New Diners Club Companion Card for Citibank Cards (No Forex, Better Points)

1020

Got this update from Ausbt. New companion card available for citibank card holders. Updated - Official link from theblake

Apparently 10,000 bonus points for adding the card (Can only find information on citibank website for new cardholders only -https://www1.citibank.com.au/credit-cards/citi-signature, rest of might miss out).

The great thing about this is the no foreign currency fees. Diners/Discover acceptance is probably the least common of all cards.

Hopefully good addition to people who got the no fee for life cards a couple of years ago.

I'm not 100% on the convertion, but here's a link (Pretty close to current aud-usd rate) : https://m.dinersclub.com/dcimobileweb/action/CurrencyConvert…

Edit (10/6/2023): I've changed the link to the FAQ for the linked diners club card as the old link is now a 404.

However, Citibank has confirmed to Australian Business Traveller that Linked Diners Club cardholders will not receive access to Diners Club's global airport lounge network, a perk that will remain reserved for cards both issued and serviced by Diners Club, including the Qantas Diners Club Card and the Diners Club personal charge card.

No deal. That is the only reason i would get the Diners club card added to my citibank account

    • +9

Yeah I'd like the have that, but I'm tempted to get it for the no international currency fees (And points earning on that)

      • damn

so really not much incremental benefit to 28 degrees, except reward points?

        • +6

are you serious? high level of reward points on overseas spend for no annual fee is 'really not much'?

    • +3

why is No Forex fees a no deal? It costs you nothing and that is a benefit. 2ppd on the overseas spend as well.

  • +1

Oh wow, no forex fees? Nice one!

  • I take it this is credit card holders only.

  • not having lounge access id a downer. but the reward point earn will be great.. as we travel to the US and Japan frequently.

  • +17

Great deal. I'm on the no fee for life, so this is a no brainer addition.
If you're an existing Citi Holders here's how you request a new card: Login, Hover over 'Services', click 'Card Services', under 'Credit Card Services' click 'Request a Linked Diners Club Card'.

    • Nice one. I'm on the no-fee-for-life offer too. A while ago Citibank started applying a surcharge on PayPal purchases as it's an 'international' merchant - even if paying in AUD. Might go back to linking PayPal and Citibank if I can use the Diners partner card and avoid the surcharge.

  • so existing Citi card holder will get 10k bonus points after activation of the Diners Card, without having to spend on the card?

    • +1

Need to spend within 90 days. Although, I didn't read any minimum spend.

  • Nice !! Thank you!!

  • +1

    Thanks op. Requested mine.

it said along the lines of "if approved" I'll receive it in 7 to 10 days. I hope they won't do a credit check as I'm avoiding unnecessary credit checks since the comprehensive credit reporting started in July.

    • Applying for credit was reported before, and still is being reported. I don't think you should actively avoid credit checks any more so then you should have before the changes.

    • Issued by Diners Club but serviced by Citibank, cardholders have access to a single credit limit across both cards

If you have the same credit limit there might not be a credit check.

    • you have to agree to a credit check before they can do a credit check. Did you agree to one? No you didnt.
So there will be no credit check.

      • +3

I've got 11 cards..don't remember ever seeing an explicit 'do you agree to a credit check' question. Guess it hides in the t&Cs

        • Isn't uncommon that you have to tick something or its quite clearly stated, no one really reads that though lol

        • So Tunzafan001, that just shows you either have a bad memory or you dont read what you are agreeing too!

        • @theblake: I think the later, but I don't remember! Soooooo, anyone read the t&cs and looked for a credit check being present?

        • @tunzafun001:
          On a credit card application?

It usually reads something along the lines of "we may provide your details to a credit reporting agency" in the section about privacy and data handling.

        • @tunzafun001:
it isnt hidden in the T&*Cs its displayed in the bleeding obvious. its the law.
They make you tick a box or press a button, to denote your agreement to it specifically. Always.
Its done that way so nobody could possibly claim "i never agreed to that"

        • @jasonb: in this deal specifically

        • @tunzafun001: nothing in this one, no.

      • -1

My getcreditscore rating dropped from 680 to 630 after getting this card. Coincidence? I don't know. Just saying.

  • +4

Im not a frequent traveller so for me, main purpose would be for points - but does anyone even accept Diners in Australia anymore?
I see it says more common in USA and Asia

    • +2

The super markets and 7/11 do.

You can also add it to paypal, but with xfer rates

      • +1

Could you elaborate on the transfer rates bit?

      • Isn't no foreign currency fees one of the benefits of the card?

  • +1

Thanks OP - was going to cancel my signature card too! Free 10k points is a nice addition!

  • +1

Other than the no-fx, earn rate is pretty poor.

edit: but its free so no downside.

  • annual fee usually $135
    rewards fee usually $77
    http://dinersclub.com.au/individuals.htm

    mastercard forex rates
    diners: 1 AUD = 81.18 JPY
    mastercard: 1 AUD = 81.3 JPY
    as at 22/08/2018
about 0.15% loss, if i move from 28degrees to this card (excl benefit of points)
    seems to be worth it

    • +1

I think it calculates at an hourly basis. This might explain the differences.

      Exchange rate: 81.18167

  • It's not clear to me whether existing cardholders will get the 10k bonus points. Can anyone confirm?

    • I'm not sure on this too. I'd like if citibank put up a website to explain this.

    • Existing Citibank Rewards Platinum, Signature and Prestige cardholders can also contact Citibank to request the Linked Diners Club Card to begin earning points at higher rates, when using the Diners card

This was the paragraph after the 10k bonus points for new members - doesn't look like it's for existing card members.

      • new members as in new citi credit card holders, or new citi account holders (citi plus) ?

EDIT: nvm, just read it. need to apply citi rewards card + diners add-on

        • +1

so it means no good for the current citi card holder? have both signature and citi plus.

        • +1

          @aec:

can add diner for free but no 10k points by the sounds of it

        • +2

@aec: I just asked the same question via their online chat. I also have both signature and citi plus. I can apply for the linked diners club but I won't be eligible for the bonus points.

  • Nice one OP.

  • -1

    So, no annual fees ?

This , or Amex essentials ?

    • Amex essential is good for phone purchases because you get the screen insurance

  • +5

Looks like 10000 bonus points is for the new customers. Check this out.
"New Citibank Rewards customers who opt-in for the Linked Diners Club during their Prestige, Signature or Platinum credit card application can also earn 10,000 bonus Citibank Rewards points after their first Diners Club transaction within 90 days, when applying by March 31 2019."

  • +5

What happens with points if you’re enrolled in the QFF option?

Also note no proximity (paywave/paypass) and no chip means you will need to swipe.

Trying to pay with Diners is going to be embarrassing. Amex is bad enough.

    • +1

Citibank Qantas Rewards members can instead earn one Qantas Point per $1 spent via Diners Club, whether holding a Citi Platinum, Signature or Prestige credit card, with all points awarded on Diners Club spend uncapped, but with the usual exclusions such as no points on government payments.

    • -2

why would you try to pay with the Diners, its a companion card to the Visa not a replacement. Use the Visa.
When you go overseas, especially USA (or pay online) use the Diners, obviously as it has no overseas fees.

There isnt any point trying to use the Diners in Australia. (excepting promos)

      • +1

why would you try to pay with the Diners,

To earn more points on everyday purchases

There isnt any point trying to use the Diners in Australia.

        See above.

        • -2

you wont earn more points with this companion Diners card.

        • +1

          @theblake:

Have you even read the web page?

Earn reward Points faster with a Linked Diners Club Card

Enjoy an uncapped earn rate of 2 Points per $1 spent on all Eligible Transactions
(or 1 Point per $1 spent if you are enrolled in Citi Qantas Rewards).

They is a higher earning of points compared to the Visa card.

        • +2

          @spaceflight:

oh nice one, didnt see that.
but hey, if people dont want to use it, then nobodies forcing them

personally I wont be using it in AU, if someone accepts Diners, they will also accept Amex, and that pays the same or better in points. I see this as an awesome overseas spend card.

  • +2

I tried to call Shi*ybank and as usual, awful customer service. They had no clue what a diners club card was and then no idea about any offer going. Ended up just hanging up

    • same. they are clueless.

    • +1

Typical! I have had the linked diners for a long time and had to cancel it while overseas and boy was that an issue. It had "CITI" on the front of the card but when I called Citibank they didn't know what i was talking about and refused to put me thought to diners to report the card! Couldnt call diners as they only had a 13 number that i couldn't call from the country I was in.

I still have it just for lounge access so need to use it every 12 months otherwise they will can do it. You can only pay for free with direct debit and there are random fees every now and then. I can believe they are still going. Lounge access is good thought 😁

      • Wait. You have a linked diners from Citibank but can access the lounge.

So in theory this one can too?

    • +6

Did you call the premium service team? I have a signature card from when they offered it for free 4+ years ago and whenever I call up the premium card service number, they are actually quite good as far as banks go. The normal phone number is terrible.

    • +3

Why even call them, what else is there to know?
login to your account online and request the Diners add on card. You will see there is no cost.
This is the first day, cant expect every one of the thousands of workers to know all about it already. GIve them a break. When your card arrives in the mail, it will have all the rules and terms with it.

      • I disagree.

Do not release an offer before notifying your staff.

One does not just release an offer on the day and no staff knows about it. What the hell is that?

        • Who said they didnt release it, they likely did notify all the staff, but like every other organisation, there is scores of emails to read every day. Sometimes it takes a while to catchup, especially being a soft launch.

Also, its made pretty clear on the website to call the Premium customer service instead about this product. Try that and you might find that they do indeed know all about it.

    • +2

Hahaha, I think you explained almost every customer service portal any company has.

Caller: Can you tell me about this offer?
Customer Service: Duh, derp What Sir? I do not recall any offer, sorry can you hold for 5 years? Thanks.

  • -2

Can anyone confirm that this linked diners club companion card has no annual fees?

    • -1

      read the article!

  • -3

Sorry can someone explain the benefit of a Diners club card? I have a no fee for life Signature card - what benefit is there in getting this? Better to use overseas?

    Thanks in advance.

  • +2

Excellent about the no Forex. Will probably grab this card on my Fee free for lift Signature card and use the Diners card for any overseas PayPal payments and earn 1 VA point per $.

  • +1

If you're collecting Qantas points, Citibank cards are terrible giving half a point per dollar.

    • +3

Aren't most Visa cards the same?

      • The ANZ black is $1 = 1 point.

      • Yes most visa cards are the same.

  • +4

    Citibank has a website, www.citibank.com.au
or go to google, and search for Citibank, it will be in the first result.

Now here is where it gets tricky.
Click Credit cards. then Citi Signature card.

Also if you click Login, there is a promo thats for existing cardholders and explains how to get it, and all the details.

For advanced internet users, click this URL https://www.citibank.com.au/cards/linkeddiners/

  • Hmm I originally applied for the free for life Signature card, but my card was upgraded to Infinite (no idea why). Infinite is not listed as eligible in the FAQ, even though it would be a platinum card, but not a Prestige card though.

Have put in an online inquiry anyway. Admittedly, I'm not really sure I need the Diners card, but it's free!

    • I managed to apply for one with an Infinite card

    • +1

hi i also have the free signature, just wondering when did they upgrade you for free and did they check your income?

    • +2

Infinite is the name of the Visa programme level.

You do have a Citbank Signature. For some weird reason the card only says Infinite on it (and is in a very generic blue colour).

      • +1

Are there any advantages to an Infinite vs Signature marked card? My free Signature has a terrible earnings rate. It just pads out my wallet now.

        • Not for you I don’t think. Citibank might get a higher merchant fee under some circumstances.

        • I think the infinite gave you Hilton gold access

        • I have no idea what the advantages are. I don't even keep it in my wallet. I was upgraded in 2016. It's not a Prestige card. It looks exactly the same as the Signature card (blue), but in the bottom-right, it says Infinite instead of Signature.

    • I got a direct email today from Citi inviting me to request this Diners card. Follow the same instructions and got the same result as when I first tried to apply for this Diners a week ago. Still have not received a reply from my first online inquiry and have sent another one.

    • Update. Received my Diners Club card in the mail this week. Not sure how it happened given I kept getting error messages when I tried to apply. Not sure what I will actually use this card for and it will probably get stashed away…

  • no chip in the Diners card? no *Pays.
old school swipe transactions, old school.

  • does diners work with google/apple/samsung pay?
i don't want to add another physical card to my wallet

    • Nope. No Chip so no G/A/S pay.

      • Diners doesn't but this is a Citibank card so it could

  • Useful post OP, thanks.

  • Is there anyone also getting the "You are not currently eligible to apply for a Linked Diners Club Card. If you want to discuss this further, please visit contact us." message? =S

  • called up to order one lady was clueless said i could access the diners airport lounge which i think is incorrect is it states its not allowed in the terms. anyone care to try and report back here if they are successful in gaining access the diners airport lounges would be great. she started to process it and then said the system would not let her and that im not eligible. i just logged in online and submitted application myself hopefully it will be accepted. can it be added to paypal to make overseas payments?

ref " What are the fees for the Linked Diners Club Card?
There is no additional fee to have a Linked Diners Club Card. There are no International Transaction Fees when spending overseas. Please note that Standard International Transaction Fees still apply to your Citi Credit Card." what does "Standard International Transaction Fees still apply to your Citi Credit Card." does that simply mean if you use your visa card instead of the diners overseas you will get hit with fees like 3% ?

    • +5

why did you call them? everything is detailed clearly on the Citi website.

    • Yes

  • -1

Can u direct debit from the linked diners to get more points

  • -1

Sorry I don't mean to throw a spanner into the cogwheels

but according to this Australian Citibank Diners Club website it says "Complimentary Lounge Access".

    https://www.dinersclub.com.au/citibank-dining-program.htm

    "Industry leading points earn
    Complimentary Airport lounge access
Diners Club and World MasterCard benefits
    Access to Citibank's Dining Program

And, of course, then there are the rewards."

Are they referring to Citibank Signature cardholders have lounge access or Diners' own lounge access?

    But this one says not…

    https://www.citibank.com.au/cards/linkeddiners/faq.htm

And BPAY not available for Diners. Shucks….

    • I used to have the 'stand alone' Diners Club at $135 per year (I did not pay the rewards fee) and that gave me free lounges.

    • -1

in the t& c s of this offer it states no lougne access and when you call up depending on the monkey you speak to on the phone they give you different answers ie yes you will get access via the main card ie signature perhaps. someone is best to give it a try and report back here if they later get charged on their statement i suspect that they will. for me ill keep using the coles business diners issued card for free access. btw no citibank cards give points on bpay that im aware off.

      • Coles business diners:- "You will need to have an ABN and be in business for more than two years. In certain circumstances, we will require the latest two years' audited financials."

        • thats right need abn and 2 years financials approx income 35k at least i think. but no annual fee so get it while you can coz things may change when coles gets brought out by a USA firm.
