There's the Xiaomi Pro i7-8550U 16GB RAM in the search link, with 20% discount it comes to $1,384, but the question is whether import duty is applicable or not???

I msg the seller in the morning but no reply yet.

    • +1

      It's from China so yes.

      • +2

Maybe the seller could put a lower value on the parcel? I bought Xiaomi RN4X on Goldway AliExpress and they put the phones value as $19.

        • +1

I did ask, but no reply yet. I certainly hope they can. Would love to pull the trigger on that.

        • +1

Hey the seller just replied advising that "no additional customs or import charges for shipments to any parts of Australia as these are already factored into the product pricing."

I am confirming one more time wow this could really be a deal! The reason why I am apprehensive is because there are people who bought on Brodenit's post and reported that they got jabbed other duties on top of the GST, and that is just on the i5 8GB model which was supposed to be just under the 1K AUD value.

        • @sky blu: If you got a positive reply, please post this as a deal. Thanks!

        • @boohooimissout: I am still on the fence, because the dilemma here is that I would only have written confirmation (ebay messages) but the uncertainty is still there - who knows what'd happen at customs? How would they write the invoice? Unless at the particular price (pre-20% discount) they have factored everything in, including S&H and other transit costs - basically a "CIF" inclusive price, delivered to the buyer.

That is just my assumption at this stage. Let's see how the seller responds tomorrow. If it is confirmed I would personally pull the trigger for myself. To submit as a deal post I believe it would be successful as a lot of people are interested but if sh** hits the fan it'd be a waste of everyone's time (rejecting goods for refund/ pay extra for tax etc.)

        • @sky blu: I'm still interested to know though.
I haven't any experience in importing from overseas.
How does it work? Do we have to pick it up from the airport and pay tax?
What if we don't pick up?

        • @boohooimissout: From what I gather, for this particular listing, it'd be door to door.

But too early to confirm, please wait for my update.

    • The OS version on this device cannot be upgraded or flashed and any attempts to modify the default OS will void the warranty. As a wholesaler, we provide no software support, advice, or training regarding the operating system and software.

Is that pretty standard? I wonder if it is full of spyware and bloatware?

      • I didn't know about this before. It looks like a good excuse to decline warranty claim.

        • It's a weird one. Modify. Pretty vague. What if you run a windows update? Or add more apps? Does that count as modify? I wonder if you could create a clone of the OS when you first receive it and re-install if a warranty issue ever arose?

        • @subywagon: That's a good idea (ie. clone)

      • That's pretty damn weird. I'd be avoiding the laptop based on that alone.

Skip the Xiaomi junk and get a ThinkPad. Lenovo is happy for you to basically do what you want with the laptop (even pulling it apart and upgrading components). You can do what you want and the warranty stays intact.

        • Yeah but I have to wait at least 1 more month for the T580, and it won't be less than $1,600.

        • @sky blu:

I generally keep a laptop for around 5 years.

Waiting a bit longer and spending a bit extra really doesn't worry me when it's something I'm going to be using on a daily basis for 6% of my expected life span.

        • @marlor: Thanks. Good opinion 👍

        • @sky blu:

How'd you go? Did you end up buying?

    • Also which gpu is better between these two?

      • +1

MX150 blows the AMD Radeon RX550 out of the water.

Also anyone buying this I'd assume is prepared to install their own Windows. Let's see how the seller responds first.

  • Too fat @ 1.75kg…..:(

    • +4

You must be skinny as hell.

    • +6

Well do you even lift, bro?

      • +3

If he buys that laptop he will…

      • +1

As a matter of fact I hit the gym 5 days a week, and that's why I hate fat stuff.

        Does that answer your question?

        • It was rhetorical…

    • I was afraid that it'll be too heavy based on the numbers but it doesn't feel heavy at all.
Feels very compact and doesn't strain my back at all when I carry it in my backpack.
Maybe I was used too carrying my 2.7kg asus n56vz along with its 600g charger

Good price. Just we careful not to burn your lap. Seems the GPU can get a bit toasty.

    • I like toast…

      • +1

        I'll toast to that

          Bloody Ray Puchase.

        • I like muffins more… Can I be a muffin instead?…

    • +2

They do get super toasty in games but in normal productivity you shouldn't feel any heat since its mostly the browser using the integrated gpu. If you're gaming/editing, you're probably on a desk.

  • Is 1.8ghz a bit slow? Does it boost? 8mb cache is great though.

    • Here is a comparison between the new quad-core 8th gen i7-8550U vs the typical gaming quad-core i7-7700HQ:
      http://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-8550U-vs-…

You can see the new 8th gen mobile CPU matches that of the performance quad-core CPU. 1.8GHz means it is less power-hungry, and with turbo boost to 3.6 GHz on average it delivers more power when required.

This is a great machine at this price-point. I bought this for my sister. For me, I'd prefer 15" laptops with numpad. My last one was the Thinkpad T560.
