F j convenience store - 1 eddy avenue, shop 16, Haymarket: has opal top up but doesn't accept Amex
Southern towers convenience - 35-45 wentworth avenue, Sydney: no opal facility at all
Fastway convenience store- Shop 4/27 park street. Sydney: 40c surcharge
Anyone has tried the others please share your findings here.

  • Anyone bought from https://www.carcareproducts.com.au? they are listed on small shop in Leichhardt. I am wondering if I could order online..

    • Might be able to.

I once ordered some pet products and didnt even know the shop was a small shop got surprised cashback

      • +2

In 2016 I was in the Melbourne international airport and got just over $20 in Hungry Jacks and got the Shop Small bonus as the terminals they were using somehow belonged to Movida next to it and THAT was a Shop Small one.

        • Because it was owned by the owner of that store which are franchises.

          ie. small biz

    • +1

my husband tried it in 2016. He ordered online from car care products and received shop small credit.

      • It says in the terms and conditions that Online purchases are excluded from Shop Small.

        • But so are Gift Cards for every offer, technically speaking. I guess it comes down to whether AMEX will be able to distinguish between the shop terminal and online payment processor?

        • I just ordered from Nogga Café in st Kilda vic through Deliveroo and got an email saying I got $10 credit for small shop . Can anyone try ?!?!

    Interesting point b)

The below is a guideline for a qualifying Shop Small Merchant:
    a) Classified as a ‘small Merchant’ by American Express for the purpose
of Shop Small. This is deemed to be any Australian business location
that has processed less than AU$1,300,000 worth of American
    Express transactions for the 12 months prior to 30 September 2018;
    and
    b) Do not differentially surcharge American Express Card Members or
discourage American Express Card Members from using American
    Express Cards; and
    c) Have processed at least one American Express transaction between 1
    July 2018 and 30 September 2018; and
    d) Are not operating in industries that are deemed ineligible for Shop
    Small.

Walked to work and visited 4 small shops on the way.

One surcharged 25cents, but didnt realise I used amex and said next time they will charge higher.
    Other one surcharge was 40cents
    other one was 20cents.
    Other one was none.

    Not too bad!

    • for opal recharge?
care to share which small shops?

      • +1

        Bought lotto tickets

        • +1

Hmmmm, lotto tickets…. 40m jackpot tonight. Might we worth a small splurge.

        • that's a lot of lotto tickets :P

        • -1

Usually lottery purchases on credit card is treated as cash withdrawal and hence interest would start immediately on the whole balance until it is paid off. This would cause problem for people who take advantage of the interest free period by paying off the monthly balance.

          • +1

@ozbpro10: How does the credit card company know what I purchased?

What if I buy One lotto ticket, one Banana. They can know?

          • +1

@ozbpro10: Nope never happened to me before. CC purchases for lottery were treated just like normal credit transactions.

    • Did the emails come through?

      • +1

        yes

Went to 4 in Sydney CBD this morning. All on Amex map. All emails received instantly. All paypass / tap and go - but see note below for Lucky Charm Pavilion. Multiple cards ok no questions (I asked nicely first), except see note below for Allied Mart.

Oxford Street Newsagency, 18-32 oxford street, shop 1, Darlinghurst - 50c surcharge, clear signage of surcharge. Same fellow as every year, very efficient and polite.

Allied Mart, Shop 2 379-383 Pitt Street, Sydney - no surcharge, multiple cards ok but ONLY if they are in your name. Shop assistants were a bit wary of the whole thing, but processed it.

The Lucky Charm (Pavilion), Shop LG15, 580 George Street, Sydney - 40c surcharge. The machine at the lottery counter requires card insert and signature. But the other machine a little bit further in does tap and go. This is a very busy store so try and go at a quiet time. The shop assistant was nice and efficient.

Fastway Convenience Store, Shop 4/27 Park Street, Sydney - 40c surcharge, clear signage but note that if you do multiple cards they won't waive the surcharge just because you buy something else (which sounded fair enough). Shop assistant was great, said he was expecting all this with the Shop Small promo, and was happy to process it all.

    • This is for Opal cards right? I'm flying into Sydney tomorrow for a long weekend so will need to top up my card.

      • Yep, all 4 were for Opal card top ups.

    • +2

Thanks champ! To add onto your list:
City Mart 525, 525 George Street, Shop 1: same as Allied Mart, no surcharge but has to bring physical ID for each card
World Square Newsagency & Bookshop Shop 7, 387 Pitt St: has opal but won't accept amex
F J Convenience Store, 1 Eddy Avenue, Shop 16: has opal no amex

      • +1

City Mart 525 is now claiming Opal Card server is down and they can't topup.
2 mins late, Allied Mart worked just fine.

      • Went to both Allied Mart and City Mart 525 this arvo. Both accepted Google Pay with no ID, no surcharge, but limited to two cards at each store.

    • +2

I did my opal top up at Darling Park Newsagency (201 Sussex Street, Shop 1, Sydney). 70c surcharge and they requested it to be paid by chip and PIN.

      • Did u get confirmation email?

        • +1

          yes, immediately

    • +1

Forum Newsagency, St Leonards - Refused Amex like last year

  • If I spend $20 and get $10 back, does that count towards $10 credit card spend or the full $20? (for westpac black)

    • Full $20, you will get $10 back a few days later.

  • +5

    Just a thought

Let’s all cop the $1-2 surcharges on opal because if we start dibby dobbing to Amex there won’t be anymore outlets to do opal runs in future promos

    • -1

Those stores shouldnt be on the Amex Small shop then, its a contract between those two.

Its also illegal to charge more than the cost of the surcharge.

They can charge more for AMEX as the surcharge is higher 1.5% but not overcharge

      • +3

It’s great being a stickler 🙄🙄🙄for some things

But when it affects your hip pocket because they get removed like some places have from people complaining then I’ll be happy to pay an extra 60 cents then lose $9.40 because I have to pay full price on opal

        • -3

There are more places you can go to… a lot more

  • If a business isn't showing on the shop small map, but are a small business and accepts amex, would we still get the $10 credit?

  • +2

Used my 6 cards for Opal at The Lucky Charm Pavillion. $0.40 surcharge.

While they were processing my recharges, overheard one of the assistants on the phone to the boss telling them Shop Small starts today and they're expecting heaps of people in. From their conversation it seems they will be settling on a 5 cards maximum going forward.

As mentioned by someone else, this is a busy location. Try to go when it's a quiet time.

    • +1

That's why it's first in best dressed, it'll get harder in a few days time, this year's opal run is a lot harder now.

    • they are now limiting 2 cards each time

      • Did you recharge there?

        • yes, I did. Two cards each time and requeue…

    • +1

Can confirm, they are allowing 2 recharge per day during peak hours, but 5 recharge during off peak.
      Ask nicely.

    Hi guys,
Perhaps this only affects WA - but I've contacted three WA businesses that are listed on the Shopsmall map (all restaurants) and all three of them said they don't accept Amex payment at all. I've contacted Amex about the businesses. Probably best to call/message and check first before attempting a ShopSmall run in WA….

    • Yeah had the same experience this morning too

  • CIBO is not on it this year…

Bought some scratchies just then lol

wish me luck it's my bday!!

    • Happy birthday :-)

As a friendly suggestion to all Ozbargainer friends here, ask before you shop. Went to do a shop small in a cafe today after confirming that they are on the map (and paid AMEX in the past visits to the cafe). Checked that there are no visible non-acceptance of AMEX signs around the payment area. Dined, then went to pay only to find out apparently that they "changed terminals recently" and AMEX cards "haven't activated yet". Displeased to say the least, but already eaten the food, otherwise I would give everything back to them lol. Moral of the story; always ask explicitly for AMEX acceptance before you dine…the story does have a happy ending though, I asked for a receipt and contacted AMEX and reported the merchant, and they did a one-off good-will credit (but I really needed to push for it). Time wasted, but not a bad end outcome.

    • +1

Similar story at a Burwood Dumpling place.
Reported to Amex. It's not fair to other SS merchants who are honouring the payment who's on the same map.

      • How do you report to Amex btw? Is there an easy way from Amex My Account page or has to go thru shopsmall page?

        • +1

I went through the live chat after logging in online.

      • @Jacktator Is that Yangs Dumpling at Burwood?

        • +1

Yes, the one Burwood Station Exp one.

    • This happened to me last 2 years and amex credited my account x 2

  • +1

Dunno if anyone read the terms and conditions, but it says online purchases are excluded.

For those near Broadway Shopping Centre (rip working in the city), Chemistworks is a participating retailer (and already playing Christmas carols; the poor staff who have to listen to them for the next two months)

  • +6

    Opal Topup:
Sydney Central, Wu's Pharmacy. 3% Surcharge, $20.60 for $20. Very nice grandpa, don't mind multiple cards.
    Already got credit email.

    • +1

Good to see they are back in shop small list. Last year for some reason they were excluded

      • +1

I suspect because their turnover was over 1.3million. thus not a 'small biz' any more.

        • +1

well, in that case, looks like business has not been that good this year. Although most likely all the amex shop small opal top they did in 2016 probably pushed them over the small shop limit

          • +2

@FiDad: Well there is that thing call the Sydney Light Rail. Never ending eye sore

    • +1

Glad to hear they are still part of shop small. That grandma is so accepting with multiple amex cards every year

      • She's so kind isn't she?

      • Yeah i remember her. Very nice old lady.

    • Do they have pay pass? All my supplementary cards are in Apple pay only.

      • +1

Yes, but as with all EFTPOS machines, it may not work so bring your supplementary card just in case you have to insert the card.

      • They do, by default, unless you request chip & pin.

  • -1

    7× Mykis locked and loaded.

    • Where from? Also are you in WA?

      • he said myki, i think it means VIC

        • Their profile says WA.

    • $995*7 ?

      • $20x7 if that was a serious question

  • Does anyone know how I could go about mining all of the listed shops from the map to create an excel spreadsheet to make it easier to lookup stores?

    • +4

2017 list. Will shoot a message to thydzik to see if he is doing one for 2018.

  • The Amex Essentials card is not eligible for this offer? Why?
Edit: Nevermind. Used a pc to register and it worked. Wasn't working on the phone. Strange!!

  • City Convenience 1/525 George Street - first time no surcharge, second time claimed machine not working, email came instantly

    • You originally wrote Lucky Pavilion, then City Convenience. I think you mean City Mart?

      • true. I realized there was another thread mentioning it already, so updated with another one I tried + comment the post above
The address has only one store there. Yes, the receipt of Opal shows City Mart 525 Pty Lt.

    Still have to get more.

    • Cool thanks

    • Awesome and legendary work. What else needs to be done?

      • +2

Thanks, need to add more shops from the scrape.

    • Please use the shop identifier so I can merge with my list. I have 41k+ stores on mine :)

      • Its there hidden in the first column. I'll be merging the other stores scraped tonight.

Did my Opal/lottery runs after work at Wu’s Pharmacy, The Lucky Charm Pavilion, The Lucky Charm QVB and The Lucky Charm Westfield Sydney. The Westfield Sydney store charged $40.80 to one Amex even though at the very beginning I asked if I could pay with two cards; she was too busy not serving me as she kept looking at her colleague when I was trying to get her to serve me …

Two Shop Smalls left! (Only have two primary Amex cards and no supplementaries)

    • Have u got confirmation email from AMEX for each of the lucky charm location u went? Just want to know if it works at different location for the same business name.

    • To confirm: 3% surcharge at Wu's, 2% at Lucky Charm Pavilion? Lucky Charm Westfield is Westfield Centrepoint? Any surcharge for Lucky Charm QVB?

      • +4

        3% surcharge at Wu's
        Yes

        2% at Lucky Charm Pavilion?
        Yes

Lucky Charm Westfield is Westfield Centrepoint?
Yes but no one calls it Centrepoint any more haha the official name is Westfield Sydney (2% surcharge)

Any surcharge for Lucky Charm QVB?
        Yes, 2% surcharge

        • Ha thanks. Just making sure the data is correct on the wiki and maps.

        • And no tap & go Lucky Charm QVB:(

  • Anyone know which newsagents in Brisbane CBD will do Go Card Top Ups using this offer?

Checked the map and it says:

    Eagle St News
    123 Eagle Street, Shop 7
    Brisbane City, Queensland

However Eagle St News has their address listed as 70 Eagle Street so not sure if it's the same place?

    • Newsextra Casino News on 131 George St. $0.20 surcharge. Sucks that Nextra in the Myer Centre shut down. It was one of my go-to places in previous years and they didn't have a surcharge.
