Westpac Altitude Black Mastercard/AmEx (80k & 40k QFF Points) - $0 Annual Fee First Year » All Comments

  • So the annual fee will be only waived if you apply for both Mastercard and Amex,

    Am I interpreting it correctly?

    • Yes

    • +2

The application process forces you to apply for both. I just chucked the Amex in the bin and used the MC to meet the 3k minimum spend.

      • How did you go about just applying for the MC?

        • +2

I didn't. After filling out the application they send you both cards. I just refused to use the Amex as I was happy with just the 80k points.

        • @railspider: Oh, Right! Thanks

        • +6

@railspider: I don't really understand; why are you refusing 40k points for free?

        • @ely: I'd have to spend an additional $3k on Amex (It's $3k spend per card for 80k+40k points)

There are other cards with better point earn for that sort of spend, and I already have an Amex, so I binned the card.

        • +12

@railspider: Yes, I know it's separate spend, but your earn rate is 40k for $3k, so it's 13.33 per $ - no cards earn anything like that for ongoing spend, so you might as well spend it on the amex and then bin it once you've hit that spend.

Woolies gift cards are at a 5% discount and permit using Amex with no surcharge.

        • @ely: does buying $3k worth of gift cards count toward the reward points?

        • +3

@jjjaar: No one knows you bought gift cards.

          • @jlogic: Has anyone tried and it counted? As these cards usually mention a no cssh equivalentd counted??

        • +2

@jlogic: and after three months the Amex card earns more points..

        • +1

@railspider: don’t forget you get 2 separate credit enquiries also.

        • +1

@ely: Added to that 13.33 points per $, you'd also earn the normal rate of 1.25 per $, so for your $3000 spend you'd get 43,750 points. If you registered for the Qantas 10k bonus (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/395374, now expired for registration, but up until the 20th for your first purchase) then you might also be eligible for an extra 10k as well - it's unclear to me whether the 10k is per person, or per card, and this is two cards so it's possible that you would get 10k for the Mastercard and 10k for the Amex.

      • +1

biggest mistake mate, considering all the amex offer and rewards better to keep it at least for the first year.

      • Why would you throw away the amex card, they have hreat benefits, offers etc and I always use my amex whenever possible.

    • I actually went in-store and applied for the Mastercard alone, and was guaranteed the 80,000 points without having to apply for the AMEX card
They even linked my QANTAS membership and I managed to avoid paying the $50 fee

    • I'll also add that it is not necessary for you to be approved for both cards. You only need to make the application together as a bundle to be eligible. If you are approved with one bank but the other denies you, the waived annual fee and points are still applicable.

Seriously thinking of jumping on this.. now that CBA is killing its AMEX

    • +1

CBA hasn't had a good sign on bonus for years - you should have jumped ship a long time ago!

      • Sign on bonus is irrelevant for an existing customer lol.
But I agree, (profanity) CBA, should have jumped ship ages ago.

        • +1

They have the worst earn rates too, seriously thinking of jumping ship if not for the home loan currently with them..

        • +1

@iversonjack: Jump ship anyway? You can have other CCs even if you have your home loan with CBA (however CBA's home loan rates are also crap, so you should probably jump ship with both the loan and the CC).

    • I only maintained my CBA Amex as it was the last one of the big four banks to keep it (and the fee free overseas transactions). Going to drop it next month when the Amex card is stopped though.

Right now happy to use it while in the Cook Islands though.

  • Good find mate.. In the morning I was looking at this card at https://www.westpac.com.au/personal-banking/credit-cards/ame…

There they haven't waived the $250 fee.

The only additional benefit in this is Priority Pass Membership to airport lounges, and receive two complimentary lounge visits per year to use at over 1000 VIP airport lounges worldwide. (But that is not worth $250 fee)

  • Are the card accounts linked? Do I have to spend $3000 between the two? or is it $3000 on each making it a $6000 spend in 90 days?

  • +1

Tempted but pretty put off about the 2 credit checks on your record.

    • +1

Likewise, can anyone else confirm that this is the case?

      • +7

I applied and have both cards.. confirmed its 2 credit checks on my file. They're separate cards.

        • +3

It is 2 credit Checks. Dropped down 102 points :(

        • +1

@Spizz: where do you guyz check it?

    • Are you able to elaborate? How would the additional credit check affect me? Thanks!

      • It only affects you if you are planning to get a home loan soon. Also too many credit cards applications might get a rating going down and you might get rejected later on.

        • Ah thanks, I’ll have to keep that one in mind :)

    • +1

I got approved for both but only had one credit check (with Westpac). Although I do have an existing Amex card, so maybe that makes a difference.

  • I got it just in time to make the last deal! now I just have to find stuff to make the minimum spend!

    • +2

Likewise - would have preferred to hold off, because I also just got Virgin's 120k bonus one and now have a pretty busy three months of spending to meet 15k of minimum spend. Luckily/unluckily I'm sure my wife will have no problem hitting those targets.

      • E gift card on cash rewards for woolies? Might be an option? Yep usually we make sure we don't overlap our min spending requirements.

        • Yeah, egift cards, prepay utilities, buy shares, then use a 0% balance transfer from the Virgin card to pay them off ;) Won't be a problem, just needs to be managed right.

        • +1

@ely: how do you buy shares using a cc?

        • @jimmynewts: IG permits it (surcharges apply, reasonably low for Mastercard though) - see https://www.ig.com/au/fund-your-account

        • @ely: On that topic though, they normally only refund money from a card back on to the same card, but I've discussed it with support and they said that if you can prove ownership of the card and of the account the money is going to (e.g. via statements) then they'll refund it to another account. I haven't actually tried this, but I have (over time) funded ~$10k of shares via CC.

          • @ely: how interesting! And you haven't had any issues buying shares with CC and it being 'eligible' money for the purposes of bonus rewards?

So could one simply buy $6k of shares ($3k on each card) to meet the points for here?

However, when you go to sell your saying the official rule is to refund it back onto the CC you bought with?? Which you haven't proven yet if you can actually have the sold shares settled into another bank account (incase you wish to close your credit card or not spend anymore on it to offset the refunded amounts)?

          • @ely: how's the brokerage/use of IB anyway? Are your shares held in trust? Or directly in your name?

            • @SaberX: I've bought IG shares with ANZ and was rewarded points for them; wasn't required for bonus spend, but generally if you earn points then it's eligible (some caveats around government spend depending on card provider). I can't guarantee that Westpac and Amex would be the same (I suspect that they'll have different criteria for each card, but I don't think IG would stand out as an exception to them).

Correct, the official rule is that they refund to the same card. I chatted with the support for a while and they said that if you could prove ownership of both the card topped up with and the destination bank account (e.g. via statements with your details matching your details with them) then they'd be able to authorise that.

Brokerage is extremely cheap, either the cheapest available or near it ($8 minimum fee, lower % rate vs other providers for larger orders).

I believe they're held in trust, which is common internationally (as I understand it) and probably allows costs to be lowered (no actual exchange necessarily needs to be made if they have clients on both sides of a trade, allowing them to retain all fees with no expenses). I'm OK with it.

  • +1

There's a platinum card for the plebs that don't earn the average salary (cough***cough)

    • +5

LOL. So this is how plebs are getting into business class!

    • Where is the minimum salary requirements on the Westpac website? I can't seem to find it

Also does the platinum offer of 60k points actually waive the $50 Qantas frequent flyer fee like the black card?

      • I think the black one is 75k income minimum
re the platinum offer I did the 75+15 and the $50 were waived too

  • still waiting for my bonus ppoints…….

    • same boat. fingers crossed its coming on the third statement.

    • for the MC or AMEX? Once i spent the $3k on AMEX, the 40k bonus was mentioned and creditted to my QFF account surprisingly quickly. I've just spent the 3k on MC, but will not find out til next statement if they are as quick to honour the 80k QFF straight away. Hope they come thru for you!

      • On my Westpac MC, I got the bonus points on the statement that I made the spend and they were also credited to my account straight away. Still waiting on me AMEX points.

    • same - no bonus points for either too after so hopefully comes through in the 3rd statement

    • I think it takes about 12 weeks before you'll receive the bonus points for the MC card

  • When do the points come through?

    • For the MC card

The bonus Qantas Points will be added to your points balance within 12 weeks once you meet the eligible spend criteria.

      For the AMEX card

Bonus Points will be awarded to the eligible Card Member’s account 8-10 weeks after the spend criteria have been met.

    • for the amex I got the bonus just after spending the amount and Amex said they will appear on my qantas 6-7 days before the next statement.

  • +4

I already got this card (not black) from the previous deal, received QFF 75k and closed the account yesterday.
Personally I think westpac creditcard was one of the worst in terms of convenience, ie) no applypay and terrible app, collecting the card in person at branch, etc. I will not open an account with westpac again.

    • +2

I received my cards last week, I too had to collect it from a branch however my mrs got hers in the post. No problems with the app though

    • I applied last week and got the card in the mail 2 days after approved. Very fast

  • Closed my ANZ black recently, might be time for my next application..

  • +1

I recently got my westpac platinum altitude card, can I still apply for this card and get the deal?

    Thank you

    • There's an exclusion period of 12 months I believe.

  • +5

Might jump on this - $7000 worth of braces for the daughter coming up in October, might get the wife to do it too and split the cost over the 2 cards … $160K points!

    • +2

might get the wife to do it too

      Braces?

      • +3

        Dental plan!

      • Jeezus - one set is enough!
Even with private health I'll hit tle lifetime limit on this one!

  • I received the 40k points after min spend but still waiting for the 80k from the Mastercard. I've been told this only gets credited after 90 days? Also I've just realised you have to Opt-in and then spend money with Qantas to receive the lounge passes, does anyone know if there's a minimum spend?

  • As soon as my points come through for ANZ Black, I'll jump on this for all the xmas spending and insurance bills.

    • You don't notice much height difference though :)

  • When they said no annual fee first year. Does that mean calender year? So from 1 Jan 2019 they will charge a fee.

Or one year from date of approval?

    • 12 month from approval

      • thanks

  • Does the Amex black incurs additional $150 annual fee?

    • No all free the first year

  • Does anyone knows how to transfer the rewarded points to QFF? It's showing on my AMEX account but not on QFF account.
    Thanks!

    • +1

They transfer once a month, may be your spending missed the boat. Wait until this month.

      • When we called and added the supplementary card, they told us the date of the month when it would get transferred. And sure enough, that day + 1 day was when processed transactions + the supplementary card bonus appeared in QFF. So you can always call them and ask what your day of the month is for points being transferred.

    • +1

Should be automatically I believe patience is your friend

    • I asked today, they said 6-7 days prior the statement.

  • How soon after you've received the cards can you make use of the AMEX Lounge?

    • After you activated.

      • Do I need to have bought the flights on the card or just get 2x passes as long as I activate?

        • +1

Flights on the MC are for QANTAS lounge entries. You also get 2 x AMEX lounge entries on the AMEX cards without any purchase required.

  • I applied for these cards last month via Qantas (qantas.com/cards). At the time, Qantas had a promotion of additional 10K points if registering/applying through their website. I am not sure if this promotion is still available. Anyway, I got email from Qantas confirming that I am registered and will send me the points after 12 Sept.

I normally apply for cards around this time of the year due to council rate, car registrations, insurance … Yesterday, I got 40K points from Amex in Amex account, not sure when they will be transferred. I haven't seen any from Westpac.

  • Is the usual procedure to sign up for this, rack up the spending and cancel the cards before the year is up? Otherwise It;s about $450 in fees?

    • +2

correct, spend the required amount. Cancel the card before the 12 months is up

    • Yes, exactly

      • +2

Thanks! I am still on a L plate when it comes to OZBARGAIN!

  • +1

Just need to watch out for your credit score as you get hit twice for both cards. My score is now below 650 so I have to wait a bit longer before I can apply another credit card.

    • I've been wondering what the impact is to credit rating for having so many credit cards, let alone switching eery 12 months. Are you able to elaborate? And where do you check?

      • +1

I pay for the Equifax service and monitor mine.

The score gradually rises every few months of not applying for a credit card, but if you cancel one, it gets a sudden boost.

I tried applying with a 670 score at one point, and got rejected.

So switching cards every year is fine, but try not to do too many applications within a 3-6 month period.

  • Hi. My understanding is that St George and Westpac are one and the same. If I have just cancelled a St George card am I in the "12 month waiting period before being eligible for the Qantas points" for Westpac as well?

    • +2

They aren't one and the same - Westpac is the parent company of their subsidiary St George.

They may cross streams at times (such as branches, services, etc) but as a customer, you belong to one or the other, or both. But they don't exclude you from using the others services.

      • Brilliant - thank you

  • If I had an existing American express card, would I get the 40k if I applied for this bundle?

    • +2

Yes. I have a platinum edge Amex card and have confirmed with a consultant that you can

  • would I be eligible to get the points if I have existing card with Westpac (Altitude Platinum)??

    • +3

"Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Altitude Platinum Visa Card or Altitude Black Mastercard, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer."

      • +1

For what it's worth, I made the mistake of signing up for the Altitude Platinum Visa/Amex cards yesterday. Approved but not sent yet. I was told on the phone that I could wait until the cards come, apply to upgrade to the black package (no additional credit queries but a higher limit required) and still receive the 120k bonus points. That may be relevant to others.

  • These cards have no interest free periods?!

    • I clarified with Westpac. They do indeed has a 45 day interest free period, but they forgot to put it on the website.

  • Needing some advice: Should I apply for this double card or better off applying for ANZ black?

    • Anz black is not free anymore this deal is the best at the moment

      • Thanks for that =)

      • +3

Actually ANZ is available with no annual fee currently BUT the catch is you need to have an ANZ account already, and you need to follow the link via ANZ internet banking -> Apply -> Credit cards -> scroll down to the "ANZ Frequent Flyer cards" section, and the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black and ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum are both listed with no annual fee.

        • +2

I can confirm I took this approach by first applying for a saver account. Once that was done within a few hours, I logged in and applied for the ANZ Black. The 75k QFF has now been registered…waiting for it to sweep in to the Qantas platform now.

        • @Aussie Frequent Liar: I know it's off topic but..what is the minimum income for the ANZ black

    • If you also want the Amex perks then do not go with ANZ.

      • What are the AMEX perks?

        • More points per dollar spent, shop small thing in November…

  • is it similar travel insurance as amex?
no access fee for airplane/travel delay?

  • Damn, I rushed my application in for the last one and then got denied… hahaha

    oh well.

  • 2x free pairs of RM's?

  • Does this also waive the $50 fee for redeeming Qantas points?

    • +2

      yes it's all free

  • I was declined this card end of July. Can i applied for this again say in Novermber?
    My credit Score is ~640

    • +2

If your financial situation has changed. Eg got a new higher paying job, then you may have a chance to successfully apply. If nothing has changed then I would not bother.

      • I had a mortgage back in July which i "forgot" to mention in my application because it was in the process of transfer.
Now i no longer have a mortgage to pay and i do want the card soon because my ANZ card annual fee is less than a month away.

  • Does anyone know or have any experience if having a supplementary card in your name (both MC and AMEX) disqualifies you for the sign up bonus if you subsequently open your own account?

    • It does not disqualify you. Only the Primary Cardholder is subject to exclusion periods.

  • I currently have Bankwest platinum mastercard & Amex platinum edge. Can I still apply for these cards?

  • I signed up but it was extremely glitchy. Some of my colleagues were audited too despite supplying all the details and exceeding the minimum income required. Hope I get my points as a few people on WP said that even though you link your card to QFF you still need to call up.

  • +1

Can someone please tell me if they ask for proof of income during the application? I'm starting a new job very soon after months off so don't have anything recent, but I want to use it asap to pay for some upcoming bills.

    • +1

Yes they ask the last 2 payslips

    • Yeah, they give the option of either sending them the last 2 payslips, or letting them log into your bank account to confirm regular income payments.

    • Cool thanks for the answers

  • Is this the best deal out there currently - i want to purchase some flights & holiday that i will instantly pay off but i want the extra point and then probably keep the card for 6 months and cancel.
Is this good in my case?

    • Remember, you get complementary travel insurance if you pay for your flights using this card, so worth keeping it until after the travel (provided that is less than 12 months away)

      • Yep definitely, 1st credit card so trying to be extremely cautious.

        • No worries, I was there not long ago.
Definitely take advantage of it! I'd buy the flights+holiday stuff, then pop it in a draw with a reminder to cancel a couple of weeks before the next years fee is charged.

    • definitely the best at the moment 120k for free it's not often

  • I can't see how to add additional card holders as part of the application process.

Can this be done or do I need to do it later?

  • Thanks OP. Jumped on this as I have over 6K in renovation stuff to pay for and an OS trip in Feb.
Just got approved so this is big help.

  • Does anyone know if paying tax to ATO count towards the eligible spending? Thanks!

    • I called westpac with this question and the answer was a definite no. But if you look at the terms and conditions it just says cash advances, balance transfers etc are not eligible, no mention about ATO..

      • +1

Yeah, the exclusions do not mention anything about government fees, such as rates, rego and tax…
        AMEX
        Bonus points promotion:
Eligible purchases do not include cash advances, interest, balance transfers, fees and charges for traveller’s cheques and foreign currencies.

        Qantas Points:
0.5 Qantas Point for every $1 spent at government bodies in Australia such as Australia Post & the Australian Taxation Office.

        Master
        Bonus points promotion:
Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, BPAY, BPAY equivalent transaction, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

        Rewards Points:
You do not earn Qantas Points on payments to the Australian Taxation Office.

From previous post someone mentioned that:
“I spoke with AmEx regarding whether council rates were applicable.

They said anything will count towards the minimum spend as long as it's not annual fee charge, interest charges or anything related to charges from the card itself.”

but I didn't found feedbacks whether they got the bonus points or not. So it is still a bit unclear. Maybe I should bite the bullet and try…

        • Thanks for the clarification. I have my rates and car rego due so they will easily help get me over the line!

  • I received an approval email yesterday from Westpac but haven't received anything from Amex yet. Has anyone else?

    • My Amex approval came through minutes after the Mastercard one.

      • sigh, that is what I was afraid of. I think their system has a lot of glitches in it and randomly does not submit the application to Amex

        • Hi Introspective. Did you end up hearing back from Amex? I got immediate approval from Westpac yesterday but havent heard back from Amex in the last day.

          • +1

            @ttam87: Yes I did.

I applied on a Friday and got the instant conditional approval from Westpac but nothing from Amex.

I received a call from Westpac the following Tuesday to ask a question about my application. As soon as I answered the question I received another instant email/text from Westpac telling me the that I was now unconditionally approved. 2 mins later I received a email/text from Amex advising I was approved by them as well.

2 days later I received a call from my local Westpac branch advising the card was ready to pick up. The Amex card was waiting for me in the mail when I got home.

            • @Introspective: Thanks for replying. Thats good news.

Ive already been properly approved by Westpac on Thursday (one conditional approved email and then one approved email a bit later). But have heard nothing from Amex. Will call them on Monday.

              Thanks again

              • @ttam87: Hi ttam87, did you hear back from Amex? I'm on the same boat as you, approved by Westpac but no news from Amex yet. Westpac's approval email said that they passed the application to Amex already.
                Thanks for any feedback.

                • @Shopping Fig: Yep. So they said in the Westpac email they sent the details to Amex. I called Amex and they said they didnt receive anything, and to check with Westpac to see if they didnt reject my amex application in their preliminary screening. So i checked with Westpac again and they said they didnt reject the amex application, so they will write an email to Amex and get them to call me, otherwise to call Westpac back again and they can try and escalate it.

Its a huge stuff around, and I dont have much hope that Westpac and Amex will care to sort it out amongst themselves. We'll see how we go.

I got more help from the second operator when i called Westpac the second time (ie they offered to send an email to amex, while the first operator said "sorry we cant help"), so your luck may vary when you call them.

                • @Shopping Fig: Let me know how you go sorting it out, and if you get a different answer to me.

                  • @ttam87: Thanks. I called Amex yesterday and, oh surprise, they couldn't find my application, but they told me that sometimes Westpac takes a few days to send the applications through. Westpac told me that they don't have control over that application and I need to deal directly with Amex (according to Westpac they sent the application to Amex already, but it sounded like a blank statement not something checked on their systems).
I might call again this arvo and see what is the story this time.
P.S.: The Amex guy told me that if I was approved for the MC, then 99% of the time the Amex application gets approved as well (threshold is lower?)
                    I'll keep everyone posted. Cheers.

                    • @Shopping Fig: Thanks for the reply. Thats exactly what I was told. I reckon try calling Westpac again and get them to email Amex (even though i havent heard back from Amex yet after Westpac emailed them 2 days ago). It seems like we are not the only ones in this thread with this issue either.

                      • @ttam87: Update: Called Amex again, same story, no application under my name and Westpac's Ref No is not good on their system (can't get dumber than this).
Called Westpac again, according to them application has been sent through, but they will send an email to Amex to check what's the issue (I asked them to CC me on the email but they are not allowed to).
Finally, the guy told me to call them (Westpac) again if I don't hear from Amex in the next couple of days.
                        What a moronic system.

                        • @Shopping Fig: Hey. I called Amex and Westpac again today. Same story as before. I got Westpac to send another email to Amex. I also sent a written complaint to Westpac and mentioned that i will escalate it to the financial ombudsman if they do not resolve the issue. So we'll wait and see.

                          • @ttam87: Hey, so an email from Amex arrived this morning (1 am) saying that they received my application and they will let me know the outcome in 5-10 business days (really?). I think they were waiting for daylight saving to kick in.

As a reference for the others suffering this glitch, I got approved on Tuesday, Westpac sent an email to Amex on Thursday (after I called them a couple of times, thanks ttam87 for the tip) and Amex email received on Sunday. Now to wait and see if I get approved. Good luck.

On a separate note, I realised I gave Westpac my wife's QFF number instead of mine, has anyone been able to change QFF numbers without affecting their bonus points and lounge passes? Otherwise I'll just keep using my wife's number (although she cannot be trusted with those) and family transfer them later. Cheers.

                            • @Shopping Fig: Update: Another email from Amex at 10 am asking for proof of income (which I already gave Westpac, so they didn't pass that information to Amex).

I sent the information already, let's wait and see.

                              • @Shopping Fig: Thanks for getting back to me. That's great news!

I still haven't received an email from Amex, but now there's a bit of hope.

My application process started earlier than yours (in late September), so that's a bit concerning. Will wait and see.

                              • @Shopping Fig: Ok just got the standard Amex email. Finally.

                                • @ttam87: who have you guys been emailing/calling?

Same boat, main CC all approved and sitting at the bank, zero email re amex approval, so its likely its stuck in limbo and I need someone to poke it with a stick.

                                  • @SBOB: and with that, i finally got an email/sms about approval

Seems there must have been some backlog in the Westpac->Amex pipe ;)

                                    • @SBOB: re: amex got acknowledgment email yest, got approval today

keep calling westpac applications department and then escalate to customer experience manager if necessary

                                • +1

@ttam87: That's great. Based on the other messages below, it seems that Westpac and Amex got their sh… stuff together now.

Note: After providing the additional info Amex requested, I got a call from them confirming some of my details before getting approved.

                                  Cheers

  • Advice please…..I applied for the black altitude card which arrived yesterday, but I have realised that I would have been better off with the platinum as 5here is no $250 fee. My husband has the black bundle so I really only want the card for the bonus points and would be better not paying for the privilege.
Am I likely to be accepted for the platinum card when I have just received the black? Is there a way of canceling that card so it doesn’t affect my application?

    • This bundle has no fee provided you can meet the spending requirements $3000 in 3 months per card.

And no, unfortunately, you won't be able to apply for the platinum card AND receive the bonus points since you just got approved for the black one. Your credit searches have already been done and applied

  • +1

Yes .. paying rate on the council website do count toward the 3k spend. I have recieved the 40k bonus points from amex.. still nothing from westpac … amex provide much better services and you can check all the points through the app and they transfer it to qantas very promptly…

  • +3

Not a bad offer. Applied, got cards, hit the required limits, got the 120k Qantas points, closed account all in less than two months ha

Sold points at 1.5c as well. Nice easy $1800 + applied for the $50 free for a new bank account. I hate Westpac, so feels good to of used them.

  • how do you sell the points at 1.5c?

    • Fraudulently??

      • I sold them to a Cousin… So a family transfer

        • something I am always wondering, why people buy points ?

  • Does westpac give out different card number to primary card holder when applying for a secondary amex card?

    • Yes

  • Is there balance offer on this card?

    • I mean balance transfer offer.

  • I signed up for this and was approved over the weekend however when I signed up I opted for the Altitude rewards program rather than Qantas, does this mean I will get 120k Altitude points?

I see Altitude points only convert to Velocity at 2:1 so the 120k bonus points would only be worth 60k Velocity vs Qantas.

Note - I am a Velocity collector usually but would still take the 120k Qantas over the 60k Velocity.

    Can anyone shed any light?

    Thanks

    • That is correct. Maybe you can ask to change?

    • This was my issue. Hence my comment above, I sold the Qantas points (has risks) and then used that to upgrade or buy Velocity. Not a bad trade seeing as sold the Qantas ones for 1.5c and bought Velocity at 1c :p

All up, got the card, sold 120k Qantas points, bought 180k Velocity.

      • Sounds like you just ripped off your cousin. I'd love to be in your family

        • +1

Cousin is the family term used to transfer the points. 😂 So people can sell them and not violate Qantas T&C. If it was true family it would of been free.

    • In similar boat. New to the points game, so chose altitude as read a comment saying it was more flexible, which while true, seems to offer less in terms of overall value than qff.

Not planning to spend the money for another month or so. Hoping someone has called up to find out if we can switch, otherwise I'll get on it sometime this week when I'm free.

      • I made the same mistake. Called Westpac and they switched to QFF for me. They charged me $50 however, they gave me a link to join QFF for free. I don't know if the free joining was always part of the deal for non-QFF members.

Called Amex and they did the switch, no fee. Both told me to wait up to 10 days. Westpac told me to call them to check as there's no prompt on their side while Amex said they will call me when it happened.

Both says there will be no back dating and I'll be earning Altitude points till the switch. Both says once I meet the $3K spend on each card, the sign-up bonus will be rewarded on what current rewards program I am on. So I'll be waiting a couple of weeks till I book my Japan trip.

  • They didn't send my Amex application through. Do I still got the 80k bonus and annual fee waiver

    • did they tell you why ? my understanding is that the offer is only for the bundle even if you don't use your amex

      • It just mentioned I didn't meet the criteria so they aren't passing it on to Amex

        • sorry missed that. Maybe call westpac to confirm :)

        • Done that, guy on phone said I get fee waived and 80k points but felt like he didn't know about the bundle requirement

  • Got approved and noticed that annual fee is listed as the following;

"$250.00 annual fee. Charged to your account following the first cash advance or credit purchase transaction and charged to your account in subsequent years on or after the anniversary of the first charge."

Doesn't say anything about it being waivered for the first year but I'm assuming that's just because it's a generic email for the card?

  • Why is QBX12 in the original post? Is that a code I should put somewhere?

    • +1

It's the code that is automatically injected by the promo link needed to trigger the bonus. It's not necessary if you straight up follow the link and don't browse away/pause and resume your application.

  • Jumped on thanks!

  • received the 80000 points into QFF account day after the statement following $3k spend. no delay, all good.

    • hmm mine hasn't hit, had two statements already totalling 3k…both already paid for too.. might have to ring them.

  • I have 2 questions if anyone can help?

First one is easy - how do you claim the lounge vouchers?

Second question - this is my first Amex card and I can’t believe how few places take Amex (can’t pay rego or rates which was my first strategy) or those that do charge such high surcharges it does not seem worth using the card (ie car service the other day had a 2.55% surcharge for Amex).

The only option it seems is food shopping but we order our shopping online with coles using a coles MasterCard so avoiding the $10 delivery cost. Not sure it’ll pay to use Amex for 3 months to achieve the minimum spend as I reckon I’ll spend an extra $120 on delivery costs. Not sure I’m going to be able to achieve the minimum spend…

    • Really? I had no issue using my Amex to pay rates by using postbillpay and paypal.

You really aren't trying hard enough if you think an Amex is that useless/difficult to charge to. It's my primary card, I only fall back to a visa or MC if I really have to and I let the merchant know that it matters. I've never had nearly that much trouble finding places that accept Amex for day to day expenses (or that don't charge high surcharges).

That said, your choice of supermarket purchase scheme removes a very prominent amount of spend for me - I use my amex without any surcharges both at Coles and Woolworths and could have almost (maybe even) made the min spend off that alone.

      • Am I missing something? Post bill pay only accepts visa and MasterCard not PayPal or Amex?

        https://paypaperbills.postbillpay.com.au/postbillpay/pay/def…

        • Some electricity providers accept payment via PayPal, you can add Amex at PayPal and make payments that way.

Amex is my primary card as well. Only at rare instances I have to pay via visa or master card.

        • Yes, you are

          https://www.postbillpay.com.au/help/payment-methods

You can use Visa or MasterCard credit cards, Visa or MasterCard debit cards, Diners Club and American Express charge cards or PayPal to pay bills with Post Billpay*. Some billers do not accept all payment types.

Type in the biller details as it prompts you to and it will show accepted payment methods.

      • Would purchasing say $1k of grocery gift cards on the amex count as $1k of the $3k eligible spend? One might not need the groceries now but they would definitely be able to use that over the course of the year. Meanwhile they'll satisfy the 30 day min spend .

  • Excuse this dumb question, I'm new to the whole credit card thing - but my income is a few thousand less than the minimum. Should I apply for this card or should I not even bother? I've never had a credit card before.

    • +1

Your move but I've applied for a number of cards where I was below the 'minimum income requirement' and was fine. With that said, I'm in a good financial position with no debt and a decent savings account. I've also owned lower income credit cards in the past and have no bad credit history.

      • Cheers for the reply. I applied and just then got approved so it looks like the "minimum income requirement" isn't a hard and fast rule. I'm also in a similar position to you - no debt, a lot of savings and a high credit rating.

        • Also in similar position. May I ask, around what amount is considered “a lot of savings”.

  • finally got around to applying.
submitted income stuff but no emails yet re application number etc

    their system seems slow? :/

  • Do I put the "QBX12" in anywhere?

    • no should be automatically there when you click on the link

  • Is anyone having problems applying for this? It get stuck at the please wait and the circle keep spinning for a long time.

  • Not happy with Westpac. I have been approved and have been using this card for nearly 2 weeks, but still haven't heard anything from Amex. I've called up Westpac three times now who insist they have sent my details to Amex, but when I call Amex they have zero records of me in their system. Westpac are now saying they've sent an email to ask Amex what's going on and to keep waiting.

    Really annoyed.

    • Did you get the email saying they sent your details to Amex?

      • Yes, it was in the final approval email:

We have also given American Express your application details for the American Express® Westpac Altitude card for their assessment. They will contact you directly regarding your application.

    • This exact same thing has happened to me too. They sent an email to Amex yesterday and now im waiting to hear from Amex.

    • Same here. I haven't called that many times yet, but it seems I'm going to suffer the same fate. I'll try to get Westpac to send the email to Amex as you guys did to see if this speed things up. Cheers.
Any updates please post them here.

    • Finally got the approval email from Amex. How about everyone else? Maybe it was "stuck".

  • So got unconditional approved for mastercard, and got the card from branch; however AmEx didnt receive application yet even though westpac tells me they have already sent. Westpac emailed Amex so waiting to get an update.

How do I get the most out of the deal other than to sell QFF points - can I sell the complimentary lounge passes? How do I receive them? I have already activated Mastercard and bought 50 cents carbon offset using mastercard so not sure what else can I do. Thanks

    • You go on holidays :)
We booked 3 flights bne per for $249 + points

    • Hi, same thing is happening to me. My MC is ready to be picked up, but no sign of the Amex card.
wondering if you still got your annual fee waived on the MC?

      • They havent charged anything yet on the card so I am not sure whether it will be waived.

In relation to AmEx, applied on my partner's behalf a week after mine and she already has got the approval so I am sure Westpac stuffed up the application to AmEx - will wait to see how it goes tomorrow.

  • Just to confirm as it is unclear to me - do you get the Qantas lounge passes by purchasing absolutely anything on the qantas website? So gift cards etc? I don't want to book a flight direct through them if i can avoid it as it is cheaper to get it elsewhere…

  • I cancelled my Westpac Amex card back in April 2018 when it flipped over to the AMEX backed version. I decided to not take up the X,000 point Amex offer at the time.
I was wondering if anyone in a similar situation has since applied for the cards and gotten someone from Westpac to confirm that you will get the points for both Amex and bank issued cards if you meet the spend criteria?
The reason why I’m asking is because of that usual caveat they have about not having a credit card with the bank before within the last 12 months.
As I only had a BANK issued (Westpac) Amex before then I’m going to assume the the AMEX issued one will grant me points. (Hopefully).
The question is if I will get the points for the BANK issued card as well.
    Any thoughts guys?
[Edit] Might answer my own question. According the the link:
Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Altitude Platinum Visa Card or Altitude Black Mastercard, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

    • Im the opposite. I still have an amex issued card and am wondering if this westpac card given its issued by amex is eligible for the 40k bonus points

  • I applied last weekend and got approval ook n Monday. I have not heard back from Amex or Westpac after that.
How many days before card is delivered to westpac and if I had to call Amex like many other users?

  • Hi, I just found the 'QBX12' code now.

I applied cards and I already got them.

I'm just wondering did I have to put the code somewhere when I apply the cards?

or I don't need to worry about it?

    Thank you guys

    • +2

If you applied from the link from the deal. It automatically applies the code.

  • Anyone still waiting on the bonus points from their Amex? Got the ones from the MC ages ago.

    • Are they showing on the amex website? Usually they appear as soon as you hit the minimum spending and then 5-6 days before the statement they are transferred to your qantas account.

    • For anyone else, I had to ring Amex.
The CSR thought they might not have been applied since I already had another Amex.
But she checked the terms of the promotion and there's nothing about already being an Amex customer in there, so then she wasn't sure why I didn't get them.
In the end she applied them to my account manually.

  • In my case, they emailed AMEX last Thursday, called AMEX today, my name is not in their System, round and round we go…

    • Call Westpac and they will escalate it to Amex.
I got approval email after 1 day of contacting westpac.

  • Does anyone know where in the westpac site I can check all the qantas points earned? I can easily find it in AMEX site… but not in westpac

    • Same question

      • I called Westpac and asked, and they said if its qantas points, there is nowhere on the website you can track points earned. You can only track once they transfer to qantas and track it from there…

  • Called up Amex about my application. Suprise, surprise. They couldn't find my application.

And then 2 days later, without me calling Westpac to chase up, received an email from Amex saying my application has been approved.

Maybe Westpac submit the Amex application in batches?

  • My application was refused with an over all assessment with no details explaination. Try chasing up last few months for the real reason but they could not give me one. What a joke westpac. And my lastest credit score is high 700s.

    • Try chasing up last few months for the real reason but they could not give me one. What a joke westpac.

pretty standard… you'll never get a reason why you arent approved for credit

not really a 'joke' though, as its not like its a right to have banks lend you money

      • Apparently because i don't bank with them, so have no history thus they rejected my application. Not sure how they are gaining new customer

        • I am sure, many people who have applied here don't bank with them.

        • Unless you have no credit history at all then I assume you put something unfavourable in your sign up info.

  • Can two complimentary Qantas lounge passes be used by the card holder and the companion when travel together? And same question to two complimentary Amex lounge passes?

    • Yes and yes

      • TA!

    • What about kids?

      • +1

Complimentary access is available for the Card Member’s children between the ages of 2-17.

  • It doesn't look like the $250 MC fee is waived anymore. Does anyone have a link where it is waived?

Edit: Nevermind, it's working now. Thanks for the deal!

  • hi I applied for this deal via the main westpac website. got the MC card yesterday - still waiting for Amex approval.. I only found out about this deal yesterday.. Anyone has any luck calling Westpac to waive the annual fees despite not applying thru this deal?? is it worth trying you reckon?

    • Call them and see if it works.

    • My friend did that, and got the fees reversed… Just tell them you went through the above link however the code must have gotten deleted when you saved to finish your application at a later time… Doesn't hurt to try

  • how to get the lounge passes? I've got a bronze QFF account. is that enough?

  • Just got hit with the annual fee and Qantas fee. What were the conditions for this again? I managed to get the annual fee waived, I'm just wondering if I should try for thy Qantas fee too.

    • di you apply through this website's link? qantas should be free too

      • Yep did it through this link. I'll give them a call again

  • Anyone looking to unload Qantas points pm me please. In search of a cheap flight to the states around xmas time

  • How long does it usually take to receive the card once approved?

also I've noticed a few people saying how they had issues with Westpac having their QFF number on file or something like that… Is there a way I can easily check this once I receive my card?

  • Just to clarify - the link from ozbargain allows you to have both cards waived for annual fee?

I went through pointhacks's website and i notice the main westpac page waives your amex fee but you still have to pay the initial annual fee (+ qantas reward fee) for the mastercard. which is about $250 for annual fee and it seems qantas reward program costs $50 even though presumably one is already a qantas member???

Does anyone know if gift cards count as eligible spend towards the $3k in terms of stocking up on coles or woolies gift cards to make the minimum spend, and then just using these over the future year ahead?

    • Points hack site has same card, but different fees. You need to apply using the link given in this deal which applies a code.

Regarding gift card spending, I don't have an answer sorry.

      • All good! I wonder if the link here is ozbargain offered or lifted off elsewhere? Either way i accepted!

  • I spent 3K but only got 2K points and no bonus points.

  • Can anyone comment on what minimum credit limit your forced to take for both cards??is it 15k credit limit a pop?? As i noticed anz ff black and st george amplify signature all force you to take the 15k limits. So obviously 30k in credit will take a fair bit to approve.

    • they seem very 'generous' with their credit limits (crazyily so)

I got approved for a total combined credit limit, including the other couple of cards i told them I already had, for ~50% of my annual salary

that seems like very flexible lending criteria

      • Hmmm very generous! How long from document verification to receiving the cards?

        • Mastercard, 1 day approval, pickup in branch a week later.
Amex was more like 2 week approval, in the mail a day or 2 later.

          • @SBOB: Great thanks. Just got my annual home insurance etc i can pay now otherwise if i get it asap. Do they only do pickups instore??

I hope the amex points bonus works given i have direct amex issued platinum edge card already…

    • 15k for westpac is minimum…. 3k for amex is minimum… I requested the minimum on my application

      • Thanks. Requested 15k and 3k minimum too. .conditionally approved.

I read on point hacks website but couldnt see mention on westpac that if you owned an amex issued card you were still eligible as this is a westpac amex issued by amex. Hope so…. would suck to rack up the 3k spend and get no points.

        • I confirmed with Amex that that was the case… and I got my 40k points for amex spend… I last cancelled an amex card in August.

          • @loverofbargains: I just spoke to westpac today as well. I was told no then yes haha. Lady was not great with english but at end i gave plenty of details and reiterated my amex was amex issued also but applied for this one through westpac.

In end when i rang amex as well (im trying to get both cards expressed as i have some big purchases this week) and they confirmed the 40k points were attached.

Now the hard part. The spend. Amex lady couldnt confirm if buying gift cards while grocery shopping would count though.

        • I had 2 AmEx already and this is my 3rd. They all show up nicely in the AmEx app - the first 2 earning membership rewards points and now this one QFF obviously. It literally took one business day from me hitting the $3k spend for my bonus points to show up. Will keep the card for Shop Small next month and then I’ll cancel it.

  • got given 60k limit for both, 30k each

    • Wow.

    • Rough income?

    • If you’re in the game of getting 3+ new cards each year with bonus points, I’d recommend always setting the limit to the lowest they allow in the sign up process. That should help your overall credit rating.

  • Is this offer available once per individual, or per household?
I've had the MC a little while and met the spend requirement on that, and just now received the AmEx - was about to add my partner as a supplementary cardholder to help us get to the requirement quicker, but wondered whether it's worth instead getting her to do a separate application and would we then be able to double up on the bonus points?

    • It is per individual. If your partner can meet the required spend, you should do that.

  • Can I get an additional card for my husband? He doesn’t meet the minimum salary otherwise I would of applied for him too

    • +1

Yes - 1 additional for the MC, 4 additional for the AmEx

    • Yes, I have applied and got them in few days.

  • double post please delete

  • im not a qantas frequent flyer member yet but want to apply for this card. Do I go on the website https://www.qantas.com/fflyer/dyn/joinff and pay $89.50 and apply first then sign up for this card deal. This is my first time getting a credit card

  • People, has anyone got any advice on how to avoid paying 50 bucks 'connecting Qantas membership number' fee? Sounded super annoying.

  • How long did everyone find the approval process? Once I submitted mine they were very quick to give the conditional approval asking for docs and a follow up every day. Once submitted, it's been 3 business days I still haven't heard a peep…

    • Conditionally approved on Monday and then final approval on a Friday (got text messages on both occasions).

      • So my assumption is that you submitted forms on Monday and they took 4 business days to approve in your situation? Thanks.

  • Hi there, same question as Heb's above - how long did it take for you to get the final approval after you supplied income details after conditional approval? Cheers

    • I'll answer my own question. Applied on Thursday morning, got conditional approval and supplied income proof. On Saturday afternoon got two SMS messages from both Westpac and AmEx that I'm approved. Westpac will be sending info how to get my card within 5 business days and AmEx will be sending it to me within 7 business days.

  • Can get this by applying on the branch? My experiences applying cc at branch is easier.

  • I’d not heard from Amex then got a letter saying that I apparently have been declined due to some terms and conditions issue with another Amex card I have. I’m seeing people in here with several cards and this would have been my second and I have an always paid off card with min balances very upset not really any actionable info there

    • Now that I have the MC and not the AMEX now I’m worried the annual fee is going to be a hassle

      • Interested to know too, same situation but application seems to indicate as long as you apply for both fee is waived. No mention of fee being applied if one isn’t approved.

      • +1

just call tomorrow and clarify if they charge annual then you can decide if you want to go ahead or not, if not just cancel on the phone i dont think they will charge annual fee as yet.

  • is this the best new CC deal at the moment? provided i can spend around $5-6,000 in the first 3 months or so.

  • I applied on Thursday. They said conditional, I have to supply payslips OR bank statements. Then on sat got another email saying they received payslips but I need to send bank statements showing my income is going in.
Hope I get approved. I wanted to use it to buy my flight tickets so need the card quickly.

    • Same. Approved but waiting for flights. Just buy if you must…. my flights increased from 215 to 255 which far outweighs…

      • Do you guys hold normal full time salary jobs? Or contractor/temp/casual stuff? I think I did mine around tues and heard nothing so far.

        • +1

based on the logic, it will be pretty pretty hard to get black card with non full time job.

          • @CyberMurning: Got approved on both MasterCard and AmEx today

            I work full time

            • @sakinah: did you disclose all your other credit cards and their limits? :)

              • @CyberMurning: You will have to else they will get that info from your credit history.

              • +1

@CyberMurning: This is my first time getting a credit card

          • @CyberMurning: Can still get the Platinum Visa and Black AMEX combo if you are having difficulties getting Black Visa approved

          • @CyberMurning: Contractor pay can be much higher than premanent

            • @SnoozeAndLose: But bank doesn't like it. They need stability. Someone work in banks maybe can clarify

  • hi all, just done with citi cc now need to find other deals.
this will works with buying woolworths giftcard, right? $6000 is not easy small amount to spend for me.

  • Is paying ATO DEBT is considered as purchase as well? Would it be considered toward the 3k purchase. Thinking to use Amex to pay the ATO. Any other ideas are welcomed.

    • I'm assuming it does. I'll be doing the same thing but will be 1.45% fee.

  • Got both cards today. Activated and payed for $5000 flights for my family. I’m happy.

  • +1

I rang AmEx to add my QFF
The person told me if I get an additional card for my husband and he spends $750 in first 3 months we will get 3000 QFF points. He said it’s only available over the phone. So I got it

    • thanks but why we need to rang to add QFF? it was there on the application process, a field to enter our QFF. or maybe that was for MC only not AMEX?

      • I hadn’t signed up for QFF when I did the application so left it blank
So I had to ring Westpac and AmEx to add it. Yours should be fine

        • i see. well so i missed out the extra 3k point lol

  • Did anyone get approved immediately via the website online? Or did you get a message saying "We cannot make an immediate decision based on the information you've provided. Your application is important to us, so we will review it personally and should have a decision for you within 2-3 working days."

    • i got that too then next day email says conditional approved.

      • and now asking me to upload payslips etc

  • Can anyone confirm the date this ends? I have a lot of insurances expiring in March, and would could easily meet the spend if I have Feb as well.

    • -1

      Only Westpac knows…

  • looks like code QBX12 is expired..I'm getting following error for the promo code which has been automatically populated by the link.

The special offer code you entered is incorrect. Please re-enter the code or continue applying for the Altitude Black World Mastercard® with standard features.

    • +1

Damn so lucky just applied 2 days ago.

Edit. Nope code and link still working, give me zero annual fees for both.

      • did you clear out the code QBX12 in Rewards Program section(in 3rd step of application)? I cannot get past that without clearing it out and Im not sure if I clear it out if I will get charged an annual fee. Where did you see zero annual fee? Yes link still works but its blocked during application process

        It works now! :)

        • I applied yesterday via the link, didn't notice anywhere to put in the code? Hopefully I will still get the points.

Hello. Has anyone received the complimentary Qantas lounge invitations after using the carbon offset trick (e.g. 7¢ Avalon to Melbourne)? I bought this offset more than two weeks ago and still no invitations. I did activate the card and Qantas club as required. Cheers.

    • +1

No I bought the offset and didnt get any lounge invitation

      • +1

Thank you for the response. I'd assume that most people here used the carbon offset trick but I can't find any complaints about not receiving the Qantas lounge passes. It might be just us. I'll give it until the first statement; otherwise, I'll call Westpac to confirm. Cheers.

        • +1

I did something similar and waited for 2 weeks. I went back and paid for something for more than $1 and managed to get the passes pretty quick after that.

Not sure if I had to wait or if it was the over $1 spend that triggered it. Hope it works out. :)

  • Yeah got approved both Westpac and amex.
Also just for fun I applied anz frequent flyer black at the same time. Approved too.

    • Hope you have heaps to spend 😜

      • worry about that later. mrs will have no problem spending $8,000 in 3 months HAHAHA

  • Has anyone had the amex shop small offer show up in there westpax amex card? Mine didnt show but my direct issued card had the offer so inn assuming westpac amex arent included???

    • in the amex app it shows I just registered

    • Register via ozb deal and once registered, it will show.

  • and…. the "Your Altitude Black Card" email confirmation with Credit Card Key Facts Sheet, has $250 annual fee.

need to call them and sort this out… seriously, why such a big company cant have things right.

    • Mine has this too, I think it's just their standard email and I don't think that fee will apply?

I will only call them if I can see it is charged to my account, and get them to reverse it.

      • ok agree. as someone suggested, keep monitoring for annual fee $250 (and $50 qantas fees).

  • I notice on their terms and conditions updated Apr 2018 that government, bpay and specifically ATO payments do not accrue any points
    https://www.westpac.com.au/docs/pdf/pb/credit-cards/Altitude…

However, with the minimum spending - do government rates/fees and bpay bills count towards it? What's everyone's experience so far if you actually tried this?

    Thanks

When will you not earn points using
an Altitude card issued by Westpac?

While points are earned when you
    purchase goods and services, please
note that points are not earned in
respect of the following amounts that
may be charged to your card account:

    • government charges (other than
GST payable in connection with the
purchase of goods or services on
    which you earn points)
    • interest and other bank fees and
    charges (including any GST payable
    on any of these)
    • cash advances (any transaction
treated by us as a cash advance
    as further explained in the
    “Interpretation” section – clause 19
    below) balance transfers
    • BPAY payments; i.e. bill payments
and other payments made through the BPAY
    ® Electronic Payments
    Scheme.10
    • ATO payments; i.e. payments
using your Altitude Visa card or
    Mastercard®; Altitude Platinum
    Visa card or Mastercard; Altitude
    Platinum Plus Visa card or
    Mastercard; and Altitude Black
    World Mastercard®, designated as an
ATO payment or Card Payment Fee.

    • I assume the first point refers to actual charges so a payment of water corp, synergy and other utility providers woulf still be covered under the 0.75 points per $ spend?? Whereas amex reverts this to 0.5 as they are government owned??

Per the signup page linked here

American Express® Westpac Altitude Black Card
2 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases in foreign currency,
1.25 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases in Australia,
0.5 Qantas Point for every $1 spent at government bodies in Australia such as Australia Post & the Australian Taxation Office.

      Westpac Altitude Black Mastercard
0.75 Qantas Points for every $1 spent on eligible purchases.

      • I think there may be a chance based on how I'm reading it that the above type of charges will not be eligible for reward points OR QFF points for just the Westpac card.

Westpac T&Cs for the Qantas rewards:
Qantas Points are not earned in respect

        with the purchase of goods
or services on which you earn
        Qantas Points);
        •ATO payments; i.e. payments using

        Card or Mastercard; and Altitude
        Qantas Black World Mastercard®
designated as an ATO payment or

        • interest and other bank fees and
        charges (including any GST payable
        on any of these);
        • Cash Advances;(unless your card is an Altitude
        Business Qantas Gold Card) any
spend deemed by us to be for
        business purposes, which includes,
but is not limited to, transactions
that relate to the conduct of a
business, use of your Card to make
        purchases that are business-related
        (including any expenditure of a
        personal business nature) or use
of your Card to purchase goods or
services that are not used wholly
        or predominantly for personal,
        domestic or household purposes;
        • balance transfers;
        • BPAY® payments; i.e. bill payments
        and other payments made through
        the BPAY Electronic Payments Scheme

        • Damm, I paid ATO from both cards. Paid fees taken they will give points. I checked deal page and it suggested less points.
I checked the sign up page and it says payment to ato is getting less points . I will raise it with westpac if that is not the case.

          • @EnALup: My take is the mastercard won't earn any points, and will probably not count towards the bonus spend either unless someone can tell us otherwise.

The amex should be right, albeit .5 points only for ato.

    • someone said, if not accruing points, means not eligible for minimum spending. simple as that.
better call to confirm, each bank has different rules.

  • Was also looking at this on the website where you apply in relation to the bonus 80/40k reward points:

Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, BPAY, BPAY equivalent transaction, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account

But in reality - how strictly is this enforced?

    • in my citibank CC case, VERY strict.
they read all transactions and pointed government payments are not included. and somehow they recognise the council names for example "Liverpool"

  • Hi guys,
I have a CC with CBA (22k limit) that I want to move to this CC. The benefits with CBA suck big time.

    How would you proceed?

Is it better to close the card first or transfer the balance? What would the bank like more? I couldn't find any TB info.

I also have to add a second holder (missus). Is there an extra fee that I missed somehow?

    • Personally I would cancel your CBA one first before applying.

You can add an additional card holder free of charge.

      • Do you need to provide lots of ID and have antoher hassle of going in branch to pick it up too? Or is it more like the efficient Amex process - request and receive?

        • with CBA? triple hassles more likely

      • Thank you, DevlicK. That makes sense.

  • +2

If you were like me looking for the website to register for the qantas lounge here it is :)
    https://loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au/

    • Hmm so we can't buy and sell the pass anymore? Now it's tied to our account is that right?

    • whats the cheapest spend option in the qantas store to qualify for the passes?

      • from previous post it's the offset carbon.
though the lounge are only for international lounge

        • My understanding is the amex one gives you international lounge in MEL and SYD.

Mastercard gives you access to some qantas lounges.

          • @H E B: You might be right @heb I misread

Qantas Club Lounge Invitations: To be eligible for the two complimentary Qantas Club Lounge invitations, you must register at loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au and then use your Altitude Black Mastercard in Australia to purchase selected Qantas products and services. Qantas Club Lounge invitations will not be issued to customers who do not first register at loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au prior to making the eligible card spend.

    • Oh, we have to register with this link before making the spend? I had registered for the other priority pass thing but I guess that is different. Once we make spend, I wonder how long it takes to enter in to account.

      • I tried to register and buy straight away. Few days later still nothing. Guess another carbon offset for me hahahahaa.

      • Yes it's different I had issue founding the link it's when I went down to read the T & C that I found it.

  • +1

Has anyone received their points yet? If so, how long did it take?

    • Nope. It is taking really long. Please share if you get them.

    • +1

Amex points are quick, as soon as $3000 are spent they appear in the amex website and then they are transferred 5-7 days before the statement.
The Mastercard one are taking longer was supposed to be second statement though for us didn't happen yet. I have a friend he spent the $$$ after us and already got all the points…so no logic

      • +1

shoot them email just be polite ask them to check if you meet the spending limit etc etc and usually they will do it very quick after.

  • Real stupid question (sorry), but when I've filling out my income/expense figures, its saying my expenses exceed my income (as I'm not including my sposes' income (obviously). Should I think split my mortgage 50/50?

    • Yes, as this is an individual application you only include your share of everything not household expenses.

    • +1

yeah, seems like the logical thing to do
Though somewhat worrying if your mortgage payments and (i assume conservative due to being a CC application) living expenses exceed a single income ;)

  • Got my amex issue Westpac’s black card last Tuesday… does anyone know how long it takes for amex offers to start showing up on the card? Currently I’ve got zero amex offers :/

    • +1

add the offers manually and it will shows up. - (use manual link)

    • +1

Yeah. I also just got a new Westpac Amex and just went to the original link and manually registered it this morning.

      • Yeh haha I manually added the Small Shop offers, but I guess I was hoping that the offers will eventually starting to show up automatically without having to manually register it.

Hopefully it will!! Don’t wanna miss out amazing Xmas offers (if they’re still amazing that is) hehe

  • hi all just want to share, i made a call to ask what are the eligible purchases to receive bonus points on this offer. the lady said any, except government and bpay.

    • Hmm it still does remain unclear as to whether payments to ato count towards the spend.

      • as far as i know, ato owned by government… A is Australia i think

    • Did you call up westpac or amex? Im assuming Westpac thats in line with my points assumptions above.

Amex have their own thing apparently, even tho it's westpac branded it's still managed by Amex.

  • Hmm I did a qantas fuel offset on my amex, realised it supposed to be on mastercard then did that, now realise that I didn't register at https://loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au/ (had only previously signed up for priority pass) then did that. So.. I don't have invitations now so either I wait a bit longer or do a third fuel offset. :|

  • Applied on 7 Nov, got conditional approval and uploaded income verification documents straight away.

Still waiting for an update. How long did it take for you guys to get final approval after providing income documents?

    • Applied on a Sunday, got conditional approval message to upload income verification on Monday. Uploaded straight away. Received approval for both cards on Wednesday. Received both cards on Friday.

      • Just received email that both Westpac and Amex have been approved :)

  • new
Applied on Thursday, got conditionally approved straight away,
Got.approved Saturday -both MC and Amex(within minutes of each other)

Now I just reliase that I might have gone directly to westpac website not not via OzBargain post.

Anyway can I check this while waiting for my card? And if I can get this annual fee reversed?

    • -2

better call Westpac. Or give me your details so I can log-in to your personal bank account and check for you? Kidding. Do not post them here! Doh

    • +1

Ahhh. But when I called westpac just now the lady did say it is still 250!
Only waived for the Amex portion of 199 dollars

      FML

  • for people who applied, how/when you get the qantas lounge pass? automatically sent out? (soft/hard copy)?
    or i need to apply/ask?

    • If you do a search on the post you ll find it. There is a link you register (sorry on the phone so not easy to find) then you need to spend $$ with the Mastercard but at qantas. The trick seems to spend $$ on the carbon offset.

  • I did the carbon offset trick but still haven't receive any Q pass after 2 weeks - yes I enrolled at the loungepass site before paid for carbon offset. Anyone done the offset purchased and received the pass?

    • How much $ did you offset?

      • $0.11

You think there is a minimum requirement for the pass?

        • That's what's being debated earlier in this post. Might be minimum $1. People still testing and many people haven't received yet.

          • @watwatwat: i paid 1.xx few days ago. still nothing

            • +1

@CyberMurning: Hey guys, I had similar issues previously but just got my passes. Came across your comments previously when I was looking for other people in similar position so hope this will help.

When I first got the card, I did the carbon offset doing Tullamarine to Avalon for $0.07. Waited 15 working days and nothing.

Then I tried Heathrow to Gatwick for $0.06, waited 10 working days and nothing.

About a week ago I did Sydney to Canberra for $0.54 and just got my passes today.

I registered/re-registered for the passes via the Westpac site before each attempt.

    • I was one of the ones with same issue. Bought a $1+ offset and got the passes within a couple of days. I also reregistered at each attempt. Good luck.

On a separate note, does someone know if the Amex passes renew every calendar year or is it every membership year? I already used the passes, but the guy at the lounge (Melbourne) told me that they get topped up every calendar year, which I don't think is true. Is there any way to check if you have passes available without going to the lounge? Thanks.

      • On the 7/11 bought offset go $0.17 I had nothing over a week after, then read that we might need to spend over $1, so on the 19th I spent $1.14 and now my lounge invitations are showing on the portal since the 24/11.
Keep in mind that they have an expiry date mine expire December 2019 but because I want to cancel the card I had no choice to do it now, though if you are planning some trips later on maybe wait to "order" them.

        • ok. for my case, i registered and bought $1.55 on 13nov then
          re-registered and bought $1.98 on 21 Nov.
and…. i got 2 new invitation now, with exp date 24 dec 2019. must be from westpac.
i wish they sent email when giving the pass. (anz did send email when they give me 2 passes last week)

          thanks all.

          • @CyberMurning: I did the carbon offset on 17/11 and 26/11 both after registration and purchasing more than $1.

So far still no invitations. 😔

            • @TheMommy: i got the invitations first but then today received email notification below:
i only have 1 westpac black so must be for that.

              Dear xxxxx,
Thank you for choosing Qantas Rewards.
As a Westpac Earth Black Mastercard customer, we're pleased to let you know that your two Qantas Club Complimentary Lounge Invitations are now available for you to use with your next eligible flight^.

  • how do you know how much Qantas points you have with the Westpac card? doesn't show in the app
no points have been transferred to my QFF even though I spend $5000
Amex QFF points have been transferred

    • with the westpac card the points appear in the statement and the bonus might not appear on the first statement, for us nothing on the 2nd and the 3rd is coming soon so we ll see.

  • -1

Sorry, new to the game. Any reason why you wouldn't sign up for this deal rather than this one?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/413815

    • 90k points v 120k?

      • Exactly. So why would one pick the lower 90K one? Genuinely curious.

        • +1

maybe, for some people it would be impossible to get black card ie income etc.
so get lower ie platinum is better than nothing.

  • Any monthly point caps for this? Cheers

    • -1

sorry wrong thread no one care here because we just hit the minimum spend, stop spending, wait for points then close the card. wait a year, rinse and repeat.

unless you are loaded, it is crazy to keep black card. please dont.

      • That's my plan but I thought I'd keep it for the full year at least and then cancel. The points return for general spend quite decent.
Unless of course a new deal comes in which case I'll cancel this one before applying for less chance of getting rejected for the new cards.

  • 3rd statement in and the 80k finally appear they should be in the qantas account soon. Time to cancel the card (after I receive the lounge pass)

    • damn after 3rd statement that is slow.
lucky i have done my $3000 spending in just 2 weeks after receiving card

      • though most of us got it 2nd statement or even before…no rule by the look of it

  • Does anyone have these cards and the ANZ black cards at the same time?
I've got heaps of expenses coming up and will be spending 20K+ on various things in the next 3-6 months. Want to make the most of my spending.

    • I don't see why having both westpac and ANZ cards will cause any problems so long as you have good credit rating to get approved

  • i have an active amex explorer card.

a heap of expenses coming up for apr 2019.
wondering if i can apply for this card combo and get all 120k QFF points (80k mastercard + 40k amex)

Or would i dont get it, as i already have an active amex card?

Apologies if this is a repeat question.

    • It is a repeat question but yes, you can apply for the Westpac one as it is considered a ‘bank’ card as opposed to an ‘Amex’ provided card.

  • just reporting re: receiving bonus points:

amex - seems like very fast, within a week after i hit $3000 spend.
my QFF statement says: QANTAS AMEX AFFINITY 19-NOV-2018 43,xxx

westpac, not yet even though i hit $3000 around the same time.

  • Just got my card in the mail. What day does the 90 days start on? Day you activate?

    • The day you got approved. So few days already passed. Better be Quick spend 3000 right away

      • Cheers. Those bastards took 5 full days to send the card and sent it after Black Friday!

      • Do you know if you can set up a direct debit to automatically pay the westpac card?

        • of course. all credit card/bank will have that function, to pay by direct debit from your bank account when its due (minimum or full payment). just login and search. if you cant find it give them a call

          • @CyberMurning: Yeah I just found the autopay function. Annoying that you can't just link your bank account like Amex. Have to go into the branch.

            • @Hunter14: Agree, very annoying. WP should liftup their games with their process.

Even have issue with the branch. Have to visit branch twice to get the card. First time they said they haven't received anything even when showing the email confirm that they sent out a week earlier. On the second time, they said they still don't have it - until i so piss i asked them to cancel the account right there. Then the teller told me to wait and ran to back room to find more information. She came back and proudly announce she found it stuck somewhere in mail room!

              • @timhn: What? Can't do it online? Very poor. Also seems like there is no secure email/messaging facility on the website (after we log-in).

About the card. I nominated to collect from a branch but they sent to home address instead. Crazy

  • For some reason, I have received an extra 30,000 points on top of the 120,000 bonus. No complaints here.

No complaints, but just wanted to find out why. My friend who applied for the platinum also received an extra 15,000 points.

    • and the 30k bonus is from westpac or amex? what does the description says?

      • It doesn't say, only says "credit card bonus".

        • +1

this is from the qantas sunrise promotion they were giving 10000 per card

          • @Gooddeal21: Hmm I don't think I have registered for that. Even if I did, are you suggesting that I won 3 times ?

            • @victorheaven: Yes, I had 30k and my partner 60k but we can't recall all the cards 😉

  • I think I messed up. I spent $3100 on the Altitude Black card within the first month or two, then stashed the card away as I wouldn't need to use it again. I'm still waiting on the bonus points, but noticed that I paid a speeding fine. Would that count as a 'Government Charge'? And would that make me ineligible for the bonus points? (By the way, the 3 months ended for me 2 weeks ago)

    • Eligible purchases do not include fees, cash, cash equivalent transactions, payments to the Australian Tax Office, BPAY, BPAY equivalent transaction, refunds and balance transfers debited from the card account.

It doesn't say in the T&Cs but you may have messed up by speeding.

      • Clicking on the link of this deal and opening the following document mentions government charges are excluded

Altitude Rewards and Altitude Qantas Terms and Conditions (PDF 124KB)

        • most of banks will say no to gov spending, bpay, gambling and few others.
except amex, everything is fine they said! very cool.
(im talking for minimum spending to get bonuses).

    • i think it is gov spending.
      quickly call and ask.

      • Yeah I'll do that in a few hours to make sure. Do you think they'd honour it if I asked nicely enough?

        • we'll never know. ask them to check/calculate/verify all your spending to meet the bonus.

  • What’s the Cheapest way to receive the qantas lounge passes?

  • +1

    register your card here
    https://loungepass.altitudeblack.com.au/

    spend more than $1 here
    https://www.qantasfutureplanet.com.au/

your passes appear in a couple of days. then I got an email saying I got the passes

Make sure this is all done with your Westpac mastercard

    • correct! same happening to me.
just repeat the whole 2 steps in you dont get the pass after say 2-3 weeks

      • Same. Did the carbon offset on 28/Nov and got the 2 passes on 1/Dec. That was with amount greater than $1 - i think around $1.45 or something. I've tried with $0.10 twice didn't trigger anything.

    • you can also sign up to priority pass where you get 2 lounge pass a year with the Westpac card. got the card in the mail yesterday.

      • Priority pass is only available if you opt for Altitude rewards instead of Qantas. Is that not so?

        • No, you just register online and receive a pass. Didn't get a chance to work out where we can use it but we received it.

How long does the Westpac card take to arrive? I already got the Amex one..

    • Did the westpac card come yet?

      • Yeh it has, I had to pick it up from my local branch.

They called me up and left a voice message

  • I applied for these cards a week prior to the 27th but got approved and received them after the 27th (promotion end date). I notice the deal has now been extended but the annual fee now applies. Am i still eligible for the bonus points and have the annual fee waived. I am struggling to find this information.

    • +1

No need to struggle just call them and ask. It's faster and more reliable than asking strangers on forum.

    • I am in the same boat. Did you get any info by calling Westpac?

      • Hi mate I called and they weren’t sure either. They said to call back
If I did get charged and they will look into it.

It’s been a week and I haven’t been charged the annual fee for the MasterCard.

I only just received the Amex today.

  • Is there any issue with cancelling the mastercard but keeping the amex after receiving all the bonuses?

    • I don't think so, I did just that.

You will start paying annual fees for the Amex ($199 I think) after your first anniversary.

      • +2

If you have other American Express cards, it's probably good to keep the card until the end of the full year so that you can use the Amex offers that will come up during the next year. After that, depending on your spending pattern, you may wish to consider another Amex Qantas earning card in place of this one.

Card Annual Fee Qantas points per dollar Travel Credit Lounge
American Express Altitude Qantas $199 1.25 Normal, 2 Foreign, 0.5 Government None 2 Amex
The Qantas American Express Premium Card $249 1 Normal, 0.5 Government None None
The Qantas American Express Ultimate Card $450 1.25 Normal, 0.5 Government $450 2 Amex 2 Qantas
The Qantas American Express Discovery Card $0 0.75 Normal, 0.5 Government None None
        • oh didnt know the discovery is also free annual fee, now i have essential maybe should upgrade. not using much but QFF is better than amex points i think in value

  • Regarding the Amex airport lounge at Sydney airport
I’m traveling with my husband and kids. Can they also get in the lounge? My husband has a supplementary card.
Do I just show my Amex?

    • nopes

      • I have found out that I can use the two free passes to get in for my husband and I and kids under 17 are free

    • Yes, just check it’s an amex with lounge access

      • Well I signed up to this deal and it’s says 2 lounge passes on this Westpac altitude black Amex card

  • Hi All
Re the qantas lounge invitation, on the terms and conditions it says
" Invitations are sent to Eligible Customers at Qantas' absolute and sole discretion and Qantas can withdraw Invitations at any time. Invitations are only for Eligible Customers and Eligible Customers cannot bring guests, including children."
    https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/the-qantas-club/…
so for my partner I ll have to give her one invitation, but we are wondering what should we do for our 3yo kid ?

  • If anyone's wondering about timeframes:
I got approval in 2 days and received the cards 3 days after that in the mail (cards are sent separately).
Also got my Qantas lounge passes; registered using the link then paid the carbon offset for SYD-ADL for around $1.23 - received the passes a week after via email.
Reached the Amex $3000 spend target and received the 40k bonus points in my Qantas account within 3 days (haven't reached the Mastercard target yet) - the T&C's say up to 12 weeks so I was surprised.
