Metal detectors are looking more fancy these days. How long on average until it pays for itself?

    • +12

One use for me. I’ve used a Kmart one for a while. Then bought this one.

The Dyson cleaned half the room and it was full. And I only used the Kmart one a week earlier.

The Dyson just pulls crap out of the floors nothing else seems capable of. I’ve heard Miele are good also.

      • +2

Agreed. We bought a V6 Dyson (Fluffy) on the eBay sale not long ago. I use the mini motorised head for the two rugs we’ve got in the house and the amount of my partners hair it pulls up is unreal considering you can’t see it on the carpet at all.
Always thought Dyson was just an overpriced brand, but now that we’ve got one I won’t go back to anything else. When this one dies I’ll definitely be buying the V10.

        • +3

in the same boat. Used a V8 Absolute. Never thought i'd enjoy vaccuuming and seeing how much sh*t these machines pull out of the floor! Once you go dyson you never go vax! haha

  • +5

    For those interested, using code PASSWORD from this post, you can pick up a V8 Absolute+ for $680 ($850 - 20%), or a V10 Absolute (not +) for $872 ($1090 - 20%).

(if you're curious, same seller has the V6 Absolute (not +) for $570.48 ($713.11 - 20%); so this Big W deal is good in comparison!)

    • +1

Whats the difference with or without +?

      • +14

        Bigger screen?

        • bluetooth, so you can make phone calls and listen to music

      • +31

The Absolute+ comes with extra accessories
        V8 Absolute
        V8 Absolute+

        Both come with:

        • V8 Absolute
        • Mini Soft dusting brush
        • Combination Tool
        • Crevice Tool
        • Convenient docking station
        • Mini Motorised Tool
        • Soft Roller Cleaner Head
        • Direct Drive Cleaner Head

The Absolute+ comes with (on top of the above):

        • V8 Extension Hose
        • V8 Mattress Tool
        • V8 Accessory Tool Bag
        • V8 Flexi Crevice Tool
        • V8 Up Top Adaptor

Do you need them all? Up to the end user. But bear in mind the accessories all retail individually for $29 and up.

        Edit:
Poking some more around the Dyson store linked at the top of my comment, looks like the V10 only comes in an "Absolute+" version AND the V10 Absolute+ doesn't have come with as many tools at the V8 Absolute+… interesting.

        Edit2:
Noticed that the V8 Absolute+ is listed for $100 less than the V8 Absolute. Mind you that's with a "saving" of $200 on retail, which just so happens to brings its price down so that it's not priced the same as the new V10 Absolute+.

Upvoted you purely because of your formatting — it was on point and easy to read. Nice one!

        Band 28.

    • U can get the v10absolute+ for &799 I got 2 last week

  • Cheapest I have seen on the absolute.

Will this be online? or in store? also in passed experiences how quick do these deals sell out? what time do they launch?

  • -4

Plenty of good quality ones at Godfreys. Over priced vacuums Dyson.

    • +1

Yeah just about any vacuum will work well for hard floors. However Dyson stick vacuums DC59/V6 onward work well on carpet too. Also the longevity of the batteries is remarkable.

    • Testing has shown that these outperform most 240v vacuums so it is hard to say they are rubbish.
Simple test of using the Dyson after other vac and proving how much extra dust it picks up.

They have a high rpm brushless motor and better design so far outperform higher wattage vacuum with basic inefficient universal motor.

      • +3

Testing has shown that these outperform most 240v vacuums so it is hard to say they are rubbish.
Simple test of using the Dyson after other vac and proving how much extra dust it picks up.

What sort of testing? What sort of vacuum comparison?

They have a high rpm brushless motor and better design so far outperform higher wattage vacuum with basic inefficient universal motor.

High rpm brushless motor is just marketing.

They need to spin fast to make suction so the speed is only there to make it useful.

I posted this as part of a discussion on a previous deal for the V10 but the same arguments apply for the less powerful V6.

The Dyson V10 claims 150 air watts in maximum mode.
A Miele Complete C3 Brilliant does 250 air watts
A Dyson Cinetic is 230 air watts

So that's 60% less suction power than a corded model.

But the rated air watts are in Maximum mode (which a corded model always does)
In standard mode the V6 has 28 airwatts (V7 and v8 are slightly less at 22 air watts) so the V10 will probably be the same.
Thats 90% less suction than a corded model on the standard mode.

Dyson doesnt publish battery life for each mode however the V6 lasted 20 minutes on Standard and 6 minutes on Maximum.
The V10 claims 60 minutes so let's just assume it is triple the battery life across all settings. That means Maximum mode will give you 18 minutes of use on maximum.

If you want the 60 minutes of use you are going to be cleaning with only 10% of the power of a corded unit.

And that is with a brand new battery.
We know that battery life will degrade over time so those minutes will get shorter each use.

        • -1

posted this as part of a discussion on a previous deal for the V10 but the same arguments apply for the less powerful V6.

The counter argument was that fixating on air watts is the equivalent of pixel-peeping.

Given a certain task, more (x) doesn't mean (product y) is better.

If the aim is to take a photo to share on Facebook, a 12MP camera will do just as well as a 42MP camera.

If the aim is to suck dust off a floor, a vac with 50 air watts can do just as well as one with 5,000 air watts.

Of course it depends on your floor. Different people have different usage scenarios. A hard floor won't require much power, deep pile carpet will require more power. Sucking up wood chips will need more power than sucking up household dust.

But the end story is the same - you only need as much power as is needed to get the job done.

In the market for a handstick vacuum to complement the xiaomi robot vac but not willing to pay >300 for one as I have a small apartment.

Get the V6 for 399, or would one of these options be better?
https://www.bunnings.com.au/black-decker-45w-2-in-1-cordless… (I'm leaning towards this one mostly due to price point)
    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/vax-blade-pet-pro-cordless-ha…

Initially I was going to get the $89 corded vac frm Kmart but upon seeing it in person I doubted the longevity of the plastic-ish parts and the size was just too big for our place, so hand stick vac it is.

Dyson just seemed a bit overrated/overpriced to me? Wouldn't mind investing another 100 if it's really superior.

    • +2

The bunnings model is quite chunky. It'll be a dis-incentive to bring it out and tidy up.

      Can't comment on the VAX.

      • Thanks salmon - didn't seem that big in the video but really like the automatic floor detection and being able to compact the dust before disposing seems like a good idea. Will have to rethink this..

    • +4

There seems to be a lot of hype and a lot of happy people with the Dyson V6 Absolute and for that reason, I'll be getting it. I have a Black & Decker stick vacuum, a cheaper model to the one you mentioned, and it picks up a lot of dust but I think it could pick up a lot more. The V6 Absolute would be a significant upgrade to what I have and I can justify purchasing it as I'll be using it daily and I don't use my Miele vacuum as often as I would like because it's big and bulky.

You could spend an extra $100 (instead of an extra $300 normal priced) for a machine that's known to be good, or not spend that extra money if you think one of the other 2 machines is good enough for your home. In saying that, I haven't used any of the machines you mentioned including Dyson but I figured the OZB hype would be there for a reason.

      • thanks tictoc!

    • I got the Dyson V6 (basic model, not absolute or animal extra) for $299 at the last HN sale. Great for cleaning small apartments and fits your budget.

  • +4

Once you go Dyson you never go back, only thing that worries me is the 16 min battery life. Its a much better price point than the better battery life models. I just want it for mid week spot cleaning so i might pull the trigger on this deal. Thanks OP.

    • +8

I went dyson and never came back. Batteries kept dying

      • +2

My Dyson upright has been faultless after all these years.

My cordless has been very convenient. But after only 3 - 4 years of minimal use the battery died and then the powerhead has a clip or something which is designed to fail after a few years. Not worth the cost of a replacement head.

Xiaomi is releasing a cordless vacuum under the Roidmi brand which is $299US from memory. It's meant to compete with the Dyson V8. Might be worthwhile to wait for that.

      • u just need to recharge them and not buy new..

  • +2

Anyone who has seen the AvE tear down of a Dyson vac will know to buy a Miele instead….

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NPTzNJMd19A

    • Thanks for that
      What a crackup

    • +1

      Very enlightening.

TLDR: Effective vacuum, poor build quality.

    • Anyone who has seen the AvE tear down of a Dyson vac will know to buy a Miele instead….

Which cordless Miele should one get? :)

  • -8

    Do not buy a Dyson.

Do not get sucked into all of the bloody marketing.

This is total crap as compared to any other good refuted brand like Electrolux. We bought a Dyson C3 something cable one, my neighbor has a wireless one and it broke in the handle. I know every time we pick up more than very fine dust it keeps getting clogged / hammers and I have to take the screwdriver out unscrew the flexible hose at the end of the tube and unclog the vacuum cleaner. I called Dyson to speak about it and they said they have fixed it in the next model after listening to customers feedback.

I asked what about this one and existing customers they basically said suck it up.

    • +1

Do not get sucked in… Suck it up 😏

    • I asked what about this one and existing customers they basically said suck it up.

      Was, was that a pun?

    • +1

Why neg? it's a good deal money wise

    • For me the Dyson V6 Absolute (with power brush head) did a better job than Electrolux corded (no power head, but much higher suction)

  • +1

Agree with all the comments about avoiding mains-powered Dyson vacs (and bagless vacs in general); they're horribly overpriced, have serious design flaws, and use inferior quality components. However these stick vacs are pretty good so long as you're aware of their limitations (battery size, dust bin capacity) and use them within it, keeping in mind that they aren't designed to replace your main vacuum, just supplement it.

I bought one during the last Big W sale - it was delivered very quickly, would definitely recommend.

    • +1

keeping in mind that they aren't designed to replace your main vacuum, just supplement it.

      That's not what Dyson say

      https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidphelan/2018/03/06/dyson-de…

      • +1

they are saying that about the v10 and even that is only for selected homes and uses. v6 is 110% only supplementary.

    • -1

Hot damn it takes some serious superficiality to spend $400 on a play vacuum. If it can't do the job better than a cheaper machine, how is it worth anything?

      • +1

If it gets used constantly because it's convenient, it's worth double that to me.

  • I have feeling that this vacuum will go Ebay's mega sale?

  • -3

Getting closer to the $27.99 realistic value…

    • lol

  • +1

We got this one from the recent deal just a fortnight ago.
    On the pro side:
    1) light weight body - makes it easy to reach ceiling and other areas which may not be practical with heavier ones
    2) easy to maneuver compared to my old Bosch (mains powered)
    3) going cordfree is a huge plus if you have kids or pets in the house.
    4) really powerful unit. Not sure if other vacs do advertise power in comparable units (air watts) This one can go up to 100 air watts. Not sure how that fares with most other brands but something to keep in mind if you want to compare detailed specs.

    On the cons side:
    1) limited battery time plus charging time can be a concern depending on the size of the house. 15 minutes does suffice 3 bedder townhouse surprisingly. But if it runs out of battery in between, the charging time is 3.5 hrs. And you can't have/swap it with spare battery.
    2) bin capacity is quite small and needs to be emptied/cleaned more frequently but is something you'd expect with unit of this size anyway.

W.r.t. price, without the deal, I'd probably not buy this one. But sounds like a bargain (for those who missed the previous round).
Check out feature comparison between V6, V7, V8 models on previous post.

  • You may say I'm biased as I sell Dysons at work (not big w) but I would never get a V6. The upgrade even to V7 is so much in terms of usability…. if you really need the soft head try to snag a v8 while you can. soon the only option for that will be the v10 and specials will be far and wide (officially retailers are not meant to offer specials on the v10 absolute for the first year so I will be very surprised if you find one that is not online only and an inclusive promo that they forgot to exclude this from)

    • So wanted a V7, so expensive at the moment but.

    • +1

      I just got 2 v10+ bing lee eBay $799

      • Out of curiosity, why did you get 2?

        • +1

In case one runs out of battery while cleaning.

  • My Dyson V6 battery just died. 2 years and 8 months. What's the chance of using Vic consumer warranty law on them to get it fixed for free?

    • Low chance on batteries when they are not part of the warranty to begin with.

      • +2

Surprisingly customer service are sending me a replacement battery under goodwill. I do have another V6 and a V7 on their database, which may have influenced that.

      • They can't decide what is or isn't part of warranty. the product as a whole is in warranty under consumer law.

        • Doesn't the warranty usually exclude batteries as consumables? If that's the case then it is strange that they cannot differentiate it as Samsung smartphones have clearly stated battery warranty is only 6 months. Dyson warranty on battery is not published on their website so you can only find out after buying the product so good luck.

        • @wtfnodeal: Battery can only be classed as a consumable if it is user replaceable (ie not embedded), otherwise it is classed as part of the product and should carry the same warranty as the product.

        • @AtheistPeace: The battery is user replaceable on V6. The are posting me the battery, with instructions on how to remove it from the handle (just unscrew 2 screws) and replace.

  • Any ozbargainers have had experience with this vacuum? Looking to grab one considering you can't really get Dyson's cheap at all

  • I'll watch that video after work, however does anyone know if this could do the job for a small apartment? Only the bedroom is carpet.

Or would I still be better off getting the Miele C3?

    • +2

Yes small apartment should be fine for cleaning in single charge unless you switch to max mode which only lasts 6 mins. Normal mode does a pretty good job typically.

  • Any idea what time the sale will start? Is it at 12.01am on the 31 of May, or would it be when the shops start to open (around 8am)?

  • I was planning on getting this but concerned about the battery failing. Two or so years before it fails seems quite short to me for an expensive product. I would probably use this everyday to spot clean some areas. Thoughts?

  • +1

I'm concerned about the batteries too. Having previously owned a DC30 and finding that Dyson stopped supporting their product after a few years was quite disappointing to say the least. I just checked Dyson AU for spares and while there is a spare battery for the V6 at $85 there are no spares for the V7, V8 and V10. How can they expect to sell a battery powered vacuum for nearly a grand and then not even provide a spare for the one part that is guaranteed to wear out in 3 years or more.

    • I just checked Dyson AU for spares and while there is a spare battery for the V6 at $85 there are no spares for the V7, V8 and V10.

You might have to contact Dyson first. When I was looking for a battery for a DC59, the spares website listed it as out of stock. After contacting Dyson, they sent a direct link to a battery on their spares website which wasn't listed.

They do seem more concerned about getting the product working, rather than selling you spares. The V6 we have at work developed a problem. When you press the trigger, the vac runs for maybe 10 seconds then it shuts down. I assumed it was the battery, but thought I'd contact them first. I explained the symptoms in an email or web form and not long after a lady called me and asked me to do some troubleshooting. Turns out it was a flap that got jammed with dirt which caused the machine to shut down.

I was surprised at the $85 cost of the 46Wh battery. Sony's 16Wh battery for their new A7 cameras costs $119, and LG's tiny V20 battery plus a charger costs $80. I think $85 is a fair cost for the Dyson battery, and I'm happy to pay $85 once every 3-4 years for the convenience of a cordless vac.

FWIW, the DC59 battery pack has six Sony US18650VTC4 30A cells which costs US$40.52 (about $55) delivered from AliExpress.

      • Thanks for that info eug. I hope they support the V6 for a long time yet. I'm also happy to pay $85 every 3-4 years, the problem is when Dyson decides to no longer support their products. I tried all the support options with my DC30 and they simply had no option for me to get a genuine battery replacement. Of course they also warned me against getting a third party replacement which left me with the only option of purchasing a new vacuum. You can imagine I wasn't very happy about that.

Considering how many products use Lithium Ion batteries these days it would be a big step forward to implement some kind of cell replacement system.

        • If they stopped selling the DC59 battery, I suppose you could just get a third party one. You can already get them now, but seeing that a genuine one isn't that much more, you might as well get a genuine one at the moment

Of course they'll warn you against using a third party replacement, all companies will say that. :)

        • @eug:
And rightfully so. I ended up buying 3 third party ones for the DC30 to try to extend its life and 2 failed completely within a year. That was another learning experience. There was a 1 year warranty, but try getting that honoured with a shop based in China. Ebay said they'd investigate but I'm not expecting anything.

I've also had bad experiences with third party iPhone battery replacements. Hence my concerns about the manufacturer supporting their product for more than a few years. I really can't recommend third party battery replacements from my experiences.

        • @Karfaffel: Well, maybe battery repacker would be a better bet then. The Sony cells are readily available.

Having previously owned a DC30 and finding that Dyson stopped supporting their product after a few years was quite disappointing to say the least.

Dyson still lists the battery for your DC30 for $55. Not sure what their stock levels are like though, they might have a different link if you contact them first.

The DC30 was released in 2007 and spare parts are still readily available, at reasonable prices too. That's a pretty good sign.
e.g. the crevice tool is $11 delivered, a crevice tool for a Miele is $14.90 plus $8 shipping.

        • @eug:
Nope, battery is not available if you actually go to order one. It lists it as stock unavailable. I talked with Dyson support about it and they said there was no way for me to get a replacement battery for this model as they have stopped making the batteries and have run out of stock.

They really should update their spares website to reflect what can actually be purchased. It's very misleading as evidenced by your post to have those items there when they can't actually be purchased.

I think it's pretty poor form for a company to discontinue consumables support for a premium product that's 10 years old.

  • It's 31 May, anyone scored one yet?

    • I selected pick up in store.

  • +1

I ordered one at 5am, and just got an email saying ready for pickup at South Yarra. Thanks op.

    • Tried at 9am, none at South Yarra, I had to get delivery.

  • What's the difference between the different V6 models? Why would I choose this for instance over the mini or the animal?

  • +1

Just purchased one with no issues - $9.90 delivery- Thanks OP

  • I have a 3x2 house and am looking for a vacuum. The Dyson brand means big price (not a bad thing), anything anyone would recommend as a budget option for floor tiles + carpets (in rooms)?

    • i bought the bosch athlet from HN yesterday, $298 but reduced to $290 after asking nicely. gave it a test run and seemed to give really good suction on the middle speed and extremely quiet on lowest speed.

      • Isn't Bosch better than Dyson?

        • I bought one for work; they don't seem as powerful as the Dyson V6 (on max) we also still use, but we don't run the V6 at full power anyway. I went with the Bosch as it has a much larger collection bin, and longer runtime at lower power settings.

        • Did a bit of research and found this to be a good alternative if you dont mind the slightly larger frame/less portability - and it is definitely cheaper and like what eug said it has a larger bin and runtime.

        • @cray: which one did you get?

        • @haru: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/bosch-athlet-vacuum-cleaner-…
Got it for 290 picked up but kogan sells this for cheaper if you can wait.

  • I have a corded dyson. Battery models will always need battery replacing. The more times you charge the battery, over the course of its lifetime loses its maximum charge more and more.

    Prefer the corded ones.

  • Hair gets tangled in my V6 every time i use it. I have to open it up and cut the hair using scissors. Also clearing the bin is not easy.

  • Mine lasted 2 years & then everytime hair would get stuck in the motorhead & I have to keep opeing it up & removing hair from near the motor for it to work again. It's not what I expected from a $600 vaccum cleaner, especially when my $49 Kmart one is still going strong after 8 years. Not good quality machines

  • Sold out by the looks of it, out of stock at least for both pickup and delivery

  • Anyone bought one?

    What’s the verdict?

    • Lol, it's out of stock almost everywhere so pretty sure a few bought it.
