Broadlink RM Mini3 Wi-Fi / IR Remote Control US $11.99 (~AU $16) EXPIRED

I've been doing a bit of Homebridge and this is the next step. An IR blaster gives me control over the home entertainment stuff, but also the ceiling fans.

I got jealous of everyone reaching out to the reps for a good deal and finally gave it a try myself. Gearbest delivers as always!

Xiaomi Xiaofang Smart 1080P WiFi IP Camera USD $12.99 (~AUD $17.03) Delivered @ Gearbest

Not the best price ever listed on ozbargain, but I'm going on a Gearbest spree and every bit helps!

Planning to use this for more Homebridge automation as well as some doorbell face detection experiments.

Has the Gearbest rep addressed the issues with the cameras yet?

    • +1

      @Gearbest rep,
Would be nice to know if the cameras are region locked to China as of recent versions or…?

  • What issue is there with the xiaofang cameras?
I ordered one earlier today with the same code supplied by the rep on here.

Broadlink mmmm. Just need to think of a good reason to get one 😱
The Mrs already hates I can change the TV channels with Fetch TV app when I am not at home 🙄

    • +3

Believe the issue with the cameras is that some of the new ones are region locked to China - even if you change the app to say you're in China it won't work from an Aussie IP address.

Broadlink: Get one to control your air con remotely - turn it on remotely as you leave work or woteva so your house is nice and cool when you get home.

      • Our 10yo ducted aircond does not have ir control. Daikin dealer wanted $big$ to upgrade to Wi-Fi controller.

Cant activate or operate xaiofang without internet connection?
I was looking to use it with my 3d printer so I could see it from my lounge room.

        • +3

Why not just put your 3D Printer in the lounge and watch it real time with no delay

        • +7

@asa79: I suspect that his 3D printer might be region locked to his study.

        • +1

          Bugger about the AC!

The camera can be hacked to work without the cloud app - check https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks, this will let you watch it via a RTSP feed (using VLC or similar) rather than the Mi Home app which is I believe what locks you out of using the camera outside of China.

        • @asa79: Most 3d printers are somewhat noisy and depending on what you're printing with they can give off a fair amount of heat and fumes (effectively they're melting plastic to print, doesn't smell quite as strong as burning plastic, but can be unpleasant anyway).

        • @WazzaP: I have read about fang hacks previously and would be installing.

Not much need for IR these days as I can already control TV and Fetch Mighty via Wifi.

        • @WazzaP: only printing PLA at the moment so no fumes. Yes it is quite noisy.
Funny thing is that I also purchased my 3d printer from Gearbest 😁

      • the issue with the cameras is that some of the new ones are region locked to China - even if you change the app to say you're in China it won't work from an Aussie IP address.

I heard about this and am surprised why this camera gets advertised to Australia market. A hack solution to overcome the issue is simply not good enough IMHO. Many people that bought this may not be technology savvy.

        • +5

@tempura it's not officially marketed to the Australian market. It's more the case that Gearbest and other similar retailers sell products online and are happy to ship to Australia if asked to do so.

Man I am glad I read these comments, I have 2 cameras at home that I haven't been able to get to connect. I've spent hours trying different things, I thought I was missing something, its been driving me insane.

      • Just received a new one from ebay, disappointed that it can no longer be used outside of China via the official app. Existing one is still working fine.

    • Siri's "good night" command turns off everything I've got set up in Homebridge, so it's a way of turning off any TVs or ceiling fans left on, but also turning the fans on remotely, or based on temperature events (haven't bought the sensors yet). For example, if it gets over 25 inside, turn on ceiling fans @ 50%. If it gets over 27 turn to 100%.

You will need to hack this camera to get it to work in Australia. I got one 2 days ago and have only now got it to work.

First rule : DO NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE!
Second rule: DO NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE!

As you can see I upgraded the firmware and it took me a long time to degrade the firmware.

You will need to download this: https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks/releases/download/0.2.0…

      And download this: https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/

Then you need to download the xiaomi mi home app onto your phone. You use the app to connect the camera to the wifi. After that you use win32 disk imager to load the fanghacks image onto a microsd card you have formatted to FAT32.

Then you insert the sd card into the device when it is turned on and connected to wifi which will setup some software you can activate using a web browser connected to the wifi.

All the info can be found here: https://github.com/samtap/fang-hacks

      Good luck!

So I've got 2 Xiaofangs, 1 of them I've set up early last year and have never updated the firmware (version 2.9.0.7). I set the second one (version 3.0.3.56) up last week and got it all working with Mi Home version 5.0.29 with the locale set to "Mainland China". I just came back from holiday and plugged in the second one again as it was unplugged while I was away. Now it won't let me view it saying "Use only in mainland China. This product is only used in mainland China". I have no idea how this happened as I didn't update the firmware nor the app. The first one still works all good. Now what's interesting is that I can actually view the feed on the 2nd camera if I swipe right into the "Mi smart camera" tab and press play on the feed (yes I can view both streams at the same time). I can also full screen it from there. But yeah I can't get into the camera if I click on it from the main home page.

So I'm guessing I have to downgrade the firmware on the 2nd camera now? Even though it was working all fine on the firmware it shipped with. I tried resetting the 2nd camera and re-adding it on the app but no go. Also, on iOS, both cameras don't work at all now lol.

The thing is though, I don't really care for the fanghacks. I don't mind using the Mi Home app.

        • +1

My issue was that it wouldn’t let me use the app - after upgrading and then downgrading the firmware it still wouldn’t let me use it as they intended. Besides, I’n happy having it on a secure network and not broadcasting to the net.

Looking at the Broadlink.. Not much of a discount (?)

I have this camera close to a year. It worked perfectly before I upgraded the app.

    • I bought the camera a year or so ago, but have never used it because:
1- I refuse to give the app the permissions it wants (ie every possible permission) &
2- haven't had the energy to apply the hack, since I can see it soaking up the hours

      • Not really hours, more like minutes

        Download SD image of hack
        Write SD image to card
        Insert SD card in camera
Open browser and navigate to IP of camera
        Click activate hack

Enjoy your camera locally. You do need to use the app initially to put the Wifi details on the camera. Just don't update the camera.

        • If you don’t mind me asking, if you use he hack, is there much needed to connect it online to access remotely?

I don’t mind using the app (in fact would prefer for motion detection), but getting quite frustrated with it. If I can get it working fairly easy and online via the hacks, may head down that route.

        • @tomsco: it is not recommended to open it up to the outside world as it is not secure and anyone can watch your stream. If that doesn't bother you it's as simple as opening the rstp port on your router

        • where is the hack!?

  • How do you control the ceiling fans with IR? Most ceiling fans with remotes are RF?

    • I think, and I may be wrong, that ours are IR. But they're also cooked so I'll be replacing them in the next few weeks. Not sure if it's Xiaomi or Broadlink, but one of them has an IR+RF double.

      • +2

Broadlink RM Mini 3 (Black Bean) is IR only, the triangle looking one, RM Pro, does RF as well. That said, plenty of fans are IR only.

        • +1

Thanks so triangle would be better to get
