Finally time to invest in one of these bad boys

  • +1

    Is this recommended for vegans?

    • +1

Also recommended for cannabals if you like those juicy fingers

    • +2

For root vegetables, I usually just use a pressure cooker to infuse flavours but apparently you could cook leafy veg like bok choy in sv.

    • ahhhhhhhhahahahaha

    • +1

There are better options for veggies.

Great for cooking meat very well.

    • +1

No. Vegetables don't particularly need to.be cooked at a precise temperature. And I found that they break down more often then not in a bad way. Don't bother

    • Yes they're great for veg. add some potatoes and olive oil to the bag - best mashed potatoes.

Also beetroot and carrots are awesome.

  • -2

    Batteries not included ;)

  • -1

    Is it submersible?

    • +2

      Will it blend?

  • +2

I've had one for years. Coupled with a food saver it's awesome. Once you sous vide you won't go back.

  • +2

Got it about a year ago. The app needs your location to find the Anova unit hahahaha. No clue why. Also, the clamp that attaches it to the pot is too loose. Otherwise, it's powerful, quiet, very easy to use without the app. I'd recommend it.

    • +6

I've never had the clamp issue? WiFi can be flakey though. But I tend to use manual controls 9/10 anyway

      • The manual controls on the stick are a PITA for setting the time, works well for the temperature though. I use the application to set the temperature and time when I want to deviate from a particular recipe, much easier.

    • +1

You mean the thumb screw clamp? I have trouble undoing it sometimes because I got a bit carried away tightening it.

    • Ah they may have fixed the clamp then.
Yeah I use only manual control these days. Not connoisseur enough to make multi-stage cooking haha.

  • Are Google home and anova good friends

      • they are, but there is a bug with the iOs app. I opened a ticket with Anova a couple of months ago, they aknowledged the issue(Anova cooker found in Anova app but Google hime can’t find it)but thy haven’t got back to me yet. In the meantime I tried with an old Galaxy phone and it worked fine

      • Damn, I never tried this. Want to now.

    • they pretend to be. Google Home can tell anova to start but not stop.

  • +3

Is it really worth the extra $40 for wifi? does it have any other benefits? I can see the benefits of wifi but i feel like most the time you just set it up before you go to work anyway.

    • I'd also like to know, will do some google sleuthing too in the interim. $109 is pretty hard to pass up though

    • Same here. Well if you want to hook it up to your Google Home then you need Wifi.

    • +2

It's also 900 watts as opposed to 800W for the regular one.

    • +2

wifi really means that its cloud connected. You can check on it with your app while you are out.

      • "Hi Cookie, how's ya day going"

    • It's personal preference. I never use it.

    • +1

I sprung for the wifi one - and don't even use the bluetooth option.

Sous vide is set and forget. If you have done it properly, you just dial in a temp and leave it.

The only possible thing is having it stop because it steamed off the water - but put some glad wrap over the top and this isn't and issue.

      • I bought a plastic container with a lid from a cookery place. We then used the drill attachment you use to cut into doors to put locks on to cut a circular hole for the sous vide then nibbled out a bit for the clamp. I use a big scarf I have to hold in the heat of the base and cover the lot with a couple of towels to keep the heat in from above. I did a 48 hour cook with this and didn't need to top up once. Did a cook yesterday for corn and the water is still warm this evening.

        • +1

I bought an 20 ltr icebox and drilled a hole on the lid and do my sous vide, works like a charm and keeps the water and steam in. The icebox u can get for like 20 bucks.

        • @soyea: any concerns regarding chemicals leeching from the ice box?

        • +2

@Micoa: As long as you use good bags for vaccum sealing that are BPA free then the vessel really does not matter as the contents are sealed in the bag.

      • +2

The ice-bath function is not a gimmick. It will push notifications once the temp rises above the safe level and you can start cooking your food

        • +3

@StoneSin: You obviously have never used/seen a Wifi Anova Cooker but going by your comments here you look very interested about it :)
A 3 second google search will give you the right answer about the ice-bath ;)

        • @GregFiona: there are always trolls, best to ignore them.

        • -2

@GregFiona: Yes. I don't like wasting money on gimmicks.

        • +3

@StoneSin: the only gimmick here is your comments(the…microwave guy…LOL)

        • -3

          @GregFiona: Thank you.

      • +4

How's it a gimmick? I put my food in there in the morning with some ice, then fire it up when I'm a few hours from home. Can't do that without Wi-Fi.

You may not use the function, but it doesn't make it a gimmick if others do.

    • +3

      Yes, I use it.
Turn it on from work, use an ice bath and once it hits 5C turn it on.
      I LOVE the wifi function.

    • +1

I got the Wi-Fi and I use it, however it's far from necessary.

  • +2

Okay, a quick google convinced me that Wifi is worth the splurge. Put steaks in ice water bath in the morning, turn sous vide on via wifi remotely at 3pm, get home to perfect steak.

    Sounds brilliant to me!

      • What kind of timer turns on your cooker for you?

        • -6

The one for 'turn on cooker'.

        • @StoneSin:

Does the app have a timer for this? What would I need?

        • -1

@Morien: Buttons don't come with apps unfortunately.

        • @StoneSin: The timer might supply power to the unit when it switches on, but without wifi you still have to physically start the thing up by pushing a button.

        • -1

@Boodek: No. That's not how a turn on timer works.

      • Not everyone knows what time they are getting back from work.

        • -1

So why set up your food let alone in an ice bath then?

        • @StoneSin: so.it.doesnt.go.bad. Anymore.brainbusters buster?

      • No, timer won't help as you can't see what temperature the water bath is sitting at.

Don't want to come home to a bag of food poisoning

        • Do you not know what a temp sensor is?

    • it is, it;s a great feature

  • i had one of these, no idea what it was ,sold it for $50 on gumtree

    • +7

I just came here to see what it was, still unsure, so I might as well reply to your comment.

        • +7

          Oh god, not you again.

        • -4

@Munki: Glad you remember me. It's pretty obvious that people who have already bought this will keep repeating to justify their purchase on here. And I'll keep reminding them they don't have to.

          :)

        • +12

@StoneSin: You also said this cooks things like a microwave, so I'm pretty sure nobody will listen to your insane ramblings.

        • +2

@Munki: someone doesn't have the ability to cook a good meal with this simple to use device, and is therefore salty. NOTE: i am not referring to you

        • -4

@tanay019: No need to call Munki silly.

        • +1

@Munki: LOL, the microwave conversation!!! now I remember who StoneSin is! Don’t waste your time guys

        • -1

@GregFiona: Yeah. I laugh knowing you guys don't understand how heat works too.

        • @StoneSin:

I laugh knowing you guys don't understand how heat works too

Could you explain how heat works for everyone's educational benefit? or provide some links?

        • -1

@gummibear: I'm sure someone else here will be more than happy to link to what they're talking about.

  • -1

PM their page on facebook to get a code for further $30 off. I did mine before this promotion so not sure if will stack, but probably worth to try

    • Anything further to this? Do I have to ask or say something specific?

      • +2

Their fb ad is always advertising "up to 30% off". I just enquire about that and was given a code

        • @djprima

          "was given a code"

Hey djprima, how long did they take to respond and was it a single use code ? This would make it a can't miss deal for sure.

        • +1

@cruiseronroad: responded during the day or the day after can't remember. And its a unique code

        • +3

          @cruiseronroad: I just got a response:

“Hi there! Thanks for reaching out. There is no coupon code required to take advantage of the promotional pricing. 😄
Our website will reflect the new discounted price. Happy shopping!”

Best we’re gonna get by the look of it!

        • @bern1992:

Just got the same reply ! Ah well it's still a great buy at this price !

    • What was your code? Might be a universal code that everyone can use.

      • -1

Tried that and its not valid anymore

  • I use this for all my steaks now. After cooking with this I just sear it on the BBQ for 30 secs each side and perfect steaks cooked evenly all the way through.

I never use the WiFi either.

    • -5

How long do you cook your steaks for? I thought steaks were meant to be cooked lightly. Isn't it inefficient to load this machine up, get it going and then turn it off just to load another up and do the same?

      • An hour and yes. Why? Are you anti sous-vide or just this device?

        • -2

          Seems inefficient to me.

        • +3

Fair enough. If your goal is to reproduce results then I would say this is more effective. If you want efficiency use a solar BBQ.

Also if you want to achieve greater efficiency think about what you post and if it doesn't value add positively or negatively it's probably not worth typing. Based on what I see you could probably free up some of your time.

          note- I'm not negging you

        • @bxpressiv: >Also if you want to achieve greater efficiency think about what you post and if it doesn't value add positively or negatively it's probably not worth typing.

That is already in the sequence of decisions I undergo before posting.

          note- I'm not negging you

No worries. Those votes are irrelevant.

    • +1

Yep, I'm same. Steaks are now only ever done by SV and searing - perfection.

    • Hi thanks for your info. May i ask how you adjust the meat level (rare/medium)? By varying sous time or searing time?

      • Cooking temperature dictates how well done your steak will be, the time won't change. The app will show you all the temperatures and times for the different proteins. The sear should be at the highest heat so it only seals the outside and doesn't really cook it any further.

  • 10/10 recommend
