We are concentrating more along the lines of the Vacuum V3

  • to late for any December deals to tokyo right?

    • Its peak time so yeah, sorry

  • +2

I woke up not needing to go to Japan, I have no time to go to Japan, yet somehow I now know that I need to make a quick 4/5 day trip to Tokyo.

  • Anyone havng trouble using afterpay. Tried phone and laptop . Same error.

    • Yep keep getting an error using afterpay on phone and pc

  • nothing during April school holidays :( We miss out all these deals and end up playing double for flights during holidays :(

    • April is usually peak season with Cherry Blossoms etc.

    • You just missed out on JAL for $719 Melb.

I bought in, because I'm addicted to JAL now. The only airline that provides same day departure and arrival, so no time wasted.

      • :(

  • Are all the flights out of Melbourne departing at 6am? Gotta be there at least 2 hours early so 4am. Live an hour away from the airport, so gotta leave the house at 3am :(

    • +1

Hopefully at 3am the traffic's a lot lighter, so you might be able to push it to 3.20am or so!

    • lol Mate I do that once a month to go to bloody Brisbane.

    • I don't think you have to be there 2 hours early. First leg is domestic.

  • Any itinerary suggestions for the first time Japan traveller? Which city should I fly to first?

    • +1

Tokyo is always a safe choice as it is very tourist friendly. There's also quite a bit to explore. Osaka, and by extension Kyoto, is good if you want to see cultural landmarks such as temples and shrines. If you buy a rail pass they are about 3 hours apart (Tokyo-Osaka) by bullet train.

Just got back from Japan last week from a 12 day holiday. The same deal last year. 2 adults & 2 kids $1150 gold coast - narita.

2 tips -(1) buy the "Welcome Japan" sim from nttdocomo. There is a 3g one that costs ~¥800 (14 days of usage) and you pick it up at the Lawson convenience store just out side immigration exit doors. All your heavy uploading/social media updates can be done with the. Free Wi-Fi at your Airbnb.
    (2) to get between Tokyo and Narita airport use the narita access bus. It is bus stop #2 @ terminal 3 (literally 150 meters from the front door). ¥1000 to get to get to Tokyo station. Takes 40 minutes in good traffic.
About 1.5 hours in bad. The cheapest train is ¥1380 and takes 90 minutes with several changes. The cheapest direct train costs ~¥2800 and takes 25minutes. You don't need to book the bus. Just pay the driver directly. Buses leave every 20 minutes. From Tokyo station it is bus stop 7 at the Yaesu south exit bus terminal- literally 30 meters from the McDonald's .

    • Thanks. Any more tips for new travellers? Did you stay in Tokyo for the full trip or did you go to Osaka etc?

      • +10

arrived in Narita, bus to Tokyo station, subway to akihabara (3 stops) then I travelled by night bus to Kyoto, 3 days there, then limited express train to osaka (24 minutes/540 yen). 4 days in Osaka (including USJ via this deal, then overnight bus to Tokyo for 4 days.

over night buses booked via this deal.

the site www.kkday.com has some good deals for Japan - e.g. the USJ deal was unbelievably good. watch out for those - they are occassionally posted on ozbargain.

I lived there for 4 years, and this was my third trip back. the best thing to do is read the previous posts regarding Japan travells and gather idea.

my other tip is to not be so caught up in having a very set schedule. obviously accomodation and any bus/train for intercity travel. but don't stress that you have to go to this area, see that temple, must go to that shopping area. certainly , see some of them but also do your own thing.

the enjoyment I derive from travelling in Japan is walking around with out any real set goal and stumbling upon stuff. there is something to see everywhere. Japan is unique. whether it be the individuality through tiny detail of houses, to some interesting cafe, the rundown temple in some back street, watching the small tofu shop making tofu at 5am.

  • How long is the stopover between Syd and GC?

  • +4

We booked these flights last year for 2 weeks from Brisbane, with one 20kg check in luggage and flew in May this year.

Worked out to be about $430 per person with a stop over in Cairns.

It was a pain to actually get out at the Domestic airport in Cairns and queue up for the international check in and the food at the Cairns international terminal was an other rip off.

The trip was awesome, and we definitely would want to go back, but rather direct with Qantas for a bit more. No layover, inflight entertainment and checked luggage included.

    • +1

Had the same exp at the airport last year
The flight crews are not nice 。。
Sorry but we will not take jetstar anymore

    • my trip last week was originally due to stop in cairns and then continue to GC. so happy they changed it to direct.

      • +1

You got lucky tbh! we landed back in Cairns at 5am and the flight to Brisbane was at 9am, and even though the counter was open, they wouldnt let us checkin. they have a few seats outsite and everyone was sitting on the floor until they finally decided to check in at 6.30am!

Would have cost me an other $200 more in total to fly with qantas

    • Glad to see my decision to fly from GC got validated. Price from GC is cheaper too.

    • +3

I flew Brisbane to Tokyo with Qantas 2 years ago. Watched 4 movies and had 6 kirin beers served by flight attendant. And economy cabin was only 1/3 full. I'd go Qantas again for convenience, especially if you consider the in-flight entertainment, meals, check-in luggage.

    As usual Perth misses out.

    • +10

Perth gets every other cheap deal to Asia so no sympathy from me

  • +1

Did this last year and would do it every single damn year if time allowed. Such an amazing country

    • Did it this year! Was so amazing I can't get over it.

  • Any other deal hopes for school holidays Or should I pull the trigger now for one of these dates?

    • same boat, need direct flight during school holidays please 😊

    • Pull the trigger now for this price I reckon. School holidays are unlikely to go on sale.

  • +9

    :'(
I paid more to fly return to Melbourne from Canberra. I could have gone to Japan instead

  • +3

join the 30 million visitors to japan each year.
If seeing chinese tourists pushing luggage is not your thing, plan to go to places other than the major cities and check out some countryside areas. it pays to research a lot of local delicacies and seasonal foods.
If youre going to Osaka, i recommend checking out Gero Onsen or head down to Wakayama.
If youre going to Narita, check out ibaraki, or go 'glamping' in nagano, and hike up through the mountains in spring.
probably the best thing to buy in japan is ingredients and snacks. lots of flavours that arent so easy to come by back in australia. And daiso

    • good thing is its not chinese new year or golden week atleast

      • +1

doesnt matter. 50% of the tourists coming to Japan are Chinese. Its great for the economy, but its overwhelming for the Japanese. They flock to the shopping capitals. Book your accommodation early.

  • Any deal like this flying from Japan to Australia?

    • +1

im not signed up to the jetstar japan newsletter, but often i:ll check the jetstar japan website when these AU sales come up. I fly home for about 6万円 return, same routes

  • Is this the last chance for a cheap return flight to Japan around May next year?

    • Just checked my crystal ball…nope.
But serously, japan is heavily pushing for tourism which is why we always get sales, so there's a good chance more will come around.

  • +1

Booked return for 2 to Tokyo for $404 each flying out Sydney Saturday morning. Decided to spend the extra $41 than flying out Sunday morning.

Wooooo!!! Thanks OP and everyone. We had to wait for this one but got there in the end.

  • i must be missing something pretty obvious, but i can't find any $0 flights returning from Osaka to SYD

    • You're just too late

    • Me too, only on selected dates is free

    • it seems sold out for Osaka. buy tokyo and then catch train, that is what I plan to do

      • Adds another $200 AUD per person… I can wait for the next sale

  • +1

Thanks OP. Hopefully see some of you there.

  • Hello,

What is the best way to avoid the CC fees?

Preferably paying with a credit card to include free travel insurance, if possible.

    Thanks

    • Poli. You can really just Google "Jetstar fee" and it tells you how much each costs.

      • never use bank account ditect debit for flight tickets as you will miss out the travel insurance

        • Will still cost you $8.50 extra per person per flight and your statement assumes everyone has a credit card offering free insurance.

          • @watwatwat: cost me $10 credit card fee (total)
amex fee for 2 adult and one child Sydney - Tokyo

    • +1

0.98% Amex is worth it for travel insurance and points

      • Thanks.

Amex 0.98% fee sounds better than $8.50 per segment.

  • Bought Gold Coast - Tokyo Narita departure 23rd May returning 2nd Jun 2019
Return for free, luggage 15kg pp departure & 30kg pp returning, with Jetstar Club membership. comes out at $385 pp

    • Did you already have Jetstar club? I thought about getting it had it awhile ago wasn't worth it never got anything exclusive anyway or a heads up for sales

      • +1

I got it last November when I booked my previous japan trip(4 people). the discount on the tickets paid for jetstar club and more. plus reduce luggage cost .

      • Yes, the club membership is a must as it offered discount for national flights so saved me more than $49 the cost during the year. For this Japan return it saved around $90 pp for flight and luggage. - I bought two tickets so around $180 even my friend is does not have a membership. So one member can get all passenger discount if purchasing tickets together. Another good thing is $30 voucher for a auto renewing membership the next year. This was sent to me, not sure if everyone will receive that but always ask them for one.

  • +1

    Family holiday for 2019 sorted!

  • +2

Interesting. Looks like barely any return flights for $0 left for sydney<>tokyo.

    • Yeah i couldnt find a single one….

  • +1

Keep getting errors trying afterpay :(

    • I had the same last night,

  • +3

Can anyone find a free return flight? I am unable to find any.

    • I found one, had one seat left and I got to the payment section after creating an account, choosing seats etc and then to an error page after entering payment details.

I was looking GC -> Nirita it looks like they’re all gone :-(

  • is it all sold out? can't find any $0 return fares

  • +1

    GOOOOOONE

  • Im not one to be sure enough to plan so far ahead. Not sure where I will be, or what I will be doing, so far ahead.
Can anyone please suggest best place/site for last minute deals ?
Also, with last minute, or maybe the next week, will similar prices to this post be had ? Or do we usually need to book wayyy ahead, to get great prices on international fares.
Sorry for the noobish comment, I only just got my passport last month. Am super keen to use it ASAP though, but as an avid bargain hunter, it must be a good deal :)

  • Looks like Sydney flights are sold out, and from the other posts like most are sold out. Does anyone have any information about what the fare volumes were? The system to find when free flights are seems needlessly convoluted and the front page is still heavily advertising the fares despite being sold out.

Is it too much to ask for a company giving a win-win? They are driving fares in a non-peak period but still want to make it difficult.

  • Thanks everyone for playing! I’ve taken Sydney off the list now. Seems there’s still plenty of $0 return flights to Adelaide available…

    • You can take Brisbane off the list as well, there is no free return seats for the promotion period.

      • Thanks - done ✔️

        • Melbourne to osaka/Tokyo is gone too. I went through every return date I could during the travel period for a single flyer - nothing.

  • As a bit of a travel noob (never really traveled ) whats the best way to go about it?

Do you literally just say I wanna go to "XYZ" - go there, then wing it? Or would you have a more planned approach ?

I felt like if I just went somewhere with no plan I would just bum around and not really utilize my time wisely - so I guess my question is, what is the best way to plan a efficient holiday?

Do you book tours? Do contiki tours ? (Those tours seem pretty pricey from a quick google…and this is ozB!)

  • +1

Everyone, these are now back, I just grabbed 2 from the GC to Narita with Jetstar Club, 15kg there, 25kg back and 2 sets of the standard seats. $738. The membership discounts paid for itself and saved me another $35. Super excited for my second trip to this amazing country!.

    • Any dates?

      • I've booked mine from the 26th of April till the 17th of May. Saw a few around dates around that for $0 return.

        • Thanks. Weird that your flight over is actually outside the offer dates

          • @kulprit: Yeah i thought that too. The return is inside the offer date, but the flight out wasn't. I just went off the prices. It was $299 a person out and $0 back. There was heaps of $299 flights from the 23rd of April onwards till about the 1st week of May.

          • @kulprit: 20th of May is still available as a $0 return.

Edit: From the Gold Coast to Narita.

  • +6

Sydney-Tokyo $0 return flights are available again.

    • Right now, 619 other people are looking at this flight.

      Sydney might be gone again…

  • Boo, too late for Melbourne.

  • Could only find a few flight return for $0 to ADL and that was right at the start the period ( 17th , 19th and 20th May so you cant even spend a week there )

    • 17th 19th 20th May also not $0 anymore

  • Brisbane Osaka just checked still have $0 left for returning 22, 24, 26 May.

    • Couldn't see anymore $0 for Gold Coast Osaka

  • +1

10K clicks. I’m calling this deal OzBargained.
Thanks again for playing - look out for orange t-shirts!

    • +1

muncan, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

  • make sure you go to takayama

  • Got my flight back cancelled and I elected to move it to the next day, otherwise it would add on 1.5 hours and have a >5 hour layover in Cairns.

I think it is pretty shite how they can delay up to 3 hours and not give you any compensation. Can't even give free seat selection or $5 voucher is lame.

    • I haven’t accepted my 5.5 hour return flight change yet, tempted to do the same as you. Thanks for playing the Jetstar games with me!
Edit: oh wait you’re in Japan now? I’m sorry. Would this be a job for 28 degrees delay pass?

      • No, I'm not there now. Flight in May. Actually worked out fine for me as I can just fly a day later without any interruption but I'm just making a general point that it is crap they give you $0 compensation. Even free seat selection (which costs them nothing to provide) would have been better than nothing.

        • Oh. My return flight from Carins in May changed from 1.5 hour layover to 6.5 hours. I’m tempted to get a voucher refund, but that’ll be the second time I’ve cancelled this trip! (first cancel was Typhoon Jebi at checkin).
