[Important Announcement] Buzz Telco Is Shutting down

Table of alternative deals (publicly editable spreadsheet)

Received the email from Buzz this morning.

It is with great regret that today, I announce that our contract with Vocus Ltd has been terminated effective immediately.

As a result of this termination, I am forced to announce that, effective immediately, Buzz Telco will cease trading. I have worked with a number of other providers to get arrangements in place to ensure that customers are not left without service during these unfortunate times.

I have spoken with three separate providers, who are all willing to offer deals to our customers wishing to transfer across to them. The deals are as outlined below:

Mungi Internet - $5 off for the first 5 Months - Coupon Code “BUZZ”. Customers of Buzz Telco are welcome to SMS Mungi on 0427 188 626 or Live Chat at mungi.online/buzz. This offer is available to all current Buzz Telco Customers and will expire on the 31st of May 2018.

Dodo Internet – Vocus has arranged for a promotional offer with Dodo for transitioning Buzz Telco customers in its communications with them about impacted services. Dodo will offer current Buzz Telco customers 1 month free of charges on their chosen NBN plan when you connect for 24 months. The free month will be applied to the 4th month of service. This offer is valid until the 1st of May 2018. The credit on your account is not redeemable for cash and is subject to Dodo’s terms and conditions available from their website. To take up this offer, you must quote code “FREE#MONTHS” and sign up by calling a Dodo service representative on 1300 843 120.

Aussie Broadband – Aussie Broadband is pleased to offer Buzz Telco customers their first month free when switching to Aussie Broadband. As you are already connected to the nbn Aussie Broadband can transfer your connection within minutes (so you can reduce any risk of downtime). Aussie Broadband offer all-Australian Support, no connection fees and no lock-in contracts (so if you don’t love them in the first month, you’re free to leave). To take up this offer, you will be required to sign up at the Aussie Broadband website (aussiebroadband.com.au) or by calling their friendly team on 1300 880 905 and use the coupon code “BUZZFREETRIAL” at the checkout. This offer is available to all current Buzz Telco customers and will expire on the 6th of May 2018.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank all of our current and past customers, as well as our dedicated staff, for the commitment and loyalty you have shown towards Buzz Telco. We have had our ups and downs, and I am devastated to see the journey coming to an end. I wish all of our former customers and staff all the best in their journeys, and I am sincerely sorry that we will not be a part of it.

Please be aware that, as a result of this process, our phones will be taken offline shortly, and all active services will be disconnected on Thursday. Please ensure that you have placed an order with your new provider by Close of Business tomorrow to ensure any downtime can be avoided.

I will still personally be responding to lodged tickets. Please be patient, as this has been reduced to a one-man operation as we wind down. As such, delays will be experienced.

Any customers with pending orders will be contacted on an individual basis within the coming days to arrange for refunds of your accounts.

All recurring payments, inclusive of PayPal Subscriptions, have been cancelled to ensure that customers are not charged unnecessarily.

I would once again like to thank you for your time with Buzz Telco and wish you all the best. I am truly sorry that we will not be able to continue this journey with you.

Kind Regards

In my case it looks like the last monthly charge was for the service period 1 Apr - 30 Apr. I was sent an emailed Invoice for May, but it has not charged to my card. So if my service ends Thursday 26 Apr, I'd only be due a few dollars refund. Not worth complaining about, even for an OzBarginer. :)

      • I just paid for 20th April to 19th May the other day so :(

        • Me too. I just raised a ticket for refund of next month charges.

        • +2

Me too but it's only $19/m.

        • I was just charged for the 25th onwards :(

        • Glad I paid with paypal, Mine was also 20th April to 19th of May. Initiated paypal dispute.

    • im assuming they cant charge a pending bill due on the 4th of May if they close on Thursday? i cant seem to remove my CC details to ensure the direct debit doesnt go through.

      • You can try and go to the invoice and set the payment method to paypal. I think it has stopped auto-pay for me in the past.

      • I was able to change my CC to a test card number. That would help stopping any future direct debit.

    Hi All,

I prepaid my account and had $1000 in it. Looks like I am screwed. Any one has any idea what are my rights ? I shouldnt have done that. Feeling dejected now :( and they have all the phones disconnected.

    • +13

Sorry.. I have ask! why would you pay them a $1000 in advance?

      • My bad. Was getting an extra 2 months for that , looks like everything is lost now.

        • +15

Pre paying 1000 for 2 months is not a good deal surely.

    • Paid through credit card (Now closed :( ) , anyone has an idea if I can get that through credit card provider (Westpac) ????? Sorry am pretty clueless what to do next. Thanks

      • +7

Maybe raise a charge back with your credit card provider? Give them a call pronto

        • Done and raised it. Waiting now

    • If they are declaring bankruptcy, then you'd be an unsecured creditor, and probably screwed. Maybe you'd get cents in the dollar back - you'd have to state your claim to the administrator. But if they have sufficient cash to meet their debts and are just winding up the company, then you'd be entitled to a refund. However, I expect it'll be difficult to maintain contact with them once they shutdown.

      • -1

I'm going to assume they don't have sufficient credit and are winding up the company, so he/she is screwed…

      • I suspect that a liquidator will be appointed by the Federal Court (on the application of AAPT) on 2 May - https://www.comcourts.gov.au/file/Federal/P/NSD323/2018/acti…

I would suspect that unsecured creditors will get nothing back.

  • -3

    Im devastated

  • +1

not sure if I should go for 50 instead of 100.

already used to the download speed…

I may go for 100 plan with Mungi.

    https://mungi.com.au/plans

this is the cheapest I could find so far.

    • +1

if you dont mind limited data check out telecube's whirlpool offer, or check this spreadsheet someone made up (very messy as it's public) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1X1y3i1TxlPgSnzY_aiJP…

    • Plus if we can all refer each other, an additional $20. Wonder if it works for new signups?

    • try the 50 with Mungi, if you don't like it … switch for their 100 plan. No contract either way. It's what I am doing.

      • it ends on monday.

    • Does anybody know whether Mungi shapes Torrents, VPN etc.

I know they have static IP addresses for just under $10 which rep says will go down but do they have CGNAt or can you get an outside accessible IPv4 like Telecube has for free?

      • How do ISP do that?
What if you are using VPN ?

        • They inspect your packets and if they have a shaping policy will slow your traffic.

And if you are using a VPN they can't inspect it but may just slow down all VPN.

      • I think they do have CGNAT

        Yep they do

  • They literally billed on Sunday via PayPal for my month starting tomorrow!. going to try and move today and dispute it (only my third month and I didn't even realise that paypal was set to auto debit as I had manually process previous payments.).

I can only sync at 32Mb so I'm looking for a new provider now - I was going to Jump to ABB but they won't sign me up today due to their self imposed congestion rules - so no availability in my area until mid next month. :/ (after their offer to buzz customer ends :/ )

So i'm looking for a good 50mb plan… possibly for 1 month contract free.

  • Might MATE it with the $10 off promo, at least it gives me 6 months to wait for better internet offers..

    • which promo? which provider?

      • +2

Mate has $10 off for 50mbps plans for 6 months $59, then $69 after. Actually I ended up going with Mungi with the $5 buzz discount for 5 months $60 50mbps. Goes back to $65 after, but at least I'll have 5 months to wait for a better deal if any.

        • +1

same here. signed up with mungi. No sign of their email saying its active. Chat support told me 8 business days. Hopefully its active tomorrow

        • +1

@ash7503: some people got connected a few hours later. I got the email of login, but not the active email. Anyway, they said that Buzz customers will not have any downtime if they sign up to Mungi even if it takes a few days.

    • Yer I think i'll also go with MATE.

  • +1

You will think I'm making this up but this morning I was thinking about what a crazy business plan Buzztelco has and hoping they would last until the 12 months at half price runs out- 30 minutes later the email arrives- D'OH!

    I paid my bill yesterday.

    Were this mob cheap?

If so this could be the reason they may have a problem

    www.itnews.com.au/news/nbn-co-to-create-a-class-war-on-its-n…?

"The situation came to light in part because NBN Co finally released technical details [pdf] of a new permanent price construct it announced late last year.

They contained a surprise: setting a new minimum wholesale cost for an NBN broadband service at $45 a month, regardless of whether the service is 12Mbps, 25Mbps or 50Mbps."

Dont blame me for this NBN mess….. i voted labor in september 2013.

    • They were already cheap then they gave all new and existing customers half price for 12 months- how was that ever going to work? Combined with their cashflow problems- recipe for disaster.

    • "They contained a surprise: setting a new minimum wholesale cost for an NBN broadband service at $45 a month, regardless of whether the service is 12Mbps, 25Mbps or 50Mbps."

      Anything for that $….

      • +3

Amazing, we paid billions to build it and to use it we are raped in the behind. It's not right.

  • anyone considering the ABB option for the first month free? and then taking up the Mungi offer next month? or is that just too much mucking around? FTTP connection so downtime should be minimal.

    • just signed up to telecube 60/mth 50/20 500gb. too much mucking around otherwise, i dont think I will stay with ABB for the $$ they're asking for. FTTP as well, waiting for confirmation now.

    • Signed up with ABB to prevent the downtime. At least I would now have 1 month to figure out the better deal.

      • +1

Well telecube has extended no sign up fee until further notice and could disappear within the month and mungi only 5 months of similar pricing… might pull trigger on telecube to save having to think about it again lol

    • Don't forget you need to give ABB 30 days notice to cancel.

      • Crap. Forgot about that. Just signed up. Better cancel the one month free trial in advance.

      • This might’ve made my decision for me. Thanks for the heads up

      • +2

I called them today about that. I was told I would only need to contact them 1-2 days before the new billing cycle and they would recommend transferring your service out first and then call them to avoid prolonged downtime. Already signed up with Mungi with set activation date as 1 month from now.

Actually really love ABB's speed…but it's a bit much. Hope Mungi is just as good.

        • I was given the same story. Make sure I contact them prior to the next billing to cancel if I have gone elsewhere.

I made the jump and was connected within 2 hours (was warned that depending on NBN's workload could be up to 1 - 5 days). Was looking at Optus but they would not look at contact any shorter than 3 business days. Now to decide if I want Fetch TV and another change to Optus for the same price as AussieBB.

        • @artofbs: what about iinet? No one seems to be considering them

    • +1

Why would there be any mucking about? You have the luxury of trying 4 services and are able to cancel one before it renews with one phone call.

    • its not like first month free with 2nd month u have to pay/?

  • +1

I'm signing to Telecube today. I guarantee there will be a Telecube offer of no setup fee tomorrow.

Being in the bottom quartile for pessimism is equal to smoking 2.5 packs of cigarettes per day. I think that's what the doc on the radio said- puff puff- very heavy smoker.

    • +4

there is already one without setup fee - https://www.telecube.com.au/internet/nbn/plans/special/08951…

      • +1

You beauty! Thanks. It was $49 on the page I was looking at.

    • did you just sign up online or give them a call?

Does anyone know if we will be transferred immediately or how long it takes?

      • i signed up online using the link without setup fees. No idea how long but if you're fttp (which i am) i'm guessing it'll be the fastest transfer, apparently hfc is a bit of a problem with them. my order is confirmed but no ETA yet

        • I'm FTTB as I live in an apartment.

Hope its just as fast as FTTP

        • @johnthepg:also apartment. But fttp. Lucky me

        • +1

          @cray:

im connected with telecube now. look less than 6 hrs. Super impressed

      • I signed up online.

        Summary

The order will be processed manually from here and we will contact you if we need further information.

You will receive updates by email as the order progresses.

If you have questions or want a status update please email [email protected]

        • I've done multiple transfers and it's typically done by the end of next working day… Not counting Buzz Telco who were taking a tonne of sign ups when I joined.

      • -1

Vocus to Vocus transfer will probably take a week.

      • My service has already been provisioned by Telecube!

Ordered at 12:30pm, ready to go at 7pm!

      • +1

I'm on HFC in Perth and just churned to Telecube (50/20). Transfer took a few hours but only after I had to choose from 2 options:
        1. Connect to a Melbourne POP - higher latency & slower speeds.
        2. Disconnect and reconnect to local POP - unknown outage (potentially weeks depending if NBN decide they also want a tech visit)
Opted for 1, hoping it can be moved to local POP before too long. Fast.com showing 12-16Mbps now (8pm), speedtest around 29down/15up.
Buzz was great, consistent 90/35 - sad to lose that one.

        • If your on HFC didn't you have to disconnect first wait for your port to clear and then they connect you up?

  • Do they have a contact number working? Tried the 1800 one and it is disconnected. Gave DODO a call and they mentioned that none of the Buzztelco credit would be transferred (as I expected) and buzztelco dont have a number to reach out to. I do have raised an incident on their portal though. Not sure if anyone would attend to it as its just Jeremy there now.

    • Open a Paypal Case?

      • Was through CC not paypal. Already raised it with Westpac (the cc provider).

        • +1

          Good luck mate!

      • Yeah, sux being their customer now. Luckily I paid with PayPal, so I've opened a case with them.

    • +1

The email says all their phones are down.

  • +1

    I went with Mungi.

  • +1

I went with Mungi as well.. anyone notice that their interface looks very similar to Buzz's?

    • haha… so its not just me then! I noticed it in the sign up screen as well as their online portal once I logged in!

  • +1

looks like aussie broadband is best option.

50Mbps plan - $63.20 / month if prepay 12 months in advance or $59.20 if prepay 6 months in advance this includes free month.

100 Mbps - $79.20 / month if prepay 12 months or $74.25 prepay 6 months in advance this includes free month.

    • +1

Telecube is offering 50Mbps $60 with 500+5000GB(off-peak) for $60 via whirlpool promo. https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2714882

Who needs more than 500GB of peak time data? No contract, no sign up fee, no pre-pay.

      • +1

actually telecube is a pre-paid option, you'll need to deposit the money in for the order to be submitted. but yes i did sign up for the 60/month deal too, seems like a good option for those coming from buzz

      • I need more than 500 and I also need international transit that is reliable. Telecube misses the second mark (Tried them for a month)

        • Did you happen to find a good international transit that is reliable ?

    • +4

Wait, after seeing a isp collapse you’re willing to prepay up to a year in advance? Call me crazy but that’s non sense.

Read the guy who prepaid $1000 to buzz and now will probably be a unsecured creditor lol

    • Is this offer always available? I remember it was only once off and only available to people that have been with them for 6 months+. I would stay with ABB after the free month if they could do that….

      • Yer sales rep just said loyal customers only get the prepay option discount :( I wont be going with them now as its too overpriced for me

    • Where is the option to prepay for discount?

:( Please note: we have currently stopped connections in your area due to our policy of not selling above more than 80% of available bandwidth. We don't believe it's fair to sell you a crappy, over-crowded service. We have more bandwidth ordered in your area which we expect to come on board around 2018-04-30.
If you're happy to wait you can continue with the signup process below and we'll keep you updated via email on how the bandwidth upgrade is going.

      This is with ABB

  • +1

Hmm deciding between Telecube and Mungi… Anyone cares to share their 2 cents on these 2 providers?

    • +2

I would go Mungi between the two. They're talking about moving to wideband for L2 which is the wholesale arm of AussieBroadband.

Ive been a long time customer of Aussie and looked at Telecube to save some money (trialled them on port 2 of the ntd). Despite the cost, it wasnt up to par for our use case (streaming international)

Ive also heard they are getting swamped by calls and people not being able to get through (wasn't my experience when they were smaller)

      So go Mungi

  • Anyone else considering the 250mbps plan with Aussie Broadband just to make the best of a bad situation? Try it for a month for free while you have a look around and find the best deal. Particularly FTTP people I suppose, as downtime will be non existent really.

  • +3

I signed up on the Telecube Whirlpool deal for $60 a month. Pretty negligible difference and Whirlpool users are pretty quick to shoot down bad support, but everyone seems pretty happy over there.

I actually quite liked Buzz, went with them on the first deal they posted, saved a lot of money and only had those few days of downtime which all their customers got.

    • +3

Same here. Actually thought buzz was quite a straight forward bunch to deal with except for the time they had the issue with the server. Never a problem since (besides their supplied crap modem). Telecube hopefully lives up to its hype

    • +1

Mate do you have a url for the $60 whirlpool deal ? I will never prepay anyone in my life. Lesson learnt the very wrong way for me.

      • +2

https://www.telecube.com.au/internet/nbn/plans/special/08951… follow this link and change the speed accordingly. i'm guessing openhand signed up to the same plan as i did. 60/month 500gb 50/20mbps

and yes it's prepaid service, 60 bucks to be paid for connection to be confirmed

      • +1

Correct, what Cray said. I am now on the 500gb 50/20.

I've got an email from them already saying the order is in, just waiting for provision details.

    • I was happy with them too, however I left once they blocked the majority of torrent traffic. They wouldn't even admit to me they did this to save bandwidth, claimed it was required by the courts (which it isn't. The court order was to block certain URLs).

Ended up moving to Telecube, however did still refer people to Buzztelco who weren't going to use torrents.
