When Have You Bought Something Because of a Discount, Then Kept Buying at Its Full Price?

Most OzB members only buy stuff when it is discounted and would never consider buying things at full price if they can avoid it. When have you been encouraged to buy something because of a discount, then liked it so much that you continued to buy it at full price?

In my case, the other week the butcher had a notice on his blackboard that chicken kievs were $5. I thought that sounded nice, and the supermarket didn't sell any nice prepacked chicken things so I gave it a try. OMG they were the most delicious things I had ever eaten. Delicious buttery sauce going all through the veggies and mashed potato. Crumb perfect and crispy, just perfection. A billion times nicer than anything I can make myself or anything prepacked at the supermarket. I went back to get some yesterday and they were $6.50 each :-( But I bought them anyway without hesitation cause they were so nice. And I will probably continue to do so once or twice a week (maybe getting two each when they're on special instead of one).

That is how people get hooked on drugs, they are offered them cheap to start with and then the price goes up when they are hooked :)

This is why people like Butchers have specials; get you to try something new and then continue to buy it after the special. It is worth paying the extra for something you really like rather than buying dross just because it is cheap. (I will now hand in by Ozbargain badge for saying this).

Plot twist: The Kiev's were stuffed with more than just buttery sauce.

I don't think that happens in real life.

A rock outside the realms of Liberal and Labor.

          Has OzB gone quackers?

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

        • +11

Do you? Show me some real world evidence of the "cheap until you get hooked" phenomenon.

Ice is cheaper in Australia today than it has ever been.

Cocaine is more or less as expensive now as it has been for a long while.

Weed is weed. The product changes maybe but the price doesn't, depending on who you know.

What drugs does this blanket 'mom and dad'-levels-of-drug-awareness statement apply to?

        • +6

@hetzjagd: These people probably have been watching too many movies or have close to zero personal experience using, buying or dealing drugs.

          Prices don't change, quality does.

@blibster: all hooked on the quack :/ …. and now also the chicken kievs

      • Lol

        Well done captain obvious

    • -4

This is beyond retarded. People don't get addicted to drugs because they were on sale the first time.

      • +10

For many people, it's certainly their introduction into drugs when cheap/free offered within a group to 'just try' or 'live a little' then opens them to new world of trying it again later on then again then eventually dependency and addicition kicks in.

        • +10

I hear theres a DrugsBargain on the dark web these days

        • That's not the pop culture scenario. The scenario is a dealer targets people, often school aged kids, with the offer of free or cheap drugs. What you're referring to is more of a gateway scenario

        • @Jackson:Streetrx.com, you don't even need to have access to the dark net

        • Being offered drugs for free and getting addicted is very true, but saying someone got discounted gear to try, then got price jacked… That's stupid.

Drug dealers are a dime a dozen and offer lower prices so you don't buy from someone else. If they raise the prices, the customer will just go elsewhere.

        • +1

@Crowdedthehouse: You may not be familiar with the cocaine market in London. Cheap first few tries then jacked high prices if you suddenly want more.

        • @Hybroid:

Quite the opposite. If you buy more, it becomes cheaper.

    • +3

This is how people get hooked on everything. Drugs are not special in this respect.

I can guarantee you the sales technique preceded drugs by millennia (alcohol excepting perhaps).

      • Yep. Its no different to companies offering free samples or Dare chocolate milk at railway stations etc. Give it out free (or heavily discounted), and get them hooked so they continue to buy, even at full price.

    • My old butcher used to pop in alittle something extra because I was there buying things after work twice a week. Like β€œhey you tried the Rissoles?” And then they would put a couple in to get me to try it.

      • Did it work?

  • +1

Things are usually going on sale/discounts. So just wait lkl

  • +11

This happens quite often. I generally will only try new products if they are on special or a freebie.
I once tried dental tape, now can’t go back to dental floss.

    What butcher was this?

  • +35

IIRC, I've never done this. My diet revolves around whatever's marked down at my local supermarket, be it chicken drumsticks, beef mince or lamb chops.

    • +263

exactly the same. i eat whats half price. i had party pies tonight, and cat food last week

Sirena Tuna. I used to buy Coles/Woolies brand but now they taste horrible compared to Sirena

    • +3

They are regularly on sale tho

    • +3

But You can just buy bulk quantities when it is on sale, it keeps for ages, you should not have to pay full price.

    • All you need to do is buy enough to last you 3 months till the next sale.

      • more like 3 weeks!

    • +3

Sirena is the best tuna, no matter what John West claims.
Always stock up when on special.

      • +2

callipo > sirena, actually from Italy instead of thailand

        • +1

          Or Rio Mare!

      • Sirena is definitely higher quality, no doubt about that. I often eat tuna + brown rice for lunch, used to always be sirena but lately I like mixing 1 can of sirena and 1 can of good ol john west mush. Sirena has more protein and is chunky, john west has a wider variety of flavours - so you get the best of both worlds.

Greenseas is probably the worst though.

    • costco sometimes has it cheap AF

    • not enough mercury additive?

  • +23

Sorry, I only ever buy items on discount. Even when I really want it. This is ozbargain not ozrrp!

Got Netflix free for 3 months from a Qantas deal - now I'm paying $10 a month.

Condoms. The freebies just aren't good πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

      But that's a once-in-a-2-year-only purchase though isn't it?

      ;)

      • -3

Yes. I buy them in bulk when they're on special.

First bought 2 pairs of Swell brand tracksuit pants at 70% off from Surfstitch. Lost a lot of weight and now buy them at whatever price to celebrate.

Don't take my ozb card. It's an outlier!

    • Is swell good quality?

      • IMHO, not overly, probably slightly better than Kmart but less than your average surf brand. It's basically surfstitchs homebrand equivalent.

  • +9

Does using qantas lounge invites instead of selling them count as the same thing?

  • +5

    $5 versus $6.50 isn't much….

    • 25% increase isn't much?

That $1.25 is better spent on Eneloops.

The problem here is OP is purchasing an inelastic good, he'll probably buy it even at $10. Needs to find himself a second source and get some competition going.

      • +2

        30% increase.

        • 30%

Yeah that. Got distracted by the $6.

      • +3

Yes that's not much. If you're happier with one thing, and the thing stopping you getting it is $1.50, then that's never much.

      • Hey mate, I sometimes see people like you use economic terms "inelastic", and so on. Did you study some sort of Economics at school/uni or do you just pick these terms up over time?

I'm 24 and looking to improve my vocabulary, any tips?

        • read books. inb4 name checks out.

        • Did you study some sort of Economics at school/uni or do you just pick these terms up over time?

School was a while back but yeah, I remember elastic\inelastic from there.

The rest is mainly from reading rather than watching TV.

Helps that I do a lot of contract work; IT but the area could be anywhere from a bank to construction to medical to retail. You pick up a lot from changing jobs, even if for the first week you've no idea what these people are on about. Everybody has their own jargon.

Aside from that don't dismiss things as not worth knowing, everything comes in handy (oh yeah, that's kinda like that other thing). I don't care for cricket but knowing how many ways a batsman can be dismissed can win you bar bets, even against the 'experts'.

  • +3

Subway has done this to me a few times. Especially the sub of the day promotion.. it got me in to try some other stuff at full price.. I mean domino's does the same thing to me over and over again. Usually I'll be good and get the value range but sometimes they bring out some good deals and I can't just resist. Delivery is my ultimate weakness especially since no other place around me delivers after 9pm. So if I'm super tired or feeling lazy.. yeah.

    • If there are no current specials at dominos then i can usually find something better for the same price as full priced pizza prices there. I might even go the other local pizza shops as a treat.
I could never pay for delievery. Thats money for more pizza i could be eating.

    • Deliveroo, Ozfoodhunter, Uber Eats, Menulog, Eatnow, Foodora. Surely someone delivers to you?

My ozbargain premium membership. At first it was a free trail but the deals were so much better that I ended up paying full price to keep it.
