        • I see, time to put Nextra Westfield back on my list.

    • It's a 5% surcharge for Amex. They have a sign on the counter.

      • +1

That's a bit much. The retailer seems to be profiting from "surcharge"

    • I did 2 Opal card top ups there, first time $1 surcharge, second time no surcharge (win)

  • +1

    1 card for Opal.

Lucky Charm stores great as usual, very friendly. 2 card limit, 40c surcharge. Hit up QVB, Galleries and Pavilion.

World Newsagency also good, 40c surcharge (20c of they don't notice it's Amex).

St Martin's City Newsagency - tried first time this year, actually a 80c surcharge, guy serving didn't say a word the whole time.

I saved the offer to my Amex app. Haven't been getting emails but the offer status is now 'redeemed'.

  • +2

NEXTRA Top Ryde confirmed for Opal top up, no surcharge.
I used 2 Amex cards for 2 Opal cards and got the email confirmations.
Note the name on the shop is now called "Gifts n' News" however the Amex statement, email and map still say NEXTRA.
Shop 1029 Level LG2 Top Ryde.

Suggest the wiki refer to it as NEXTRA (Gifts n' News) Top Ryde.

    • Suggest the wiki refer to it as NEXTRA (Gifts n' News) Top Ryde.

Have updated wiki and the map.

      • Went there today, no charge, only allow one per person. Very rude lady

        • Maybe next year we'll have to add a rudeness section to the tables. :)

          • @neil: Yes will be good idea.

Just add an extra column for multiple card accepted, if yes then can put a number to represent the max number of card member tried and success.

  • +2

just went to 375 george st news in Brisbane and can confirm it worked for go card no surcharge and tap with phone worked.Got the email already. I ll have to come back with my other amex :) didn't want to be annoying, and walking is good for you

  • Spent in a couple of shops on AMEX's site on Saturday, but one received no email confirmation and no credit, the other shop got credit on Monday. What is going on?

    • What is going on?

I don't work for Amex so can't really help, sorry!

  • +1

Confirmed Amex credit for Go card top up at Nextra Westfield Garden city on level 1. No surcharge or minimum spend.

  • +3

Just confirming Toscano's offer can be combined, so pretty much 50% off in store when spending $50. One notable deal is Bonsoy, a box of 6 is $24. Get 2 boxes + something for $2 (such as a bunch of spring onions) and essentially its $2 each for Bonsoy. Have NEVER seen it this cheap before so I ended up getting a couple of boxes.

    • +1

      Sorry is this in syd?

Never mind. Googled and seems like a melb store.

    • +1

I went to the Kew Toscano's and was very happy to get five 320g Meredith Valley Marinated Goats Cheese's for $9.99 each (normally $13.00 in Coles) and with a single Birdseye chili managed to get it all for just over $50.

VERY VERY good value if you like this cheese.

Effectively $5 each with the double stack of Amex Shop Small and this Toscano deal.

  • +2

There are very limited number of shops this time.

  • Just did Sydney Opal run with 2 Amex cards

Allied mart on Pitt Street - all good, no surcharge
The Lucky Charm Galleries - all good, 40c surcharge.
The Lucky Charm Pavilion - all good, 40c surcharge.

  • +1

    I did three this morning
    Lucky charm QVB, Sydney - 2% (40c on $20)
Darling park news agency, darling park sydney, 70c surcharge
Darling convenience Store, King st sydney - no surcharge (I used apple pay)

    • Darling convenience Store, King st sydney - no surcharge (I used apple pay)

Was that previously an Ezy Mart?

    • Darling convenience Store, King st Sydney (Yes, still has Ezy Mart signage) charged me $1 surcharge today before I realised that it was that much. I was using the actual cards.

      • Just recharged using 2 physical cards today. Nice guy didn't charge me any surcharge.

        • charged me $1 as well

  • +10

I just discovered that "HEY YOU" is part of the shop small as well.

This means you can order through them and get the discount. or load up on credit for it!!

    Min top up is $30.

Your purchase at HEY YOU just earned you a $10 credit.
Remember, your Shop Small offer is valid up to 5 times at different
participating small businesses for a total of $50 back*.

    • iirc they have a surcharge for amex cards

      • +1

Not if you top up. No fee

    • Really, topped up couple days ago with $50 on my AMEX. Will have to check statement.

Edit: 1 .Didn't get any cashback for my HEY YOU top ups on 2nd Nov or 12th Nov, but I can see them on the map list as you have advised.

Edit: 2. Terms and Conditions say in-store spend, so top ups should not be eligible. Interesting that Hey You is even on the list, they don't have a physical store.

      • Just checked my statement, I got -$10 for topping up $30 for HEY YOU.

  • +2

Just did my round until my Opal got maxed out at $250 (didn't know there was a maximum)

MLC Newsagency - 3%/60c (took all 3 amex cards and was able to use Apple Pay)
Lucky Charm Westfield Sydney - 2%/40c (took all 3 cards and was able to use Apple Pay)
Lucky Charm Galleries - 2%/40c (2 card limit and had to use the physical card)
Lucky Charm QVB - 2%/40c (no card limit but had to use the physical card)
Lucky Charm Pavilion - 2%/40c (took all 3 cards and was able to use Apple Pay)

    • -1

so jealous. i need to wait till my opal credit under $50 (i have 2 cards) yeah max is $250

      • Yea, I thought I could do it all in one hit, oh well I'll do the rest next week #firstworldproblem

        • +2

Just get another Opal adult card. No cost to have more cards. Usually these places you went have empty ones.

    • hi mate, where exactly is the MLC newsagency?
is that in the same level as the food court?
I've tried to circle the food court yesterday but I couldn't seem to find it.

  • Sushi Hub in Sydney is not participating… Sad…

    • Their turnover is over 1.3m

      • Weird. I would have thought that it was per franchise. Is the original post implying that all Sushi Hubs are not part of shop small or perhaps all Sudney ones?

        • Last year they were part (all branches). this year not.

    • Friend confirms Sushi Hub at The Galeries in Sydney CBD is participating. She didn't intend to claim but got the credit later.

      • is there anyway your friend can confirm with some screen short of credit or email notification for the 2018 shopsmall promotion? nothing came and amex said it is not participating…

        • Maybe they meant Sushi Hotaru

  • +1

Kings Langley Newsagency Cnr James Cook Dr & Ravenhill Street Kings Langley NSW 2147

    3% surcharge

  • Apparently eligible merchants MUST display the shop small logo, otherwise if they don't accept Amex, Amex will not credit the cashback when you report/call them.

  • +1

Dee Why Newsagency - Howard Avenue - 2% surcharge - however person calculated incorrectly - I had 4 Amex cards. Did a total $80 Opal top up in one go and charged $20.10 on each card. Email received from Amex

  • Disappointed in Shop Small this year - where previous years pretty much all small shops in Sydney (not part of a franchise) were triggering $10 credits, now it seems that if they're not on the list, you simply won't get $10 back. I'm talking about cafes, grocery shops etc.

  • Just found out the Shop Small offer applies to my Private Health Insurance too! =D

    • May I know which insurance you are with?

      • Healthcare Insurance Ltd (HCI Ltd)

Found them on the Amex Shop Small map afterwards too

  • -5

Don’t the opal top ups at 7-eleven count??

    • What makes you think 7-Eleven counts as a Shop Small? They're massive, like Caltex and Shell.

      • -2

I saw a couple of stores in north Sydney and paramatta church street listed in the map

        • That are 7-Eleven stores? Mind sharing the address with us so we can verify?

          • -1

@kerfuffle: You can search with the keyword ‘7eleven’ In the map. There were actually 100s listed. One of the address was near my workplace

            • +1

@thriver: Check the Shop Small map box in your filters. Yours wasn't checked. Watch those 7-Elevens disappear as they're not participating in Shop Small.

That being said, if you don't believe me, do try it out and let us know if you get the credit …

            • @thriver: Sorry my bad.. the shop small filter was not correctly set in my map :(

  • On Sat 3 Nov, shopped at Fruitezy in Chatswood Chase on 2 cards, emails and credits received. However transaction on 7 Nov - no email and no credit received. Today shopped again, no email received. All on different cards and all registered for SS. Anyone else having issues with Fruitezy?

  • Just found one restaurant despite listed in amex small shop, refuse amex card. Will fwd receipt to amex and ask for $10 credit

    • geebus, who neg me… and why…

  • Myki top up:
Pinewood Authorised Newsagency, Prahran Central Pharmacy and Prahran Central Pharmacy all no surcharge and email received.
Was about to top up at Swanston Street Lotto, but they were charging 60c so didn't end up topping up at this location.

    • Pinewood Authorised Newsagency, Prahran Central Pharmacy and Prahran Central Pharmacy all no surcharge and email received.

Do you mean Prahran Convenience for the second one?

      • Ah yes. Thanks for picking that up.

  • +1

Walsh's Village Pharmacy Maroubra- OPAL top up - no surcharge - split payment across multiple cards. Email received from Amex

  • +2

Anyone else finding that a lot of their previous years Shop Small haunts are no longer on the map?

Hesitant to just try it in case I don't get the cashback…

    • +3

gee .. just dont do it if they are not on the list. why even think/hesitant, i am amazed.

      • Most of the Opal/Myki retailers aren't on the list…

In the past somebody managed to find a dump of data from Amex somehow, which had loads more than what was showing on the map.

        • if they found out they can choose not honouring the credit.
so, why bother. seriously, like there are hundreds already.

    • My local pizza shop is no longer on the map, sticker on the window is gone as well. Still worth a shot as I've gotten the email and credit before when a place is not on the map.

  • +14

Opal run today with a mate to help with my 10 Amex cards:

    Name Address Suburb Surcharge Remarks
Fastway Convenience 4/27 Park St Sydney - Opal machine not working ☹️
Oxford St Newsagency 1/18-32 Oxford St Darlinghurst $0.50 Grandpa was awesome! Very quick. 10x$20 using Apple Pay. He didn't know that you could put $200 on an Opal card, but now he does.
St Martin's City Newsagency 31 Market Street Sydney - Store was closed ☹️
The Lucky Charm (Westfield) Pitt Street, Westfield Centrepoint Sydney $0.40 We did 2x$20 each via swipe. My mate was asked to re-queue for the second recharge as other customers were waiting. Go off-peak hours if possible.
The Lucky Charm (QVB) 84/455 George St Sydney $0.40 We did 2x$20 each via swipe.
The Lucky Charm (Galleries) Shop 22/500 George St Galleries Sydney $0.40 We did 2x$20 each via swipe.
The Lucky Charm (Pavillion) Pavilion Centre, 580 George Street Sydney - Store was closed ☹️
City Mart 525 525 George Street, Shop 1 Sydney No surcharge The guy did $40 on one card and $20 on another via contactless. It was too late before I realised it. My mate split the $40 over two cards. Just make sure to confirm with him that you want to split over two cards.
Allied Mart 379 Pitt Street Sydney No surcharge We did 2x$20 each via contactless.
Wu's Pharmacy 629 George street Haymarket $0.60 Grandma was so sweet 😊. She knew the deal. 10x$20 using Apple Pay. Be patience with her, took a good 2-3 minutes to process the transaction but I can't complain.

I should have checked the opening hours before I went but I did manage to use most of my offers for 10 Amex cards. Will use the remaining on food/groceries.

Overall, we spent $836.80 (including surcharge of $15.80). Got all 40 confirmation emails. Looking at $400 credit.

Thanks to those who contributed to the Opal top up list. Really helped a lot!

    See ya next year.

    • +1 for the table (even though I'm from Melbourne). :-)

    • When are off-peak hours at these stores? I work from home past 15 years and don't really know when these stores get busy in the city. Thanks a lot.

      • +1

I work from home past 15 years

Why do you need Opal top up then? Please don't say doing it for the mate.

    • Thanks, my favourites this year in Sydney were: Allied Mart, Wu's Pharmacy and MLC Newsagency.

    • Hi, are the Lucky Charms treated as different merchants? Got the credits separately? Thanks

  • There are some shops on the map don't match up with the local shop name. Will the deal work?

    • +1

Yes, sometimes the AMEX 'business' name is not the 'public' name on the storefront.

      • Should we clarify and how can we clarify before using the card?

        • Do an ABN search

          • +1

@stoodamire: EG. In Amex there is a place called "Jack Squires Randell" at "625 Camberwell Road, Camberwell (VIC)".

It is really a Restaurant called "Enter Neighbour". Here is the ABN search for it.

FYI, I'm taking the piss a little as I do not expect people to do ABN searches every time but I'd just recommend that if you really want to enter a potentially unconfirmed Shop Small venue that you just do a quick check online or even call them up to ask.

            • @danielh: Thanks a lot mate! Just got the credit for brunch in Enter Neighbour thanks to you! It’s one of my favourite cafes

        • I just look at the map and ask if they accept amex. Eg. Mrs Fields is trading as Hallchi.

  • Having really rotten luck this year. Went to one place where I got the email (Bovine and Swine in Newtown) but no cashback.

Then yesterday wife went to a liquor store we used last year, where the proprietor happily proclaimed they were definitely Shop Small this year (wife didn't check for the signs/stickers), but no email.

    • Seems like the email might take some days for some. Still waiting email from the dentist on Friday, they had the sticker and even told me about the promotion (they were happy to split payment)

  • I went to St Leonards Forum Newsagency to top up my opal. It's on the list for the small business offer. They said they don't accept AMEX at all!!

    • This has always been the case for the last 2 shop smalls. Report them to amex

      • do you know where or how to report?
        link on this thread https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/219095
is now only for CBA issued amex. when we select other it says please call
but the problem with call, i cant attached receipt

        • Try online chat with your account?

          • @Turd: will do now thanks. forgot about chat.
there is section to upload documents once you login.
and follow up with the chat.

            staff says:
This is unfortunate from the merchant's end. They enroll themselves for the offer and they should honor it when the customer shows up. I checked and the previous rep already forwarded this to the dedicated team to get the merchant removed from the list. will give you $10 bla bla bla

  • Anyone bought from Bagworld and got their $10 credit?

Bagworld sent around an email claiming they are part of shop small, but have yet to receive an email from amex. Worringly, they are not listed on the shop small spreadsheet or shop small map…

    • Aren't Bagworld an online retailer? The terms and conditions state that they won't pay the credit for online

      • +2

I got credit for hey you and deliveroo.

        Both definitely online stores

        • Not really 'traditional' online stores though but I'm glad to hear that both food ordering apps scored you the credit

      • Aren't Bagworld an online retailer?

Yeh they are, but Bagworld sent an email saying they are part of the Shop small promotion. Will give it a few days, but will be a bit cranky if I have to wsste time following up with Bagworld or amex.

        • Maybe they're just jumping on the bandwagon, hoping to get unsuspecting punters like yourself. e.g. DJs are participating in Christmas Frenzy to try and capture the Click Frenzy audience, even though they are't participating in Click Frenzy

  • +1

No issues with Zouki Royal Melb Hospital for Myki topup.

Just go during non-peak hours (i.e. not lunch time, or the morning rush) and be flexible with waiting etc.

  • For those in the north-west, parents topped up Opal at Oakhill Village Newsagency in Castle Hill. No surcharge.

  • Apparently some shops aren't under Shop Small this year because of the way the structured merchants internally. For example, if shops have are part of some industry group that have a special deal with Amex then they're considered a "Managed Account" even if their turnover is below the threshold.

  • +2

Anyone recall Amex increasing redemption value of points in previous years during this campaign?

    • Yes.

      • Hoping it’s coming soon, I recall it being towards the end of November last year
