Very good price. Bought it for 180 USD (~$240) 5 months ago when there were deals going on.

    • are these hdd easily to just remove and put in pc?
or do you need to do extra modifications to it?

      • Yea pretty easy to shack. There are YouTube videos for it.

        • +1

yeah but those videos are old

          WD updates these mybooks
and I read in another post on ozbargain
that someone had to do some soldering for the 3.3V or something

          Did you remove the hdd?

        • @pinkybrain:

Okay no idea on new updates. At least back in March, they were pretty straightforward.

        • +1

          @pinkybrain:
Here's a guide for WD MyBooks. They take maybe… 5-10 minutes per drive to shuck. I followed the same guide from drives I got in June. As long as you have enough guitar picks/old credit cards, you'll be fine shucking.

If your PSU doesn't support 3.3V pin (check here) then you might have to tape over the 3.3v pin, use an adapter, or snip it off.

      • +4

You'll need to block the 3v pin from the HDD to allow it to 'spin up'. Use a thin strip of non-conductive tape over the 3rd pin of the power plug to prevent power to it (allowing you to spin it up).

        • Or use a molex->sata power adaptor so there's no 3.3v to start with.
Or clip the 3.3v wire on the cable.

        • thanks

yeah I read about it in the past ozbargain post and didn't understand it
but your pic and youtube clip is helpful

That sucks that WD have made the White WDs to require this modification to get it to work in the PC
vs Seagate which is just a simple process.

The only shit thing about Seagate is they still use the SMR archive hdd which I not a fan of.
So only option is to get the WD drives.

        • @shiftyphil:

good idea about the molex > sata adapter
though someone in that previous ozbargain post
also mention about these adapters being fire hazzards

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=3&v=EYkof-csPfI

          https://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/comments/4r6m8d/molex_t…

is it is possible to clip the 3.3 wire without cut that power to the other plugs?
Normally one cable has like 3 sata plugs on it.

What is purpose of that 3.3V wire, if it is normally needed for the regular sata hdd
but for this WD one, we should remove it?
Why have it in the first place?

        • +1

          @pinkybrain:

From my understanding - if that 3v lane receives power, it "blocks" the drive from spinning up.
It's WD's attempt at preventing people from shucking cheaper external drives

        • +1

          @CharcoaI:

Yeah WD are shit for doing this
WD also hard solder the usb connectors to their portable 2.5 inch drives as well
so if we open the 2.5 drives, there is not sata connectors.

Seagate just let you do what you want.
If only Seagate would get rid of these SMR drives and replace them with helium ones.
Is the there any seagate hdd that is not SMR drives?

So 3V is needed for the other normal hdd?
If those normal sata hdd don't received the 3.3V, then it won't function/work?
So cutting the 3.3V wire on the sata cable would makethe other hdd connected to the same sata cable not work?

        • @pinkybrain:

Not sure sorry - someone else with more knowledge might be able to chime in

        • @CharcoaI:

did you buy one of these WD mybook and did the 3V mod?

        • +1

          @pinkybrain:

I just purchased 2x and will putting them into an unRaid server once received :)

        • I would be wanting to use the drive in a 4 bay Probox enclosure, would i still need to disable the 3v pin?

        • @marko62:

Nah no need to, apparently the new whites work unmodified in the Probox's.

        • @CH: Thanks

  • My Prime trial already expired so it should be $19 for delivery in the title.

    • Open a new account for another 30 day free trial.

      • A new account with the same customer details, payment details and same delivery address, how does it work?

        • +1

My partner uses her work address for situations like this lol.

        • +4

Can be your wife, partner etc etc. Have used same address and same payment details previously

        • They kinda don't care, it inflates their stats. Only gets sus when there's more people with accounts than there are people.

        • +1

Lol they dont check i have 34 amazon accounts, i was using the spend 79 get $20 off deal to buy mega bloks 2 bags for $10 but it counted them as a $30 purchase.

So id add 6 bags for $30, then use $20 off code and bam, 6 bags of mega bloks for $10. Sold and gave away most of them, still got 16 in the cupboard that im gona give to the churches poor kids gift programs they run at christmas.

Lol bought a new bath tub with my profits.

  • -3

By the way, you can buy a LaCie Porsche Design one which has much more value than this WD (and possibly a better drive inside), local stock and warranty and I can pick up for $255.
    https://www.umart.com.au/goods.php?id=35305

    • +9

Better enclosure but (generally considered) worse drive

LaCie has a Seagate SMR Archive drive, this one will have a WD Helium drive with same spec as their Reds

        • +6

          That's 180 USD

        • -4

@bargain_finder: That's right I was still thinking at the AU site.
But I would still buy the Lacie one locally for a similar price and better quality and value.

        • +1

@dealhunt: The Lacie is not the better deal or hard drive. WD drives> Seagate drives.

        • +1

@0FoxGiven: If you talk to Seagate fanbois, they'll say Seagate is the best and the same happens for other brands, it's like talking politics.

        • -3

@dealhunt: No, Seagates are known to fail much more often. I've never had a WD drive fail on me, I have 2 dead Seagates.

        • @MahyarJ: I told you it's like talking politics but it seems like you didn't get my message :)

        • @dealhunt: Well I'm not a fanboy (Who the hell is a fanboy of hard drives?). I own hard drives from both companies. The Seagate failed me after 2 years, the WD is still going after 4 years.

        • @0FoxGiven:

Who the hell is a fanboy of hard drives?

Indeed there are fanbois about hard drives!
By the way you made your point already so why copy & paste what you already said?

        • @dealhunt: Btw, my reply doesn't look like a copy and paste to me. But your rant all over this page looks like it has been copy and pasted plenty o times :D

    • +5

LaCie is Seagate these days, and their drives are the same as any other Seagate external (mostly slower SMR drives). WD externals are superior.

      • I'm not racing in a competition where 3-4 seconds data transfer difference means losing the prize.

      • +6

Not necessarily. See the Backblaze stats in the link below that shows over time their WD drives have the highest rates of failure and their Seagate drives have survived much better over time:

        https://www.backblaze.com/blog/hard-drive-stats-for-q2-2018/

Their Seagate drives have around 1% failures whereas the WD drives are as much as 5%.

I'm sure both are absolutely fine, but it's a myth that WD are superior to Seagate.

        • +1

I've to admit that several years ago I had a problem with a Seagate drive but as I said the drives inside these boxes are always different.
We never know what specific drive is inside today or tomorrow so brand choice has became like talking about politics where everyone spreads good words for the party of their choice.

        • +3

AFAIK none of the Seagate drives Backblaze uses are SMR type drives (which makes sense, they don't work well for Backblaze's workloads). I also don't believe any of the WD drives they show stats for are helium drives (the closest is probably the HGST drives, which I believe WD's helium drive designs descend from, but that's likely not a useful comparison).

So there's not a whole lot of conclusions you can draw from those stats about these external type drives, most likely because Backblaze doesn't need to shuck externals any more.

Regardless, I was referring to performance more than anything else. I'd be saying something quite different if the Seagate externals were including IronWolf drives rather than the Archive/Barracuda Compute SMR ones.

WD and Seagate seem to even out over time with regards to lifespan, one's up for a while and then the other is. Excluding truly bad models (e.g. those dreadful post flood Seagate 3TB drives) it's not something I pay close attention to.

I have and use multiple Seagate externals, because at the time I bought them the cost difference was higher and I just want to store some backups. I certainly still can't see any justification for spending more on a drive with significantly worse performance.

        • It is down to specific models. Both WD and Seagate have had nightmare drives.

My personal experience with Seagate 1TB 2.5" and 3 and 4 TB 3.5" drives is shockingly bad. Whereas 4TB WD drives have had very low failure rates.

        • +1

I'm also sure that both are fine, but these percentages aren't really comparable unless the number of drives tested was roughly the same. Adding up the totals says they had 76,387 Seagate drives, compared to 660 WD drives. Even if you totalled all the HGST drives together with WD (since they got acquired in 2012, and the first 4TB HGST drives launched in late 2011) this is still nowhere near the number of Seagate drives that were tested.

    • Why are you being nagged for giving a local option at a similar price? Having more options is good for the consumer and some might prefer seagate.

  • +1

$202 AUD (IF you lived in the USA and went to Bestbuy this week) :( :(

    (I need to fly)

    • and lived in a state with no sales tax

      • GOOD POINT! I am meaning to pick some up over there soon, I forgot about that. Need to order out of state.

    • +2

Not in the ozbargain spirit I know but i'm happy paying a bit extra for a hard drive in return for decent medical care and 4 weeks a year off.

  • Thanks OP!

  • +1

wow 8tb……this what I need for my animes.

    • +2

8TB drives have been around since 2014.
Now you can get up to 14TB.

  • Are CashRewards via the Global Store supposed to count? I've done a few combined orders - with local Amazon AU and Amazon US in the same cart and only the stuff fulfilled by Amazon AU is counted

    • My Seagate HDD purchase from last week tracked fine. No idea if it will be approved or not (3 months).

  • +1

    decisions, decisions

    WD 8tb review

    887+ve vs 333 critical reviews

    hmmm

seagate trash seems to be cheaper (149.99) and better ratio
    1138+ve vs 364 critical reviews
    Seagate 8tb review

    • These reviews are pointless and even misleading as Amazon group several different products under the same listing so people's review who bought the 2TB one will count together with who bought the 4TB, 6TB, 8TB and so on.

  • -6

just buy a normal 8tb hdd and buy a hdd enclosure

    • +1

Such as these much cheaper alternatives?

    • +1

Check out component prices for 8tb HDD only (MSY prices)

Seagate Fish and animal range HDD:-

      Seagate Hawk $325

      WD colour range HDD:-
      WD Red $339
      WD Purple $404

  • 8T is really a good size. I need this for my downloads

    • +3

      OK

  • Great price couldn't resist

Paid $655 for the 16tb almost exactly 1 year ago and I thought that was cheap

  • +5

    Don't forget cashrewards $14.40 $13.14 (bloody GST) back @ 6%!!!

I just cancelled my order and reordered with cashrewards

  • Good price for 8TB or 4TBX2?

    • 2 4tb's would be closer to 300.

  • Pity I bought 6tb WD Elements drive a couple weeks ago.

  • As this is a US item it comes with a US plug, right?

    • Of course, it was intended for the US market.

  • Very happy to see these on the AU site as losing them to the US closure was one of my big annoyances.
Ive filled a few NASes with these disks :)

  • Can I use this for my PS4 pro 1tb, as an external HDD for more game space?

    • Yes

  • Do we know which drives these contain?

    • +1

Most likely to be white labelled WD's, but slim chance of being WD Red's

      • I've been seeing online that the Easystores now have white labels in them but they're really just relabelled reds. Do you know anything about that? Any chance of those white labelled reds being in this HDD?

    • +1

I can't say for certain but when I bought some earlier on in the year I got WD80EZAZ-11TDBA0 out of them.

More discussion around that can be found here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/365959

  • Do you get a warranty buying a US model?

  • +1

The 8TB EasyStores are on sale at Best Buy for $202AUD :(((((((((((((((((((((((((((

  • Does this come in AU or US plug?
If US, can I just plug my current WD plug (AU) to it?

    Thanks.

    • 1 -US. 2- no idea

    • +1

can I just plug my current WD plug (AU) to it?

I guess yes just check (read its label) if it has a 12V output.
      https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=1378

      • Thanks!!

    • US plug. Just bend pins to 45 degrees with pliers clamping close to base. 230V works fine. To be sure check output voltage when under load.

      • Or the $5 US to AU adapter from officeworks

        • Yeah, I can do that. Wanted to know if it was possible to just plug and use, without extra adapters here and there. But it's better to be safe than sorry, I say. Thanks!

      • I am too chicken to do that haha. I will check the output voltage then. Thanks!

  • Is anyone can tell me that is this item can be use on windows PC?

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Seagate-Backup-External-Desktop-ST…

    • Install the HFS+ driver for PC and you can use the drive interchangeably between Windows and Mac computers without reformatting

It's a standard hard disk just it came pre-formatted for using on Apple computers so if you only use a PC, just format it fat32 for transferring data.

  • I don't understand the "from Amazon US via Amazon AU", is that just for certain items?

    • -1

I think for items they don't have in stock here.
I also think with this trick they dodge the tax office.

      • You are wrong on both counts. They have this item in stock locally, and since July 1 either way you pay GST.

        • -2

Too many people who have nothing better to do in the life come here just for the joy of clicking the neg button without even knowing why they did it.

  • Thanks OP,
I bit the bullet and bought one. My Seagate 8TB achive drive is near full and i would be wanting one soon. Hopefully the price won't come down much more before i need it

  • +1

No matter the drive you need a good back up plan. Basically you want:

3 copies of any data you don't want to lose
2 different mediums it's stored on
1 copy kept offsite, to prevent against disaster.

  • +1

Great! Just got two for $450 with Amazon Prime trial and signing up to CashRewards with a referral. Thanks, OP!

  • Mine is being delivered today

  • Just got mine delivered today

Price is now $244.32 by the way
