  • Wow data plan wars lately

    • +12

Lately? Let me cast your mind back to 2013…

Back when we had glorious plans such as the Every Day Connect $60 from Telstra - 1GB of included data.

To make matters worse, it had actually gone down from their previous offering - the Freedom Connect $59 - 1.5GB included.

But, thanks to actual competition mainly due to the survival of the Vodafone network, since approx. 2015 (when you would still be paying $130 for 3GB of data on Telstra) there has been an ongoing, delicious, absolutely all out data war.

Which brings us to today. We expect a minimum of 3GB with $30 plans as standard, but really it was quite a different story not so long ago.

The next war is the lowering of the monthly cost. It's pretty clear from the pricing of Optus and Telstra that they are more than happy to throw more data at customers, but less keen on reducing their lowest monthly offerings below the magical $30 point.

The silver lining for customers, though, is that inflation is a real thing and so ever so slowly, our mobile plans are becoming not only more data-ful, but also cheaper in real terms.

      • Times have changed though. With data if you want to stream netflix or your latest kdrama or anime alot of media consumers could chew through a gb easily. Really i think triple digit data or unlimited at capped speeds will eventually arrive.

My 2011 30MB starter plan from Optus says hello!

  • Looks like it's available for Student Discounts too via https://offer.optus.com.au/student-hub

    • I got a code from optus but when it said invalid code. :(

  • Can I use their $60 for 100GB deal here instead of their Data Sims $70 for 100GB (https://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobile-broadband/dat…) as a home broadband solution until I finally get NBN?

    • Nevermind, the data sim is still a better option for Month-To-Month…

    • +1

I recommend you to wait a bit more for the deal of mobile broadband come.

Since just 2 months ago, Optus just have deal for 70$ per month for 200GB (double data)
Also just 2 months ago, they already have the deal 40$ for 30GB, unlimited call and text.

So I think the mobile broadband deal will come soon.

  • Does only post paid plans come with unlimited netfli. Etc streaming?? Assuming it looks like prepaid options dont with optus.

Just a reminder that virgin mobile have a $32/month plan for 15gig if anyone is keen on a slight saving for less data

  • +2

$30 plan is garbage though. 6GB data?

    • +2

if you want $30 plan, use this link comes with 15GB data

      • Can this one be stacked with the 3 months free and if it can, how do you do it? Thanks

        • +1

          Not sure

    • I see $30 plan with 3GB?

  • -1

Can you merge 2 phone numbers on one 30Gb plan.

    • No, but you can share if both have 15GB plans ($32 each - see other comments)

  • I opened the link on mobile and was offered this

  • +1

For new customers, this deal can also be combined with the 3 months free deal (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/377151) by using mobile phone and go to optus.com.au. This means that the $40/month will be waived for the first 3 months and thus total amount over 12 months becomes $360, same as $30/month. $30 for a whole 30gb!

My new contract just got active a few hours ago with the $30/month for 15GB so I missed out by an inch sadly…

    • Can it? I literally just activated my new sim an hr ago for the 3 month free deal and then I saw this new offer.

Is there anyway I can change to this and get a whopping 100GB for $45/month ($60 plan with 3 months free and double data)?

      • I tried talking with one of the guys through online chat but he said no and that I'd have to pay the early termination fee ($144 max) if I want to start over… Oh well, 15gb it is then.

        • +1

I just got off chat and apparently I have both the 3 month free and double data deals on my account.

He said the bonus data would only apply on the second month though.

          Not sure how that works.

And I can’t check my plan on my Optus and keep getting a page saying technical difficulties.

  • +1

This isn't exactly the deal, but as the girl at Optus was setting this up.for me, I noticed their program featured the 200GB plan that expired last month. We were getting along so I asked her to see what happened if we tried that one. Low and behold, 200GB!

So yeah, that plan is still available if you talk the right talk!

    • +1

You may have gotten her in trouble…… at the end of the day, it's her decision to pick it and that's her fault. But the system will sometimes have previous plans and previous deals for reps to select. Optus has very strict internal auditing systems, if a plan is picked outside an expiry date and the rep selects it, if it's on purpose, by mistake etc, that rep will hunted down and feedback will be placed on them.

      • Got downvoted cause I speak the truth. Go ask any Optus Retail Rep……. this isn't an opinion, this is a fact.

  • My uni email still works, sweet!

    • My uni email expiring soon. What happened if I'm not a student anymore?

  • Does anyone know what happens to data sims if recontracting with Optus? Would love the extra data but keen to keep my 2 data sims

    • +3

They don't touch those 2 data sims unless you tell them otherwise. Those 2 x data sims will be going as per normal and data share as per normal.

  • if only my data connection's reliable on the train….

why it keeps dropping out in townhall and central and redfern in 2018 is beyond me

  • Recontracted my phone to the 30gb offer, changed the other half's from prepaid to the $30 15gb offer and while I was at it, changed my NBN plan to a cheaper, faster version. Not a bad 45 minutes on live chat. Between us, just on the phones, we've gone from 13g between us to 45gb.

  • Can i keep my same number and sim and optus just change the plan from prepaid to this deal because im going overseas monday and if i take this plan now i guess my current sim will get cut off and i wont be able to use roaming.

    • Yes you can :)

    • Roaming is not very cheap btw. Doesn't take into account what you have within Australia, although if you're desperate you can still use your number overseas, i wouldn't.

      • +1

Its a work number I just use the roaming to see who's calling me or messaging me then I reply on an optus sim with $30 credit that I paid $5 or $10 for.

  • +1

only need a $2/m sim to data pool ….
    But the lowest is $30…

    • Used to be free!

    • In some hostels I’ve stayed in they seem to have a range of SIM cards for free in the brochure/flyer section of reception. Go check out some hostels and see if they have this!

Edit: in Sydney check out The Pod Sydney on Pitt St (entry on whatever the side street is) this is where I’ve seen them most recently

  • So after 12 months does the plan and data amount stay the same or does double data end.

    • I thought 15GB ADDITIONAL DATA FOR 24MTHS

  • can you get the $30 plan with 15gb of data (not 6gb) AND the 3 months free?

    • Yeah if you follow the links in the OP it should add both to cart.

Doesn't seem to work on mobile for me but it worked on my laptop.

edit: nah can't seem to get that on the $30 :(

  • Just changed to sim only, 6gb, student discount $26…. Very happy.

  • +1

If porting from Optus prepaid do they have to send a new SIM or do they just activate the new contract with the existing SIM?

Quote at checkout shows:"TRANSFERRING YOUR NUMBER TO OPTUS
Keeping your number with Optus is easy, we'll grab the details we need over the next few steps. Your number won't transfer until you've received your delivery."

    • ok so if im overseas for 2 weeks when its sent my current prepaid sim will remain working until i get home and stick the new sim in.

      • Are you confirming or asking? Did Optus confirm for you? Are you also on Optus prepaid?

  • Can someone please explain how you get 30gb for $30, because I can't see then when i click on the link provided

    • +2

It’s $40 for 30gb but you get 3 months free, effectively ending up being $30 a month over 12 months.

  • If I want to keep my number but I’m with Coles Mobile (Optus network), would I be best porting out using say Aldi first or attempting to do it in one go?

Additionally, if I sign up today, I won’t be able to activate until I get my sim, but will I be able to be selective and not activate until like June? Or will I have to do it sooner rather than later?

    • Do it in one go - there is an option for 'upgrade my prepaid'. Seems to work OK.

      • And that’ll work from Coles prepaid?

  • Nice. Just upgraded the fam.

  • 3 months free is only for reginoal customers.
I think there is no way to get it for an exsiting Optus number.

  • Couldn't stack student discount on top of these deals as promo code only works through Student Hub. The Student Hub doesn't have the 3 months free deal. Has anyone been able to get around this?

    • +1

Nah I tried but couldn't get it to work.

  • the 3 months free is good for me because im overseas 3 months a year .
    .

  • Hi
When does the activation need to be done by? Can I just get this signed up receive sim and activate (port from another provider) in like a month?

    • When I ported to Optus back in 2016, I was able to request that the sim be sent unactivated.

  • +1

I clicked on the links but the 3 month discount doesn't show up. Has it ended?

    • +3

Not working for me. I had it in my cart, last night, but had to go do something else - now the cart is still showing same order - but without the 3 months free :(

From the Optus live chat, tonight.

      You • 06:36 PM
Has the 3 months-free offer finished, and I missed out?
      Serena M • 06:36 PM
It is not available with double data plans and also it is only for new services only for selected postal codes.

      • +3

Yeah I got a call and sadly the offers can't be combined. The website is misleading

        • +1

So, they removed the 3 months free from your account?

        • Did they cancel your order? I placed my order on last Sat, but haven't heard anything from them yet.

        • +1

I didn't even receive a call. Says my credit check is unsuccessful. But I just took out a home loan few months ago.

  • Is $30 for 30GB comes with 300 international minutes?

  • I am currently on optus prepaid.

I tried to sign up yesterday.

When i was browsing the deals there was an option to upgrade from prepaid, but when i decided and tried to sign up it was a different page and it was asking which telco i was currently with. Telstra or other. Then it was all about porting from another network. There was no option to say i am already on optus network.

Will this cause any issue if i am already with the same company? I don't want to have to call their CS if it gets stuffed up

    • Perhaps it might be best to get an Optus rep to walk you through the correct process - I used the live chat function on the weekend and basically the rep did everything for me, just needed to answer his questions

      • That was actually what i did first.
The rep got all my details and checked my account and was typing a reply when i lost the connection. Mobile reception is rubbish but optus is better than the rest.

I was trying to do it myself because at worst i just have to refresh a page. When i try the reps again it will probably just drop out again 😑

  • I was on an $85/month plan (phone included) and switched to the $50/month sim only plan.

I had to pay out the contract (4 months @ $44/month) so effectively I’ve increase data from 8gb to 60gb for an extra cost of $9/month.

I was happy to resign with Optus and didn’t need a new phone anytime soon.

    Happy days.

  • I successfully got $40 offer for $30.

    • Great, when did you sign up? Do you mean the 3 months free offer? Were you in regional postcode?

      • +1

no, I did not sign up with 3 months offer. I signed up with 25% online sign up discount for 24 months. I ordered on Sunday and my sim got delivered today.

        • How to get 25% online sign up discount?

        • Same my 25% discount still works and was eligible for 3 months off.. making it $20/m with 30GB!
