Retina 5K Screen is awesome, but FFS when are they going to ditch the spinning HDD?
Its been 10 years now since 1TB HDD was cutting edge….

Yeah, I don't understand this either. Apple is always touting the benefits of faster storage. Their notebooks were using PCIe SSDs before practically anyone else and they still have this old tech in their iMacs.

      • 2 years ago I removed the 1TB HDD from my late ‘13 27 iMac(non retina) and installed a 512 GB 850 Pro Samsung SSD.
The best investement I have ever made on a computer!
The boot time from 70+ seconds went down to 19 seconds!
The programs open instantly, if I recall correctly Photoshop CC loads in 5 seconds!
This HDD they are putting in the iMacs is slooooooooowwwww

        • They still sell the base model iMac with a 5400rpm hard drive - think its been like that since 2013.

Yes, but how much is a quality 1Tb SSD? I'm sure Build to Order has that option.

  • If you CAN wait there are rumours the iMac will get an update either on June 4th or later in September.. Might be worth waiting if you are looking for better hardware…

    • Yes, likely to be a CPU refresh to the new Coffee Lake. I reckon it's worth the wait as you'll get a bump from 4 cores to 6 cores, which is quite significant.

  • Just watch see this before you buy any Apple new iMacs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-NU7yOSElE

    • Was watching this yesterday. Sad to see the isheep trying to justify it and defend apple.

Seriously its not even a warranty repair they were asking for. They were asking to pay for the repair. Just repair it.

Granted the video had theatrics thrown in but look at it if it was an actual joe blow unknown who accidentally damaged it. Willing to pay to get it repaired and they get treated the same. Still think its acceptable treatment?

    • Pretty sure this sort of refusal would be illegal under Australian Consumer Law?

    • This wouldn't apply here in Australia.

Yes agree agree. Apple is a shonky company given that they make computers which are no longer upgradeable as they were in the past (unless you are truly intrepid). The purpose of this is inbuilt redundancy and huge markups for additional memory or for solid state drive upgrades. Tell me how Apple justifies a $1000 premium to go for a 1 TB SSD over standard hard drive? Thievery! Another stupidity is the removal of necessary ports which necessitates the purchase of dongles. Wake up to Apple's greed.

$2.5K for a mechanical drive (not even 2TB) and only 8GB RAM.
    Such poor value here.

The Fusion Drive does have a 32GB SSD partition, so it works like a larger SSD for most people.
