For students with a email address at most Australian uni's or tafe. List provided on site.

This is a steal; I got the Home edition last year for the same price with this deal. Now it is Window7 Pro.

Pick this one up if you haven't already upgraded. Also in regards to Microsoft office, Microsoft sometimes offers extremely very very low prices for corporate employees to buy MS office. It is worth hitting up your IT guy at work if they know that deal is on.(Microsoft Home Use Program)

Note: This is an upgrade version, but it can be installed on a system that hasn't previously run another operating system. Very easy, but I will let google find that solution for you.

Hmmm I guess my theory on Win7 dropping to $50 for a short while before/during each semester holds true.

Maybe this time I'll actually make use of it.

  • +1

Yea I don't know, I just brought another PC and was searching to see if last years deal was still available. Still works out well, wish it was 7Ultimate though(don't know why)

    • +3

Where did you bring your other PC to?

  • +4

As an engineering student, I get the legal Windows 7 for free. Most students aren't even aware of this. Ask your campus about it.

    • -5

It will expire once you complete your degree (since it's MSDN) unlike this however.

      • I was told we would not receive updates once my degree was finished but will continue to work fine.

        • -1

Microsoft will never stop sending important updates(Win7), even if you have a pirated version. They do not want there operating system crippled with viruses like XP.

      • +6

Hirokuro, You are incorrect… MSDN & Technet keys never expire.

Meaning, If you dont renew your MSDN or Technet account, the keys that you generated during your subscription period will never expire even if you have never activated them.

    • starting this this year. I shall enquire :o

If you are Melb Uni IT/CS, you can usually get this for $10 from the MUCSA office. I bought that for myself then got an extra $50 version for my brother's PC.

    • Doesn't seem like MUCSA is selling Windows 7, though.

      • Really? Lame. Get on their back about it. They have some kind of student alliance with MS, so they should be able to get more in. My copy of win 7 pro came from them.

  • +2

At RMIT you get this for free. They charge for you to borrow the CD but you can just choose to download the CD Image from teh campus. We had Windows 7 Professional (32 and 64 bit versions) a few months before it hit retail, was great.

Keys never expire, even after you leave uni. Of course once you leave uni you will not be able to log into MSDNAA anymore.

    • This is only if you study certain courses not for all students.

    • Hook a brother up. Message me.

I suspect its only for the people doing IT or business though, hope i'm wrong.

      • construction student are getting it ;D

    • +1

The $50 price hasn't been and it doesn't matter if it's for the minority, it's still a deal for some

    • +4

      a) The price of this varies. I remember a few weeks ago seeing win7 pro for $99 there. Thus, it is useful to have notification of when it reduces in price back to this price. (MS seems to like switching between the 2 a lot)
      b) You don't (well by the sounds of things you might but you shouldn't)neg deals that are pickup only in Alice Springs if you live in anywhere other than Alice Springs. This is a good deal for anyone who can use it and as such deserves a pos not a neg…

Perhaps you should read through on some guidelines for negging.

Ed: note also as per the deal's description, they are currently offering win7 pro, whereas some of the time it is win7 HP

      • Pretty sure its $119 when not at $50.

        • lol idk. but you get the general idea :)

      • Same here I too noticed the $99 tag and moved on but now it is a good deal.

  • Thanks

    Obtaining Product Keys:
Product keys will be provided on the purchase confirmation page and sent to the user's eligible educational institution email address entered into the Promotion web site during the purchase process. Product keys will be available for 2 installs for a desktop and mobile device.

    • They say that, but when it fails to reinstall you can just call the support line, read the guy a code and he will activate it for another install. It's a hassle but it stops it from being mass used, whilst you are generally able to get the uses you need out of it.

      • oh I meant you can do 2 installs, pretty good for $50.

    • 2 installs? Does that mean for 2 devices or two fresh installs before it expires?

      • It's probably like the family pack where one key can do multiple installs before it prevents activation.

      • you will get 2 serial keys, one x64 and one x86. Both will work for either but you can only use each one on one activated computer at one time. (so you will be fine using both and reformatting as often as you like)

        • -1

Not true. I purchased this deal a while back and chose the 32-bit version, then changed my mind. They then let me download the 64-bit version as well and just told me to use the same key - it works perfectly fine too, all legit.

  • Does anyone know if you work at a university and have a university email address, do you qualify even though you're not a student?

    • Yes.

    • +1

Some universities give copies to staff for free. Contact your IT department to find out if they offer this.

    • Yes, in the last offer I bought 2 copies of both x86 and x64, since I have a staff number and a user name email address.

While these are great deals and I recommend them, last time I took advantage of them, I paid my money and tried to install Win 7 only to be told that it was not compatible with my (less than one year old) laptop.

So I had to go and acquire Win 7 Ultimate elsewhere - which worked without any dramas.

    • Do you know what made it incompatible? I didn't think anything but a very well aged pc would have compatibility issues :/

      • yeha i had vista home premium 32 bit version on the laptop when i bought it and win 7 pro wouldnt upgrade or it was 64 bit - one of those two reasons.

        • It's because you can't upgrade a 32bit Operating System to a 64bit OS. You have to do a clean install if you are wanting to go to 64bit.

If the installation of Vista was 64bit, upgrading to 64bit could be done.

    • +1

Why would ultimate work and pro wouldn't?

      • +1

        Haha yeah
        that's weird

    • The 32 bit version should work on just about any hardware including really old pc's and laptops. I have it currently installed on a 5 yr old P4 pc at home. It is the 64 bit version of Windows 7 which is a bit fussy as the CPU requires the 64-bit instruction set in order to run the 64 bit software.

Modern CPU's lacking the 64 bit instruction set are the early/low end Atoms and Celerons. To check for 64 bit compatibility for intel cpus check http://ark.intel.com for more detailed info.

      • Even the latest Atoms are x64…..

    • +1

less than 1 year old? i installed win 7 premium 32bit on my sis laptop, it was almost 8 years old and now it flies faster than XP did.

  • Awesome! Thanks OP!! I've been checking this site over the last few months waiting for it to come down in price and thought it would never happen.

    • +5

Not every uni/tafe student is able to get it for free (or cheap) from their uni/tafe.

    • +1

I would say the students who can get it for free would be a small minority of students, probably in a minority of universities.

    • +1

Flawed logic. It's like employees negging deals on here because they can get better staff rates. You can't neg a deal on that basis

  • So this is a $25 saving right? From memory the price used to be 75 for windows 7 upgrade.

This deal came at the right time…. thinking of building a new desktop in a few months.

    • Only $75 price I remember is for Office 2007 and for a very short while Office 2010. Now its $99.

Windows was (as far as I remember) always either $50 or $119.

  • For thsoe that arent Uni/Tafe students any more you can see if your alumni offer an email address. In my case i was able to easily get a university.edu.au email adress which is all you need to get this deal.

  • So which uni courses get you the free copies?

And what other deals are there for students?

    • Usually only engineering or IT faculties get access to it. I've yet to come across anyone in any other faculties that got it free or even more heavily discounted than this.

  • For those of us like me doing medicine, you can get it free from MSDNAA

    • If you do have a msdnaa account, make the most of it by getting all the windows versions available. So if you have vista grab the download too… because once you graduate they close your msdnaa account, and you won't have the chance of getting it again.

it comes in handy because even though vista is outdated, the license key can still be used for future upgrade versions of windows.

Thanks! Just bought the Win7 Upgrade.

I purchased Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010 for A$15 through my office. It was part of the Microsoft Home Use Program — got a special link from our IT dept for it. Maybe worth checking out?

    • Thing with that is the HUP program requires a code that is specific to each company + and will only work if you enter the correct code that has a company email (i.e. company domain)
So the HUP isn't publicly open =\

    • Hahahaha! You took the exact words out of my mouth! (well, off my fingertips!)

I'm in the same situation and now have both Win7 & Office 2010 PLUS ready to be installed on my new HD.

I just need to arrange for the transfer of NIS license and we're good to go!

  • Cheers mate.

  • Since I am not a student, can I ask my friend to buy 1 for me?

    • +2

It's probably against the T&Cs somewhere. But technically, you can. Whether or not you should is another matter.

  • Wait, does "upgrade" mean you must have Windows 7 already installed? Can I buy this only and install it on my box that's currently running Vista?

    • +2

It means you are meant to have an old OS installed first, so installing it from Vista is what you are meant to do!

However, you don't have to have an operating system installed first. I downloaded the Pro Version last year on a blank machine with a fresh install, and have been using it unactivated for a year. I decided to buy it with this deal, simply changed one item in my registry, put the code in, and it worked.

If you google 'windows 7 upgrade clean install' there are a number of ways to do it, some even supported by Microsoft.

  • I got a copy (Win 7 Professional full 32 & 64 bit) free of charge as a student of engineering.
I know this is for RMIT and Monash. not sure about other Unis

  • What makes me unhappy is the fact that if I need 32 bit and 64 bit I have to make 2 orders not like one instance that will ask you wether you want to install 64 or 32. My laptop recovery has thay option where I can select either. WOuld be nice to have this option here.
