  • This is 2.5" drive?

    • +1

Yes as its USB powered. Being a Seagate its also a standard 2.5" internal sata drive.

      • -4

And being Seagate it will probably fail so you will lose all your data

        • +10

None of my five Seagate drives failed on me. I guess I'm the lucky one.

        • +2

@xiangtan: Likewise for my five. Oh well, a population sample of two is a little bit better than a sample of one 😊

  • Anyone know if the backup plus is 1a or 0.5a?

    • It works on USB 2.0 fine. So 500ma.

  • +2

bought one of the regular expansion drives for $59, estimated delivery is Wednesday 4th July. thanks

  • With 2 Seagate portables not connecting to any PC its a case of no thanks for this brand anymore

    • +1

      Try the wd 3tb. 72.99

      • Is the WD shuckable?

        • Not sure

        • -1

Based on comments from the last time it was on sale, yes.

        • I've shucked a couple of the wd basic (cheapest) drives successfully.

        • +3

No, the usb connector is soldered onto the drive.

      • <Try the wd 3tb. 72.99>

The 3TB one was the one i bought on Monday - arrived yesterday from Amazon AU - (bought with BAND OF BROTHERS BD - $17 - then the $20 off voucher.

Nicely packed box with paper - instead of the crappy parcels coming from the US and UK

      • Link to the deal?

    • I just returned mine for same reason

  • JB hifi has it at the same price of $79 (for existing users)

    https://www.jbhifi.com.au/seagate/seagate-expansion-portable…

  • Also there is 5% cashback from cashrewards. 3TB WD Element is the go. Great value.

  • For those wondering, this works as a "shuckable" drive for PS4. No clicking, no issues so far.

  • looks almost the same thing to me, could anyone give some education for price difference justification?

Here are data sheets for the internal drives of each.

Seagate Expansion Portable - 2TB (Internal drive: ST2000LM003)
      https://www.seagate.com/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/laptop-h…

Seagate Backup Plus PortablE - 2TB (Internal drive: ST2000LM007)
      https://www.seagate.com/www-content/datasheets/pdfs/mobile-h…

I used the following two videos to discern drive model.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEfkstZNREo
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y81dM-s8aTg

It looks like the drive in the Expansion is actually rated for higher transfer speeds whilst the Portable uses a little bit less power and is thinner (and lighter). Portable has 128MB of cache vs 32MB in the Expansion.
I'm sure there's more to it than that, but that's what I got from quickly looking at the two sheets.

If you were going to remove the internal drive to use inside a PC or console, I would say got for the Portable to leverage the larger cache.
As an external drive, both will probably provide much the same experience.

      • Kudos for sharing your research - went with WD - desire or need for SATA

        • Kudos for sharing your research - went with WD - desire or need for SATA

Why? Most Western Digitals don't have a SATA drive inside.

        • @Maverick-au: edit: no need or desire for SATA (so not an issue for me )

        • @psych23:
Even if you don't intend to pull the drive out, as soon as your purchase it, having a proper SATA drive inside is still nice to have.
I've seen many people who have ruined the micro USB port on an external hard drive (usually due to carelessness). Having a SATA interface on the hard drive makes it much easier to recover the data. Just pull the drive out and stick it in an external dock/caddy.

If you look after your gear (and have backups), it shouldn't be an issue.

That makes sense now, I thought you wanted SATA.

  • I just bought a WD Blue 1TB internal HD on eBay for $48… I've already got a couple of external HDs and figured another internal HD would be more convenient/faster/cost effective, but after doing some reading it seems like its none of those things… :(

    • 7200rpm SATA3 vs 5400rpm USB3
    • No 4GB file size limit without reformatting
    • Higher build quality / longer warranty

Enough to justify getting another internal drive or have I ripped myself off?

  • +1

    Finally ordered one at $59…

  • Price is $109 before discount now

  • Ah man looks like I'm too late, anywhere else with cheap 2TB+ drives?

  • WD 2TB is $108 delivered at Amazon: https://www.amazon.com.au/WD-White-Passport-Portable-Drive/d…

or Seagate 2 TB Backup Plus Slim back at JBs is $119 https://www.jbhifi.com.au/seagate/seagate-backup-plus-slim-2…
