LG G6. Great phone, great cameras, great headphone DAC, SD card support and water resistance. Ships with Nougat, but Oreo has just started rolling out (mine got it yesterday). $419 may be a historical low for this phone.

  • Anyone else with Aus stock got Oreo yet? It was apparently released, but no sign of it yet on my Aus stock G6,.

    • Have you tried using LG Bridge software? The OTA to the phone is rolling our slowly AFAIK but you can get it instantly if you install LG Bridge on your PC and connect your G6. Mine kept saying "You are running the latest OS" when checking on the phone itself, but LG Bridge found the update, downloaded it and updated my phone to Oreo. • My LG G6 bought from AllPhones has been upgraded to Oreo 2 days ago through OTA.

      • what carrier?

mine says last update november2017 and keeps saying i'm running the latest…which is just not true!

My Samsung S6 Edge is on its deathbed. I'm not up to date on the latest phones, but I don't really want to spend $1k on flagship Samsungs or the like.

Looked at the mid-range smartphone poll, and this doesn't appear on there. How would something like this stack up against my old S6, and equally against a Nokia 7 Plus?

    • +1

So many choices these days, it is hard to pick between a previous generation flagship (like the G6) and a current generation mid-range (like the 7 Plus). I'm not sure which I would choose today, but I did own an S6 (non-edge) and I now own a G6 and have found it a very solid phone. I really like the dual camera setup with wide-angle, which I use much more than I expected, plus great headphone output, and battery life for me has been great compared to the S6. You may have other priorities and by many accounts the Nokia is a great phone too.

This phone ranked 2nd in last year's Flagship phone poll. Most people seemed to think it was a good phone, and personally, I think it's a pretty good value proposition.

This phone was released early in 2017, so while it does sound like 'old hardware' with it's Snapdragon 821, it still has enough features (e.g tall aspect ratio, Quad DAC, IP68 rating) to make it competitive with some mid rangers like Nokia's, Motorola's and Xiaomi's.

The problem is updates. You can forget about anything past Oreo. That's part of the reason why I bought a Galaxy S8, because it's very likely these will get Android P.

The Galaxy S8 however is still quite expensive, going for $600~700 depending on the model.

      • It feels slower than my previous S6 in even web browsing, and the camera for quick snaps is definitely worse.

The only good things are wide angle lens, Quaddac and price.

I honestly wish I got the S8 instead. But at this price, it's OK.

        • +2

I'm not very sure if web browsing got to do with processing speed.

  • The SD821 is really showing it's age now against the Snapdragon 636s.

Only reason to buy this if for the network compatibility and the HDR compatible screen.

    • +2

Well, there's also waterproofing, oled, fantastic build + form factor, Quad Dac, and wide angle lens.

The SoC is nowhere near as important as it use to be. Granted, the 636 is RIDICULOUSLY efficient for its processing power.

      • Where is the OLED last I checked it was an IPS panel.

  • +1

The concerning thing about LG phones is once they hit this age they stop getting updates. Seen it with the G4, and G5. They just stop altogether. But if you don't care about having the latest security patches or Android version then they offer good value.

Great phone, great peice, been using it for a while and it is just awesome!

  • I currently got S7 edge don't think this would be a good buy but would V30 be better?

    • Why not an S8+? It's cheaper than the V30, and honestly, are just a better phone.

V30 came out far too late, so it hasn't have enough time to get the massive price drop that LG phones tends to have.

      • I don't want another Samsung and S8+ is pretty much the same. Unless you get S9 plus

  • I have the same model.

Good phone but it doesn't work with Android Auto (2018 Kia Sportage).

Wife's old Nexus 5X works fine.

    Apparently it's a common problem with G6.

    • +2

That's strange. My G6 works perfectly with Android Auto in SantaFe and i30, which I would guess uses similar (Motrex) infotainment system to Sportage. It was fussy with needing a good quality USB cable, but now works perfectly.

      • Weird… do you have the H870DS model?

I tried a few cables. My wife's Nexus connected straight away.

Mine stuffed around and eventually an error comes up saying something like "Error initialising Android Auto….).

Tried everything I could think of. Gave up after a while.

        • Yeap, I have the H870DS and I've never really had a problem with AA except it would crash regularly if using a cheap cable, but I don't think that is specific to the G6.

  • Just bought one. Anyone recommend a decent thin cover?
I'm after something thin an protective.

    • One of those $1 clear silicone covers from eBay.

      • I have the worst track record with cracked screens. I'll need more than that,

  • +8

I've said it before and I'll say it again. My wife bought a phone from here. Dead within a week. They refused to warrant it without us sending it back at our own cost, which we did. Then they said it wasn't warranty but wouldn't give a reason until we pressed it. Then they offered to send us a different phone (of lesser value). At this point we had to buy a different phone. They were horrible to deal with an eventually we had to write off the $600 spent on the phone because they simply refused to do anything for us.

    • Yep that sounds like a really shitty seller

"Technical delays" is the response from several message, think it means we didn't have any stock buy happy to have your money.

    • Did you buy from them?
I just received this message. I'm thinking of asking for a refund.

"We are sorry to inform you that our supplier requested us to return the items back to them for quality check as they found issues with the item. They are sending the replacement to us in the beginning of this week.
Your parcel will be dispatched by Express Shipping after we received the replacement. The delivery time will be 4-6 business days.
We sincerely apologize for the issue and inconvenience caused. Thank you for your understanding."

      • +1

Yes, same bs message, I'm going to request my monies back, they clearly haven't got and probably can't locate stock at the right price to fulfill orders. . .

  • Just chatted with eBay, no go with them though they did say the seller has auto reply turned on (surprise) might claim via PayPal tonight …
