  • This is an excellent deal, but jump on it, as it's not a year-round offer from MS.

(I got my family pack a year ago from Good Guys for $200.)

No excuse for pirating when they have offers like this.

No excuse for pirating when they have offers like this.

no need for buying it in the first place when lots of nice free linux distros are available :)

      • +4

That would require you to want Linux, though…

Even OS-X is only $39 RRP ($32 with EPP)

        • $39 for a service pack?

          ducks

    • Yes there is an excuse, you still need a genuine licence of a previous OS.

  • Officeworks had this back then too, so -5%. Might still stock it now.

    • I can confirm I bought this product from OfficeWorks Mandurah (WA) last week for the same price.

Just be sure to "upgrade" rather than install on a new hard disk as this can cause problems with the CD key being validated.

There are ways around it but it's a PITA

      • I wouldn't call changing a registry value, or simply installing the operating system twice, "A Pain in the ass"
Or you can just install it with no cd key at all, then ring the automaed prompter for activation.

      • I bought it from OW on Monday for the same price, but today the price on the OW website is back to $245.

        • I left it too late and missed the OW price. At least now I can still buy it cheaper from OW with there 5% price match guarantee, after finding this deal from The Good Guys.

Is there a similar deal for Windows 7 Professional? I need the "Windows XP Mode" feature for a couple of apps.

    • also remote desktop is a big one thats pretty handy. users are easier to manage… for the average user home is good though, got it for my dad, im the only one that notices when i go up there though.

      • Can patch the termserv.dll on Home Premium to allow remote desktop - http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/t/79427.aspx

      • +1

You can use the free "Team Viewer". My brother fixed my Dad's computer remotely using it.

      • yeah i just use the remote assistance, just means i have to get him to give me the number and accept the connection…but thanks for the tips on the others, that awesome.

  • No 'Family' pack for Professional, you get slogged the upgrade fee.

Also if you have the license for Windows XP retail you could use something like Virtual Box, which is free.

  • Can you install this on a newly built PC? Or do you need to install some previous version of Windows in order to be able to upgrade?

    • I know with the windows 7 pro upgrade you can, so I'd assume it would be the same with this.

Having avoided Vista like the plague, I upgraded xp machines with this, which requires a full re-install. That didn't even blink on install. If you have problems I think you just try to reinstall again and it works. As mentioned there are some basic work arounds out there.

    • I'm curious about this too… how do they handle the "Upgrade" these days? I remember back in the days of Windows 95 and 98, the setup of the new O/S (the Upgrade version) made you put in the disc of the previous version as proof…

      • Yea you don't need to do that with windows 7, AFAIK the upgrade is just the same as the full version. When I format my pc, I always choose custom installation and it works fine.

        • -1

from CPL (melbourne computer shop), the upgrade and the OEM are the same thing, so you you may only be albe to install it on one machine, eg if you upgrade the license stays with the last machine.) that said you can usually call microsoft and they unlock it like they did with xp…

To do an upgrade, you must run it from an existing windows installation. i.e. you can't boot off the dvd and install an upgrade version onto a clean fresh computer.

well … technically you can (you can install vista and w7 without a cd key - there's a 30-day grace period), but the upgrade key won't activate a freshly-installed w7.

However, once you've done the first unactivated install, you can insert the dvd again and 'upgrade' that installation. The key will then activate. Not sure if you have to start from a lower version like W7 basic, but you might as well!

    • I have installed it on a clean HDD several times - sometimes it wanted a previous install, others it didn't. There are workarounds on the web that aren't too hard to find, however.

    • Easy. Boot off the disk and clean install it, try the serial, some times it may work and activate a clean install, most times it won't.
If it doesnt, pop in the disk again and then do an 'upgrade' from your unactivated version of W7. It works.

  • How does this compare to the price of a single Win7 64bit Pro purchase at the moment?

  • is it possible to buy from http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/products/offers-family-… at a lower price?

    • Thats US

    • Don't see why not!!!

Theres a download option where MS send you the keys and you just download the software. With the current exchange rate, it actually works out cheaper buying it from the MS website.

    • +2

No you can't buy from the US store, as the input address for your billing details do no allow for Australian addresses and thus will be canceled.

I tried to 'trick' it, as the price was cheaper in the US with the exchange rate, but the order was canceled.

      • That's what I was wondering - thanks.

  • Can I use this upgrade pack on DELL or HP's version of Windows XP?

    • yes, but it's a clean install so you lose everything.

  • I looked at using the upgrade to do a clean install a few months back.. never got round to buying it >< but these are the pages that I found helpful:

It's a good price for an Aus retailer but as some have pointed out it is cheaper in the US. I bought this pack while I was there a few weeks ago and paid around $130 USD.

For anyone looking to buy overseas you can get it from Amazon for $124.99 USD. Buy it through your favorite remailing service and have it shipped. I'm guessing that it would work out a bit cheaper even with postage and service charges etc.

    • I did the same thing when Win 7 came out. :)

  • Why does anyone bother with Home Premium when you can get Microsoft Technet Standard subscription for $199 and receive 10 unique activations of Windows 7 (all editions excluding Enterprise) and Office 2010 (Pro Plus & Standard)?

    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/subscriptions/buy.aspx

The only downside is you have to download and burn the DVD/copy the stuff to USB yourself.

    • +2

Software is licensed for evaluation purposes only-not for use in production environments.

    • thats also the US link, got an aussie one ?

  • any idea how we can share this arnd if we only want 1 activation?

  • $160 AU Delivered for US version on Ebay. Arrived within a week.

  • Isn't the US serials region locked somehow? If not then what's a good forwarding company?
Has anyone actually tried price matching the GG price at OW in Melbourne?

    • I got a price match less 5% from OW Sydney no problem, since there price was $198 at the start of the week before it jumped back to $245. But you better jump on it as they usually drop the price back to $198 when they get too many people price matching.
