HP 5102 Netbook $259 on eBay $249 Instore (Wynyard, Sydney) - 2G RAM, HD LED Display, 6 Cell Bat

557

Hi All,

This is the ebay URL;
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HP-5102-10inch-Netbook-N450-1-66Ghz-2…
It's from the same store but it's $249 inc. delivery

I just picked up this netbook, it was by far the cheapest around when the specs are taken into consideration. It comes with Windows Vista but if you can live with that or upgrade it to Windows 7 (like I plan to) it's pretty good value.

Intel Atom N450 1.66GHz CPU
2G RAM
160G 7200rpm HDD
10.1 (1366*768) HD Display
Wireless N Bluetooth
2MP Webcam
6 Cell Battery
Vista Basic

I purchased mine from in store at Wynyard, not sure if the other stores have stock but they should because I was told that they have 300 in their warehouse

***was $249 delivered on ebay but the price has gone up to $259 - I still presume the price in store is $249 but it may have also gone to $259.

    • If you go to their website they have some other machines that have that criteria but you won't get the 6cell battery, 2g ram, ect.

Coincidentally, I just loaded 7 on this comp and it works sweet.

      • When you say windows 7 you mean 'windows 7 starter' which is designed for netbooks or the full verion of the windows 7 operating system?

I do have original windows 7 disk that came with my other computer. Not sure how easy would it be to install it considering I'll have to somehow put it on a usb drive and make it bootable.

    • Install MeeGo / Ubuntu. Why would anyone want to run Windows (a desktop OS) on a netbook?

it's shit how i posted the eBay link on a new post, got closed, and this OP stole my link and im not getting any credit.

      Thanks also to BargainHunter69.

        Couldn't agree more.

    • Don't know why you got downvoted, it just discourages people from posting good links. I neutralised it for you. Give credit where credit is due.

Just called the store, they can sell it for $249 if I buy in-store

    • This is with Haymarket and Hurtsville store btw,
I think it would be the same with other stores, I hope.

  • ok i caved. bought the last one from clarence st. Love the screen, keyboards fantastic, not too heavy. Vista is yuck though, gonna put 7 on it, or even hack osx. it even comes with a pouch which is cool. It's $249 in store. It's got wireless N … and my biggest (good) surprise - it's got gigabit !!

I am already waiting on the delivery for the Lenovo laptop but this one is sooooo tempting! Someone please stop me!

  • A111+++ buyer, would purchase again. Speedy delivery thx Bargains hunter extrodanaire!11!

  • Anyone know which wireless card does this Laptop have?

Or anyone know how to find out?

    • +1

From looking at device manager: broadcom 43224ag. It's 802.11a/b/g/draft-n

      • Thanks man! It works like a charm… So many drivers on their official page lol

Buyers, please BEWARE with this store !!!

I called earlier, spoke to Mark (Haymarket store) and he can give me $249 if I buy in-store,
So I rush up to the store from my workplace, 2 hours later I arrived, spoke to Mark and he refuse to give me $249, told me that the price has gone up to $259,
After a bit of debate, he still won't change his mind and won't honor his earlier deal with me, WHAT A SHAME !!!

I still ended up getting the laptop though because I need one urgently and I think $259 for this laptop considering the spec, is still very cheap.

I called Hurtsville store after that and they still can give me $249, not sure whether they will change their mind once the customer come to the store :)

Did he look like Gordon Ghecco, pacing around chanting "GREED IS GOOD"?

Seriously, this $10 discrepancy is going to root their reputation. Obviously they just don't realise what credibility is, and how volatile it can be.

Shame file for Orange "10 buck $uck" IT

  • Can anyone verify the Bluetooth capability?

    • Yes it has bluetooth 2.1

  • So tempted to pick this up. Can the CPU handle 720p videos?

    • most likely not

i have the EM350 and it has nearly exact specs as this
my netbook has same CPU and can't handle 720p and 1080p(OFC)

      • Do you have the hardware assisted version of flash installed? (10.2)
        http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Do you see a tick next to "Enable Hardware acceleration" in the settings dialogue box? (right click on flash graphic, select "settings")

        • yea mine is ticked

is it meant to be unticked?

        • It's meant to be ticked.

So the CPU is at 100% when playing 720p?

        • @ Chris

well it just like lags out, so i guess so
it's like every 2-4 seconds it stops then plays again most times with video stopping and audio continuing playing

        • I would have thought it could have handled 720p flash. With the GMA 3150 chipset and hardware acceleration.

I'll have to wait until mine arrives in a few days and try it out myself.

      • my EM350 plays 720p mkvs but i have to use CoreAVC codec. cpu usage is around 60% IIRC

        • i will try using COREAVC codec, seems promising

        • tried with zoom player and coreavc
          and it plays smoothly
although it is quite soft when compared to VLC player

    • Does it have a Mini PCI Express slot spare so we could install a h/w video decoder card?

  • anyone hackintoshed one of these?

    • I want to know the same….
Google search didn't take me far :(

  • Found another listing
    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/HP-Mini-5102-10-Netbook-N450-1-66Ghz-…
It's by orangeit3c instead of orangeit_store. Anyone know why they're doing this?

    • because they have a gazillion of them? I was expecting to see them at $269 now, lol.

      • im wondering why they have two eBay accounts?

  • I purchased 2 of these and cancelled my lenovo i3 order. The lenovo was going to be overkill and too big for what I need at the moment.

Does this one qualify for the music downloads?

    http://www.musicforhp.com/

    • I'd also like to know this.

  • LOL @ the people complaining about the price change.

Did Orange IT post the deal on OzBargain? Is there a printed advertisement somewhere that has $249 written on it?
There's many reason's why the price might have changed.

I'm sure they didn't see the post on OzBargain and go "Oh we'll jack it up $10". The world doesn't revolve around OzB.

    • indeed, well these people are just acting out what some parts of our culture are like, that feeling of entitlement

  • For those of you who have already bought this netbook:

Can it run 720p H264 MKV files from HDD without lag?

    Thanks!

    • Have you got the sample file? I'll test it for ya…

    • No it cannot. Tried VLC player and WMP with shark007 codec on Win7 pro. The cpu is too weak for 720p.

      • yes it does

try CoreAVC codec and MPC homecinema and u have to make sure it's being used instead of MPC's internal filters

i can play 720p mkvs smoothly but yes the cpu goes to 80% for the MPC process.. 100% all up

        • Thanks i'll try it out tonight

    • The CoreAVC codec is probably one of the few bastions of hope. :)

  • what's the colour options?

  • How long did it take for people to have it delivered?

  • Hmm, still waiting for confirmation email. Maybe I missed out.

  • +1

    anyone's netbook shipped yet?

im never ordering from orangeIT again. it has been over 2days since I ordered!

I jsut got a reply from their eBay store, saying "We will ship it within 48 hrs."

Now that's 4 days worth of processing! UNACCEPTABLE!~

    • I ordered ~6pm Monday and got my shipping notice midday today.

      • well that's rather unfair… did you pay 259 or 249?

        • $249 + $5 insurance.

        • yeh i paid 249 + 5 insurance as well :(

idk why but i comment on your comment below? D=

        • Mine was just delivered.

Not impressed with the packing. All they did was slap a AusPost label on the original HP box. Might as well have put "Laptop inside - steal me" on it.

  • No indication at all. You can give them the appropriate feedback via ebay at least.

A few days doesn't worry me, but I think they may be selling more than they can handle.

    • -1

      definitely getting neg from me.

  • I ended up buying one myself. I sent them email on ebay account to see if I can pick up from their city store. Its been more than 1 day and still no response.
They are most definately based in China for their ebay account depending upon the time it takes to get back and also they seem to reply after 4pm. Maybe that's why its slow because of the time difference.
Its definately not a good form!

  • Waiting for a reply from them as well. I want to pay the $5 for shipping insurance. They wanted to charge me $10 for two on checkout and I forgot to chase them about that as well.

I ordered on Tuesday and hope I will get some response soon.

Comments on ebay indicate the delivery was rapid!

    • Ordered Tuesday afternoon about 4pm, received sent notice about 11:40am this morning, hopefully will only take one day delivery as I live in Newcastle.

      • I ordered Tuesday and am still waiting for confirmation. :(

    • their delivery is far from rapid for me =/

  • I just want them to respond to my email!

    • I just got my confirmation that they got my $$ (bank deposit)which I ordered on the 14th.
No sign yet of a shipping notification though.

I'll hold off giving them a serve until I get the ship. confo. or the machine delivered.

  • +1

Yeah its frustrating. Very tempted to give my fist ever negative feedback.

    • One should only give negative feedback if there's a promised postage time, a major error in the listing, or you never receive the item.

Paid Tuesday, got payment confirmation on Wednesday I think, no shipping notification yet. Selling my existing Netbook on Sunday. So hopefully it'll be here sometime next week, if not, I can deal with my smartphone in the meantime. ^_^

  • I did get shipping confirmation for mine 2 day. May even be here by tomorrow!

    • I'm hoping for mine tomorrow as well, fingers crossed.

  • Anyone got theirs yet? What does it perform like? Is the full res screen much better? 7200RPM HD can't hurt either.

    • I got mine via in store pick up on the first day. Installed Win 7 Ultimate 64bit.

Very good and overall it does out performs my AA1 (9"), eeepc (1005ha)& eeepc (7").

      1. the higher screen reso is the bomb :) - I won't go back 1024 x 600 any more. Warning: I'm ok with the smaller font size :)
      2. 7200rpm does help a bit. My daily usage & web browsing is good and smooth.
      3. RMVB movie files seems faster opening and smooth. Using MPC Player.
      • A general tip for 1. Increase the DPI if you can't handle a small font size!

  • I'm putting windows 7 on my sister's now. The screen is much better than my current netbook. And seems pretty fast. Although it's a fresh install

  • Seems like no Hackintosh for this baby? Anyone manage to digg anything out?

  • +2

    finally got mine today

  • +1

Yup, got my 10 of them today too. I did have to order 8 of them for a local sporting club I;m associated with and one for a co-worker.

Seems very good quality for the price - but thats what I expected from the reviews. Am going to try a performance version of XP on it first and pending that one of the Linux netbook remixes.

Vista on it would be horrendous.

    • what's quality of screen like - viewing angles and colour?
      Vista/7 "Windows Experience Index"?

    • MeeGo. Trust me on this. (Unless you need h.264 video file support, or non-free codecs, that's a bit of a pain.) Youtube naturally works fine.

  • anyone know, is this netbook can using a bcm70015 from broadcom HD decoder?

  • I now need to sell mine somehow. Just picked up a good priced Macbook Pro! Any Brisbane people want a couple of netbooks…never used? I purchased a Sony Vaio 11" for my wife instead as well. Got a good price.

  • What the hell is wrong with these people that they don't send confirmation emails, don't reply to requests for order updates. It's been over a week and nothing.

The first damned email they send says to wait for a confirmation email and then they never do that!

  • Same here!! Extremely frustrating!!

  • mm my netbook is running quite warm. the cpu is constantly at 53degrees. anyone else?
Also, the fan is very noisy

    • disable hp wireless assistant it uses about 40% of your cpu but does nothing really.
update the broadcom driver form the hp website as the one on this machine will use all available cpu left but they fixed it in version 5
uninstall Mcafee(its quite a task to do) its hacker guard uses at least 40% of cpu and is rubbish av anyway ill be downloading microsofts free security essentials a lite program which works great and is free

      • I fresh installed windows 7 already. Free of crapware.. but still running extremely hot

        • what percentage is the cpu running at?

What version of win7 are using?

        • Ultimate. ~20-30% because I have msn, skype, chrome, utorrent on.
utorrent isnt downloading anything atm tho.
ambient temperature at my house is ~25C

        • You would not think that 30% would make it hot really i have not played with it enough to comment on normal temp but i have noticed that when charging/pluged in it seems alot hotter and the fan is constantly running

running on battery it seemed a bit better after i got all the crap off it

        • mine is always plugged in. you could say it's my socialnetworking + torrenting machine LOL
          it does nothing else :)

  • +3

Hi guys i brought this yesterday for $259 havent used it enough to comment on the product really but for most part it seems good but comes loaded with crap mcafee av and about 30 other programs which keeps the cpu at 100% and it running very hot seems to be working better and cooler now that i have disabled or uninstalled alot of them.

Now for the BUT dont deal with orange IT if you can avoid it guys this is a great price though for a reasonably good product BUT when i called them up they said that they had a display running in the store so i could check it out before buying plus if i picked it up rather than buy on ebay she would give $20 off, i went to the town hall store first where the guy said no they dont have any displays but they do in the haymarket store so i went down there and sure enough they had one set up but not turned on and after waiting for the manager to stop screaming at another customer and this guy leaving screaming dont buy from these guys they lie and cheat ppl(perhaps i should have left than) the guy refused to set one up and was pretty rude really saying no i never called up! also refused to honour the discount too saying me being stuffed around by them was not his problem but its your problem and i dont care!!! seriously WTF

Anyway i needed a lappy just for word and crap really next week and it was quite cheap at $259 so i just got it felt bad buying off someone who had just abused me. When i got home i noticed the plastic had been cut and the laptop seemed to be not quite new i mean there is no scratches or anything i still had to set it up but the plastic was not sealed (tape undone) buble wrap ripped, the cable ties were undone around the power cord etc it all appear to be in new cond but just has been opened which is a bit funny anyway i think this is a really cheap price and its not a bad product really but i will not go back there EVER and if have a problem i know they will be no help whatsoever.

    • Mine turned out to be new, but packaging was bad. I mean.. would it hurt to put it in another box for postage and not just the retail box!?
Customer service is shit to the max. getting neg feedback on ebay from me.

  • Is there a credit card surcharge if you buy at one of their store?
