  • Why not G3? Same price. Storage you can always add internal or external, can’t do much about GPU.

I think the OP is not a good shopper.

I didn't bother searching too much but just to give you an idea of what is a good value laptop with GTX 1050 for $1,300: https://www.lmc.com.au/products/Notebooks_and_Laptops/Asus/5…

This is gen 7 cpu. He’s got 8th gen. Not a bad deal it’s just that I would go with G3. But I guess op is not a gamer.

      • -7

How can't compare just because it's called 8? What's is the difference?
And for the same price I would prefer a GTX 1050 being the laptop for gaming or not I don't care.
Also I could search more just I don't need to buy it.

        • battery life.

    I had to google what a g3 is…haha

Anyway, i had a look on it but it has i5 instead of i7..i was told that i7 4 cores is what i have to go with as i7 is better than i5.. is it?

Yeah, not a gamer but wouldnt mind to play a quick game once in a while :)

    • Ask at Dell eBay store, this one:

      https://www.m.ebay.com.au/itm/Dell-Inspiron-15-G3-3579-FHD-G…

      Same price.

      PLUSES:
      more powerful CPU
      much better GPU

      MINUSES:
      Less energy efficient CPU
      Half size SSD
      Not narrow edge screen

Basically buy this only if you play games

Much much much better CPU***. The G3 i7 has a 6 core 45watt processor in a better cooled chassis. Its a great CPU. Compared to the Inspiron which has an i7 which is 15watts and four cores. The performance is really night and day.

But, depending what you use this laptop for, it may not matter. If you're using it for browser, office apps and the odd light game (candy crush etc) then the inspiron will see you through the next 3-6 years easily.

I have an xps 13 with 5th gen i7 (5500u) 15watt cpu which I still use at work regularly. For those tasks 3 years on it give me no trouble and just works.

In summary, the G3 is better on all performance dimensions but the screen won't be as nice, battery will suffer a bit, portability is a bit worse. It just depends what you want it for.

Watch/read some reviews of each to get a good sense of what the quirks of each are. Good luck!

        • What are your thoughts on the xiaomi air 13 or 15 with the 8550u processer i5, 256 ssd 8 gig ram and mx 150 graphics card?

Had a Lenovo x13 (or something close, sorry no technical here) for around 5 or so years. Was really good but slow now. Use is general business with some paint.net and other non tech apps.

Looking at portability, weight and affordability- preferably something that is also aesthetic.

The new XPS 13 dells are a little out of my reach. Would have tried a MAC for the first time but I’m a windows user so unsure if the learning curve.

You seem super knowledgeable and I’m truly grateful for any advice. Hoping for something to ride me out like the Lenovo has.

Thoughts are appreciated! Thanks in advance :)

@AskingForAFriend: Not familiar with Xiaomi air (do they exist?) Buy the Xiaomi pro looks like a nice device.

I guess for me it comes down to warranty and support. The Xps 13 had to have the screen assembly replaced when the hinge died (hinge and screen are one piece). Thankfully under warranty but the point is what is the support to get parts when something breaks? I think this is the big benefit of dell and a major concern with anything expensive from Xiaomi in Australia.

Hardware wise the Xiaomi Notebook Pro looks solid, but the lack of available support would be too much of an issue for me.

I think an Inspiron like this one might be a good fit for you based on what you've written. The 7000 series in 13 and 15 inch are pretty nice. Cheers.

@Schmerkin: Thanks so much, I appreciate it!
              Haven’t considered these but I’ll take a look :)

@AskingForAFriend: I recently bought the latest xiaomi air in store in China. Their service is awesome. I got to check the laptop before leaving the store. I found a dead pixel on the spot and they were happy to replace it. In terms of laptop built and spec. It is really good and fast. I have no problem with it. The size and weight is similar to MacBook pro 13" imo. I got it for $4999rmb which is around $1000aud and they gave me the xiaomi wireless mouse as a gift. Comes with Chinese window 10 and office but I might format it to put English in. Will need to buy your own copy of window as theirs one is Chinese only.

            • @SS625: Thanks so much :) I’ve seen reviews and comparisons on YouTube and it looks very similar in size and weight to the MacBook Pro 13. What about the build quality of the case? Is it similar to a MacBook Pro 13? Thanks so much :)

              • +1

@AskingForAFriend: yea the casing is very nice. kinda unibody like the macbook pro, there is a bottom panel which is screw into the side casing.

overall built quality I would say its very close to macbook pros and the screen is also very nice imo.

Don't get fooled by Intel's i7 marketing bull on low specifications laptops because 1) you don't need it; 2) you won't see any real difference; 3) you waste your money to the corporations.
An i5 is more than enough.

    • It's like a G6, like a G6

Its a disgrace having only 8gb ram.
