Give it a go and report back.

Keep in mind this kit only makes 8.5L of beer (15L fermenter) and retails for $69, currently $59 + free shipping direct from Coopers.

The Big W kit includes a much larger fermenter and is not comparable.

    • Is there any quality difference among these quantities?

      • +1

The bigger kits are easier if you are brewing from the cans. They are all sized for a ~21L brew, so you'll end up with a heap of waste or leftover in the 15L kits.

If you're planning on doing it from scratch from grain it doesn't matter because you just make as much as you need.

        • I just ordered one of the 23L ones from Dans… can you make a smaller batch in the larger fermenter? ie are there issues with air contact?

        • +1

@snapper: Should be fine, the CO2 produced will displace any oxygen.

My bad! I've been after one for a while, I was just happy it included everything

  • Does it actually make reasonable beer.

    • +3

It's DIY, you make the beer, not it.

The quality is subject to how good a job you do (and partially what combinations you chose to brew).

    • I'd say no. There's a lot more that goes into making decent home brew than may first appear. Still if you want cheap beer home brew is the way to go.

      • Can agree with this statement, however you can definitely make quality beer from just a fermenter kit. It's a good place to start without spending hundreds of dollars

I commented about this 15 litre kit last time.

This kit not really a good buy if you want to continue making home brew beer. The bucket is only 15 litres, which is useless if you want to buy more home brew cans that make around 23 litres (most Coopers cans make 23 litres).
I have been making home brew for over 10 years and the biggest issue for me is the time it takes. So the more beer you can make in one go the better.

You are better off spending more on a good full size kit from a home brew shop. The advice you will get is invaluable. They usually come with a good quality bench capper which makes life a lot easier.

Also the full size kit is on sale @ Dan Murphy's atm for only $40.00 more. and Big W have 20% of their Coopers Range.

    • Would this not be a good, inexpensive way of finding out if this a hobby one would enjoy? I'd like to try home brewing but I'm just looking to dip my toes in atm. Cheers

      • This is where the problem lies I guess as everyone is different. That's probably why they made this smaller kit. Seeing as we are on a bargain site I would say that it's not an economical way of dipping your toes. If you are deciding after making one 8.5 litre brew then you're not really giving it a chance.

If you do the math on how much you can save by making a minimum of 3 brews with 23 litre kits then why not just buy the full size kit.

Another good option is to look on Gumtree or eBay for a 2nd hand kit & the seller will usually throw in a lot of extra stuff like bottles etc.

  • I'd say get the larger big w kit linked above. The initial outlay is more but it makes twice as much beer for the same amount of (profanity) around and all the extract tins come in amounts designed for it
