Kinda outdated, but still good value for that price, will probably make a great present for mum/dad as they probably only use it to watch video and surf the net instead of abusing graphic card on games :D +1

  • +4

Superb value, will do most regular tasks just fine.
I am impressed with this price. Cheap!!

Whats with the Freebie tag though?

    • +1

      sorry, Freebie tag changed.

  • so the standard cpu is the Pentium D and not Core 2 Duo?

ps re freebie, maybe it means free pickup?

    • +2

      intel E3400 for the CPU.

      • thanks for clarifying…

nice base system btw… you might want to pair with a cheap monitor/board mouse for a complete system

  • Noob questions:

How does this compare to the Aldi computer, http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/41478?

Need a new comp for the lady.
The most intensive processes for the computer will be watching 720p videos (on a 19" display), running ITunes, having about 10 or so tabs open on Chrome/Firefox etc, outlook.

EDIT: By 720p, I mean x264/MKV encoded videos playing at 720p resolution.

    • +1

The aldi computer is heaps more powerful, defiantly wouldn't have any issues, but if your not going to do much with it this would suit your needs, (on board should be enough for 720p but you may need to clarify)
the 39 dollar graphics card, will be a little better, find out more info then you can look and see if it will do 1080P which is what we are moving too.

the aldi computer already has an OS as well so take away 127 bux from the total price. (or add 127 to this one)
      much more expensive though…

i'd be more swayed towards this one if money is an issue as needs should be met.

    • +1

EDIT: By 720p, I mean x264/MKV encoded videos playing at 720p resolution.

This system should be able to crunch away those in the CPU - considering the onboard has no video decoding offload support.

I've got a system older than this that has no issues playing 720p h264 , it does however choke on 1080p (any format).

  • in general this pc seems to have half the capacity of the aldi unit, this is dual core cpu aldi is quad core, 2gb ram vs 4gb, 500gb hdd vs 1tb, same 2 year warranty, but once you add win7 it takes the price over the half way mark

re movie playing, this cpu is fine for normal avi/divx and even for most high bitrate mkv and blu ray rips but the onboard graphics is probably not up to it, so you either have to go for a discrete gpu here or get the aldi unit

    • for the people who want to using this PC as a HTPC, we offer a ATI Graphic card with HDMI output for $39. this model is a every day computer. you need compare Aldi PC with intel i3, i5 computer. FYI: http://www.budgetpc.com.au/i3-i5-super-special.html

    • +1

Doubling everything should never include price. The only part that would cost 2x as much, as you listed above, is the RAM. Going to a quad core or a 1TB drive would only be a minor increase in cost.

Realistically, this and the Aldi systems are great bang for the buck. Buy whatever your budget allows is my advice.

Personally though, I'll never buy an Aldi system - I've heard many horror stories re: service and parts. Aldi don't need to make a name for themselves in the PC business, unlike these guys, who are more likely to want to keep you happy. :P

    • Was thinking:

      1TB SATA II - BudgetPC Recommended +$25.00
ATI HD4350 512MB HDMI Video Card - BudgetPC Recommended +$39.00
      4GB DDR3 1333 Memory +$35.00

      $338
No OS needed. Again, this isn't a media pc. Just 1 person using it for day to day things, it addition to watching videos at a desk. Thanks morpheu and wisc for the feedback.

The media PC I have (taken directly off the Whirlpool HTPC specs), which is maybe a couple of years old plays 1080/720 but can be jerky/not smooth, when the scene is moving (e.g. Camera pans across the room). On a 50" TV it's noticeable, probably not on a 19".
EDIT: While I can live with it, the lady can't and if I give her a computer that does that, I will never hear the end of it. ;)

      • Just quickly: in regards to the jerky whilst panning - it may not be an issue with the processor not keeping up, it may just be the refresh rate of the video vs. TV/output. I've had issues with videos playing back @ 50hz, but being output @ 60hz to the TV that caused this to happen.

My HTPC is XBMC so I have the option of telling it to adjust the output to match the video, or vice versa - doing either of which resolves the problem. In XBMC you can also see dropped frames as well, to see if the CPU isn't cutting it.

      • May not even need that much RAM unless you are installing Windows 7, which feeds on it.
        Can always add more later.
Really, for watching 720p videos and browsing this will do the trick, I'd say. I think people are often influenced by the gamers and and think they need the absolute latest in firepower, but a system like this will do fine, given your requirements and the price point.

        • +1

yep - this system should do fine on 720p - Any problems will probably be due to codec/player problems. (VLC is designed for compatibility, not speeed)

Maybe your current system is fine - just need to update the player?

Look up netbook 720p media player.
Its media player classic with add in codec

          • Yep tried Win Vista 32, now running Win 7 64.
          • Played in XBMC, VLC, Win Media, Media player classic, PowerDVD etc, etc. same results.
          • Got the H264 codec, community something or other codec.
          • Updated video card drivers and anything else I could think of. Downgraded drivers.
I did play with the resolution settings in the graphics card so it would output to at different resolutions and not sure if I saw much of difference. The videos I watch are primarily 60Hz (whatever the US one is). I'll give your suggestion a try ryang.

The one issue that I was going to check off is the RAM. I only have 2GB but I wouldn't have thought that would affect playback of a video as according to the tas manager, the RAM doesn't seem to be exhausted.

          Back on-topic,
I'd prob go 4gb ram as we sometimes collect browser tabs (some dating years back!). Also, every Itunes update seems to require more and more resources. So not worth getting the $39 512MB video card? It will only be plugged into a 19" monitor for the rest of it's foreseeable future.

2 quick searches. Similar to the setup I did on my notebook, cant remember exactly cause I did it so long ago.
On the sinlge core notebook it plays fine except that it still has a buffering glitch every 10 mins or so - on your dual core should be fine.

      • +1

E3400 should have no problem playing 1080P —- maybe. My old Athlon x2 5200 + ATI Radeon HD 3200 have no problem playing 1080P Blu-Rays (with PowerDVD), and E3400 seems to be a bit faster.

  • speaking about camera panning, if the movement itself is fluid but the picture is breaking up in a kind of "shutter" effect it's not your pc, it's the camera, some camera's including even high end digital slrs can have this issue, more info here, http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091124183445AA… , although they call it the 'jello' effect!

  • Noob Question:
    Why would you want Windows 7 (x64 bit) on a 2GB DDR3 System? I thought that a 2GB DDR3 system would only be compatible with a (x84)OS.

    • sort of correct… future upgrade in ram i supposed…

you can use less ram on a 64 bit system. but you can only use 3 1/2 on a 32 bit system, its the way it addresses the ram…

      • +2

Win7 x64 does work on 2GB RAM but as said above 4GB probably better.

        • Well my choice for a system like this would still be XP professional but whatever floats personal boat.

          Vista 32? Eeek.

      • @wisc - You can use more than 4GB on a 32 bit system with PAE.

      • +1

The difference isn't that noticeable for everyday use.

    MSY parts price:
    E3400 $55
    Asrock board $48
    2G DDR3 RAM $23
    500G HDD $42
    DVD-RW $27
    Tower Case $45
    Total $240

Well done Budget PC, whole pc with 2 year warranty is even cheaper than buying parts from MSY!!!!

    • power supply, does the 45 dollar tower case come with a powersupply? might need to add another 18 bux for a shaw!

    • good breakdown mate, well done for such a useful post (+ vote to u).

    • Yes but if you were to put it together yourself, you'd get the 3 year warranty from Intel on the CPU, as it would be retail packaged rather than OEM.

      • Uhh… Yeh, one part…. What about motherboard, HDD, PSU?? Each item has different warranty terms and suppliers. It's 100x easier to return an entire system (for an inexperienced user) than it is to diagnose and return 1 part to a different supplier.

  • you forgot the power supply, unless the case comes with it!

    • lol, beat me by 10 seconds! though i did type more :P

  • I believe this is a great value PC for anyone that needs something real cheap and decently fast.
Used the money saved on a CPU Cooler and OC the processor.
Buy an AMD 5670 graphics card and you got a game/work machine.

  • +2

    quality, not quantity wisc!
re shaw, don't say that too loud or else samfisher will come and flame shaw power supplies even more than he did in that aldi thread!
"A shaw PSU is what I put in my toilet each day."<-lol

actually the other two things the aldi has over this is usb3 and wifi, so add those up too

  • is this windows 7, xp pre-installed?

    • Default configuration is no OS installed or supplied I believe.

      • great to see it happening. they've realised everyone just installs win7 ultimate when they get home so no reason to pay the extra for win7 pre-installed

        • Er, if I bought this PC I'd install XP Pro. I use it on my main PC even.

  • +1

cheapest computer money can buy! and can still do anything you could want.. Add a midrange videocard and you have a gaming pc you cant go wrong with this system at all.

  • Nvm.

    • Except that I know what you said due to email sub >:D

      • I added the bluray burner THEN FORGOT!

      • .

  • wow…very cheap computer

  • +4

OK, bought it. Added 4GB RAM and the 1TB HD. Also, got another 2GB of RAM for the HTPC. ;)

Only $7.50 for delivery as well. Pretty good deal.

  • Will the G41 Chipset motherboard (please state the motherboard model) and the CPU you're supplying achieve 1333MHz without an overclock?

At best, won't you only be able to achieve 1066MHz?
If so, what's the point of the 1333MHz RAM?

    Please confirm this for me.

    • +1

Because 1333MHz is more "standard" than 1066, you'll find that more often than not the RAM is also cheaper. Or at least more available. There is no downside to putting faster RAM in if it's the same price, but the slower RAM in a faster board makes no sense.

  • Remember that this is a Celeron. Only 1 MB L2 cache :(

  • for an everyday home pc that'll do most things you chuck at it, this is a good deal. ok it isnt going to run modern games at full settings, but for $239 would you really expect it to? good setup indeed.

    • Yes but the thing is, for $399 you can get a Celeron notebook with OS, display, keyboard, touchpad, speakers, Wi-fi, and webcam. Add all of those things to this desktop and it comes out as being more expensive. As for upgradability, let's face it, this is a throw-away PC - I can't see anyone upgrading this down the line rather than replacing it.

  • Anyone know the model of the mother board used? or how many sata ports it has?.

    • 4 of them

  • +3

Just wanted to say I'm very happy with the PC so far. Put order in on the 24th Thursday paid via bank deposit and ended up receiving it the following Friday. Had to laugh as besides the normal packaging the used 2 new in package notebook sleeves as part of the packaging.

As for the computer, it runs 720p as well as 1080p videos very well. One interesting quirk was that it didn't boot my Win 7 disc although it did my Win XP CD. Bizarre so I put it on a usb drive and all went well. Note, it also doesn't have DVI out which isn't a problem for me but something I wouldn't have thought to check.
