No ATM Withdrawal Fees @ ANZ, Commonwealth, NAB and Westpac ATMs

22129

A reminder of these awesome deal and deal from almost a year ago, when CBA announced that they would drop ATM fees and the other big banks quickly followed suit.

There is no need to go around hunting your particular bank's ATM when you can find any of the big four banks'. This has been very convenient since.

Edit: I understand that a part of our community are with ING, who already get free ATM withdrawals from any ATM, and therefore this deal is not applicable to them. This deal appeals to those who do not have an ING bank account (or other banks with fee-free ATM withdrawals), cannot easily fulfill the monthly conditions (ie. $1000 monthly deposit and 5 x transactions) or financially better to bank with someone else due to mortgages etc. They don't have to do anything and immediately have access to a wider range of ATMs for free. While this deal does not benefit those who have ING as their main bank, it does not mean that this is not a deal.

As an aside to this, I was at a 7-Eleven the other day and saw a sign on their ATM that said it will soon no longer be fee-free to CommBank and BankWest customers. Maybe not important for everybody, but it's a disappointing move. Does anyone know anything about this? Are CBA pulling out of 7-Eleven?

    • +14

I think they wont be bank west ATMS anymore.

Bankwest also announced closure of 29 branches today..

    • +1

Is it a Bankwest ATM? Bankwest ATMs have been free for Commonwealth and Bankwest customers, and they're not part of this deal.

    • +3

Bankwest's 7 Eleven ATM network allowed Commonwealth Bank customers to make free withdrawals but it did not cut fees for customers of other banks when the contentious fees were scrapped in a pre-royal commission charm offensive in September last year.
      https://www.afr.com/business/banking-and-finance/financial-s…

I think this means that the 7 Eleven ATMs were only fee-free for BW/CBA customers, now everyone will incur fees regardless from their new unbranded/generic ATMs.

    • +1

I saw before 7/11 said they didn’t renew their deal with Bankwest so they will be rebranding the atms (ended July 1st)

    • They bought out Bankwest and now they are closing majority of the branches down - shame on them.

    • My local 7Eleven rebranded their ATM a few weeks ago.

It’s is now a 7-eleven ATM by Cashcard. All withdrawals no matter which bank cost $2.50

Unless you’re with ING… then they give that $2.50 fee back to you.

      • +2

Or Macquarie, they are also fee free, plus 50c for withdrawing over $100 via eftpos.

      • +2

Isn't it possible just to get cash out with a purchase from 711?

        • I'd do it if I could find something for your username.

Actually, up to 5 times you would be fine.

  • +2

i did not even know this, thans OP for the reminder. i also seen the sign at 7 Eleven

  • +2

    Or just switch to ING?

    • +18

For people with ING as their main bank, this deal is irrelevant as they already get free ATM withdrawal. In fact, this deal weakens the appeal of the benefit as now more people have access to a wider range of ATMs.

For people who have ING bank account but not their main, they have to leave some money on the ING account, make sure their monthly $1000 transfer goes through every time, and make 5 monthly purchases on the ING card just to get free ATM withdrawals. You can already see that's a lot of effort/conditions just for the benefit.

For people who don't have ING bank account, they don't have to do anything and they immediately get access to the big four banks' ATMs. This is the appeal of this deal.

For those interested in this option, the below steps work quite well:

        • Get income paid into ING
        • Transfer bill money to other bank (Transfers under $1000 are now instant with ING - 1 Per day)
        • Use ING for all card purchases & cash withdrawals

Been doing this for many years and it has worked a treat. Completely fee free.

ING also offer the 'round-up' feature now which rounds up your transactions and transfers it into your linked ING savings account.

        • +13

Ways to make the last point even easier:

          • Use Beem It to send 5x transactions to a friend. Get them to send it back. Beem It transactions are seen as card transactions, which is why this works
          • Make split payments at Coles/Woolworths ($0.01) 5x. Pay remaining with your chosen Gift Card payment to ensure maximum discount. INSERT your card and select Savings to ensure the transaction is recorded immediately. Will elaborate on this below
          • Make 5x minimum payments for one of your utilities (e.g. Electricity, Gas, Internet). EnergyAustralia's minimum for instance is $0.10.

The 5 transactions have to be cleared in the calendar month. This means if you go on 31 July and do 5x $0.01 contactless transactions at Coles/Woolworths thinking you're making it just in time, you won't, because the transaction doesn't clear immediately.

So - if you're going down the self checkout path and it's close to the end of the month, make sure you insert/swipe your card and select Savings to ensure the transaction clears immediately.

Just out of curiosity, does ING not have Osko payment system and/or PayID or are their limits for Osko under $1000?

        • @illumination: One can also BEEMIT from ING (own account) to BIG4 Bank (own account)

        • @edreamer46: That is true.. but will require you to have 2x Beem It accounts?

        • @loremoon: I've been using PayID on ING since February, and I've noticed my other payments come up with Osko even if they're not with ING. Not sure of the limit though..?

        • @loremoon: I've been using PayID on ING since February, and I've noticed my other payments come up with Osko even if they're not with ING. Not sure of the limit though..?

        • @loremoon:
ING daily OSKO limit is $1000

          @Scrooge McDuck: Discussed here

Difference is with ING you won't be charged an ATM fee anywhere worldwide (if you meet their criteria). You may still get charged with Macquarie (if the ATM charges you), but it is a very good alternative to ING.

        • What do you mean by bill money? And one instant transfer per day?

        • @illumination:
Just recently got ing for upcoming OS travel. I have 2 questions and you seem to know a lot
          1. Is there any indication that you have successfully completed the qualifying requirements, ie 1k and 5x transactions?
          2. For joint accounts, do both cards need to do 5x transactions each?
          Thanks

        • @ejayt: not sure what you mean by other payments, but osko is the new real time payments platform being installed to all banks and credit unions.

Its a bit random at the moment but eventually all your consumer domestic payments and most business payments will use osko. You will hear the banks saying its progressive rollout, which is code for we are so far behind schedule in our IT projects that we are still to implement much of it.

          @lnem2:

          1. Is there any indication that you have successfully completed the qualifying requirements, ie 1k and 5x transactions?

I don't think there is within the calendar month yourself, but once the new month comes around, if you have completed the 1k transfer and 5x transactions, there is an indicator. After clicking your Orange Everyday account (just above transactions), it says "Rebates this month" with either a "Yes" or a "No".

          1. For joint accounts, do both cards need to do 5x transactions each?

Nope. Source: I use a joint account and only do the transactions on one card

        • @illumination: thanks. For the record, I couldn't find it in their app, but "rebates this month" shows on their website

        • @lnem2: Ah ok. Yes I was referring to internet banking not phone app - sorry. You figured it out anyway!

        • @illumination:

As far as I've been using Macquarie domestically and internationally, they don't charge ATM fees and they also refunded any ATM fees. The app is way better than citi, and there are no transactions requirement as per ING.

      • +4

Shortly after the big 4 introduced these atm changes, ING added atm fee refunds for any ATMs worldwide. They did add in the 5 transaction requirement but it’s easy enough to meet.

ING is very useful in some countries that charge high fees. Also just that piece of mind that you can withdraw at any ATM in any corner of the world with no fees. My highest refunded ATM fee so far was ovef $12!

I’ve found the Citibank plus card to have a slightly better exchange rate from my experiements though. It could be the difference between MC and Visa. Citibank doesn’t all ATM fees though.

        • +1

Another alternative to Citibank is Macquarie - both do not charge (their own) fees for overseas ATM withdrawals, but ING is definitely still the best with its worldwide ATM fee rebate.

Macquarie also don't charge domestic ATM fees.

        • @illumination:
Yes, Macquarie would be similar to Citi I imagine as they are both MC. The benefit that Citi has is that there are a lot of Citibank ATMs worldwide, so you can be sure that no fees will be charged. Although, I don’t think Citi atms would charge an atm fee for other cards either in most cases.
Also rumours of getting a slightly better rate for using a Citibank atm.
I would have to do some tests by withdrawing at the same time from a citibank and non citibank atm with both the citi and macquarie card to see the results.

        • @potm:

Citi atms would charge an atm fee for other cards either in most cases.

Citi themselves do not charge ATM fees but yes correct withdrawing Citibank ATMs (I think) guarantees no fee. Benefit of using a Citibank card to withdraw from Citibank ATM is you also get shown an instant rate and remaining balance on the machine itself.

I've found the rate between ING and Citibank (i.e. Visa/MC) to be quite close. Sometimes ING is better, and other times Citibank is better.

        • @illumination:
Yes, using a Citibank card in a Citibank atm is guaranteed to be fee free anywhere. It might be irrelevant though if all the Citibank atms in the world don't charge for use of the atm.

I've found the rate to be slightly better for Citibank in all my tests so far so that is my go to card first if it's an atm of any proper bank and not likely to charge a fee. The best case preference is finding a Citibank atm to use the Citibank card in.

In terms of showing you the cost for the withdrawal I think that is just an estimate and the final cost can vary when the transaction posts. Last time I was in Singapore and withdrew $100, the cost was shown as slightly higher than $100 in AUD. When the transaction posted, it was slightly lower than $100.
I think this is similar to credit card pending transactions, the final amount can vary from the original pending amount.

        • +3

I tested ING vs Citibank in Cambodia a couple of weeks ago as I have been working and travelling overseas quite a bit in the last few years and have recently acquired an ING account after having Citibank for a while.
I made consecutive withdrawals of US$90 with both cards. The exchange rate was almost identical (AU$128.64 for Citi, $129.08 for ING). However ING refunded the local ATM fee of US$5 (AU$6.79) (which is pretty standard at any bank in Cambodia). So I definitely came out ahead with ING.

        • @Angelino: What we're discussing is a hypothetical scenario where you're not getting charged ATM fees with either card though.

In your case, it's more in line with potm's experience, which is that the Citibank card gives you better rates than ING.

        • @Angelino: How did their exchange rates compare to the daily rate, say, on XE, on that day, & was the ATM fee for Citibank also USD5 ?

        • You can also use Citibank Plus in ATM's owned by other Banks without charge, I have done this in China and Malaysia. Also in 7/11 stores in Japan. This Whirlpool Wiki lists ATM's where this card can be used fee free in numerous countries .
          https://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/citibank_plus_transaction_acco…

        • @Yola:

The difference is Citibank does not refund you if the ATM itself has a charge.

ING is the only Australian bank that truly gives you complete, worldwide free ATMs.

If the ATM you use charges you, ING will refund the fee to you. If you're using a Citibank card, you'll still be charged.

        • @illumination:
There are no Citibank ATMs in Cambodia so you can't avoid paying an ATM fee as they all charge a fee (some charge US$4 but most charge US$5). The difference is that ING will refund that fee. So yes you might be a few cents ahead on the exchange rate but you'll be well behind after the ATM fee.

        • @Peck:
I did my withdrawal on July 6. Can't remember exactly what time but looking at XE at 12 noon on that day they give exchange rate as 0.7400 to the Australian dollar. Based on that US$90 comes to AU$121.62.
ATM fee was the same for both cards.

      • ING also has free ATM withdrawals world-wide and no international transaction fees on purchases.

      • -4

asa far as I now, the biggest downside on ING is that it is not part of the depositor guarantee scheme up to $250,000 per ADI (Authorise Deposit-taking Institution) in case of default/bail in.

      • +1

I find I use those third-party ATMs a lot though, which is where the ING shines. I don't carry much cash so when I need it, it's at the pub or a burger joint or similar and I don't want to hunt around for a bank ATM. I'll just use the first ATM I find which is usually in the pub. If I didn't have the ING, I'd probably carry more cash but this way I don't need to.

        • +1

Yeah this is the same for me. I've saved $33 since January on ATM fees alone. Which is a whole week of lunches on my budget.

        • -1

I find I use those third-party ATMs a lot though, which is where the ING shines.

But you use it a lot because you know it's free. If it wasn't, you'd probably go to the closest free one right?

If I didn't have the ING, I'd probably carry more cash but this way I don't need to.

or do this, as you've said lol

        • @illumination:

If it wasn't, you'd probably go to the closest free one right

Sure, I could leave the venue and go walking the streets, possibly even walking past a third-party one before I found a bank one. Why would I waste my time?

I use whichever one is most convenient. I don't care if it's bank or third-party, I don't even have to think. And it's the same overseas, just use whichever one is closest. No fees.

          or do this

I don't want to be thinking about managing my cash, ensuring I always have enough in my wallet to cover all possible situations. This way I don't have to. It's not a big deal but I'm talking about convenience here, not life-changing stuff.

I'm not exactly sure what the point of your comment is actually. If you're happy with your bank card, that's fine but there's no doubt that the ING card is more convenient (assuming you are already meeting the criteria, as I am). And if you want to go a step further, keep all your money in an attached Savings Maximiser and transfer on your phone just before you use the ATM and earn 2.80% interest on your money too.

        • +1

          @dazweeja:

I think you're misunderstanding me completely. I am on the same page as you in that the ING is an awesome card, and I would say it is the best card for ATM withdrawals out of all the Australian bank accounts hands down.

I love not having to think about which ATM to go to and it adds an extra layer of convenience that you otherwise wouldn't have. Now, instead of me asking, "where is the closest CBA ATM?", I ask "where's the closest ATM?" A common response is then, "which bank?" and it's just so satisfying saying "any. I don't care." knowing it's free!

I'm not exactly sure what the point of your comment is actually.

I think the main thing I was responding to was you saying "I find I use those third-party ATMS a lot", which was why I bolded that part. I was pointing out that it's more that you're now using them a lot knowing that it now doesn't cost you a cent, rather than the other way round. My reading of it was "I ordinarily use third party ATMs a lot, and now that I've got ING, it's free!" but I was trying to say, it's more the other way round. You use the third party ATMs a lot now because it's free.

        • @illumination:

In that case, I completely agree with you!

I think the benefits are even greater overseas where being able to use any ATM without fees is a much bigger deal. Even with a Citi card, I still had to be careful about ATM operator fees. Not an issue with ING.
