Can you please change your online status setting.

Every time I check to see if you're online, it says:

    Tightarse Last Seen Disabled.

I keep worrying about you thinking you've hurt your arse.

    Love,

    Scab

Good price, too bad Futu doesn't have them in the m.2 type.

    • does it make a difference as a boot drive M.2 or not?

      • +2

If it's m.2 sata like this one then the only difference is the form factor, NVMe ones (like the wd black) are faster, but also more expensive.

      • The Windows boot performance difference/improvement on m.2/NVMe is minimal (because boot up is heavy random read - thus the sequential read boost has little use during boot up). m.2's main advantage is large video or project files.

It depends on your usage pattern and often depends on your second fastest storage as well. If you cannot pump data fast enough to m.2, then you are not going to really take advantage of it.

For example, for gaming, NVMe SSDs are often a waste. BX200 is well known to be one of the slowest SSD, NVMe SSDs aren't blowing BX200 away in game loading.

        http://www.legitreviews.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/game-…

Don't get too excited with benchmark figures (since they either use pre-cache data to test or simply write data from RAM to m.2 SSD).

        • +4

Forget any speed differences for me the real advantage of using m.2 over SATA is 2 less cables in your case.

This is particularly handy if your building a small form factor PC.

          • @RagingAb3: Excellent point. I am looking at upgrading my PC in the next 3=6 months and only looked at the performance difference between SATA & M.2. I hate cable clutter, so I will make it a priority to ensure that my next mobo has two M.2 slots and not just one.

            • @[Deactivated]: You can get PCI-E cards that take up to 4 M.2 drives so if you want to avoid cable clutter that's certainly an option

Is it worth the extra $22 to get the Samsung 860 EVO?

    • Yep

    • +5

$18.50 more at msy ebay store delivered with P5OFF

      https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Samsung-860-EVO-MZ-76E500BW-500G…

      Better choice ssd imo

    • 119 at msy for 860 evo

      • Plus delivery, or 118.50 delivered on msy ebay store..

        • That’s pick up price if u want it ASAP. Your eBay deal is better if u can wait or can’t get to a store

    • +3

      Yes and here is why

      http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/WD-Blue-500GB-vs-Samsun…

roughly 20% faster in most workloads and iirc higher endurance rating aka it can withstand more read and writes before it runs out of (darn I forgot the name something something) read/write cycles.

TL;DR if the Samsung 860 EVO is less than 10% more dearer it is worth it in my eyes but I would just get it because there is more likely chance of problems with it to be fixed because higher market share (only get the western digital if you feeling gambly and ballsy and want more of a "challenge") but both are really great

      • +2

Thanks for the advice. Although in this case the 860 EVO is closer to 20% dearer…
I think the reliability wins it for the Samsung. The extra $18.50 for piece of mind is money well spent.

        • +2

Amen.. Nothing beats peace of mind and reliability. Samsung is pretty much number one in this department.

  • Remind me again: Blue is better than green yes?

    • +3

      Yeah

    • +3

For day to day use, it's simple to remember:

      Blue > Red > Green

Same order as our political parties.

Edit: Just in case people don't get the above and decide to act smart by correcting me, red is definitely not better than green for day to day pc use :)

      • +2

Same order as our political parties.

Haha thanks I'll remember that :P

You mention how red is definitely not better than green for day to day PC use but have ranked red above green?

        • Cos Labour >> Greens

        • +8

I had to for the sake of the joke because there is no way in hell I'm rating the greens over labor hence I added the edit at the bottom:p
And as Rachith123 said, Labor > Greens

Edit: salty labor and greens voters come at me haha

          • +1

@[Deactivated]: Haha at the moment everyone's doing such a crap job I don't even know who to vote for!

Thing is they just vote in themselves anyway..

I have a feeling this will go down real well

          • @[Deactivated]: Yeah you have just effectively confused everyone with your comments congrats.. are you sure you are not a insert confusing political party supporter?

      • +2

Don't worry. If you are a Liberal supporter, we know you need to twist the facts to support your position. :)

        • +3

It's a joke, not an election loss, don't take it too hard. We don't need imports to boost our vote count :)

          • @[Deactivated]: Wait. Shouldn't the libs have been responsible for importing blues over the last 5 years. If they've been importing reds or greens over that time that's their own fault…

      • +6

Greens have too many logic errors unlike the SSD's

        • -1

Are you seriously trying to make a point about politics using a concept as foreign to it as logic?

In which case, I am duty bound to point out that out of 20 odd SSDs I own/have owned, 2 have exhibited logic errors (causing catastrophic failure) during service.

          That's 10%.

The Greens are yet to be put into service, but given the number of errors made by the blue and reds, statistically speaking they wouldn't have to do too well to beat the others. The propensity of all the others (ok so perhaps not SSDs), to cause catastrophic failure is just too high- but then again, that's the fault of the voters, right? Nor perhaps the political elite, vested interests, industry groups, corporations, lobbyists, paper bag-men, power hungry mongrels, spookz, organised criminals, nation states, etc.

The flood gates are opening. I love how tech prices drop so fast now. And that's where ozbargain is a lifesaver. Saved literally hundreds of dollars in the last six months alone. What a wonderful community we have here.

    • +10

Not yet, RAM prices are still too expensive.

      • +1

I long for the day when RAM is affordable again.

        • That will be a most glorious day.. for some others as I just went DDR3 and got mine relatively cheap

    • -1

Wait until prices drop further, you're going to say you lost a lot in buying them then

  • Using 2 green WD as an upgrade for old laptop & basic pc. Great recommendation if anyone is thinking about it and wondering.

I don't need it & wondering if I should get this size.

  • Just bought a Crucial 250mb a couple of hours ago.
    https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Crucial-MX500-Series-250GB-2-5-S…

If you want a Sata M.2 I would say better to get the 2.5 inch form factor with a Sata cable. This is for cooling reasons.
Drives of any type always last longer sitting in front of a fan.
If you have a hot graphics card remember the M.2 is sitting right under it, so in some conditions will run hotter than 2.5

  • +1

Drives of any type always last longer sitting in front of a fan.

The Backblaze data releases showed a slight increase in reliability for hotter drives.

  • fair enough but keep in mind heat speed throttling and the invention of m.2 heatsinks fir a reason.

    https://uk.hardware.info/reviews/7772/3/m2-heatsinks-review-…

    • These are much, much larger and thicker than M.2 drives so the casing acts as a heatsink. The heat issues are also mainly with NVMe SSD’s which run a lot faster.

      • Yes, the 2.5 case acts as a heat spreader so if you have the space and you are buying sata not pci nice to have it away from the graphics card and mb. Also it's usually a few dollars cheaper like this deal.

  • Might as well just wait for 1TB to reach $100.

    • +2

Post back in 2022 when this is a reality

      • +2

My bet is on June 2021.

        • That is a pretty good guess actually.. I have not looked at any charts or graphs lately but my bet is also around June 2021 or late 2021.

          • @AlienC: Maybe earlier if QLC floods the market.

      • +1

        Actually it happened in 2020…

    • I would say wait for another year but before 2020, 1TB SSD for $100 will become a reality. People need these to upgrade their old laptops and desktops so this creates incentives for more manufacturers to mass produce them. Just like the micro SD card.

  • How about an epic laptop deal?

  • Any deal for external SSD?

  • Thanks TightArse. Very happy with the price.

  • Really needs bigger drives for today games.

I have to backup restore steam games from HDD even already have 2 x 500GB SSD

    • I got a 6TB HDD for my Steam games in one of the recent eBay sales. Definitely recommend it.

      • +1

In order to increase the performance of the game I always put the playing games on SSD.

  • +1

Anyone have recommendations for the best software to clone my old laptop HDD to my new ssd?

    • +1

I use this AOMEI BACKUPPER The standard version is free to download. Works well for me.
