+1 - love this coffee machine, good price!

    • +4

+1 from me too! Excellent price which means an even faster payback time for those upgrading from a Nespresso machine as we did.

I ran the calcs as part of the purchase justification and purely based on the savings of the Nespresso pods we used versus Bay Beans (a huge saving of around 62c per shot!) and the number of coffees we made per week (approx. 14 shots per week/56 shots per month conservatively) we'd be able to pay the entire $570 machine off easily within 16 months. At the price in this deal it should pay itself off in less than 14.5 months or even faster for those who drink more coffee than we do… plus the added bonus benefits of far less waste and far better tasting coffee & options etc. etc. etc

      • Nespresso capsules costs about 75c per shot. And you saved 62c per shot. That equals to 13c per shot. What beans are you using and how much grams you normally use for a shot?

        • +1

Usually 18g for a double shot. So I can pull roughly 50 shots from a 1KG bag of beans, cost me $35. So 60c/shot a coffee.

        • 1kg had roughly 130 shots of coffee at 7 Grams a shot (Google's numbers). At $20 a kg that's roughly 13 cents a shot.

As a side note I get my coffee from 2 brothers foods for $20 a kg.

That could be how op got their numbers.

          • @teereb: Yeap. I have the same thought as well. But the thing is once the coffee is opened, it starts to degrade and will develop a stale taste after 2 - 3 weeks. To achieve 13 cents a shot, usually we have to purchase in bulk, and go through them quickly.

This is sort of like comparing how much it cost per ml of coke in can vs 2 litre bottle. Yes we get better deal on 2L coke, but coke in can has better consistency over longer period of time.

Yes I do agree Nespresso is way overpriced. But I have to admit I do save a lot of time in the morning though (1 minute nespresso vs at least 5 minutes of grind + froth + cleanup).

        • +1

We only really used the Nespresso Indriya capsules and they were 79c, possibly even 80c a few years ago. Sometimes delivery was extra, other times delivery was free but that all depended on whatever offer was running at the time so the delivery cost added another cent or two to the capsule cost but I'm not including that in this case. We now use Bay Beans at $50 for 2kg including delivery and calculated the 17-18c per-shot cost via a friend who was already using a BES870 with Bay Beans.

We found Bay Beans far better than the Campos beans we tried but put that down to the fact that the Campos beans soured VERY quickly… within only a few days! The Bay Beans taste great and stored really well for many weeks in an airtight container and we got consistent flavour from them over the 2kgs and we're now onto our third 2kg lot and just loving it!

Time-wise, yes… the process takes longer than a Nespresso but definitely not long at all. It was really the waste issue we were mainly annoyed with and the fact that Nestle took far too long to develop/introduce a recycling process/service but the lower per-shot cost and, far nicer flavours and ultimate flexibility & choice are all great bonuses too :) We'll never go back.

          • @SteveAndBelle: What grind and dose setting on your BES870 are you using with Bay Beans?

            • +1

@unbelievable: With Bay Beans I set the grind to 5 and dose on middle setting resulting in a nice big pile in the handle BUT I quickly learnt to only tamper it really lightly otherwise the pressure is too much and you only get a few dribbles during extraction. I tried grinding coarser so I could tamper more but that didn't work. The Campos beans needed to be ground one notch coarser and one notch less for dose and still only a very light tamper. Haven't tried any other beans as we're very happy with the Bay Beans but those subtle settings made all the difference between beans so I'm expecting to need to adjust if we ever went for other beans.

      • how would the coffee from this machine compare (in taste) to that produced by
DeLonghi Dedica Pump Espresso - EC 685W

I know that they are not comparable machines in what they do - just interested to know how different an end product they produce??

        • +2

Pretty sure with a bit of time & effort you could get nearly any machine to create the same tasting coffee as I've found most of the difference comes from everything but the machine itself. The bean brand/type/freshness, the grind fine/coarse setting, the grind quantity and the tamper pressure make the most difference. The extraction itself is a pretty simple & controlled process but of course some machines would make it quicker & easier to perform, clean & maintain compared with others.

One example… it took me about 15 shots worth of experimenting to get some very expensive Campos beans to produce a coffee I enjoyed using the BES870 when I first got it. Once I'd figured out the grind style, grind quantity and tamper pressure I was making consistently good coffees however the Campos beans soured extremely quickly so within a week the flavour was completely different an in fact downright foul. I then tried out some Bay Beans and needed another 10 shots of experimenting to get a result I/we liked as they were completely different to the Campos. I actually found them far more forgiving than the Campos beans and had great results even when I got a bit lazy and slightly altered the grind/quantity/tamper formula each time. Those Campos beans were amazing but wow you really had to get it right each & every time and you had to use the beans within a day or two for optimal taste. The Bay Beans are much less fussy and still taste great even after being stored in an air tight container for a few weeks.

          • +1

@SteveAndBelle: thanks for that - appreciate you taking the time to comment

            • @dr_ rusko: My pleasure. I suppose that's one benefit of Nespresso… if you find a capsule you like then you can just live happily ever after making the exact same coffee each & every time without any fuss. We really enjoyed our 5 years of Nespresso and stuck with Indriya capsules but the extreme cost & crazy waste just became too much of an issue for us over time. I was skeptical about moving to a manual machine at first but I'm so glad we did as it doesn't take long to learn how to make great coffees and the choice is far greater to boot plus the obvious bonus benefits of far lower costs and waste.

        • I can say that the DeLonghi Dedica machine has one of the worst milk frothers I have used. Also mine broke after 9 months of very light use.
Edit: The machine itself, main seal. Not the milk frother.

I have an ozbargain email filter to detect coffee because I want a new coffee machine and I want to see when a deal on one comes up.

I put up with all the random shit that it sends me in the hope of one day that it will catch a good deal on a coffee machine.

It didn't email me about this. >:|

  • Any stores have stock for C&C? None in NSW I can see. Scratch that. Bathurst here I come.

    • +1

      Bathurst here I come.

      See you in 3 hours.

  • +1

fantastic machine, mine has given me years of fantastic service…. only thing my kids havent destroyed

    • +12

      RIP opti's marriage.

  • Argh, I want this, but no C+C stock in Tasmania, and $56 postage?!

    • …nevermind, I can get the stainless steel one instead for only a little bit more, and it's in stock.

      • Same in WA, no C&C but heaps of Silver and $517.

  • I have this and love it. But the timer on the espresso pulling has buggered up and now I have to manually stop it. I've tried to reset it multiple times to no avail. Might go approach a breville customer service soon…

  • Waiting fpr my BES860 to die so I can justify an upgrade :(

  • For someone that knows sweet f all about making coffee, is this an okay machine to start with and operate eg just chuck grinded beans in and press a button or two? At the moment just have a pod machine with inbuilt frother (lattissima touch) but I hate the taste of pod coffee.

I've had one for about 4 years - was a bit of a learning curve up front cause I knew SFA about coffee machines too. It has a built-in coffee grinder and you put whole beans in the hopper - the tricky part is knowing what setting to put the grinder on … too fine and the coffee is bitter - too course and it tastes horribly weak. The secret I found is to waste a few beans try changing the grind until it takes 30 seconds from when you press the button till the coffee stops flowing … if it takes longer then make the grind coarser and vise versa. After about 3 years I had the grind on full fine but was taking about 20 seconds, so I called Breville and asked for what they call a Shim kit - these are small washer shaped disks that go under the grinder conical burr and lift it a little bit. Surprisingly, these were free - great customer service from Breville! After fitting the shim (really easy with included instructions) it could set the grinder about half way and get 30 seconds, so heaps of headroom left. The other thing I do that you won't see written down is I put a plastic take-away container under the group head when grinding to catch the small amount of coffee that will spill when grinding - otherwise it falls onto the tray and makes a real mess. i'll be buying another when this one dies - touch wood at least one coffee every day for 4 years and still going strong. Hope that helps - more can be found on the Coffee Snobs forum https://www.coffeesnobs.com.au/

      • Awesome info, cheers!

  • I have one I got on special at $520 3 years ago, looks like I got a good deal. I'm happy with the machine but wish is had a little more pressure in the steamer. Looking to upgrade just because I want more pressure, considering a Silvia.

  • +2

Bloody good coffee machine, had this for a year now make good coffee. Also hot tip buy Aldi beans they are good!!!

    • They are good for about a week and after 3 weeks it becomes undrinkable. I wish they sold half kilo bags.

  • Also some good deals on Delonghi seconds.
    http://www.delonghi.com/en-au/factory-seconds/seconds-shop/s…

  • Was going to get a fully automatic machine but at this price this one is tempting

    • +1

Dont' do it. Automatic machines are junk. I have an expensive one at work and it's gross.

      • ^ Agreed

  • Can anyone comment on if the grind is adjustable? If I want a coarse grind for a plunger etc?

    • Never mind, apparently fully adjustable

      • It is a stepable grinder, with only about 15 settings. I got it working OK for a plunger, but not coarse enough for Pour-Over.

  • How does the grinder compare to the smaet grinder?

  • How much at Good guys commercial?

  • Can anyone give any thoughts on preference between this or Sunbeam EM7000 ($476 with current sale and 20% off)?

    • There are some useful comments and discussions in the previous deal's comments such as: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/6454293/redir

    • Sunbeam EM7000 is a dual thermoblock model so you can steam and brew at the same time. Not really comparable. This is an AIO solution.

EM7000 + Breville Smart Grinder Pro is a great combo though.

  • +1
  • How long does it usually take to make a cup of coffee with this? Also is it loud? I have a tiny home!

    • No more louder than a professional barista one.

  • Brilliant coffee machine, had mine for just under a year, no issues. Makes very good coffee, just make sure you get some good beans and spend some time dialling in the prior grind and dose for the shot. Good price too!

  • I had a silver one. Wish I had a black one. Performs really well if you get a better grinder.

    • I modified the grinder to allow me to get a finer grind. My shots are perfect now!

  • Niceee, pity I have one already.

  • Great machine!

  • I don't understand coffee.

    • +3

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee

Coffee is a brewed drink prepared from roasted coffee beans, the seeds of berries from certain Coffea species.

      • I should rephrase, I don't understand $5 coffee.

        • Less than 100$ jungle cat poop coffee…

        • Back in my day (12 years ago), a regular size coffee was $2… Geez I feel old…

  • There was one of these machines in a holiday rental that I stayed at recently. I couldn’t get the grinder to go fine enough. It was on the finest setting, still not enough. I would get a stand alone machine paired with the breveille smart grinder pro if I was in the market.
