never seen free condoms in the clinic.

    • There are a few places that give out free condoms, where are you situated?

    • +1

If you're serious, you'll find free condoms at nearly any sexual health clinic. Go get em ;-)

      • you'll find free condoms at nearly any sexual health clinic. Go get em

what's the difference between getting free condoms from this deal and sexual health clinic?

        • POSTAGE AND HANDLING

        • @stormii:
          so $2 difference per pack?

      • +2

Just a hypothetical question, not into condoms anymore at this time of my life :) And I am not even in NSW. But during my younger years, this would have been extremely helpful for me, not just for snatching the freebie but also because it allows for discretion, so having to do away with the weirdness of picking them up from the grocery aisle, or the awkward conversation with health professionals about one’s sex life.

        • +1

There was a time when these were unavailable at supermarkets. Nowadays, embarrassed shoppers can utilise self-serve checkouts.

    • -1

Be quiet. LGBTI are more equal than you.

  • +8

This is for an at risk group. Not a free thing no targeted people should take advantage of

  • +1

    [At Risk LBGTI ONLY]

This is for high risk individuals with a penis. So we can safely remove the L from this heading.

    • +1

Pretty sure some lesbians have penises.

    • +1

Geese neged for stating a fact. Lesbians have the lowest risk (of hiv) of any sexually active group in the community, this isn't targeted at them.

  • +3

This is an initiative, not a deal.

    • Not so sure about that, free condoms and gloves seems like a pretty good deal to me.

      • +4

        Username checks out

        • +3

          I worry about Scab..
I worry what he's going to be like when he reaches puberty….

        • +1

@Wystri Warrick: He looks younger without the Christmas hat.

        • +2

          @Wystri Warrick:

I worry what he's going to be like when he reaches puberty

Not far off now, found my first pubic hair the other day.

  • What's this crap doing on Ozbargain? And why is it NSW only? Doesn't belong here at all.

For women… bloodplay? I am scared.

  • +5

This should not have been posted and/or left up, especially under 'Freebies'. Argue all you want, but surely it is reasonable from a risk-based perspective that it has bound to have been exploited by those who are not the target audience of this initiative. Distasteful.

    • +7

And despite the fervent opposition to this deal as seen in the comment section and separate forum poll here (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354078), this 'deal' STILL remains published.

It's clear it isn't going to be removed unless a take down request is instigated by the affected charity, unfortunately.

      • +8

I noted that and took it upon myself to contact them here about it: https://www.acon.org.au/about-acon/contact/#contact-like-sub…
Feel free to do the same. It's shameful that as a charity, they will most likely now have to devote resources to deal with this, which detracts from the time they could have spent on charitable activities (because, unbeknownst to some, let me remind that they are a charity and charities often if not always have target audiences).

      • this freebie have a ~69% approval rating.

        • +2

A substantial 80%+ of votes on the forum thread are in favour of 'deals' such as this being removed/banned.

The community has well and truly spoken.

        • @WJD21:

it's now up to the moderators to decide.

      • Then of course my neg gets revoked.

  • -1

Wow!!! I see that moderator(s) are trying to shape the views of the community on this bargain. My comment got unpublished and my negative vote cancelled for saying that TightArse stooped too low with this so called deal? It is interesting to see that ratio of voted on this deal 155+ vs 48- is exactly opposite to the poll on the same topic https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/354078 with 41 "yays" and 168 "nays" for deals that may negatively affect charities.

If I were cynical I would say somebody should be summoned for forgetting to implement option to moderate polls (how hard is to add few votes here take few votes there). Censorship is not cool. This deal is not cool. Or as kids would say this is gay, revoking my vote is gay, censorship is gay, political correctness going mad is gay, suppressing opinions of the community is gay.

And while understanding that OzBargain, although a public resource, is a privately owned business that can set their own rules of what is allowed and what not, if this censorship madness continues I do not want to be part of it. Yes, I'm ban baiting you mods!

    • You can deactivate your account yourself, you don't have to wait for the mods to do it.
Just go to your account settings & you will see it at the bottom of the page.

    • +1

Your comment would have been denied under the voting guidelines, not the moderators censoring your opinion.

Simply saying an OP "stooped too low" is not a valid negative vote.

      Inappropriate uses of negative vote

Any negative vote that falls into any of these reasons will be revoked by a moderator. Negative votes for any other reason will not be removed by a moderator.

      No explanation of the vote

“Weird looking website” (Nothing to do with the deal)

You negged as a hit to the OP, not in regards to the deal.

      • No censorship??? Please explain exactly opposite vote counts and the poll I mentioned? As I said seems somebody forgot to allow "moderation" of poll votes.

        • +2

Polls take a second to click, commenting and voting takes much longer. The poll allows people to just show their opinion in a second whereby a deal is much different.

You complained that your negative vote was removed, that's all I was replying to.

  • +4

Way to go, ozbargainers. You took what started off as a fun thread and turned it into the outrage of the century.

    • +4

The latest trend is to be triggered and be outraged at everything.

I'm getting outraged by the outrage.

  • Now they are discriminating normal sexual orientation? Or they are discriminating LGBTI because they are more prone to be infected by STD?
    I am confused.

BTW, from memory the LGBTI list should be way longer?

    • They want LGBTI… to be the new normal. It won't ever be. Ironic that they're giving HIV prevention to people who have the highest risk of HIV because of their own activities.

  • +5

This is a charity trying to help people who need it - not a 'deal' for anyone to exploit.
I'm disgusted by anyone not in the target group who orders. Have some dignity.

    • Have some dignity.

You pretty much lose all dignity when you wear condoms and gloves.

  • +6

This is exploiting a charity. Not a bargain.

  • +3

Charity resources / government funding getting ozbargined

    • +6

      Charity resources

Maybe the OP wasn't originally aware it was a charity and their post was edited accordingly, stop whining the same thing over and over or better yet start posting some deals yourself.

And it was more a jovial post, but unfortunately the triggered and righteous have no sense of humour.

      government funding getting ozbargined

So what, other government-funded things have been Ozbargained.

      Here's a sample.

  • +4

A freebie from a charity is poor form.

    • +3

You do realise that the charity created the freebie?

      • +1

Which is intended for a specific group as explicitly stated on the linked page. Exploiting this, as many have seemingly done, is poor form.

        • +4

Yes I know, it says that in the deal description now. Mods added it, as the Op most likely wasn't aware at the time of posting that it was a charity.

        • -1

It insinuates exactly that (it's a charity organisation) on the websites footer.

        • +4

@WJD21: Yes I know, which would be very easy to miss when posting a deal.

        • -1

Perhaps we could hear from the OP, who has been glaringly absent throughout the discussion…

        • +2

Probably because it's pointless, haters gonna hate.
They'll just call him a liar no matter what he says.

        • +3

@WJD21: OP is very likely compiling more deals for us.

        • +1

Yes but how dare he have an oversight like this on his 3151st post in 8 years.

        • +5

@WJD21: With all of the hate going on here, who could blame him? I get discouraged if I post a deal and I get a couple of negatives. Posters don't own the deal, they are just putting them out there, and take it or leave it. If TA gets discouraged from posting deals, then it will be a VERY great loss to OzB. He is a very big contributor. Just have a look at his statistics and compare them to yours! Maybe he didn't sit around for days and days considering the pro s and cons before posting. Maybe he wouldnt have posted had he had the benefit of all the opinions herein before posting. Get off his case will ya?

        • +5

          @WJD21: And the hate continues!

        • -2

          My hypothesis all but confirmed

      • +3

I certainly realise that, but with over 6000 clicks as I type this, somehow I doubt the charity expected to be exploited by so many here in the ozbargain community (my assumption only). I'm glad the post had since been edited to make things a little clearer at least, but it seems too late. Hopefully those that need it, get it.

  • +2

Update 8 Jan 2018 9:00am : Take-down request received from ACON to remove link to Claude

    And the decision is?

    • It was taken down. Link removed and changed to the thread.

      • I've never seen this happen before, why not just delete the post?
Do the mods think we are that dumb that we can't find the link?

        • +2

Lol I think it’s to keep the discussion public but the deal not, obviously you can go to revisions but this is the best way to deal with it apparently to keep the previous discussion viewable.

  • -1

How come this hasn't been moved to the forums?

    • Because it's an expired deal.

  • Anyone received their pack yet? Ordered it on 6.01.18
