They charged me a 3% surcharge ($0.60) when I went there! The older lady there kept complaining and going on and on about Amex costing them 3.8% per transaction. Terrible…

The Nextra in the Myer Centre just moved to the opposite of the group of atms there (no longer called Nextra though). They were happy for me to split payments and best of all, no Amex surcharge there.

        • Did you get statement credit emails for your nextra transactions?

          • +1

@ilubbargains: Yes I did for both of those.

            • @VlVh: Hey mate, how long did it take for you get the credit. My transactions are still pending.

              • +1

@Zacsik: I did the transactions on the weekend, the credit came through on monday or tuesday.

        • Is the Nextra now called Myer News and Gifts, on Level E? Just trying to confirm, cross-checking with details on the Translink site.

          • @mastablasta: Definitely on level E, but I can't remember the name sorry. I think it is that one, because I remember the name containing at least 4 words (ie too long to remember). It's located just on the sloping path entrance with the ATMs. I can confirm that the cashback has come in on my Amex's for that location.

            • @VlVh: Ok cheers, will check it out.

              • +1

@mastablasta: Also, I have used "Perry House News" on 131 Elizabeth and confirmed the cash back works

        • Just went to Casino News on George St, 1% surcharge, credit came about 15 mins later

I also went to South Bank News and Perry House News and got $20 no surcharge at either, but haven't yet obtained the cashback

Now to find 2 more… the Amex shop small map indicates 40 Creek Street and 123 Eagle Street are both on there, can anyone confirm?

          • @isthisreallife22: Interesting - my wife went to Perry House News this afternoon and was charged a 2% surcharge.

            • @mastablasta: Same. Initially no surcharge but the old fella at Perry house cancelled the transaction and added 2% surcharge once he saw my card. Going to look into getting credit card skins..

          • @isthisreallife22: How did you go with creek and eagle?

        • VIVh are you confirming that the newsagent opposite the ATMs in the myer centre is included?

What was the retailer called in your cashback email / transaction history?

          • @isthisreallife22: Yes, 'Myer News and Gifts' is an eligible shop small partner. The retailer in the cashback email is called "Nextra".

      A bit more information

lucky charm galleries - $0.4 - better to go when it's quiet. I have done 2 X $100 Opal top up's, split payment using 5 cards each time. Need to insert the card and enter pin for each.

fastway 27 park - $0.4 - Friendly staff, Quick & easy.Need to insert the card and enter pin for each.I have done 2 X $100 Opal top up's, split payment using 5 cards each time

world news harbourside - $0.2 - Busy during lunch time. They charge 1%($0.2 on $20). Can tap & go. Paid 10 lots of $20.20, and the lady has recharged my opal $20 X 10 times, rather than 2 x $100.

St Martin's City Newsagency - 31 market st - $0.5 - Just went there before their close time. Can tap & go .I have done 2 X $100 Opal top up's, split payment using 5 cards each time

lucky charm 188 pitt st westfield - $0.4 - I have done multipe opal cards top up of smaller amounts, had to insert and enter pin for each of them. The lady was a bit fussy saying the EFTPOS terminal may hang if we do multiple transactions and was a bit reluctant to do more than 2 split payments.

      • World News Harbourside are charging 40c surcharge today. Allowed me to do lots of cards, though. I also noticed they loaded the credit $20 at a time - apparently, it's a limitation of their accounting system. Only took a minute, so didn't bother me.

    • world news harbourside is now charging $0.4 and two cards each time.

    • World news harbourside surcharge 40c for a $20 opal top up now, there is a signage for 2% amex surcharge for opal top up

  • Generally how long are these emails taking to come through? Like I made a purchase about an hour ago and heard nothing.

I know the other AMEX offers usually come through instantaneously.

    • +2

      Instantly.

Possible that the shop you went to isn't participating in Shop Small or you hadn't registered your Amex card?

      • Definitely is on the map and I've definitely registered. I shall contact AMEX today I guess. Best number to ring Re: Shop Small?

        • +1

Just shoot through the email and a copy of your receipt. To be honest I have had emails not arriving but still have got the $10 so I would not worry too much.
If you play your cards right you might even get 6 uses out of that single Amex.

        • +1

I will wait for 5 days before i contact Amex. They will tell you to wait for a few days for the statement credit to appear. But take a screen shot to prove that it is listed in the shopsmall - to back you up.

        • +1

No idea; sorry. Maybe call the general number on the back of the card? What's the shop, if you want us to double check on the map for you?

        • +1

Thanks guys. Email just came through about 1.5hrs after purchase :)

  • I’m landing in Sydney in about an hour and wanted to know if there was an Opal shop small I can use up at the airport as I need to travel from the airport (as well as around the place) for the long weekend (yes I’m Victorian).

    • airtasker?

  • +1

Does the map of shops on the AMEX website not work for anyone else or is it just me? Tried on phone, laptop and iPad and it has an error loading each one.

    • Works here for me both on phone and computer.

      • It's working again

        • Annoying as I THOUGHT that Hard Rock Cafe was on Shop Small but when I went into the map search it would not pop up (even though it recognised the name) and so I just paid the entire bill on the single AmEx. I got the congratulations I got $10 email a minute after I paid. Grrrrr. Opportunity lost on a $60 lunch.

    • +2

Doesnt work on Chrome for me but works on IE for me.

OK, the Wiki page with Opal & Myki are up to date. Opal Maps and Myki Maps have also been updated. Keep commenting with success/failures as well as any fees as they tend to go up throughout the month. Let me know if there is anything that needs to be fixed.

On a side note, I topped up my Myki and got confirmation emails from Cigarette Express Convenience (YE MAO PTY LTD) & Foodworks (Gertrude St Mini Mart). Cigarette Express/Ye Mao isn't on the official Amex map despite getting emails. Same with Brunswick St News which has also been confirmed.

    • great job!
amex thanks you for your service!

Went to Swanston St Lotto (no paypass + 2% surcharge) but i didnt go ahead, coz i dont have any physical card with me..

    • +1

      Myki topups:

-Zouki rmh, no surcharge, got the email.
-Halfpenny Pharmacy Coburg, no surcharge, got the email.

    • Has anyone experienced cashback delays on some stores? I got cashbacks for 3 out of 5 stores.

I'm still waiting for Halfpenny Pharmacy and Brunswick St News. I got emails but no cashback yet. Also, Brunswick St News came up as Fortune Fortune P L on my account charges.

      • 4 out of 5 stores I received statement credit back. I did not receive email conformation from one of the merchant I visited, the merchant is listed in the shopsmall map, so far also no statement credit back yet. You will be fine as long as you received an email from AMEX, you will definitely received your statement credit.

        • Thanks just as you said I now got cashback for all :)

      • Please let us know if you got cashback from brunswick st news, want to do a run around the area

    • +1

Topped up myki at both Daily News on Lt Collins, CBD and Victoria Harbour Pharmacy, Docklands today and received emails. No surcharges and both were willing to split $60 top up over 3 cards.

      • Topped up at The Summit Convenience today successfully too. Same conditions as my above post, although the staff did take my cards to tap directly on the machine.

Looks like Lucky Charm Sydney are sick of it already

Went to QVB, line too long, move on
Went to Pavilion, waited till no more customers, was only allowed 2 of 3 cards
Went to Westfields Pitt Street, only allowed 1

As I was leaving Pavillion, the lady there was saying to her colleague, yesterday the other cashier had 2 person with 10 cards…

    • +3

Why cant people just go to the store once a day.

      geez

That's what Im doing, and I have 70 shop smalls to do

    • +1

Can confirm that the Lucky Charm in Westfield Sydney were only allowing one card this afternoon. The store was completely empty when I went, so I asked if they could do more. But the lady said they're afraid if they do more, word will get out and they'll be swamped by OzBargainers, lol

  • This guy is part of opal retailers and shop small

    https://www.smh.com.au/business/small-business/the-new-insta…

Anyone wanna insta him and ask if surcharge for opal?

    Redfern Convenience Store
152a Redfern St Redfern, NSW 2016
    Ph: 02 9319 1112

    • I called and he said surcharge is $1 for $20 Opal Top up.

  • The shop I went to in the morning had no surcharge for opal top up now in afternoon they charge a 40cent fee.

She didn't even tell me .

They even actively have the shop small logo and bandaner.

    Dodgy!

  • +2

the guy at Devonshire Convenience store is very nice and no surcharge for opal top ups! Did multiple cards no problems!

    • sorry cannot find the store on the EXCEL list, though there is a DEVONSHIRE CONVENIENCE STORE record on shop small map search but show nothing… did you get email or see actual credit?

    • refused amex opal topup 1 x $20 this morning @ Devonshire claiming make little money not too nice

  • Might buy some mobile phone recharges. But the closest newsagent that I used in previous years is no longer on the map,and all of the other newsagents arent that close to me. Just wondering, do chemists/pharmacies sell mobile phone recharges? I see a lot of them everywhere

  • +31

That's the raw data, use how ever you want.
    https://thydzik.com/amex/amex_stores_2018.xlsb

    • -4

Thanks for that. The spreadsheet doesn’t open on my mobile, like it did last year though.

      • Have you got Excel installed? It opens.

      • I saved as Excel binary just to reduce file size, I don't think it will open on anything else except Excel.

    • +2

      Thanks Thydzik. Much appreciated.

    • +2

      Thanks Champ!

This year was really easy to scrape compared to other years.

      That's the url,
      https://bdaas.americanexpress.com/api/servicing/v1/maps/?&ad…

replace the lat (XXLATXX) and long (XXLONXX) with the area you want to search and it will return a list of shops.

      • +1

someone requested the code I use.
        https://thydzik.com/amex/amex-2018.php.html

I use WAMP, which has PHP and mySQL installed,

I read the lat/lng from database table amex_latlon, and write the results to database table amex_stores.

But you could do it straight to a text file which I have done in previous years.

  • Anyone on the Gold Coast got any got tips?
    I use
    1. Harbour town fruit barn - get groceries
    2. Bottle o at Sundale Meriton for alcohol.

Not sure if a news agency might do gocard credit?

  • +7

Opal today, this is done early morning when the stores are relatively quiet. Please be nice and offer to step aside when other customers turn up, it helps to ensure easy top ups for everyone else and for the next Shop Small.
Quay Newsagency: 32c surcharge, does multiple cards, tap
Lucky Charm QVB: 40c surcharge, does multiple cards, swipe
Fastway 27 Park: 40c surcharge, does multiple cards, tap
Lucky Charm Pavilion: 40c surcharge, max 2 cards, tap

Just went to do my first shop at HappyLemon Swanston St and they did not offer AMEX even though it is listed on the AMEX small shop list. Make sure to check with store before purchase.

    • +4

Just ring AMEX and they will most likely give you a $10 credit

      • +2

Thanks. I did after the purchase. She offered to give me 1000 points credit (~$7 , according to her). Not $10 but now I've got an extra redemption. Their customer service is wonderful. Anytime I've had issues, they are quick to credit me.

        • Thanks. I will ask for 1000 points as they always miss some of mine (multiple cards).

1000 points worth $30 to $40 to me.

          Their service is amazing.

          • @IanC: Can I pls know how is it worth that much ?

            • +2

@SydOzber: Using Singapore Air redemption in Business Class

Saver Fare BNE - LHR/CDG etc 210000 points return last time I looked.

Air fare anywhere between $6500 and $7500 therefore 1000 points roughly between $30 and $40

For those in Melbourne, I personally found the Emporium Gift Card purchase to be really worthwhile. The GC can then be used anywhere inside Emporium including Myer (but not DJ for some reason). The guys are very nice so go easy on them.

    • anywhere even food outlets? is there additional fee or charge for GC?

      • $1.50 card issue fee. Can be used in any of the food court or restaurants inside Emporium. Unfortunately I don’t think Emporium has supermarkets.

      • And no, just the card issue fee, no additional surcharges because of payment by CC.

    • Thanks. Didn’t realize they were still doing it this year.

      • They didn't do it last year, only in 2016 and apparently there was very long lines.

        • Yeah. I was the original poster on that deal. Was a great one as well as used it all up at Myer.

          • +1

@danielh: Can’t complain with near 50% off things such as Apple Products!

    • im assuming buying that from the concierge desk ? and do they allow multiple cards ?

      • +1

They are nice enough to allow split, they said the system was complaining with more than 2 split, but they were so nice I just did a few $40 GC’s split into 2x $20 amounts (one would be $21.50 due to card issuance fee)

        • oki.. will try that during off peak time.. can i confirm its next to the topshop desk ?

          • +1

@annielee: Correct, that's the one. Its right beside Nespresso.

            • @joeiwu: thanks for your prompt reply :-)

              • @annielee: Good luck!

                • @joeiwu: went this morning, but cant split at all :-( so i just bought 4 giftcards..and each with $1.50 surcharge..
