  • Is it worth it to buy xbox one x if you already got ps4 pro?

    • +11

If you have money to spare then yes

    • +4

Imo no graphics are a bit better but thats it as there are no exclusives. Unless you want to play old xbox and 360 games I guess. As a PC gamer I sold my Xbox as I was never playing it after all the first exclusives like Halo and Sunset Overdrive.

      • +13

There are quite a few exclusives if you don't have a gaming PC. It's really a much better system for racing games thanks to the consistent quality and release schedule for Forza Motorsports / Forza Horizon. Outside of that you've got your Gears of War games, your Halos (which you mentioned) and some odd balls like Sunset Overdrive (listed) and Quantum Break.

If you plan to buy all your multi-platform games on there it could be worth it, but it really depends on what kinds of games your into.

      • +8

Halo, Forza, Gears, State of Decay, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum break, Ori and the Blind Forest, Cuphead, Sea of Thieves, PUGB (console exclusive at the moment)

      • +3

It has a lot of console exclusives. Not everyone has a gaming PC…

    • +8

Is it worth buying an X if you have a Pro? Nah.
Is it worth buying an Xbox in general if you have a Pro? Yeah, sure, why not.

I'd say find a cheap Xbox S for the 250/ish mark, stock up on the next free Game Pass promotion like we all did last time, and just ride it with that. You'd get access to around 150 odd games, a lot of which you might very well have played, but in those is several really cool Xbox exclusives like

      Sunset Overdrive
Dead Rising 3 (my favorite in the series)
State of Decay 1 and 2
      Halo 5
Forza Horizon 4 (day one when it drops)
      Gears of War 1, 2, 3, 4, Ultimate, Judgement

And so on. I'm not necessarily saying it's worth the 11 bucks a month, but say you snag a console on the cheap (there's 270 deals at the moment with a game and 1TB but tbh the games in those deals are lackluster compared to past ones), and wait it out on a Game Pass deal like we've had all too many of in the past and spam a good year or two's worth, you'd be doing alright for yourself.

Alternatively, buy a cheap console, buy a year of EA Access for 30 odd and roll with those 70 odd games until you're done. Fair few decent titles in there, and there's always more in the works.

    • +10

PS4 pro doesn’t play 4K UHD if that’s important to you.

      • which one as a dedicated 4k media centre aka youtube/netflix whatever else in 4k on a 4k hdr tv

        • Xbox One S does it all. Currently $319 at Costco.

        • +3

@Ryanek: Or $280 in a bundle from Microsoft eBay.

    • no, get a regular one for the exclusives, i did that but the other way around, got a cheap PS4 for the exclusives.

    • IMO (I feel it isn't biased but I do admit I own a PS4 so take it how you will), I think the best combo is to have a PC and a PS4.

The PC will give you all your multiplayer games (with no subscription required) at much better framerates and visual quality (assuming you have the specs for it, which aren't as expensive as you may think) as well as any multiplatform single player games (Fallout, Tomb Raider, Batman, etc). Component prices are also starting to drop now so it's no longer as expensive as it used to be. Obviously, if you are building a PC purely to play games, and not to use chrome, office, etc. then yes it is almost impossible to build a 4K capable machine for less than $519.20. However, for most people, they will also use their PC for productivity purposes, which can justify the extra cost.

The PS4 then acts solely to play the multitude of top quality exclusives (eg. Last of Us, Uncharted, Horizon, etc.), which I feel alone justify the cost/existence of the console itself.

Whereas with an Xbox, I feel Microsoft had really good intentions to make their games cross compatible with PC however they inadvertently shot themselves in the foot as it kind of limits the need of the console in the first place. Pretty much all the main Xbox exclusives can still be played on PC. Forza? Available on PC. Halo? PC. Cuphead? On PC as well. PUBG? Was on PC well before it came to Xbox.

      • +19

Not everyone wants a gaming PC. Not everyone likes a PC set up. Many people prefer a console setup (like me) because it’s so easy. Press a button, pick up your controller, sit on the sofa and away you go. So, IMO, Xbox One X plus standard PS4 is the best combination. Then I have my cheap laptop for work related things.

        • +5

          Yes I second this

        • +2

Can throw a switch in also :)

      • +5

Honestly, even though I own all three (PS4 Pro, XB1X and PC), an objective view from me is still difficult.

PC: Certainly, games play best on Xbox One slogan is funny. The reality is games play best on a high end PC. And, there isn't any real incentive for a hard core PC gamer to buy XB1X. No need for XB Live Gold or PS Plus to play network games. However, it is the most expensive solution.

        PS4/PS4 Pro: The exclusives.

XB1S/XB1X: XB1S - most cost effective solution + 4K UHD blu-ray; XB1X - most cost effective 4K HDR (with most games playing at 4K or close to 4K). Game pass. The true exclusives are: Halo: The Master Chief collection and Sunset Overdrive.

The best combo is different for each person. You can always come up with reasons why a particular combo makes perfect sense.
However, saying PC gaming setup doesn't cost that much isn't accurate. The fact the graphics card I've got nearly 2 years ago is still way cheaper than how much it costs right now (even with 20% feeBay discount) says something about cost of PC gaming for new comers. Certainly, if you want the absolute best and cost is not an issue, PC gaming is the way to go. It will cost you if you also want 4K UHD blu-ray support on PC (but I know the counter argument that if you really want to enjoy 4K UHD blu-ray, get a dedicated player and hook it up to your 4K HDR TV).

    • +1

It comes down to the followings:

      • Do you have a gaming PC? If yes, is it more powerful than XB1X (i.e. it has Vega 56+ or 1070Ti+). The fact that this question is being asked suggests the answer would be a no.
      • Are you happy with PS4's 4K checkered board or dynamic resolution performance?
      • Do upcoming XB1/PC exclusives matter to you?
      • Does 1080p@60fps or (4K instead of 1080p) for future exclusive games matter a lot to you (i.e. Forza Horizon 4)?

By answering those questions, you can decide whether it is worth it or not. It's difficult to get an objective answer from someone else. I have PS4 Pro, XB1X, XB1S, PC. Personally, I really want to get rid of my XB1S. However, if my friends asked me to recommend one that's the most cost effective, I would suggest get a decent XB1S deal (below $199). XB1X does come with 1 month XB Live Gold + 1 month Game Pass, but considered the price, those bonus vouchers are the least Microsoft can do.

    • +2

I personally like Xbox controller much better than PS. That's enough reason for me to buy XBox.

  • +3

I've been tempted for a while to grab an X for the shit of it but when Phil dropped the "bomb" that they're working on the next gen, and when all the rumours came out about the two different models and my genuine interest in the cheap as heck streaming only one, all of that, and then how well they're doing back compat at this point and my genuine belief that most, if not all, Xbox One games should work on the Next Box out the gate, well, I can't justify dropping half a grand on a console that may very well be outdone by a cheaper box in a couple years that does all this and more.

Combine all the digital games I already own with whatever the future holds for Game Pass and a digital only Xbox doesn't sound half that bad, especially when the rumours reckon it'll be around 100 USD for the little streamer.

Anyway, tl;dr I'm waiting to see if the next Xbox really will have a piss cheap streaming only version, because that's where I wanna put my dosh down.

    • +1

If you’re happy to wait what sounds like a minimum of 18mths for those next gen consoles that’s fair enough.

      • +2

Well that's the thing, the X doesn't really offer me that much over my OG 'Bone, and when it comes down to "do I want to spend 500 on an incremental upgrade that let's me play the same games, only some of them run / look a bit better, or do I wanna wait 2 years or so and potentially be buying an actual next gen console for less" well, I'll be playing the waiting game, as impatient as I am.

        • only some of them run / look a bit better,

This is flat out silly, you're going from 900p/1080p to full fat 4K + extra bells and whistles and it does improve 1080p because it's super sampled 4k which means it displays at 4k but then lowered to 1080p making the 1080p image a bit sharper than just normal 1080p and this is all before we start talking about FPS..

        • +2

@Jetship: They're much higher res but not every game is not 3840x2160.

        • +1

          @Diji1: A lot are though.

        • @Jetship: Sadly, too many of the games aren't actually bumped up from their original versions. Most of the old-school (pre or non-enhanced) X1 games are better on PS4 still, as their original versions are based on the old "PS4 is slightly better than the X1" dynamic.
Having said that, I'd still get the X1 if budget allows (still a ton cheaper than buying or even updating a gaming PC). I don't regret getting either of my X1 or PSPro last year, and the enhanced games do look amazing. I just wish more of the older games were on the receiving end of that enhancement.

      • +1

it's a long time to wait, and in the meantime you could the X and enjoy it, and with new games, they cater for the installed base so they sell units, so will be lots for games for the X ….probably looking at 2 years until you would need the next gen and even then it would need to be for a special title …

    • Microsoft rediscovers FUD.

    • +1

Yeah I'm on the fence too. I just got a new 4k HDR tv. So was gonna upgrade to the One X from the OG One. But with all this talk of a new console in two years. I don't know if it's better to wait or if it's actually worth the upgrade to the X

      • +2

like my comment above if you have a 4K tv it's really worth the upgrade it looks bloody amazing, I had to give up my X1X for a weekend and went back to the S and shit was it painful X is so much better.

      • +1

Surely you’d want to get the most out of your 4K TV and games? Buy an Xbox One X, get your fun out of it, and sell it in a few years for the new one if need be. Simple. You’ll be missing out on 2 years at least of 4K goodness. As a big Xbox gamer, I got an X after getting a 4K TV and I don’t regret it. From 4K and enhanced games to 4K enhanced OG Xbox and Xbox 360 games, I love the thing.

If you only play Xbox every now and then though, you may not get as much out of it. So it really comes down to how big of a gamer you are.

      • Balance up saving $500 now vs. two years of your life using your 4k HDR TV with it (and having a spare/second XBox later). There's always "a new one" of ANY kind of tech right around the corner - and that's assuming that you're a Day-1 buyer of the neXt Box and don't wait a year for the price to go down and some killer apps to arrive.

      • New console in 2 years - that's from Sony. Microsoft's announcement wasn't a surprise anyway. A console takes 2-3 years to be ready. I would be shocked if Microsoft hadn't started working on next gen.

TheDukeOfNukem only purchase Switch games nowadays. He has nearly 2 years worth of GamePass from the MasterCard deal. He hardly plays his PS4. Of course XB1X makes zero sense to him right now at this price. However, are you in the same situation?

You have a 4K HDR TV, so is it really worth waiting for 2 years? As an XB1X owner, my suggestion is use the following questions to help you decide:

        • What do you feel about current, and upcoming XB1X enhanced titles?
        • Games for XB1/XB1S start to dip below 1080p. Is that going to be an issue?
        • Your thoughts on Sony PS4 exclusive titles? Will checkered board 4K (or dynamic resolution up to 4K) do for you?
        • Do you expect XB1X console price to drop significantly in the next 6-12 months?
        • There are a few games I'm looking forward to definitely.
But you make a good point I've got a 4k HDR tv, I may as well make the most of it.
Not that there's anything wrong with my original one.
Although I did recently build a new gaming PC, there's a few games I prefer playing on a console.
Won't be going the Sony route, always been xbox since first halo.

Well looks like I'm getting a X, food ol ozbargain making me spend ha

    • +3

You can play the waiting game, but you’ll be waiting. Is that what you want to do? You can say the same thing for everything, from cars to smart phones. Buy it, get your fun out of it, and sell it in a few years for the new one if need be. Simple.

    • Game streaming, and Microsoft working on next gen console are just marketing talk so far. Both are responding to Sony (PS Now, Sony's announcement regarding this gen finishing and they are working on next gen). All reviewers know deep down, Microsoft prefer this gen to play out longer (XB1X only announced less than 1 year ago). Honestly, if you really think about it, why not be brave and announce that Microsoft is working on a streaming service so that you can stream XB1X enhanced game on XB1S? XB1S can display 4K video so that can work.

Don't get overly excited about the next gen game streaming device yet. Technically, it could have a weaker setup than XB1S (think about Phil's comment that the streaming device will have a price point much lower than what people generally expected from a console).

Also, if the next gen streaming console is only capable of streaming games, chances are your existing digital gaming collection will be pretty useless on that - you will need to pay for game streaming subscription).

  • +3

For those wanting to upgrade to X model from S do note 4k game size exclusive for X is way more than regular ones.
4k upscaling is better value if you want to store more games on same size storage in the box.
4k native on X will surely be better than upscaled but then I will think about it when I upgrade to HDR TV to make it worthwhile.

    • 4k upscaling is better value if you want to store more games on same size storage in the box.

      A few issues on that.

      1. If your XB1S is relying on dynamic resolution to get to 1080p (i.e. it is not able to even do 1080p@30fps on demanding games), even the best 4K upscaling device won't help. Newer games are showing XB1S running out of steam.
      2. How much is that decent 4K upscaling device going to cost?
      3. The 4K contents aren't double the size. Also, an external HDD isn't that expensive.

I get and agree XB1S is better value for money (esp. for people with 1080p TV only). However, bashing XB1X on 4K side of things is sour grapes. With XB1X, you get improved framerate, supersampling even on 1080p devices. Also, better performance and quality on some XB360 games (improved backward compatibility support). 4K isn't the only thing XB1X brings.

  • +3

The benefit of the X that has surprised me is the enhanced 360 games and how good they come up looking. If like me you had plenty of unplayed classics from last gen it's surprising how good the likes of Red Dead Redemption or Fallout 3 come up. Even the original Xbox titles become much improved too.

    • Will X upscale 360 games a lot better than S model?

      • +3

Some Xbox 360 Games are “Xbox One X Enhanced”, so they do look better.

Have a look at the Red Dead Redemption comparison here:
        https://youtu.be/lK-eya5qGUU

        • Argh, don’t tell me that! That just gives me more reasons to buy the damn thing. /jk

Honestly though, these things look like beasts compared to my original XB1. What’s everyone’s thoughts, is it worth the upgrade if one is still using a 37” 1080p Hisense? I loved F4 & F3 are those games worth the investment as in upgrading from an original XB1?

        • +1

@Jawanzar: I would upgrade tbh it's smaller, quieter and so much more powerful than the XB1 1080p games will look slightly better than the standard console due to super sampling which renders the game at 4K then lowers it to 1080p (some games aren't even 1080p on the standard console) which results in a slightly sharper image. You will also get better and more stable FPS.

        • +1

@Jawanzar: I’d upgrade the TV first if it was me. What’s the use in buying 4K native console if ur TV is not even 4K?

        • @Jetship: Fair enough, thanks for the suggestion. Better 1080p games is really what I’d be looking at.

        • @hanofee: Yep, fair point. A TV would be more than the XB1X, which is more appealing, but yeah def a fair point.

      • +1

Gears 3 on the one x looks incredible.

  • Would EBGames price match this?

    • +1

      They don’t match eBay

  • Before buying a console u should check what games u want to play on it. That how I justify buying a ps4 pro. I am mainly a pc person but console still got them exclusive games I want to play. Nothing on xbox interest me and u can buy most on Windows 10

    • +1

Game Pass is also worth looking at. It’s basically Netflix for gaming, and is exclusive to Xbox.

  • +3

500 clams seems a bit rich for a console nearing the end of the generation. No official announcements yet, but the new gen will potentially start as soon as next year according to the internet.

    • I dunno. My bet is moving forward they’ll look to make systems both forwards and backwards compatible in what’s a more PC like model. Breaking continuity every 7 years is a huge risk for a company and has backfired many times such as the PS2 -> PS3 transitionnir the Xbox 360 -> Xbox One. It’s almost as though having the larger user base going into a new generation is a disadvantage as opposed to an advantage, as the majority of gamers aren’t early adopters and if the crowd stays back, so to do developers.

I’m not sure MS will want to do another reboot after the Xbox One launch and with them constantly trying to bridge PC and Console markets, an environment with iterative hardware releases to me makes more sense. It’d fit in with the model used for the X launch. Simplifies supply chain for publishers etc etc. Hardware iterations would still be quite infrequent so I don’t think that’s an issue for developers, and it’s surely simpler than the first few years where you need to support multiple discrete platforms.

Might be wrong, who knows, but being on X86 should allow them to release new hardware without requiring games to specifically target it. If so then the X should retain some longevity, possibly past the current non X models.

      • Backwards compatible for sure, but forwards means games would need to be designed around last gen limitations. Can’t picture progress being limited by out of date technology forever. Increasing resolution and textures is not enough.

    • +4

rumours say 2020 for new consoles, still 2+ years away. (if true)

      • -2

It has to be sooner than this. They'll get too much pressure from big business. EB games is dead atm! No new games being released, 2018 only holds Red dead and 2019 looks glim too.

It's game over for video games for almost 2 years?? They're going to have to release something in 2019..

    • +3

500 clams seems a bit rich for a console nearing the end of the generation

      Geez, hyperbole much?

    • the console is $650 not on sale and it's not even a year old, how much did you expect it to drop in less than 12 months? lol

    • which part of next year …..could be dec 2019 …or later.

    • Yeah and the internet said the 11 series video card prices would've already been announced last month.

No there won't be any new gen for at least 2 years. From Microsoft nor Sony. Phil Spencer himself said the Xbox One support will continue on for a few more years. So now is a good time to get an X.

  • -1

I picked up the one x at this price a few months ago and the difference is night and day. Forza games, titanfall 2, division all look stunning.
Hate going back to to the one s on the 1080 tv.

  • I don't even have a 4k tv :( waiting for a stupid good deal on a 55 Hisense.

    • +2

i'm on the same boat, except i'm waiting for my kids to grow up so they will stop touching the screen thinking it's touch screen….

      • +4

I've put a play pen around my entertainment set up lol. To keep my child (soon to be children) away from it haha.

        • Just want to say damn that's some of the greatest advice, we're expecting our first born early next year and those questions and more will be up for discussion once their on two feet with the with the amount of fun stuff to touch currently in our house. Great idea! Thank you ;)

  • +1

So I currently have a 2tb Xbox One S, and my hesitancy to upgrade (but keep the S for media centre) is the size of games and going back to a 1tb drive. Deleting games and their massive 4k add-ons is a concern to having to re download. Could you download on the S and transfer (while retaining on S) the assets and back and forth? I am expecting NBN FTTC early next year but I rather the idea of being able to play any game without having to prepare for it much first if you know what I mean? Have not researched yet (disclaimer) but just seeing if anybody currently works around the same issue? Or is external storage the way to go for these large 4k X enhanced games?

    • yes, you can already tell the S to download the extra content for the X version, so when you copy across from S you are ready to go …don't need to wait 4 days for an update per game.

you can hang an external drive of the S if you are strapped for space.

We are starting to prep already as we only have optus cable, but when console is turned on for use, it upgrades in the background ….we are waiting to see what Christmas bundles come for the X, as we still have an S as spare, so urgency is minimal.

  • +2

I’ve got an Xbox One S and a One X. It’s night and day. I was bored with the S, but the X has renewed my interest. It’s a great console.

    • +1

really?! what do you need two consoles for?

      • +1

it ain't portable like switch aye
one for bedroom and one for living room

        • Yep

        • I carry my PS4 Pro around… decent sized back pack does the job.

Wish I could do the same with a PC (mini ITX), but haven't found an easy solution to transport a monitor.

      • +1

Among faster loading times for games and apps, Greatly improved graphics even at 1080p and 4K output natively for some games. It also makes use of HDR which some new games use. Look for the label 'Xbox One X enhanced' for games utilising power of the Xbox one x.

  • +2

This is a damn good price

    • This is as good as the sale prices for them have been right? I've already got an Xbox one s and can't decide if I want to get it now or wait for a better sale, maybe boxing day sale?

      • +1

Yeah Iam holding out on the boxing day sale too. Personally if you have an Xbox one s, I wouldnt jump the gun yet.

        • -1

I bought my XB1X last year (after boxing day). Thanks to the people posting the OZB deals, I got mine effectively at this price ($100 AMEX cashback, and selling the PUBG voucher). That's why I have not +ve vote this yet.

  • looks like nice deal. may be off topic..any idea when 'Key Board and mouse' support coming for Xbox(not with emulators)..

  • Slightly side-topic, just picked up my ‘X’ today 2nd hand ‘new in box’ - FYI the controller is lighter and cheaper than the ‘s’ Controller from 2x years ago. It’s also sounds hollow.
Odd being a more expensive console IMHO.
comment, I got an X for red dead 2 4K. Even though Rockstar are Sony fanboys, I’m betting the X will do it more justice.

Plus I missed out on both the Spider-Man red Pro and the 50 million console PS pro recently.

    • +1

PLUS M$ have the new controller coming out soon, awesome idea they have for persons with disabilities and a plus for others for massive config options.

    • the controller is lighter and cheaper than the ‘s’ Controller from 2x years ago

Um… that's odd. I have both XB1S and XB1X. The controllers feel exactly the same. Only difference is the colour. Could it be you were comparing your XB1S controller with batteries inside vs the XB1X controller without batteries?

It's well known that XB1S and XB1X come with the same controller.

  • -4

Just bought mine. Delivery in a few days. Exceptional deal. Now anybody want a One S for $200?

    • lol 200, try $50 on OzB

  • Shipping information received. :-)
Shipping is via DHL and sent from Oakleigh South VIC.

    • when did you order? I ordered last night and still no shipping.
      Im in vic too!

      • About 5 minutes after the deal went live.
        No updates since then however.

        • Mine updated as "Shipment picked up" yesterday from Oakleigh, with expected delivery on the 27th (it's the 22nd today!). I live in Melbourne, so I'm not sure what's up with that :/

I work at the airport there which is right next to their distribution centre so they said I could pick it up from there once it arrives.

        • @webbiegareth:

Mine was picked up yesterday, and I just got a delivery notification from DHL (eBay hasn’t updated yet though).

        • @guidedlight:

Yeah mine still says in Oakleigh.. no ETA or on road for delivery yet.

        • Mine's still "somewhere" - I would have thought it'd be at the Melbourne gateway by now as it's not that far away from Oakleigh, but oh well!

        • @webbiegareth:

Mine says picked up now with expected delivery tomorrow, sad news for me as I have the next 2 days off work and it's getting delivered to my work :(

RIP me, no weekend play haha.
