Update 15/11:

Comment Link

Hey guys,

Just confirming that the meetup is on! The details are:
Saturday 17/11/2018, 12:30pm @ Commercial Hotel (2 Hassall St, Parramatta)
It will most likely be in the Beer Garden (ground floor). For the food, what are your thoughts on getting some Pizzas and finger foods to go around?

Also I've changed the poll option to RSVPs now, so please ensure that you've RSVP'd if you're coming (deadline is 6pm Friday). I've also PMed all current voters to let them know that it's on.

Once again, a huge thanks to Scotty for making the event possible, and today I've received from him around 15 Ozbargain T-Shirts in a variety of sizes, so they will be likely be given away on a first come first serve basis. Be quick before they get ozbargain'd

Anyways looking forward to seeing you all there!

Update 16/11:

We got some co-Sponsors for the event and a Prize Draw going! A huge thanks to the co-sponsors who are giving away freebies and contributing to the Prize Draw:

Prize Draw:

  • AMD RX 570 (From JW Computers)
  • Netgear Orbi AC2200 (From Wireless1)
  • 2 x Huawei Sport Bluetooth Headphones (From Mobileciti)

If you wish to be a co-sponsor, please PM me with what are you going to offer.

Hey guys,

Last year's Ozbargain 11th Bday Western Sydney Meetup was a huge success. When I saw Scotty's 2018 Ozbargain Bday Party post, I knew we had to do it again this year, and make it even bigger.

Looking for:

  • expressions of interest
  • suggestions on date and time
  • suggestions on location and venue
  • suggestions on activites and games

Lets make it happen, looking forward to meeting many of my fellow Ozbargainers there.

If any merchants are interested in sponsoring this event, please send me a private message :)

And maybe this time I can show up.

Thanks for the information, have updated OP

      • +1

        Clear is multiple persons?

        • +1

They determined on the livestream that I was infact a woman coming to meet lyl.

      • +1

Hopefully there is enough food to go around this time :) From what I saw during the livestream there was 🍕 to go around but it came out pretty slowly and when it did everyone jumped on it to grab a slice.

        • What food would guarantee your attendance scrimshaw?

        • +1

Rule #1 for an OzBargain meetup, always have enough pizza on hand. I recall the 1st Melbourne meetup I put the pizza boxes down to get plates and by the time I got back, the pizza was gone. :)

Last years, we ordered 40 pizzas and then a bunch of dim sims. That was probably slightly more than enough.

        • We'll definitely make sure that there's enough food, certainly made PJs work last year.

        • +1

everyone jumped on it to grab a slice

          The Ozbargain way.

          • +1

            @ChillBro:

            The Ozbargain way

Grabbing as many slices as possible and listing them on Gumtree; or "I don't know what this is but I grabbed two lol smh" then stuffing them in their pocket.

Anywhere close to a train line would be good, and in the evening so everyone has time to get there.

As for games we should have OzBargain meme trivia, eneloop poker, and shopping bag weightlifting, with prizes provided by as many sponsors as possible.

I will start exercising my alcohol tolerance now so that I don't get so drunk this time.

    • Parramatta was a very convenient location last year and I think somewhere around there would be ideal for those travelling by train. OzBargain meme trivia is a great idea, lets get some games going. Currently contacting the sponsors of last year, if anyone would like to sponsor this event, please hit me up with a private message :)

      • Commercial will be a good option. near to the station with good space for large group

    • What is it rains?

  • +1

If its close to the train station, i would be very tempted to go :)

  • +1

Depending on date/time may be able to make it. Weekends suit me best because I am often stuck back late at work.

  • @lyl — are MobileCiti, Wireless1 & others helping out & sponsoring some prizes again this year?

    • Hey Scotty, they've been contacted, hopefully can make it happen again

  • +1

I enjoyed last years one - and depending on when this year's one is happening will try to come, actually use the Gimbal I won at work (who would've thought…) thanks Skycomp!

  • No stairs please if at all possible. I have to bring my mother with me if I am to attend. Last year she managed with difficulty but this year she can no longer climb up and down stairs.

    • +2

      Hi Alvian,
Great meeting you and your mum last year. Thank you the suggestion, will try to get an location which is easily accessible this year.

  • +1

i agree with @lyl Parra is good location.

  • +1

Parra is nice, western sydney but not too far from city and such.

  • So when's the parra thing happening? Any chicks or is it gonna be a sausage fest only lol

  • Have we got a date/day locked in yet?

    • Hey unistudent1, not yet, do you have any suggestions on the date/time/venue? Currently also in contact with potential sponsors

      • +1

I personally prefer weekend lunch time.

Parra seems reasonable location - only consideration would be parking (easily mitigated)

Venue imo depends on sponsors but if we have free reign, an AYCE place would work well (e.g. Rio Churrasco Parra (used to be $20 per head off Groupon a few months ago).

        Cheers

How bout find a park and we do a bbq. I'll bring the hummus dip.

Great event last year, good to see it happening again.

You'll probably see a greater turnout if the event was on a weekday again. Not only will it not clash with other people's plans but psychology tells us that if someone was 50/50 on coming to an event, they're more likely to continue to go to something if they're already out (I.e. Leaving from work). My vote would be

Last year's venue was fantastic. The outdoor setting was perfect space for people not to be confined to a particular area and it didn't feel overcrowded despite the amount of peoplle. From memory it was also undercover so if it rained that wouldn't be a problem.

My vote would be a Friday at PJs.

If I can make it I'll most likely stream it again so putting my channel whenever the post would be made would be appreciated.

    Last year's video:

    https://youtube.com/watch?v=2ywwgTtuvIA

    • Yo did you make it this year..watching last years stream I am tempted to come to one of these now.

  • +2

All I remember was pizza disappearing before it hit the table.

Based on the turnout last year, the location, time, day of week seemed to suit many people. The event ended up quite busy too.

Good work last year btw lyl.

  • +1

    Great! Keen to join.

Preference would be any Weekend lunch / evening
One more add to venue options - Just opposite to Parramatta Station - Commercial Hotel

  • Any update on the Western Sydney meetup?

    • Hi scotty, please see update below. Thanks

  • +1

    Hey guys,

Thanks for all your suggestions and feedback. Really sorry I haven't been terribly actively, uni exams RIP. I like Mast's suggestion of Commercial Hotel, what are your thoughts? I reckon it'll be a great place close to Parra station, with will be plenty of space for us to chill. It seems many are in favour of a weekend lunch but still some prefer weekday nights, a poll is up on potential dates and times (awaiting moderator), can you please vote on the date/time combinations you prefer? Cheers :)

  • Could I suggest the TollGate Hotel in North Parra -
Food is good, plenty of parking, bus stop out the front (have to cross Windsor Road to go back to Parra though)

Owned by Thomas Hotels - same as the Commercial, but a good deal cheaper.

    • +2

Looks super inconvenient for those who will be catching the train.

  • OK with venue close to Parramatta Stn, prefer Sunday lunch, or dinner.

  • How do I RSVP? I am really keen to come for this event!

  • Hey guys,

From the poll, seems like a large majority prefer the Saturday 16/11 lunch option. Commercial Hotel is a good option close to the station, so I think we should try to plan for the meetup to be held:
    Saturday 16/11/2018, 12:30pm @ Commercial Hotel, Parramatta

I have requested for poll for you to confirm your tentative availability for the proposed venue & time, to get an idea of the numbers. A new RSVP poll will be created and a PM will be sent too all those who are tentatively in for the RSVP once the booking is confirmed. Lets get it rolling :)

    • +1

      November 16 is a Friday?

      • +1

Thanks, sorry I beaned it, the correct date should be:
        Saturday 17/11/2018, 12:30pm @ Commercial Hotel, Parramatta
        Post and poll updated

    • When is the deadline for RSVP? Unfortunately this Saturday is no good for me. However if this Saturday 17 November at Commercial Hotel is confirmed,

      1. I will include in the newsletter tomorrow advertising all the Sydney meetups.

      2. Since I won't be there to pay for the event, I'll need someone to take charge of the payment. That means,

        • Pay out of pocket first (hopefully with a reward credit card)
        • Keep the receipt
        • I'll reimburse the amount afterwards

      Maybe lyl or someone else?

      • +1

Unfortunate to hear that you are unable to come. I've contacted the hotel already and made a tentative reservation, the booking will be confirmed once we have the numbers. Can you please include it in the newsletter, and set the deadline for RSVPs be at 16/11 18:00? I can take charge of the payment. Thank you :)

        • No problem.

  • OK with Friday lunch, but not Saturday lunch due to work.

    • For the food, I think we should get some Pizzas and finger foods to go around. Thoughts?

They have a $17 lunch deal with a choice of 8 mains and a drink. That might be more economical but it's only for Monday to Thursday. However, you could call and ask if they can offer that to us for the event booking.

Otherwise, pizzas are the most practical option to share. For finger foods, Buffalo Wings, Salt & Pepper Squid and Barramundi Goujons would be good for some protein, pizza is very high in carbs already.

      • +1

Hey Scrooge, thanks for your suggestions, I've already submitted an preorder of mainly pizzas and finger foods for easy sharing.

  • +1

I am in, I live near by

    • Nice, can you hit the "Yes, I am attending" option in the poll under the post? Thank you

    • I live near by

      Afterparty at yours?

  • Can i bring my partner along lyl?

    • Hi Bonz,
Sorry but the meetup is only for current ozbargainers. Your partner can still feel free to come, but they have the purchase their own food/drinks.

  • Fair enough

  • Did I just miss the deadline :(

    • +1

Hi Emphasise, Just added you to the RSVP list, you'll be the last RSVP. Getting the event finalised now :)

  • Hey guys,

Thanks for all your RSVPs, RSVP'ing is closed now. Looking forward to a great meetup tomorrow. An update is that we also got some co-Sponsors for the event! A huge thanks to them who are giving away freebies and contributing to a Prize Draw (please refer to main post for the details).
Lets meet up in the Beer Garden at Commercial Hotel tomorrow, I'm the guy in an ozbargain tee.

  • +3

Yeah there were quite a few familiar faces, perhaps Ozbargain should have an upgraded 'Not a Bot' badge?

    • +2

Thanks scotty, Wireless1, JW Computers and Mobileciti for sponsoring the event. Thanks lyl for organising. Thanks to everyone who attended for the war stories. And thanks to everyone who didn't attend for increasing the prize draw odds for those of us who did!
