  • thought Amex not dealing with the banks anymore?

    • +1

They are and aren't at the same time in this instance - it's a separate card with a separate limit and bill that's issued by Amex themselves. But when you apply through Westpac, they'll pass the info needed by Amex onto them to determine if you are eligible for the Amex.

      • I assume the are 2 credit checks. Is it likely one is approved the other rejected because of too many applications?!

      • Tempting, but I cancelled an Amex issued card a couple of months ago and I'm wondering if their 18 month exclusion period applies? Couldn't find anything in the T&Cs.

        • It applies

          • @daft009: Where does it say that? Not doubting you, but I couldn't find any info

            • @bargainsniper: As the amex is a separate card and credit check and not bank issued you would have the 18 month exclusion is my educated guess

            • @bargainsniper: Some people got rejected by one Amex on a previous deal I think.

              • @nadan: Yea I got rejected on the altitude black deal for the amex but approved for the westpac one. It was pretty bizarre as they said the reason was 'not meeting payment terms and conditions on a previous amex card' which is false. I called them and they're looking at it again. I'm not that fussed about it now thou as I've already missed out on the card for shop small.

                • @Fever4shakin: The only suspect thing and why I think you are eligible is because they are actually branded as Westpac Altitude cards. Looking at the ALtitude platinum/black cards on the Westpac site it's very clearly a Westpac card.

Finally from the terms and conditions.

The American Express Westpac Altitude Platinum Card will have a $0 introductory annual Card fee for the first year of Card Membership. After the first year, the annual Card fee will be $49 per year. Offer only available to new American Express Westpac Altitude Platinum Card Members who apply between 9th August 2018 and 27th November 2018 and are approved.

Anyway hope this helps and goodluck! Would actually be pretty nice going forward because I'll be cancelling my AMEX Explorer after 12 months so being able to sign up for these bank AMEX cards means you can keep getting those sweet sign up bonuses :)

            • @bargainsniper: As per chess' reply below he got both points so perhaps you won't be excluded

        • Not sure what the 18 months exclusion period is but I had an Amex Explorer card for less than a year and then signed up to this (when they were offering a 75k point bonus) as a replacement and I didn't get rejected. I've got my 75k points now too.

An annual $50 Qantas Rewards fee applies for customers who choose to earn Qantas Points through the Altitude Qantas rewards program.

  • I think this is the highest sign up bonus at the moment for a Platinum card, and Westpac had a minimum income requirement of $30k when I applied last year for the Altitude Platinum.

The annual fee isn't that great after the first year, particularly if you want to earn Qantas points - the Amplify Platinum cards from BankSA\St George\Bank of Melbourne have much the same benefits and earn rate for half the annual fee if you are after a card to keep for more than a year, but no Amex there.

    • -1

30k? I guess you must have a lot of deposit in Westpac then.

      • Income, not bank balance

    • 30k? Isn't that below the minimum wage?!

      • People work part time too :)

    • Get the sign up Bonus and cancel the card imo. Alternatively getting the Qantas points as the signup bonus and then converting to Altitude points is always good for these sort of cards. Very expensive cards to maintain, at least my explorer comes with equal value in travel credit.

I would suggest calling up Westpac to confirm you haven't had an account open in the previous 12 months.
I applied and made the eligible spend in July, waited until my October statement and nothing. Queried on the phone and the lady told me I still had an altitude account open therefore ineligible, but she is definitely incorrect. My details have now been sent for review, whatever that actually means.

Another colleague of mine is in the same boat, however on his phonecall he was told he was ineligible because he was issued the same Westpac online login (like myself)

    • Do you have a St George Amplify card? I am hoping they don't classify this as a Westpac card, given they're owned by Westpac.

      • Yes I had the St George Amplify in July.
Was on the phone with Westpac rewards yesterday, same results - forwarded case to "administration"

    • im also on the same boat, they are playing hard to get with the bonus points.

  • +1

Is there any other cards out there (that are not WBC related) at the moment with zero annual fee for the first year that has any QFF bonuses?

    • Not right now. This is about the best option you can get if you want confirmed zero fees for the first year with good bonus points.

Alternatives you might want to consider though are the $375ish per year Amex velocity card as it has lots of points bonuses plus a free flight which will very much offset that annual fee.

If you do not want the fee but for whatever reason cannot apply for the above mentioned Westpac Amex then just apply for the Amex provided discovery card or that other one by Amex which I cannot remember right now which is fee free for life. Just don’t expect things like 50,000 bonus points.

      • +2

Just looking for fee free bonus points. I've only ever done those, not looking to outlay any cash.

Already have a WBC card, BoM, Amex (WBC related) and a Citi Qantas card, recently churned off ANZ too. So I am starting to get limited on the annual fee free bonus points cards!

        • Worth looking at the ones with fees unless your budget is stretched. The current CBA ones are basically $200 in your pocket for a small outlay and minimum spend.

Way of rationalising is getting these and the $50 - $100 from transaction accounts when they pop up to cover any CC fees payable when chasing points.

    • +1

Yes. Altitude black 120k points total.

    • Qantas has one:

      https://www.qantasmoney.com/credit-cards/premier-everyday

40k points for $4k spend in 2 months.

      • Thanks, but already on that one!

        • Same boat here waiting for a new free offer :-) couple of months and will be anz again

This is a pretty good website showing list of all of the available credit cards with bonus QFF (and other reward) points.

ANZ still does through their internet banking site (i.e. you need an existing ANZ account to be able to see these). I just keep an ANZ "progress saver" account open with $10 parked in it, as this has no fees, and keeps my ANZ online banking open.
To see these offers, once logged in, go: Apply -> Credit cards -> scroll down to "ANZ Frequent Flyer cards" at the bottom of the page. 2 main options listed, depending upon your financial situation:
      * "ANZ Frequent Flyer Black" with "75,000 Qantas Points when you spend $2,500 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months and no annual fee for the first year"
      * "ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum" with "50,000 Qantas Points when you spend $2,500 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months and no annual fee for the first year".
These are the same offers as these deals: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/389887 and https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/389876 - both were marked as expired when they were no longer publicly available, but in reality they never went away if you were willing to get there indirectly via opening another ANZ account first.

      • Thanks for the tip! Can you please let us know if there are any of the usual conditions like can't have had the card in the last 12 months, etc.?

        • +1

All the usual conditions still apply. E.g. "Not available …. where you currently hold or have closed an ANZ Frequent Flyer, ANZ Frequent Flyer Gold, ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum or ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card within the previous twelve months".

  • Altitude points are really bad so make sure you go with QANTAS.

I got this card last week, is there any chance I can get the extra 15k pts?

    • +1

      Did you ask them?

      • yeah why ask ozb we are not banks

  • Does anyone know if by having the St George Amplify card is considered a Westpac card, given St George is owned by Westpac?

    • No it isn't. You have have a WBC card and a Branded card (ie. Bank Of Melb, Bank of SA, St George etc.)

  • so, spending $6k in total within 3 months?

  • I guess I am not eligible if I took advantage of the 80+40k Qantas point deal with Amex/Westpack altitude black?

    • Should be able to apply for both. I did by accident when applying for altitude black. I accidentally applied for platinum by mistake, called them the next day and was told they would withdraw the application and to apply for the correct one. Did that, and of course they didn't actually withdraw my platinum application so I have ended up with both cards. Just means a lot of credit checks. Got rejected by amex thou for a false reason but don't need the amex to be approved for the fee to be waived.

  • I've just completed mine and got my 90k points from the last promo. Nothing but good things except the start was a little rocky.

    • +1

How long after completing the minimum spend did you receive your Westpac Points?

I called 3 weeks ago, confirmed it was due, but they said 'up to 12 weeks'!!

      • Yeah same for me. Told to wait 3 months what the hell.

      • The bonus was included with the crediting of the 3rd statement's points

      • Just checked, and the bonus points have come through this week (:

        Card obviously already closed (;

  • I hold this card 6 months ago Altitude Qantas Platinum card

    Am I still eligible ?

it says : Existing Westpac customers who currently hold an Earth, Earth Platinum, Earth Platinum Plus, Earth Black, Altitude Platinum Visa Card or Altitude Black Mastercard, or who have held one in the last 12 months, are not eligible for this offer.

    • You'll have to call and ask I reckon.

  • +2

The Black offer is still valid too if anyone prefer that option:

  • any deals on the Westpac Black card??

    • +7

      Literally the comment above you..

      • Thanks, sorry got lost in the pool of comments.

Any difference between this and the black one?

        • Black 80k+40k points for $3k+3k spend vs 90k+15k for same spend here.
Black will have higher income requirement and min credit amount prob $15k

          • @Gandalf the Thrifty: So I need to spend 6k in 3 months to get 120K points?

If so, this is a good opportunity since we are coming into Xmas.

            • +1

              @Homr: Yes, $6k in 3 months.

With the Black you also get 2 Qantas Lounge passes, 2 American Express Lounge passes, more points per dollar spent, and no Qantas Rewards fee so it's a much better deal.

            • @Homr: Guess so I've never had these cards before.
Lucky family and friends if you spending $6k on Xmas:)

        • the difference is the colour. black and not black

          dohhh

Personally, I find it hard to spend 3k using amex. Alot of places dont take amex, or the surcharge is high.

    • +10

Here's how I do it, link your amex credit card to your PayPal. Then shop online with paypal, almost every online retailer accepts paypal. You can also pay bills if one of the options is postbillpay. Postbillpay -> paypal -> your amex. Easy to spend with amex!

      • Yeh that's how I do it aswell. I link all my utilities bills to paypal which links to my amex card.

      • I don't know if I'm doing something wrong or not but on the post billpay website it never recognises the bill code. This is for Brisbane City Council rates. The bill code is something like 689 or *689. I tried searching for Brisbane City Council or BCC as well, to no avail.

    • Groceries and fuel take amex, that's where most of our amex spending go. Then lunches coffees…holidays..

  • Man I just got approved for this card last week. They make you sign up by a certain date to get bonus offer and then only to later bring it a better offer the day after. I want to call and see if I can get the bonus 15k points. Highly doubt that they will honor it.

    • Same!

    • They didn't honour it for me

  • The Black deal mentioned above is a much better deal than this one. More points up front, more points earned per dollar, no Qantas Rewards fee, and includes Qantas and American Express lounge passes.

  • Altitude Platinum offers 60K QFF points on visa/master with annual fee free for first year for 3k spending within 90 days. Certainly not hard to manage. If u find Amex repulsive this is another option.

    • or you get this one but don't use the amex and you still get the 80k

      • You get 75K QFF for meeting the $3k min spend on the Westpac VISA, so it's clearly the main game (at 75000/3000 + 0.5 per $ = 25.5 QFF per $ spend in the min spend period, or around 30% rewards ratio).

But assuming you'd spend another $3k in the first 90 days anyway, you might as well do the Amex as well (it works out to 15000/3000 + 1 per $ = 6 QFF points per $ spend if you reach the min spend, or around 7% rewards ratio, which is way higher than any other card outside the bonus period).

So do both if you can with normal spending patterns. If unsure, do the VISA first. Personally, since I know that we'll always reach the min spend for both, I do half the amex first (but will only use it where it has no extra surcharges above VISA/MC), then all the VISA, whilst keeping an eye out for amex promos or supplementary card offers (as basically these allow you to double dip, and get the bonus promo + another amex promo at the same time), and then finish off the amex.

  • I already have 2 Amex cards, I understand Amex has a rule of at most 2 cards for each customer, does the rule apply to this card?

  • Will i qualify for this deal if i have an existing AMEX explorer

  • anyone knows the income requirements, doesn't mention anywhere on the site

    • 30k minimum income

  • I would wait before jumping on this one, last time was this offer, then one without the $50 fee and then the black one.

  • -4

I am voting neg on this because this deal is better https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/401343 but this one shows up first in the search instead. Consequently I accidentally signed up for this one instead and have been approved and only noticed the problem when i was googling for the spend criteria :-(

    • why neg? not everyone is in the same boat, what is better for you not necessarily better for other people, these are different cards

    • The minimum annual income is 75000 for black but only 35000 for platinum, no need to neg just because you couldn't spend a minute more going through the other deals.

    • Both are great deals and fit different people.

As I credit card hop a lot, I prefer the platinum deals to keep my combined credit limit low when applying for new cards. (Black cards usually have a minimum 15k credit limit)

    • for whats it worth, I forgot about the offer you linked, so thanks for posting the comment

  • Sorry, new to the game. Any reason why you wouldn't sign up for this deal rather than this one?
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/413815

  • I already have the black combo deal but cancelled the mastercard as have already got the points from both cards

I still have the amex and was going to cancel it but I am thinking it might be worth to keep?

I still have about 7 or so months left to go where I get the free annual fee and in that time I can still earn 1.5 QFF points which is good. After that I just found out there is a $0 annual fee AMEX I can switch to which still earns 1 QFF point which is really good for a free card!

Otherwise if I want to re-apply for the 15,000 points I need to wait 18 months. In that time I am sure I can still earn that amount of points just by spending plus I get all the other benefits too.

Anyone else in the same boat and thinking its better to keep the AMEX then cancel and wait 18 months to reapply just for the 15000 points?

Although I guess with this deal you are kind of stuck since you need to apply for both cards even if you want to get the mastercard 90000 points as you cant elect to only get that card by itself can you?

    Cheers

    • we were thinking about keeping the amex too but we decided to cancel it as we want to apply for St george, and might be new ANZ coming early 2019 (if same as 2018 OzB deals)

  • It has been 3 months since I met the spend requirements, there has been no sign of the bonus points. Called the 1300 number on the back of the card and was told I had two active black cards on their system.
I cancelled my previous card back in September 2017,and their card department confirmed this too. It took two hours of being on call to get a confirmation that the bonus points will come through in January.

Moral of the story is that if you haven't received your points and had a card with them before, ring and confirm that the card isn't active with their rewards team.
