Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2 eReader - $175.96 @ Myer eBay

PICK20MYER

Really wanted my next ereader to be waterproof and always been a Kindle guy. Reviews on their new Oasis are poor and the price is steep. Noticed this Kobo which looks ace and this price seems pretty sharp so guess I'm a Kobo guy now!

Having a bigger screen than kindle paperwhite is nice. Plus it can read epub files as well!

I can get H20 out of the tap. #jvjokes

    • Nailed it

  • you can also borrow books from Libraries with Kobo but not Kindle

    • Q: can you do that directly from the device or do you still need a PC to transfer?

      • you'll have to go through your local library's eCatelogue, think every council is different but most use OverDrive/Libby

        https://help.overdrive.com/customer/portal/articles/1481734-…

        • Yep understand that. From the link it looks like you can browse and borrow from the library catalogue directly from the device right?

Only asking coz US rules might be different. Apparently in the US the kindle can borrow from libraries through overdrive but it’s not allowed over here.

  • Dammit, just bought the kindle paperwhite from ebay, after buying the No No aura 2 from myer with the case. Returning the myer one as ive started using the kindle, but would have preferred the kobo for overdrive.
I'm hopeful amazon will bring overdrive to kindle eventually, much like they have in the US. In saying that, ive emailed ebook mobi files to my kindle piece of cake, so not fussed right now.
    This is a great price.

  • I much prefer this to the Kindle - I had the v1 H2O, dropped it on the bamboo floor once too often, so bought a PW. Just bought this because I can't cope with the PW any longer.

    • Really? My wife has a paperwhite and seems great. Apart from a lack of waterproof what's the other major pros for the Kobo?

I have one Paperwhite (v2 I think), and one Kobo Aura HD (the 8-inch one).

Pros of the Kobo: (1) waterproof (not quite important I think), and (2) big screen. I use that Kobo for reading pdf ebook (after installing Koreader). Wonderful reading because of that big screen.

Cons of the Kobo: (1) the screen is not as great as the Kindle. Although my Kindle was released 3 years earlier than the Kobo, but its screen is much less prone to reflection. I guess that due to that waterproof thing, they have to make the outer layer of the screen to be like the ones on phones, and that contributes to being more reflective. (2) transferring files to Kindle is easier. I just need to email the files, and sync using wifi. With the Kobo, until now I still have to connect it to my laptop. (3) I still feel that navigating the menu on the Kindle is still easier.

Anyway, I'm using my Kobo, and gave the Kindle to my daughter. Allowing me reading pdf ebook is the the decision point for me.

That sounds like theres an actual issue with your screen.

I too have a gen1 H2O Kobo, and my screen is just as matte as any other.
          0 reflections.

I actually chose it, mostly because it was open source; but also because I have a vidion disability, and the LOWER reflections, and better black:white ratio on the Kobo won me over.

Only thing I've found as a con, was that the screen does 'ghost' sooner, (darn e-ink) so I've just set my page refresh to every 3 pages, not 5, and it's all great!

          (2) transferring files to Kindle is easier. I just need to email the files, and sync using wifi. With the Kobo, until now I still have to connect it to my laptop.

          That's super circumstantial :P
I'd certainly say that plugging in the USB cable, and right clicking the book files, Send To > Kobo (D:), is easier.
Compare that to composing an email, attaching files, connecting to a wifi network, syncing.
My Kobo has never been 'online' :)

My only operational complaint, is the delay opening a book, but once it's open, page flipping and dictionary lookup is quick!

          I'd get an H2O again!

  • Note a new Kobo is about to be released which is HD: https://www.engadget.com/2018/05/29/rakuten-kobo-clara-hd-e-…

    • Not waterproof and negligible dpi uplift

Edit - it's also the same price accounting for USD/AUD

  • Out of stock when you finally go to pay.

  • They are back in stock.
