How Often Do You Shower?

Was chatting at work, and apparently some shower once every two days, some every day, some twice a day. One young bloke longest streak was 6 days he said, he realised it was too long when he got pimples on his back.

I'm interested in your longest streak, but more interested in ozbargainers habit.

Edit:
Perhaps interesting to note that Steve Jobs used to shower only once a day. He was so stinky that nobody wants to work with him, so he works at night.

      • Depending on if they’re the one uh, receiving fluids or giving them I think it’s at times better to shower after.

        • If you're not clean going in, it'll be unpleasant for your partner.

  • When it rain, I'm real bargainer I use the free nature water.

A quick cold one in the morning and a warm 5 minute shower before bed.

    • Same here

      • Have you heard about contrasting shower?

  • +2

Thread is restoring my faith in Ozbargainers after that dreadful handwashing thread.

    • +1

Wait till you overlay the responses from that thread with this, and you’d probably find that those who shower might not wash their hand after toilet usage.

  • I shower at least once a day. Every morning when I wake up.
I shower after going to the gym too, so 3 times a week I shower at least twice.
If I have gotten sweaty during the day or need to cool off before bed I'll shower again, typically a colder shower with a beer in hand.
So some days up to 3 times.

  • At the moment… I feel like moving my bed into the bathroom, it is soooo hot here.

    • Lol, sometimes I wish bathtub are so soft it can be used as a spare bed.

  • +3

To all the people that don't shower at least daily - the other people on the packed Sydney trains without air-conditioning really appreciate it 😐

  • Once a day in the mornings.

Will have another shower after the work out or before bed if I've been to the gym that day.

  • From a hygiene perspective it worries me that some people aren't showering daily - like seriously why wouldn't you if it's available to you? gross.

Also when you sleep you shed skin and hair and sweat (even in cold climates) - I don't wake up properly until I've had a shower in the morning either.

    • -1

Getting out of a warm shower into 16 degrees indoor temperature while wet - unpleasant

  • Once a day at night. Sometimes twice a day if I go for a run or to the gym at lunch and feel I need another one by the end of the night.

  • once every 1-2 days depends on the weather and daily activity too

  • Twice a day

  • +1

Daily @ night, waay to lazy in the mornings

  • Minimum twice a day for me, once after dinner and one in the morning. Another one in between after working out or doing some work around the house.

To those that doesn't shower before going to bed, how do you keep your sheets clean and how often do you wash them?

  • During Summer, I try to have shower once a day and change into new clothes and use deodorant. During Winter, sometimes once every 3 days.
I always use soap and shampoo every time I shower. I'm surprised some people here sometimes have shower without applying soap. I mean, you're already wet, what's so hard about cleaning yourself with soap…you know..finish the job? LOL

  • I think having a shower a couple of times a week is ok provided you wash your pits and bits on a daily basis.

    • +3

Things is the most efficient way to properly wash your pits and bits is to… Have a quick shower.

  • Twice a day.

In the morning and then in the evening around 7PM after hitting the gym.

There has been research done saying that showering daily removes flora that is beneficial to us. They did a human trial where people were given a product (I think it was a spray) with but no showers,

The results where overwhelming supportive of the hypothesis and people felt much better too and even got rid of minor skin irritations etc too. The team also checked body odour levels and there was no issue. Apparently that is one of the jobs the flora takes care of.

    • I know people who don't use soap because they say it gives them bad BO. They just wash with plain water.

      • I don't use soap or shower gel unless I applied lots of sunscreen on my skin and need to wash it off. Soap and shower gels strip too much oil off my skin and makes my skin dry and itchy, especially in winter.

I shower once a day at night with no BO issues. I think genetics and diet are both big factors.

        • Honestly it sounds like you’re using cheap soap and shower gel. I used to have this problem, someone bought me some expensive shower gel from lush and I don’t have this problem anymore. Soap from anywhere still dries my skin out majorly but more expensive shower gels with oils in them actually make my skin better.

        • @Beansbeansbeans:

Thanks for your suggestion. Haven't tried Lush, but I have sensitive skin and have used QV and Dove which are meant to be gentle and moisturising but I still get the dryness. Maybe I'll give my friends a hint when my birthday comes up

      • I noticed a while back if I wash my pits, within 12-18hrs or if I sweat I stink a bit.

When I didn't… ala when i was young and lazy, I rarely got BO

Gone back to not washing pits, rarely get BO

  • Additionally i have not useD traditional detergent shampoos since August last year. It is quicker too - 1 product - 1 application. My hair is much happier!

  • +3

Before sex… sometimes during sex… and often after sex

Needless to say… after kids I am having a LOT less showers….

  • 1-2 times a day, depends if dirty from work but definitely after training without fail.

  • +1

Someone has too much time on their hands

When i was 17 I went without shower for almost 4 months. These days I shower twice a week and i am proud of it.

    • +1

Are you one of those smelly ones on public transport???! :)

  • Once a day in the evenings, sometimes twice a day in summer. I can't fathom the people who skip shower days. I can just picture the nasty smells under the arms and between the legs (shudders). Just because you can't smell yourself doesn't mean the bacteria ain't thriving off your sweat, oils and dead skin.

  • have a bath daily in the evening shower at night

  • Twice a day on average, morning and night. Clean in the morning and also clean before bed.

If I'm playing sport or exercise during the day, I shower afterwards. On occasion if it is a hot day and I feel sticky, I shower again.

  • +2

    Golden shower before breakfast

  • Completely depends.

If I'm working that day, I'll shower before shift, and then again after.
If I'm going out to socialise, I'll shower before I go out, but not after.
On off days, it's just on a 'do I need to have/feel like a shower?' basis.
If someone is coming over, I'll have a shower before hand too.

I guess it's just when I feel the need to, and when I'm expected to.

I always wash my face with face wash and water every morning though, regardless of having a shower or not. I don't feel 'awake' unless I do that.

To all the people that don't take shower in the morning before going out, don't you get an unpleasant feeling changing into your clean undies/clothes having not showered? I absolutely hate that feeling.

    • +2

You change into clean undies? LUXURY! ;-)

    • clothes usually get about 3-4 days wear before washing, clean undies almost every day though.

    • Don't you get an unpleasant feeling getting into your clean bed having not showered? I change sheets regularly and get into bed clean so I can't stand the thought of soiling my bed by getting in it dirty!

      • Agreed! I generally take my 'outside' clothes off and shower as soon as I get home and change into clean lounge clothes before I sit down anywhere, because I take public transport and god knows how dirty those seats are!

  • +1

I wonder how many people who shower daily don't wash their hands after using the toilet.

I also bet there are people here lying about how often they shower, or refraining from commenting for fear of ridicule.

Would also be interested in how long these showers last. Do people trade off frequency for duration?

Has anyone even mentioned "dry showers"? Complete change of clothes with a big spray of deodorant all over in between?

Also be aware that daily showering is actually a relatively modern habit. Be glad you have the luxury. Only the last few generations have. Daily showering and bathing started with dirty professions, not office workers.

    • Hang on - you wash your hands AFTER doing your business? Isn't it too late because you have exposed your private parts to germs from your dirty hands?
I wash my hands BEFORE and AFTER touching my private parts to keep them clean.

      • I wash before if my hands are dirty. Washing beforehand as regular practice isn't common from what I've seen in men's rooms.

    • My grandparents are immigrants and grew up without access to private showers. They used to go to a public bathhouse once a week (or two in winter) to wash their hair but washed their bits daily with a bucket of water. This was why bidets were popular in some countries even after showers were widely available in houses.

  • +2

Me - 1-2 times per day. But I have a friend who showers once every "three or four days", despite the fact that she does hot yoga every damn day before work. It's a commonly known/discussed fact at work, and yet everyone agrees - she doesn't seem to smell at all! I don't understand how she does it, but maybe some people just don't sweat or get B.O. like the rest of us?

    • +4

Some people just have good skin bacteria. Sweat on its own has barely any scent, it only smells after the bacteria on our skin and in our armpits processes it and spits out nasty smelling chemicals.

      • +2

Some people allow their good skin bacteria to grow. Instead of washing it away everyday, before it ever has a chance to take over from the nasty odor producing bacteria which love to invade freshly washed skin.

  • +1

I will shower when Tibet is free!!!

  • My experiments have lead me to believe that optimal bathing hygiene consists of:
    - defecation in the morning prior to going to work
    - a shower immediately following defecation to avoid build up of odour causing bacteria
    - every so often applying hand sanitiser to the area between your legs and the intergluteal cleft (again to prevent build up of odour causing bacteria. If only applied infrequently it doesn't cause skin irritation)
    - apply hand sanitiser to arm pits if odours aren't removed by showering
    - showering at least once a day, more if I've exercised or sweated too much
    - always use deodorant
    - keep armpit hair short to increase effectiveness of deodorant

If you've got normal daily bowel movements, you need to be showering. Simple as that. If you don't, you probably are emitting some level of odour. I don't buy what some people are saying that they don't need to shower daily.

I think it's just courteous to others to know your body and keep it as clean as it needs to be (not everybody builds up odours as quickly as each other). People who smell just piss me off for being so inconsiderate. Wash your clothes and shower as often as you defecate.

    • +1

defecation in the morning prior to going to work

You're doing it wrong. Nothing like taking a crap in company time lol

Has anyone watch The Book of Eli and use KFC wet wipes to clean your body?

    • I did, the guy said finger lickn good.

  • +1

If you're showering every day, you're probably over doing it. In fact, showering too often can dry out and irritate skin, wash away the good bacteria that naturally exists on your skin, and introduce small cracks that put you at a higher risk of infection.

Daily showers are common due to societal norms more than any legitimate health need. We associate being freshly showered with being attractive and pleasing, so we tend towards showering often to feel better. However, for strictly hygienic reasons, showering as little as one or two times a week could be sufficient, depending on your lifestyle.

According to Dr. Joshua Zeichner, assistant professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, how frequently we shower and what we perceive as body odor is "really more of a cultural phenomenon." Boston dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch echoes this sentiment. "We overbathe in this country and that's really important to realize," she says. "A lot of the reason we do it is because of societal norms."

So what's the ideal shower frequency? In terms of your health — not how you look or smell — probably once or twice a week, [professor of dermatology, Dr. C. Brandon Mitchell] says. "Your body is naturally a well-oiled machine," he says. "A daily shower isn't necessary."

"I tell patients who shower daily not to lather their whole bodies," Mitchell says. Hit your pits, butt and groin, which are the areas that produce strong-smelling secretions. The rest of your body doesn't need much soaping, he says.

Too much time spent under the hot water, lathering and scrubbing can dry out your skin, cause cracks that can lead to infections or germs getting into your skin, and strips your skin of its natural oils that help keep it healthy. So, even if you're aiming to be your most presentable, be sure to keep it moderate to avoid hurting your skin in the long run.

What you've quoted is essentially saying: you can shower daily, but don't soap and scrub your whole body, just armpits and the between legs region for odour control. Which is probably what most people are doing anyway.

      • +1

        "A daily shower isn't necessary."

        • I don't dispute that he said it's not necessary. But then he goes on to say that for those that do shower daily, he's not saying to them "don't do it", he's saying limit the amount of soap and the areas you wash with soap.

    • +1

That's no excuse for not taking showers daily! I take showers twice a day, sometimes thrice in summer! I use body cream to maintain moist on my dry skin and avoid using el cheapo soaps which are harsh on skins. I use 4 kind of soaps during showers - face soap, body soap, private parts soap and shampoo - and I don't consider this to be a bare minimum of hygiene for any person who claims to be a "civilised human".

      • What's the difference between your face soap and private parts soap? Are they both just sensitive skin soaps?

      • I take showers twice a day, sometimes thrice in summer! I use body cream to maintain moist on my dry skin and avoid using el cheapo soaps which are harsh on skins. I use 4 kind of soaps during showers

But you still end up looking like a demon? =p

    • Seems like a waste of time bringing this up with people on this forum, wouldn't care if a doctor told them to their face this was the case, even if it was genuinely making them ill. I can only imagine the cringe of any doctors especially dermatologists reading this thread, I know I am (though not a dermatologist have dealt with skin issues and know showering so often is a bad idea). If you really have to shower as mentioned doing so quickly, and with specific types of soap etc. can limit the damage. Regardless though I've found basically all soaps can be bad for those with sensitive skin even considering what it says on the packet, including overpriced Lush products as someone else in this thread mentioned.

  • I shower once a day, normally in the morning before work. Sometimes I wash in the morning and at night (at night I wash my hair).

  • Depending on what work I am doing but normally shower before bed, wash face hands and spray in morning if going on sight, shower if going to office but I can honestly say I have not had a bath for 16 years.

  • +2

ppl who dont shower at least daily, how do u deal with all the #2's in ur but. tp doesnt get all of it.

    • do you shower after every dump? who has time for like 5 showers a day?

      • You take a dump 5 times a day?

        • isn't that the human average?

        • @wordplay: a quick google shows quiet a number of articles with the consensus of 1 to 3 times a day being the average.

        • @wordplay:

You need to see a doctor mate!

Seriously, which is worse? Shower once or twice a day if you shit 5 times a day or no shower even if you shit 5 times a day? What I am trying to say if you really shit 5 times a day (btw, see a doctor) it is probably better to have one shower than none at all.

        • +1

          @xoom:
But he may be driving an AMG. The weight savings from taking a dump before every ride would see significant power to weight difference, hence affecting acceleration, top speed and agility.

Some will even argue that the car actually becomes more powerful, perhaps even taking the AMG to Brabus levels.

        • @ganymede:
doctor has never asked how many times i go to the dunny, dont think i will make a special appointment either.
I will get him to say i am normal in that regard next time i go there, surely most people do around 5 a day i see people going into the bathrooms at work all the time, not just all to urinate surely.

      • +1

Who dumps it out 5 times a day damn son that cray

        • -1

thats the average for an adult.

        • @wordplay: really? i just do one super efficient one every morning. maybe a follow up one shortly after my morning coffee. but never 5

        • @DiscoJango:
i'm also a 6 on the bristol chart so average there too.

        • @wordplay: these people that are dropping it like its hot 5 times a day

are these efficient, stress free, easy glide sessions

          or

5 grunting pumping sweating and heaving sessions

        • @DiscoJango:
I'm sure everyone is different, but for me its a mixture. a real battle in the mornings and then extremely easy throughout the day.
What is your super efficient bomb like? a huge deal that requires a plunger every morning? it must be unhealthy to keep it stored for so long.

      • if at home… yes

    • Depends what's left over and where. What's the demarcation point, the event horizon or where the gap start in your butt cheeks? I reckon if you can clean up to the event horizon you're all good, the rest gets sucked back in.

  • My extremely thick hair doesn't let me skip a morning shower. I wake up with crazy scientist hair and it will not go down with a simple brush or comb.
Night time also because it means I don't have to change sheets as often.

  • +1

Depends if I've been sodomized for the day!

  • I wish my partner would shower less often - perhaps one day in three. I like their scent.

    • You like the smell of ass? Okay..

      • No I don’t. Do you really smell that way if you don’t shower for 48 hours? Is it your lifestyle?

Edit: my comment sounded rude - but I didn’t mean it that way. I mean: do you work in a dirty hot envoinment? Or with animals?

        • +1

Why are you apologising? You just got told you like the smell of ass. That was a lot ruder than anything you said.

        • @syousef: I've realised that if you want to learn something from people on the internet you need to work at politeness. Most comments like zaidoun's above are just from young men who need forums to feel powerful. If you treat them well they usually come round :)

        • @AddNinja:

I've never seen a bully come good.

        • @syousef: cmon calling me a bully is a bit much… I was just havin a laugh

        • @AddNinja: young man trying to feel powerful? I think you're reading too much into what I said. It was just a joke for the purposes of my entertainment.

        • @zaidoun:

Well intentional or not it was trollish at the very least. She clearly didn't feel good about it.

In any case I hope we can all just move on given you've said it was intended as a laugh.

        • A serious response to your question is: there was no need to apologise because I was purposefully trying to mess with you, not maliciously, of course, more in a joking kind of way. Although I appreciate the gesture.

Anyway, I've detailed what I think ideal shower hygiene should be in a standalone comment. This is what works for me.

Without getting gross, I find that because one should be going to the bathroom daily (#2), that it only makes sense to wash that area with water and soap at least daily. Wiping with toilet paper and even spraying the area with water (using an in-toilet bidet, for example) is not enough. I believe that people who think that an odour won't develop are deluding themselves and might not be able to smell their own odour.

  • I would be interested in the correlation between showering and sheet changing.

I suspect the well showed change sheets less often….

    • Perhaps there's no correlation. But I think that the less well showered, because they're generally unhygienic and uncivilised, would be comfortable wallowing in their filthy bedsheets for longer and not changing them as frequently despite that filth.

If there's correlation, I think it would be between not showering and other anti social behaviours, eg littering.
