I've just signed my partner up for this deal moving from optus.. Same Reception service you get from optus. Customer help is 100 times better than optus.. IMO

Optus offered me $40pm 20gb data no rollover data.
Telstra offered me $49 pm month 15gb take of $10 per month for swapping to Telstra from Optus $39pm

    • don't forget that Virgin also has data gifting to other virgin accounts…

reception still is crap though is some inner city areas, as well as down the peninsula.

also, had really poor reception in FNQ

      • Were in a kinda lucky position the phone reception isn't super great 1/2 bars… But we do get 7-8mbps of internet sometimes as high as 20+ midnight access. It all depends on area. There is a tower parked in the bush 1kkm away. LTE.

I'm currently with Optus and amazed at the deals on the vodanetwork (virgin is Voda ?)

Literally the comment you replied to said it was with Optus. Btw Vodafone don't have any good deals I don't think. Virgin on the other hand do.

Reason I haven't changed is possible network coverage

Also the comment you replied to said it is the same reception service you get from Optus.

Telstra… They still seem to think they are premium brand and can charge a premium

Well they are, and they can because sometimes that's the only option. You can go with Telstra resellers, but they'll have 2nd tier service. For me, there is a massive stretch (30mins by train) where there is limited coverage for Vodafone. This gap decreases to around 5-10 mins on Optus and completely disappears with Telstra.

        • I tried Voda, Optus, and Telstra sim along the Sandringham (Melbourne) line over a 1 month period (using moto G4 and LG V20 both which also support B28), they all had the same drops outs at the same places, although they have their own transmitters, in many locations (not all) they share the same tower .

In regards to the Telstra vs Optus coverage, there is only a few hundred towers difference in the number each has, that's why they quote % of population covered and the number are close.

Yes, I;ve been to places where you get optus but no Telstra or vice versa. Always best to check where you need them most
          http://onwireless.com.au/step-3a-search-the-acma-radcom-webs…
There are many websites that list tower locations.

        • @garage sale: So, I'm confused what are you trying to say here? The coverage and speed is the same across all 3 networks, so pick the cheapest one?
That's not the case, even in the CBD..

    DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAMN!

Now… the question we all want to know is… if you can stream Spotify/Google Play Music for free. Can we plug these account details into our Google Home and stream using it as well (without doing a bluetooth/phone connection) for no extra cost?

Bugger… Stream until 31/03/18 and up to 512kbps… still an awesome deal though if you like data!

data streaming is big deal as handsets get better and faster….. optus does spotify but not apple music , used to have netflix on sim only plans, now they have removed that ….. telstra streams netfix for free ( not sure if all plans ) ……. it’s a big differentor to be able to watch netfix and it doesn’t come off your plan etc….. 20 gb with free streaming is better than 40 gb where you can’t …… after all what do people do with big data plans …. only so much facebook or googling you can do ….. the rest is entertainment.

Data gift to family locked into post paid plans with limited data. $10 auto top ups for our teenager were becoming a nightmare.

      • +3

        telstra streams netfix for free

I have never seen this on a Telstra Mobile plan.

        @garage sale

I'd be very keen for your to move to a data plan that supports Letter Capitalisation.

    • for home use …. if you don’t have nbn and want to hook up google home , get a wireless router with 4g support and a data sharing sim so you don’t need to tether off you phone battery. … i’ve used a tplink vr600 and optus usb dongle …… worked a treat for 2 months until my adsl was fixed.

don't worry, they've extended that streaming expiry date many times over the past few years. I highly doubt they'll take it away ;)

Wasn't the other day $32 for 18gb. Why is this so much more value?
Currently on $32 for like 15GB. Any chance I can haggle for same price for 28GB?

    • No

    • +1

Why ask us? Get onto live chat.

    • They'd have a whole raft of people on $32/15-20GB per month. I'd be surprised if they have you any more than the extra 5GB to match the old deal.

  • Thanks OP

  • What about a plan with no data/low data for cheap? I am on WiFi all the time and barely use data, would love to save on my mobile plan also.

    • You can find plans for around $10 a month, search ozbargain

    • Amaysim $10 plan. Check it out.

    • +2

Same, Amaysim, Lyca or Ovo offer plans for $10.

    • do you mean unlimited calls and text with minimal data, theres's a few around, because they all give you a bit of data but if you blow the cap it's $10 per 1GB ….

  • wonder how long thsesw data limits/prices will last or extend to…

Don't forget that unused international call credit also rolls over with Virgin.

If your an iPhone user, please be aware that WIFi calling and VOLTE are not yet active with Virgin.

Selected Sumsungs are enabled for both WIFI calling and VOLTE…….

    • Not familiar with VoLTE, that's not calling over whatsapp or whatever right??

      • +1

No, it's normal voice calls but over LTE instead of 3G. Sounds better, connects faster, and lets you keep using 4G when on a call instead of dropping back to 3G.

  • +1

Probably should also note that the international call credit is NOT limited to selected countries.

There are a handful of countries that you cant call, like North Korea, Iraq etc…..

    See here…..

Damn it! I need to call that lovely cheerleader I met at the Winter Olympics! :(

      • Lol upvoting purely because it's early Monday morning and you managed to make me believe for a second the Olympics were in North Korea :D

    • Also good to know: not limited to landlines either. You can call international mobile phones as well.

      • yeah, its a pretty good deal.

I dont think any other carrier does this. VF did about 3 years ago….before they switched to "selected countries".

  • I wish the Unlimited standard international calls from Australia to the select 7 countries applicable in all plans

Nice find OP, an additional $40 cashback via CR if you're a new customer.

    Virgin Mobile
Bonus $40.00 Cashback. Cashback is paid on postpaid contracts and/or 12 month SIM only plans, and available to new Virgin Mobile customers only.

    • +8

Similar to last time, we're (CR) increasing cashback to $50 for 12 hours only… 11am to 11pm AEDT today (Sunday). Thanks.

      • +2

Tightarse and Virgin, what a perfect combination.

      • Its been over 6 months (3 months since the estimated approval date) and I didnt receive my cash back of $50. Got an automated reply when I contacted them.

        • Hi. Please PM me your ticket number so I can look into it. The only reason this would be past the due date is if it was originally an untracked sale, you opened a ticket, and Virgin Mobile hasn’t confirmed/approved your sale. Thanks.

It says streaming until 31/3/18. Is it likely they will extend that offer for the non counted data services like spotify?

    • +1

I reckon most likely, I don't see them stripping away data free music streaming.
They recently renewed data gifting too so I think it'll follow suit

      • I don't understand why they'd give a March end date if they're planning on extending it. The only reason I haven't jumped from Telstra a while ago is this end date. Surely this is costing them potential customers?

        • I guess it's just better for them to have an end date just in case they decide to cut the service.
But yeah I think as long as Optus have it, virgin will have it too

  • +4

    2 for 1 velocity points till 20119! That's right. 20119!!!

  • They have this in my account for $50 per month. No loyalty with these people. I will see if I can transfer.

  • Thanks OP, has two months left on my plan, they waved the $30 pay out fee and now on the updated plan. So good

EDIT: Now wondering if i should have got the 45gb plan….if i would ever use that much

    • you need to look at what you are doing with the data on your phone, I've got 17GB and have never hit the limit, when I had 10GB I got close a few times, but to backup to Google, I use wifi

  • do you think that optus will price match this 45gb plan?

I chat to them about their 50gb plan and they can only do 10% off

    • they are limited in what an operator can do due to their billing systems and plans (back of house systems) and operators can't customise (imagine they do a typo and you get charged too much on a plan "they made up" …. bad for the brand)
So you need to wait until they have a plan in their billing system as part of a campaign.

  • Does anyone know if they family pool data if its on the same invoice? Im with optus and getting a much crappier deal but need to forward plan.

    • i think it covers more than family pooling, you can give the data to any Virgin's postpaid plan.

  • Goddamn keep missing the CR cashbacks!!! Now I feel like I can't sign up because I've missed out :(

  • Annoying that they won't offer this as a month-to-month deal.
Why the lock-in if I'm not getting any hardware?

  • Holy crap, I just moved from Telstra to Virgin due to the massive data caps……. the reception is abysmal between like stanmore and town hall…. Telstra only had short black spots.

  • -3

Extremely hard to get approval…. Not sure why oh well

    • +3

That's a personal issue, not a valid neg reason.
