Officeworks - Energizer 'Energi To Go' Mobile Chargers $2.80 ($2.11 on Receipt)

670

Noticed in my local Prahran OW that the Energizer mobile chargers were showing a ticket price of $2.80. After purchase, the receipt showed up as $2.11. They confirmed on the system that it was the correct price, so it should be country wide.

They only had 2 models available, one that supported mini-usb and Motorola plugs, and the other supported SE and LG plugs.

These units contain 2 x energizer lithium batteries which cost ~$10 for a 4 pack, so 2 batteries for $2 PLUS a free portable charger is a pretty good deal.

I cant find any direct link via the OW website.

Those batteries would cost more than 2.80 good find.

  • nice first post

  • Yep good one, thanks TZK!

  • out of interest, anyone know if these types of things have either a usb or apple iphone connection? good idea for extra power if you need it on long trips.

I emailed Energizer support about it, their reply was no. There was no indication that they would develop a plug for them either.

Id say that due to the charge circuits on iPhones being very finicky and specific, they wouldn't work even if you made up your own plug.

I tried the mini-usb plug on a non-phone device (e-cig) and the LED's flashed, so i guess its supplying charge. Will be testing more tonight.

      • apple get royalty on every plug sold. I heard its $1 for every thing that has a 30 pin connector

        • +6

i bet all those cheap ones from china dont pay that (if such a royalty exists)

        • -2

I have a source who says it's $2 per PIN, per article sold.

    • Incorrect info here!

Apple don't get a royalty - what a silly comment!

iPhones etc need a small voltage on the DATA pins of the USB socket so the phone knows what current to draw from the charger. Without the voltages, there is no charging. One set of voltages makes the phone draw 500mA, and a different set of voltages makes the phone pull 1000mA.

You can google and find out the resister values to make a voltage divider and make it work… but you need to match the supplied voltages to your power supply source's capabilities. For a device like this, it might only output 500mA since it would need to do a voltage step up (2x1.5V to 5V)?

      • Seeing as I'm getting negs on my reply I have to take you to task on your erroneous post.

First up, what's your source on Apple NOT charging licensing on pin usage? Do a quick Google search and you'll see that Apple make a LOT of money licensing the use of ALL 30 pins on their proprietary Dock Connector. It's a part of their business model.

Here's some more info on Apple’s MFi licensing program…

      • yes that's the reason. the iPhone 2G and 3G can still charge on generic chargers though. you could always buy an iPhone charging adapter — Boxwave sell them for $10 ex shipping (~$4). i got one and it works perfectly.

  • Awesome deal. +1

  • Pretty sweet - Think I can handle even having to pay the extra 69 cents if need be.

    • hopefully the op will post a receipt ;)

In the spirit of OzB, here's your guarantee to save the 69 cents.

looks like you almost outdid broden in buying out the store's supplies :P

  • i got this 4 weeks ago officeworks at ryde. dont even have a use for it, batts wil come in handy though.

  • I reckon I'll probably throw out the portable charger as I have a solar powered charger for everything. But the batteries will come in handy in my camera.

    • Same here. I use a solar charger. My camera has a rechargable battery though so I don't really use batteries much anymore.

Artarmon NSW has the Blackberry and Nokia tips. 1 of each left.

  • just got the last piece on the shelves (OW Parramatta). was marked as 5 bucks, but knew they were going to register as 2.11 (thx to OP)

the batteries inside are worth more than the device itself. too bad my piece was vandalised, 3 out of the 4 connectors were missing. would be nice if there was a micro usb one.

question: is there a way to convert this to a female usb port? Then any phone can be plugged in…

I also bought another charging device (a "wireless" uniden charger pad from OW for 12 bucks) remember it has similar ends… hopefully they match, then I can charge my android!

ps.: The unidens are still available @ 12$ at OW Parramatta

You could quite easy cut a female USB plug and wire it to a 2.5mm male jack. A male-female USB cable is 99cent on fleabay.

      • That's what she said!

I see what you did there….

  • Nice deal. Too bad no Apple tips or female USB. :(

    • -1

yeah too bad there are no females with usb ports there!
      oh wait…..

  • wow nice find OP

Sorry to break it to you, but your comment is junk.

    • +5

      Batteries are NOT junk.
On a really old 4mp digital camera, a pair of AA batteries would last it 10~15 minutes.
On lithium batteries, it would last 2 hours of continuous use, for close to $1 each, these are an absolute bargain, close to the $1 ones you can get off ebay.

      • -6

you do realise these are on special for a reason right? they ARE junk and are probably already past their date. i used 4 of them from these packs on an old 5mp camera and they lasted maybe 2mins before it would just shut-down automatically. nothing personal but unless you have used these then please don't comment on these batteries.

  • It would be extraordinary if premium-brand batteries like these are just junk. Perhaps the OP or another recent purchaser could confirm the expiry dates? I have often used batteries long after the expiry date. I recently tossed my final pair of Damon brand AA batteries bought at Lidl (a European chain similar to ALDI) in about 1998, and they still weren't leaking.

  • Am I the only one who's noticed that the picture says $2.81 and not $2.80 o_O?

  • Anyone know if these are any good for a Samsung Galaxy S plug?

    • nope, microUSB pin not available

  • +2

In the packs I got on Saturday 5th of March all had expiry date of 2022.

Couldn't find any at Brisbane CBD or Windsor stores
