Looks to be brilliant value. I was looking at the surface.
But if i was in the market for an entry surface. I'd be all over this one.

Realistically how does this compare to the entry level surface?

    • +3

Much better - the entry level Surface is an M3 and has 4GB RAM (blasphemy in 2018). This will run circles around it with an M5 and 8GB. Also has double the storage and included pen and keyboard. Also, did I mention it's like a third the price? No brainer!

      • +1

Awesome. What if the surface had 8gb,256gb as well. How would it compare

I'm looking for a machine that is super quick and rspsonive to emails word processing browser and copying files.

I have an old tablet since day 1 it's been laggy. Also it's a touch kb so it's hard to type quick.

I won't be playing games or video editing or anything complex

I was hoping for 8 hrs battery life. My surface rt still gets 8hrs or 9 which is the only reason I haven't thrown it against the wall

        • +2

Surface will have better to much battery life. This gets 5-7hrs battery usage dependent but I get 8.5hrs on battery saver and 50% brightness.

Of course it depends on price though, surface is a rip off when you add in the keyboard + pen which gets included free in this.

    • On paper, this machine has a slightly worse (but still good!) screen, but double the RAM, double the storage and a slightly faster CPU than the entry level surface. Oh, and comes with the keyboard and pen. For 1/2 the price. Obviously it's refurbished though.

I bought this when there were a couple in stock on Friday, was posted today so looking forward to arrival hopefully in time for Easter! I decided I wanted a smaller laptop than my 15.6" workhorse for university work so for word/chrome/web browsing and other moderate tasks it should cope fine.

  • Mmmm, I think going down to the U range is enough of a sacrifice for portability. I wouldn't go down to the m range… especially not on the previous gen.

Description specs are inconsistent. In the ebay item title it states the CPU is a M3-6Y54 but in the detailed specifications description they state the CPU is a m5-6Y54.

Given that the M3-6Y54 is a non-existent part number it's entirely possible the CPU is in fact a m5 but there is a risk that it's actually the lower end m3-6Y30.

    • Yes , this is bit confusing, is it m5 or m3

  • Good price, but that CPU is pretty slow. Similar to Macbook Air 2013 base model. Not sure how much that matters for most people though.

  • The reviews are saying batt life is poor at 6hrs. And keyboard a bit clunky

    • +1

Can confirm battery life is around 6-7 hrs. I can get 8.5 hrs on battery saver and 50% brightness.
Keyboard is quite bad, but if it's flat its alright.
Either you can be a keyboard masher with it elevated (with bounce) or just cope with the thin keyboard flat on the table.

Ive had it since the m7 was offered for $479 early Feb

  • doh…. was just about to buy and it's all gone….

  • +1

    Damn. any more stock?

I post this every time it comes up, but who ever bought this watch out of the white light of death. I have a fair few of these in my fleet at work, and they've almost all been sent back on warranty due to this.

    • hmm thanks i will hold on then.
but weird no one here in ozb complained with the same issue, maybe not happening straight away, or they just buy and resell, or buy play with it one day then go to the drawer collecting dust.

but that price is very good….. as long warranty is valid i dont mind punting on this

      • Perhaps during the refurbishment they fixed the issue, but 90% of them for us died. I guess just something to be cautious of.

        I did comment

And this sunday ~4pm it happened again : circumstances this time was gradual slow? into a freeze while watching a video on Sunday ~4pm

Tried yesterday, and this morning to turn it on, probably died for good this time

Sent an email to Grays before but it turned on again, going to follow up with Grays by email again.

  • Hi Team,

Anybody know how this chargers, is it micro USB? or a more powerful laptop adaptor(style)

    Cheers

    • +1

Its essentially USB male, but its own proprietary version of it.

    • +1

Yup, as dilbery123 said it's via USB (a modified port).

The laptop has 2 usb ports - one for charging (when not charging, you can plug other usb devices in).

    • Thanks guys, so i guess what im asking is can i charge it off a normal usb charger?

or do i need to use a special lenovo charger?

  • I bought the m7 model brand new. Had it for ~3 months and really like it. I use it primarily for uni/work and youtubing.

My biggest issue is by far the keybaord - the touch sensor is super sensitive and if I'm typing and even slightly come into contact with the touchpad, it may skip to a different line while typing. Definitely something that's very annoying - hence why I always use a mouse and deactivate the touchpad sensor.

  • I bought a similar lenovo grays refurb a few weeks ago.
Its still faulty, as in the refurb clearly didnt work. (randomly completely dies in the middle of typing something etc.)

Now having to deal with grays returns.

Took them 2 days for them to tell me they'll look into it and get back to me in a couple more days.
    Sigh.

    Something to keep in mind.
Also the ebay ad said 12 month lenovo warranty.

But actual laptop came with a grays 'clever goods' warranty description saying 3 months- ive asked them WTF, they'll get back to me…. eventually

    • That's interesting, I've read others have had the same problem, but mine arrived today (ordered 22 Mar arrived 28 Mar) and the sheet of paper does actually state it's covered under a 12m warranty, which is a relief. Maybe they have updated this due to the volume of enquiries?

Honestly mine looks almost brand new, would never have known it was refurbished. Been updating windows / installing things since I turned it on but all hardware seems to work. Have some problems with the touchpad jumping all over the place and not functioning as well as it really should, but otherwise can't fault it yet. Oh, the pen came with no battery at all which I suppose is a bit annoying.
