    Cool little machines!

There's a scratch and dent one on the Dell Outlet for $199 if anyone doesn't care about a few marks..

    • +1

Bought a Scratch n Dent a couple of weeks ago (a Latitude). Couldn't see the scratch or dent anywhere…either way $199 (risk of it not looking 100%) or $299 is brilliant value.

      • I wonder if it's luck of the draw because there seem to be huge discounts for s&d on some models. Very tempted.

      • Link?

    • The one you got from the dell outlet, was it a dual processor or quad ?

  • I hope they give these a minor update and keep them at the same price. Looking forward to seeing an 8th gen variant with the same specs. Great little units for the price.

  • Anyone had any problems with the screen cracking? My son’s cracked with no obvious marks, dents or mistreatment. Best guess is text books pushing against it in his backpack.

    • I own three, all used by kids at school and none have a cracked screen. One has a cracked screen surround, another is missing case screws after a year of use.

One thing to note is that the screens scratch easily from kid's finger nails.

I own four of these, used by my kids for school & uni, and by myself when travelling. The oldest one was used by my son at school for more than a year and then it developed a cracked screen. There was no identifiable incident which broke it; perhaps it was the textbooks in the backpack. It was still usable at first but after some weeks the blackness slowly spreading from the crack became too much.

Just yesterday I successfully replaced the screen with one of these following this procedure.

I've not yet had any problems with the other three units.

Just keep using it till the vtec kicks in yo!

  • still think these are overrated on OzBargain. The small keyboard is a massive deal breaker IMO.

    • +1

There isn't much better value for somethingike this with a keyboard unless you go tablet ultrabook or old school brick laptop

    • I think it's more that people are expecting too much from them. They're not a gaming laptop, they're not a CAD machine, hell I wouldn't even use one as a regular workstation…….. but as a small, light, portable, expandable laptop they're a decent deal.

  • Thoughts on this vs HP X360 11" 500GB $498 (@ Officeworks)? I like the HP keyboard better but this is such a DEAL.

    • That uses a HDD as the main boot drive, so will be substantially slower than the SSD in this re: boot times, usability, waking from sleep and general usage.

      • Thanks I only really use Chrome w 15-20 tabs open for writing. Do you/does anyone have anything they recommend? Under 1000, anything over & I'd end up buying a Surface Book.
Keyboard is important & I'd like something that is relatively fast.
I currently have a HP stream 11 which all the Hardly Normal guys say is crummy (I get why) but it currently has 29 tabs open and has been a trusty steed, now only starting to crash Chrome every once in a while. Sorry for the huge post. TYSM anyone who reads.

I'd recommend the Lenovo E480. Currently $874.03 with the coupon code "DEALS" - have just posted it here but there is previous discussion here. Very solid Quad-core CPU, plenty of RAM and storage, and a full-HD display which should be more than sufficient.

@donnot: Thank you very much :)

  • Upgradeable anything?

    • Yes. The 4GB RAM module can be upgraded to 8GB. I'm skeptical that it's worth it for this model - the performance bottleneck is almost always the CPU. Also the 128GB 7mm SATA SSD can be replaced by a higher capacity one.

I haven't done either of these upgrades myself but plenty of others have, e.g. look here.

An easier option for boosting storage is to add a micro SD card - it has an external slot on the LHS. I've added a 128GB card on one of mine, which is usable as the D drive.

  • If these lappys has a fhd display, they'd sell so many more, awesome little laptops for a normal everyday user, I'll stick with my surfacebook

  • too small to be usable, and the screen is dim and poor quality (and damn hard to replace)

picked up an HP 250 g6 for $308 from the same sale, I am putting a 15" 1080p IPS panel in it. we'll see how it goes :)

    • Is it a TN screen?

      • in dell? yes.

        • Are you sure about that? I haven't been able to confirm this anywhere. Every place just calls it "LCD".

How about for the HP 250? Is that TN or IPS? And can you link to the sale?

Is it possible to put an SSD in the HP 250?

        • @lostn: can't post the link because it thinks it's a referral. just go to this ebay sale homepage and search for hp 250 g6, it's$385, but with this code just 308.

        • @lostn: both are definitely tn.

but damn easy to change panel to ips on hp. takes 10 minutes tops, you need screwdriver and plastic card

        • @kasaresj:

And where do you get said panel?

        • @lostn: ebay, there's a lot of options, but I buy from UK seller, they offer low prices, and quick delivery.

          seller is lcdkings

item is LG PHILIPS LP156WF4-SPJ1 OR EQUIV PART NUMBER

        • +1

@lostn: on a side note, hp was quite hard to open up to install ssd, so keep that in mind. took me 10 minutes anyway, but it wasn't easy.

        • @kasaresj: Is the screen dark on your HP?

        • @lostn: the original screen is quite dull, usual tn panel.

the ips coming is 250 nits

  • Picked one of these up last year as a beater for occasional use at work and for travel. As others have said the screen is very poor but still useable.

My hard drive failed during a Windows update and a dell technician replaced it the following day under warranty, and came to my house to do it. Pleasantly surprised by the dell tech support process

Highly recommend this laptop! I use it as a primary dev machine over my Mac and love it! Sure, the monitor isn’t all that, but you can hook it up to external displays.

Performance is pretty good (wouldn’t recommend windows as it’s total bloat) but highly recommend trying Linux on it.

I’ve written a guide on Github for this particular laptop.

    Enjoy :)
