  • Looks like version 1. This is only 720p and non-removable battery. The more expensive version 2 has 1080p and removable battery. Neither supports Homekit AFAIK.

    • Yes it is version 1. Version 2 is still $322 on Amazon.

    • Yeah it's a V1.

    • lol so when the battery runs out u have to throw it out?… wtf?

      • +28

Or you recharge it, if you still want to throw it out let me know where and I will pick it up :)

        • haha just made it sound like some weird one use thing… :P

        • +1

          @scud70:
I have the V1. To be honest it depends what you are using it for. Generally, you shouldn't have tons of people coming to your house daily so the battery should last months :) But yeah, since they have a V2, people should get the V2 if they don't want to hardwire it

        • @lyon: awesome thanks for that … was wondering what the battery time on it is..

      • You can hard wire it I think.

      • +1

Just wire it in to your current doorbell circuit. Then you don't need to worry about the battery.

      • And surely even when the battery dies it has a replaceable rechargeable battery.

        • Sure, just like your phone

    • +2

      To charge your Ring Doorbell:

Remove the security screw on the base of the doorbell and lift the doorbell up and away from the mounting bracket.
Connect any micro-USB charger to the charging port in the back of the Ring unit (an orange one comes inside of your Ring box).
Your battery is fully charged when the circular light on the front on the Ring is a solid blue circle.
Reattach the Ring unit to the mounting bracket using your security screws.
After about 30 seconds (time for the Ring Doorbell to start up) test your Ring doorbell by pressing the button on the front.

    Does this require monthly fees?

    • +1

Cloud storage for all Ring products require monthly or annual fees.

      • +1

That was the deal breaker for me when I was looking up video door bells.

        • What other comparable products are there in the video door bell market?

        • @Lorindor: there was a few but I didn’t like any of them. Skybell HD was on par with the ring 2 and has free video recording and got better reviews than ring 2. I ended up getting an arlo video system and have a camera at the front door which also has 2 way communication.

        • @Lorindor: Doorbird is another option. I went with that in the end as it has the option to open the gate via my phone.

        • diy with Hikvision doorbell. Wifi but need power.

  • +1

I have the V1 and very happy with it, I managed to hard wire mine so the battery issue wasn't a big deal for me. I have heard if your internet connection is not great the 1080 will struggle.

    • How much is the yearly fee?

      • You don't have to pay to use it, but if you want to keep the video's of missed motion detection etc it is $40 a year or $4 a month. (That is if you only have 1 ring device, if you have multiple from memory its about $15)

        • Thanks. So does it actually have a chime sound for you to hear inside your house if you don't have your smart phone on you? Also, if I want just live footage + motion detection through the app, there is no monthly fees associated with that?

        • @leeson865: I hardwired mine to my existing door chime, if you don't have one you can buy a wireless chime. There are no fees, but it will not record/store the activity, so if you miss the motion detection you will not know what went on. For $4 a month its worth paying. But if someone rings your door bell you can answer it from your phone.

        • Thanks mate. Which wireless chime did you use?

        • @leeson865: I didn't buy one, but best to buy the Ring one, Amazon might have it?

        • @pommie: found it. thanks for all your help!

    • V1 is 720p not 1080p.

  • I have the V1 and its great. Does the job and for $99 i cant complain.

  • +3

I bought the V1 from Bunnings for the same price a month back and so far very happy with it.

If you don't want to shell out for the Chime, note that it does integrate with Home Assistant reasonably well. I have the Ring doorbell ringing all my Google Home minis and it hasn't missed a beat.

    • Could you please share how you did the integration to the Google home? As far as i was aware, because Ring is owned by Amazon it would only work with Alexa. I looked into IFTTT but didn't seem to have the right triggers.

      • what he said ;)

        • I've replied to nobby.

      • +8

        Here's the short version.

I have Home Assistant running on my NAS. On it, I've added the Ring Platform which exposes:
        * Two binary sensors - one that covers the doorbell ding and the other when motion is detected
        * Other sensors which report battery life, signal strength
        * The camera which shows the last recorded video (requires a Ring sub)

Home Assistant auto-detected by Google Home Minis so zero work was required to integrate them.

Here's what my automation looks like:

        • id: 'ring_door_bell'
          alias: Door bell alert
          trigger:
          • entity_id: binary_sensor.ring_front_door_ding
            from: 'off'
            platform: state
            to: 'on'
            condition: []
            action:
          • data:
            gw_mac: 7811dcb900cf
            ringtone_id: 10
            ringtone_vol: 70
            service: xiaomi_aqara.play_ringtone
          • data:
            entity_id:
            • media_player.classroom_speaker
            • media_player.office_speaker
            • media_player.bedroom_speaker
            • media_player.living_room_speaker
            • media_player.kitchen_speaker
              message: Someone's at the door
              service: tts.google_say

So when the ding binary sensor switches to on (ie. when the doorbell is pressed), it makes a chime sound on my Xiaomi Gateway and says "Someone's at the door" at all my google homes.

        • Does this stop it reporting back to ring at all, of just sits along side the existing comms back to ring?

        • +1

@SBOB: Doesn't interfere with the Ring app - I still get notifications from the app and still use the app to connect to the live view.

        • @evanjd:

Excellent.. Might finally setup the rpi3 I've had lying around for ages to set up Ha-io

Should work just as well on a rpi I assume.

        • +1

@SBOB: Tons of people run Home Assistant from an rPi, I’m sure it’ll be fine.

        • @evanjd: Thanks for putting up those instructions. When I read Home Assistant I assumed you had meant google assistant. I'll look into installing this on my NAS.

    • +1

Would love to know as well

      • I've replied to nobby.

  • anyone matching this deal again?

    Edit: its over, no worries

  • Purchased mine from Bunnings, highly recommend. I hardwired mine with chime and I find it easier to use at night with bright illumination. If your handy I definitely recommend hard wiring.

    • does the white ring stay on all the time?

      • +1

        When hardwired yes

  • Anyone comment on the return policy if not suitable? I want to put one at my front gate but not sure it will work the way I want it to.

    • Why not just sell it on eBay/Gumtree?

      • Easier to return than sell

  • If you are comparing to hardwire doorbell then look at the Skybell doorbell…its cheaper and has no recording fees
    http://www.skybell.com/

    • if you internet is slow, I think you better wait for better internet. Otherwise, it can become just a recorder. Depending on how slow your internet is, you might get just a black screen, or the back of your visitor as they walked away, or just your normal view with no people as they have left, and you cannot practically have any conversation with them. The broadband speed is to blame, not Ring, though.
    • Not sure why, but even if your bell is hard wired, you might still have to manually take the battery out to charge it and it is considered a normal thing, when there are too many activities - how many are too many? It is quite straight forward to remove the battery, though.
    • IMPORTANT: don't place it higher than 1.20m from the floor. Follow the enclosed instruction carefully regarding this point or you will end up having extra hole(s) on the wall due to earlier incorrect installation.
    • if it does not have a normal (AC I think) door bell (usually an existing one), then if your internet is down, you don't have any bell. If it is not installed with a door bell, it needs a resistor and a transformer which might not be included in the purchase - so talk to your electrician first about getting the good old door bell.
    • "wait for better internet" - hahaha

    • 1.2m? This is a doorbell for belly buttons?

      • The lens is kind of fish eye lens, so it enables you to see much more than the belly. If it is higher, chances are it activates when the guy opposite to your house opens his door! Perhaps not that bad but you might answer the door to passing cars!

  • Warning there is a yearly sub from what I watched on YouTube. I wouldn't buy it.

  • I've got one. The two issues I have with it:

    1. No local storage for video, you have to pay a monthly fee for cloud storage.

    2. It doesn't seem to buffer enough video, the recordings don't capture the person approaching the door for me, especially if they approach and press the doorbell fast. I wish it would record 10-20 seconds before activity is detected.

    • +1

I wish it would record 10-20 seconds before activity is detected.

How do you propose it could do that?

      • +1

30 second internal loop buffer, but it would chew through more battery.

        • Yeah some other video doorbells offer buffering and local storage. If you have it hardwired, then the power usage wouldn't matter.

  • +1

Just price matched from office works for $94.05 :)

    • Nice - but similar with cash rewards :)

      • I did consider that but I feel better knowing if it doesn’t suit my needs I can return with no hassle. Amazon will only accept unopened items for return.

  • Just picked one up at Bunnings with the 10% price beat. $89.10 all up.

Get it from took counter. Old mate serving tried to tell me they don't price match online but I showed him the Bunnings website where it shows they do. He checked with manager and all good.

    • I tried Bunnings before I tried officeworks and their reason for declining was because of the need to sign up for prime

      • "Bunnings' price guarantee applies to any lower price on an item that is currently stocked and available from an online store, or in a physical store in Australia."

You can get Amazon prime on a free 30 day trial. Sounds like a flaky excuse they gave you. Should of asked to speak to a manager or tried another store if nearby.
