Update: made loads of pancakes for all my pancakes (housemates *) , breakfast tomorrow too. Boiled 10 eggs and going to make a quiche. Got 2 dozen as I couldn't see myself using Anymore than that in 1 night. Was kinda of sad as I couldn't buy Anymore without wasting them!!

    • +11

I'll get back to you tomorrow!

      • +10

what ever happens, just dont feed them after midnight!

      • Legend.

      • +3

Glad you didn't have to shell out much, cracking deal.

    • They did not hatch btw :(

  • +3

I'm in before anyone gets on their soap box.
You simply cannot complain about eggs for 5 cents!!
Upvote from me, despite being in NSW lol

    • 10,000 birds per hectare isn't ideal but it's a helluva lot better than cage or barn, and these eggs will just get thrown out tomorrow anyway if they aren't sold, so it's a ➕ from me for avoiding food wastage.

      • If it's not cage or barn then where are they kept?

        • +1

Barn is between cage and free range - the hens aren't on a caged production line like the horror photos but they don't have grass/access to sunlight and the number of hens by area can be higher than what is allowed by free range guidelines.

You do realise that they don't magically become inedible overnight? Probably good for another two weeks or more. Indefinitely if you freeze them.

    • +4

      Have you frozen your eggs?

    • +6

But put them in a saucepan filled with water to check - if they rise to the surface, throw them out.

      • -3

if you crack them open the surfaced ones, most likely not going off and edible.

    • +2

      Indefinitely if you freeze them.

      Uh no.

  • Great find OP..
Best before date 17 Sep Make sure you Eat it all by tomorrow :)

  • They'll be good for many more weeks if refrigerated

    • Depends if this was refrigerated section or not. I don't mind using eggs a week or two past the date but only if they've been in the fridge for most of that time. I've seen some stores stock them refrigerated, others not.
Unrefrigerated right up until the date I'd make my massive omelettes lol

Without those big letter on the box, I would have never guessed what was inside.

  • +15

You must be eggshausted after doing all that cooking.

    • +3

      That was a great yoke.

  • +4

Argh I thought I received a good deal buying those eggs for $1 tonight at Coles Tooronga!

  • +2

Eggs are a 'best before' not use by product. I've eaten cooked eggs a couple of weeks past date and they were perfectly fine in taste and safety. Eggs have a date code of more than a month after hatching so going over that by a short while is harmless. I wouldn't use them in a recipe that calls for raw egg however.

    • Its is very easy to check if eggs are off or not. If it floats in water dont eat it. Ignore the date.

Good one for school kids, should be fine for muck up day.

gonna buy some and donate them to HowToBasic

  • Should I drive 45 min to buy? Doubt anything left.

    • There probably would be some!

  • It may be worthwhile leaving some at the Parliament and ship some cartons to Canberra

  • Make dozens of frittata and freeze them :-) or share here

  • +2

    eggcellent deal

  • Someone should buy whatever is left, and then donate them to a local food bank. I would do this, but I don’t live anywhere near Port Melbourne

    • They go to charities anyway. No need to give Coles any more money.

  • Best Before vs Expired is different, go get em.

Gaston would need 25 cents to get large.

    • +3

Actually……..he'd need 20 cents to get large, but 25 cents to get roughly the size of a barge.

  • omelettes for breakfast, lunch and tea

I have 5 chickens which I keep in a coop overnight in the backyard. During the day they roam free in the backyard and even the front yard. If you’re lucky enough to live in a house with space then consider buying some chickens. They’re great pets and you’ll no longer have to support the egg industry. You will have fresh healthy eggs all the time.

    • Do they go into the coop at night voluntarily, or do you have to round them up?
How well do cats and chickens get on with each other?

      • +1

Also have chickens (3) and a cat. The chickens show themselves to their coop, I just close the door at dusk.

The cat tried stalking the chickens when they first met, but pretty quickly realised chickens have beaks and claws and gave that up. Young chicks would be a different story though, the cat would definitely kill them.

  • Cracking deal!

  • Any deals on caged eggs?

    • +5

Buy these and lock them up.

  • +2

Good on Woolies for offering them at 5c.doubt they really recoup anything back but they are letting people claim then and eat them instead of just easily throwing them in the bin.

    • Umm…. .. this was at Coles…..

      • +1

        Good on Woolies, though.

  • Are there any left?
