First time I have seen a core i7 laptop being sold at a major retailer for under $1k.
With 4 cores and 8 with hyperthreading, it's probably grunty enough to substitute for your desktop.

Core i7 - 740QM
4 Gb Ram
640 Gb HDD

No bluray, and it has a 15.6" screen that only runs at 1366x768, and with Sandy Bridge's recent release, it's one generation old now… Watch out for more old-stock clearances!!

If you can get wishcards at 5% discount to facevalue, then it works out cheaper at $930.05
I guess if you know Woolies/DSE staff, it can be even cheaper than that!

    Ah man. I just bought this laptop for $990 at JB Hi-Fi.

    its a solid laptop. Pretty powerful. Its my first ever laptop purchase and I was happy with it.

      True. I want a laptop with higher resolution but can't afford too expensive ones. No luck to find one, at least for now.

    These processors (QM) are power hungry (45 Watts) and dissipate a lot of heat.
    I have a DELL with similar specs and with a 9-cell battery, I get 2.5-3.0 hours use.

    If battery life is important, 'M' processors (35 watts) are a better choice.

    There are low voltage and ultra low voltage processor ranges (25W and 18W), but I haven't seen laptops built with them yet.

      QM = QUAD core mobile
      M = mobile - these are only dual core

    not a bad price at all considering it also has a dedicated ATI Mobility Radeon" HD 5650 Graphics (1GB)

    certainly a good steal! till Sandy-Bridge equipped notebooks starts hitting shelves later this month.

    This is the older i7-720QM not the current i7-740QM (which is faster by about 300 3D mark points (which is alot))

        i7-740QM is 1.73Ghz whilst i7-720QM is 1.6Ghz.

        Take a look at the specs sheet on DSE.

    I heard Sandy-Bridge processors have some sort of anti-piracy function built in, can anyone with more expertise please confirm. Not that it would affect me of course….just saying.

      for HDMI use through the Videocard built into the CPU … it doesnt play videos that are not legit.. its NOT ANTI PIRACY and next to not many people at all will be using the onboard videocard.. even so you can always bypass this with software like VLC media player :)
