This stuff is NOT ethanol, the type of alcohol you drink. It's propanol, it is poisonous if consumed.

"Alcohol" refers to a class of chemicals, including methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, and many others. ONLY ETHANOL is suitable for drinking.

"Isopropyl alcohol" is also called propanol, propan-2-ol, IPA, "rubbing alcohol" and a heap of other names too. If you are foolish enough to drink it, your body will convert it into acetone - nail polish remover. At the hospital emergency department, they often use the distinctive smell to aid in the diagnosis of your poisoning.

    • +4

You don't have to drink it… there is other uses if you have watched breaking bad….

    • I'd say go for it but it is a burden on taxpayers.

    • +1

Some may argue ethanol is not suitable for drinking

    • +3

ONLY ETHANOL is suitable for drinking.

Its not really, but people do it anyway and then condemn things like glucose

    • +4

      "…is also called propanol, propan-2-ol, IPA…"

I'm always down for a good IPA

    • So is this a cheap way to manufacture nail polish removers?

      • Yep!
        1. Drink!
        2. Partially digest
        3. Vomit
        4. Profit!

          @Suspect420: Pax here. Great unit.

        • @thrillhouse: yeah I've tried a few…. Pax 2, Pax 3, Da Vinci IQ, Arizer. Wanna get a mighty soon, just waiting for a deal!

        • @Suspect420: Arizer Solo was my first handheld and it was great. Happy with my Pax 3 + Da Buddha combo :) the former is just so expensive!

      • +16

No, the only thing that can clean stripper poles is saliva.

Great for cleaning the billy ;)

    • +4

pardon my australian but what's a billy? a downunder term for willy ? (not sure you'd want to clean that with this)

      • +3

@juki Same as 'billycan'. Here's a link to an overpriced one. https://www.bcf.com.au/p/campfire-billy-can-with-lid-1.5l/11…
Great multi purpose cooling utensil for boiling your tea or coming up some 'grub' (not the animal) when camping etc. Boiling your 'willy' sounds painful and is not an Australian tradition.
I gave you a + vote because your question made me laugh and reminded me of the importance of not assuming everyone understands ockerisms that many of us don't even realise we're using.

        • +7

          Psssst, they mean a bong.

@freefall101: really? When I grew up, a bong was just called a 'bong' or a 'pipe'. I've learned something.

Bought some yesterda at this price. Great deal!

    It's like $14 for 125ml from Bunnings.

  • Good for weighing baby birds.. Oh wait that was the scales

  • +1

What the hell do you all use 5L of the stuff for? I bought a tiny bottle for cleaning eyepieces ages ago and I've still got nearly a full bottle.

    • Mixing with Coke obviously.

    • +4

It's an industrial cleaner, use it for anything you'd use metho to clean. It's a little better than metho, it doesn't seem to evaporate as quickly, and metho can leave behind white powder when it dries, depending on what the denaturant is.

      • +1

If you have a workshop/garage, you literally use this to clean everything.

        • I wouldn't have thought that IPA (solvent) would work as well as a standard degreaser (surfactant) when dealing with oil sludge on car parts?

Good for cleaning oily residues left by degreasers on parts that need it, but it wouldn't be the first thing I'd reach for to tackle tough grime buildup.

      • +1

metho can leave behind white powder when it dries

        Snortable?

        • +2

depending on what the denaturant is.

    • +1

I use it for cleaning computers/electronic parts/3d printer bed etc.

Bunnings sells a small bottle 125ml for $8.77, and i've been through a few so far. A large bottle like this is more cost effective.

    • +1

Rick Simpson looks suspiciously happy, like one of those "bad people" Jeff Sessions was talking about when he discussed "marijuana".

    • +1

It's 99.9% IPA. Depends if you want to round off the number I guess…

  • Does this have a use by date? I only ask because the green croc IA that you get in the shops has a use by date on it

    • I was just about to ask the same thing. Also what's the difference in terms of cleaning between the 99.99% and 70%?

      • +1

Worse. Water will help take away the dirt. Where pure alcohol won’t clean completely.

        Just dilute it.

        This explains it really well.

        • +1

That is a great Youtube video, thanks for sharing. Love the dish cleaner at the end.

      • If you want to kill bacteria, get 70%. As an industrial cleaner get the 99%

        • Thanks! Yea, it was to clean bike parts and tools at home but also disinfect things around the house as required.

      • there are some studies showing anti-microbial properties best around the 60-70% ish mark as i recall, any higher and the alcohol dries to quickly, and also doesn't allow for cell wall penetration or something like that. i did read a study, but going off old memory here. we mix ~60% IA, 20% vinegar,20% water, is great for streak free cleaning and disinfecting, esp on our white laminate counters

  • FYI generally you want 70% if you are using this for cleaning stuff. Pure doesn't work so well.

    • so mix 30% with water?

      • +1

That’s what I usually do. Not precisely but you can just play around with the ratios until I get a good result.

        Check out this video.

      • I've never done it, I think you'd need purified or distilled water, and then I'm not sure what kind of shelf life it'd have after mixing it. I guess if you are disinfecting stuff you are probably being pretty paranoid to bother doing it at all, and then you've got to ask yourself whether saving money by mixing it up yourself is really worth it. Eg if you end up accidentally introducing contaminants that make it less effective.

        I dunno.

    • true.. you don't want anything higher than 70% for cleaning germs, so this is only good for cleaning equipment/stickers, etc…

"A 50% isopropyl alcohol solution kills Staphylococcus Aureus in less than 10 seconds, yet a 90% solution with a contact time of over two hours is ineffective. Some disinfectants will kill spores with exposures times that exceed 3-12 hours, which are classified as chemical sterilants."
      https://blog.gotopac.com/2017/05/15/why-is-70-isopropyl-alco…

  • Good for cleaning windscreens and glass

    • I agree. In my experience rubbing alcohol with water cleans the'smear' off the inside of the windscreen far easier than those over priced ammonia based products.

      • No to mention that combining anything containing ammonia (e.g Windex) with window tint is not a good idea.

  • +3

When I put 3 in cart the price drops below $50 for me. Therefore can’t use Plenty10 code, can only get 5% off with Plug5. Anybody else have same problem?

    • +1

thanks for mentioning that, that's not just you. i had other items in cart and didn't realise the $5 off brought below min spend. i was just about to edit the post, but out of stock now anyway

  • +1

Good deal, but out of stock.
    I snoozed.. ;’(

  • Out of stock :(
    2,609 sold, jesus!

I was gonna get shitty as I missed the last deal, and thought I'd missed this one.
But I just managed to order some then, looks like they have more in stock.

    Woohoo!!!

    • +1

Thanks for the heads up. This happened previously on these deals where they have added stock lager after being marked as expired. Managed to get some after missing out on previous deals, price seems even to have dropped further to $17.38.

      • No worries

  • So what would you mix this with as a hand sanitizer ?
Im guessing this would dry your hands out really quickly

  • How to you make this 80,70,60% etc alcohol
Is there another chemical they add or is it just straight water?

    • +1

usually mixed with de-ionised / destilled / demineralised water from memory. For 80%, 1 part water, 4 parts alcohol.

      • My lab uses distilled water.

      • What if using tap water ?

        • +1

Depends on what you are doing with it. Tap water has all sorts of other chemical goodness in it which may react or cause other issues in your application.

for cleaning glass etc should be fine
for cleaning electronics etc, might be fine but I personally wouldn't trust tap water
for your special home grown chemical production facility, no, just no…

  • Is this a good idea to use for cleaning keyboards and mice?

Also is this a good idea for cleaning the kitchen surfaces or should I use something else?

Don't want to clean the kitchen gas stove and then turn it on and then wala I have created a portal to Satan in a matter of seconds.

Right now just using soap and dishwashing liquid to clean kitchen surfaces and keyboard/mice/peripherals but also looking for the best answer or more tips regarding this.

Dinner table has a plastic clear table cloth or protector so wipes easy.

Kitchen surfaces are both wood near the bread station and cheap vinyl that looks like fake marble near the gas stove.

Taking recommendations or maybe I will buy 1L of this and try it out.

Also wondering if I should use this for the toilet seats and sinks or something else.

Totally clueless on cleaning to be honest and looking for best practices or recommendations but cheap and expensive options.

Housemates sometimes burn incense around the house so also wondering about storage and safety around semi open flames or charred particles, nothing like leaving 5L of flammable liquid near your carpet near a burning incense flame to really brighten the mood haha lol.. ok I will stop.

    • Maybe.

      • +2

        Your comment makes no sense.

  • Thanks OP. Using this for hand washing. Paranoid clean freak here.

    • +1

Just be careful. Small amounts are fine, but you can easily absorb this through the skin and get poisoned. In addition, prolonged use can cause major skin irritation. Better off using one of those hand cleanser things or, frankly, just lots of water & hand rubbing.

      • Have your hands amputated just to be sure.

      • Thanksv

  • I need 99% Isopropyl Alcohol, is there a way to change the mixture from 100%. I was thinking maybe to add 1% of water.

    • +1

You will probably find that if something states you need to use 99% they actually mean 99% or better, but yes, you could use distilled water to dilute it.

      • Ok thank you.

  • $27.94 for me

    • thanks price has gone back up, have marked expired. next best now is probably this (with the ebay plus 15% off coupon /$5off for 3+ if buying bulk)
