      Sadist

  • Still wouldn't pay this much for a first gen, especially when it doesn't include 3G..

    $250 is more reasonable..

Only reason i'd get one is for typing notes during classes or reading newspaper. Already got an iphone that does most things..

    • There really isnt much of a difference between 1st and 2nd gen, so if you're looking to save some cash you might be better off getting the older model. And similarly, if you're looking to save cash, the wifi only one is actually perfectly fine if you've got an iphone on the new OS (or jailbroken), as you can just create a wifi hotspot from your pocket and use that.

      • +5

Is that a wifi hotspot in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

You would only get a crappy slow android 2.1 fake iPad clone for $250.

      • By that reasoning, wouldn't that make the ipad a cheap crappy tablet PC clone?

    • +1

I doubt you'd be typing out notes in class while using the iPad, youre more likely to be playing games on it ;)
Like the guy who was playing this Deerhunter game in my biology tute.

Spot on. For $250, I'll buy Ipad just for reading pdf magazine. Above this price point, it is still not worth the price for what it is capable of.

Last time I remember, we managed to get Nook Color with similar capability (smaller screen but same resolution, same quality IPS display) for US$237 delivered to Australia, so $250 should be reasonable price to expect from iPad, otherwise it is still another overpriced device from Apple…

      • and that with android capability!

      • +1

it should be compared to the likes of Samsung's Galaxy Tab or Motorola's Xoom, instead of the Nook (even though it can be hacked into an Android tablet). Manufacturers have found it difficult to challenge Apple with their pricing for the iPad thus far. Other Apple products can be argued to be overpriced, but not the iPad, as their main strategy is to penetrate the market and gain income from the sale of Apps as well.

I have noticed that people who criticize the iPad have not owned one. If there are people here who have owned and iPad and loathed it (or found it to be unworthy of the asking price), do reply. I too started with much scepticism upon its release, but after owning one, there isn't anything out there that's quite like it, especially in terms of usability, rather than raw processing power.

I own one, but I didn't pay for it, I won it via a competition. And I can say I NEVER would have paid that much for one. They are over-rated, I got bored of mine within two weeks. They are a gadget, that's all. i own an ipod touch more, and use it a lot more.
          They are not revolutionary.
They are a big ipod touch/iphone. It's that simple.
I will also add that both my idevices are also jailbroken, so i get complete functionality of them. so I didn't just install a few apps, and get bored.
I tried many apps, and modifications, etc, and it's still boring.
Right now it is only used to stream media from my pc, and for that, I could've gotten something way cheaper than an ipad.
I will add that my entire family share that opinion, it is only used ot stream media. And it's only used when our portable dvd players are being used.

I love how you people think iPads should be priced cheaper than an 8GB iPod touch…

      • who said the ipod touch was cost effective?
from the owner of a paperweight ipod video

        HTC Flyer FTW!

  • didn't know BIG W was in chatty…

    • didnt say it was

JB have been selling them (price matching Big W) since the beginning of March!

      That's right

  • -2

    old news is old

  • That's it cuz

  • Big W and Target have sold out of this version, so its hard to come by at this price, so this is a bargain when apple store still has for 449

    • Agreed - price matching was only available at JB if you could find somewhere else with stock, so for me this is the equivalent of a new bargain as opposed to the Big W one which has basically sold out.

      • Replying to my own post… just called Chatswood and they have sold out. However it still was a bargain at the time… :)

LOL at people saying this device is expensive. It's the most affordable tablet out of the heavy players ie. playbook, galaxy tab 2 etc.

Totally agree with you guys. Since I only use for PDF reading, I will only pay $250 max for an ipad. vice versa, if I use my Merzedes for shopping only, I will think it only worth $10k for a new one. It is the manufacturer's fault to put more feature than I need, not me that cannot afford it. I also accept the fact that I will never get the above products at the price I want.

A side note: If I can convince enough people not to get ipad at $400 or above, maybe Apple will drop their price. So I will say $250 or nothing !! (I can dream, can I?)

    • I dont think it works like that.

If you made $10 million a year, and only used your car for shopping only,
do you see yourself driving a $10k Kia tiny or a $200k Mercedes.

My point is it's not driven purely by need but is driven mostly by perception/affordability.

Ipads are really a waste unless you:
    1. design things
    2. you have a ton of paper to process everyday
    3. you have too much money

Also Ipads are very money hungry due to the amount of download you need to get the apps and you have to pay for the apps, like subscriptions.

So, I am sure most of us would just stick to our trusty PC or Mac. I would recommend to save your money and buy a Mac Pro. Better chance to get decent programs and hacks.

  • Old & not the cheapest price either.
